  • Steel drum music is a tradition on the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. "Pan" instruments are made from recycled oil drums. The drums are mad in different keys and usually played in ensemble style. They can play anything from Bach to Metallica. This video was made for the "Recycled: Re-Seen exhibit at the Museum of International Folk Art.

    Thanks Trinidad & Tobago for this wonderful instrument that gave the world it's international sound of the sea.

    Great video! It is important that the Steelpan or 'pan' for short be recognized as the official name of the instrument and NOT steel drum, a term which orginated only in North America, the steel drum being the raw material from which the steelpan is made. It is daunting that this name persists to date when it is found nowhere in Trinidad & Tobago.
    Let us help educate and respect culture bearers by using the correct name.
    Thank you for including the correct terms.

    Very pleased to see a Venezuelan song (Alma LLanera, min 2:24) being used to teach the kids. The influence of steel band music in Venezuela is very notorious during los carnavales.

    There's something inherently happy about steel pan (drums). It just brightens my mood, and sounds soooo good.

    Greetings! I think that for a short documentary, it has been well done with a balanced view. After reading the several comments, I humbly offer that steel drum and steel pan are both acceptable terms . Though not a membranophone, compression of air impacts upon the sound produced in this instrument. The theorectical theses purport that these instruments originated in the Afrivan drum , all of which are nor membraneophones. Thank to Selwyn Meyers of Simeon Road, Petit Valley for his explanations.

    A wonderful movie is coming out on the history of PAN! by French filmmaker Thierry Teston. It goes all the way back to the African Drum being banned by the British and the people finding other ways to express themselves. Google PAN! A Modern Odyssey to watch the trailer. There is also an article on it on Huffington Post. It is powerful and features pan enthusiasts from all over the world who come to Trinidad to compete in Panorama, the biggest, most exciting steel pan competition in the world.

    steel pan or drums don't make any difference. As long as it relates to the same thing....

    • @bakayad3196
      @bakayad3196 6 років тому +4

      It makes a difference to Trinis.. They are not the same thing. "The Steel Drum" is the resource from which *Pans* are made. That's like calling a Violin a tree, because it's made of wood. And as far as musical instrument classification is concerned - A pan is an *idiophone* - A drum is a *membranophone* . . Not the same thing -Peace
