I know you seem to be focusing on Song reviews, but I would love to see you do product reviews (that are honest and NOT sponsored) as well. For example the new PRS SE Silver Sky that everyone 'loves' so far. I think a lot of people would benefit from your guitar knowledge in terms of what gear to buy if you have a lower budget...
Whe you go on tour again. It would be cool to see you do little collaborations with other players, outside of your band, country, rap, indiginous. You could call it 15 minute songs or some such. Might open you up to further work besides Darkness or whatever.
When you say, "I don't listen to the Foo Fighters", I am reminded of Hansel in Zoolander when he says, "Sting would be another person who's a hero. The music he's created over the years, I don't really listen to it, but the fact that he's making it, I respect that."
Man I've been playing guitar for 15years, and I have always been ashamed I didn't know theory. Watching you has made me start learning theory, and OMG it has been eye opening. Wish I would have done it sooner. Oh well, thanks for the content Justin!.
After the day I have just had it’s reassuring to listen to someone competent who knows what he’s talking about. This channel is that dozens of minutes of daily hope.
Really love the way you describe chords, harmonies and music in general… I can really relate to those moments, how they make you feel and how can they be transfered to music… keep up the good work my friend !!!
It's this encyclopaedic musical knowledge and ability to dissect a charting rock behemoth that makes me appreciate Grace's Amazing Machines even more! Kudos to you sir.
Hey Justin, As a fan, I consider you one of the best vocalist, guitarist and frontmen, ever. The music world needed The Darkness. However, this channel is your calling man! Your honest and gentle critique, genuine admiration for others and fantastic demonstration of the songs, is every music fan’s dream. Not to mention the fluent use of words that I find so enjoyable to hear and watch. Thank you!
Great video, as always. If you want to give the Foo Fighters a chance (coming from your musical angle) , listen to their "Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace" Album in the original running order. The precise riffing (as to be found in the darkness) and all the grandiose stadium rock poses of this record will make you love it. Especially "Let It Die" still brings tears to my eyes. It was my gateway drug to the foo fighters anyway... (oh, and give it a spin on a propper stereo, the hilarious overproduction only unfolds loud and with full frequency range, not on phone speakers :-))
You should records some music theory lessons. I have probably learned more music theory in 12mins than I did throughout years of playing guitar. I think many will agree. Top notch.
Love your channel brother. Been listening since Permission to Land. Love to see how fast your channel grows. Also, Dinner Lady Arms is the most underrated song ever.
I'm learning so much from this channel and already found a bunch of new bands to listen to. I often find it boring and too technical when you see those greatest album type shows and they break down the songs but Justin is so engaging, knowledgeable and talented and I can't get enough!
I see Foo Fighters in the same vane as Queen (which is ironic that they are so connected personally) in that they do things their way, they are talented AF and they really connect to the world with their music and personalities. Not everyone connects with their music but everyone likes at least one song by them and not everyone who loves them loves every song but they are undeniably talented. They also don't act like rockstars which is refreshing. I also think they hold alot of love in the community because they are doing things outside of the band to great success (Dave has Them Crooked Vultures and what he did with Queens of the Stoneage, Taylor has (had... still not used to that...) the Coattails and NHC and sat in as drummer or vocalist with alot of big names, Chris has his own band, Rami has done work with like everyone and was still in The Wallflowers while touring with Foo's and Pat Smear is, well, Pat Smear... Nate is really the only one who doesnt do much beyond the band but he has been there since day one) and they are just genuinely nice guys who support other acts even if they arent their favorite.
you’re absolutely right on with the big star comparison, in terms of the vocal delivery/cadence. i’m curious; if you’re into big star, do you have any opinions on elliott smith??
I had this with both Idles and GVF, he's so constructive even when he's not overly keen on a band that you pretty much have to seek them out to draw your own conclusions, I fell in love with Idles almost immediately, Greta Van Fleet was a much harder sell for me but I eventually found a few tracks that are (to me) brilliant. It's his even handedness regarding music that makes me want to check out the band's he talks about. He's the music reviewer we all could do with!
Justin, it would be really fun if you made a video where you talk about The Ark and Ola Salo! I really enjoy your videos and I also like your philosophy and how you think around different artists and tunes.
Quality analysis JH, as ever. Do Big Star next / soon (definitely shades of ‘Thirteen’ here) and definitely get into The Fannies (especially Gerard’s lovely bass - maybe something on melodic bass would be good).
Damn! I watch a video where you mention Tim Pierce...so I have taken notice...and two videos later you mention Alex Chilton and Big Star. Big Star are basically patron saints (and rightfully so) of my favorite subgenre of R&R music, Power Pop. You not only really get theory and composition but your reference points tell me you truly get the nuances that make Rock N' Roll great. I feel as though you not unlike myself have spent countless hours listening to albums and diving down rabbit holes to devour as much great music as you could muster. I love your channel and the videos you post. I can be honest and say that sometimes I don't feel like I will enjoy a video simply by it's thumbnail, title or description but I usually end up coming away entertained, informed (often times both) but certainly enriched in some shape or form! Cheers and keep 'em coming down the bar. PS. I think the Big Star song you were referencing is "Thirteen". Good on ya!
Yeah that chord you're talking about is a Sus2nd. They have that big, chiming feel and create tension, as do the Sus4 chords as they're replacing the 3rd of the chord (which determines its key centre) with the 2nd or 4th respectively. That's useful in rock as it means the chords key centre is more ambiguous and gives it a harder sound/feel as there's no resolution within the chord(the 3rd in the chord determines the key that chord belongs to, that's why power chords-just the root and 5th-are alsoideal for rock as they have a stern quality about them). They work particularly well on guitar as the 3rd often sounds a bit 'off' due to the imprecise nature of guitar neck intonation especially when you combine it with distortion.
As a fellow fortygenarian I would never have assumed I would enjoy, or watch, a video of someone doing their homework... But bravo sir! Away to dig into darkness archive 🙏
As always, thank you so much for posting! I really admire your deep knowledge of music theory, bands and most of all, the presentation of information that’s easy to understand to everyday people. Cheers!

Hey @Justin Hawkins Rides Again! I’ve watched a few of your videos and I have to say that they’re really enjoyable (and different than other content that I watch on UA-cam). I like how you analyze the hell out of songs, both musically and lyrically, and it is pretty educational. It’s also fun to watch you do your own take on a song in the moment (e.g. throw a tiny little solo after a riff in this Foo Fighters video). I was in a band for 7 years in middle school/high school/college and we listened to your albums a lot when they first came out. The albums rocked hard as a mother f*cker and I really appreciated that you guys weren’t afraid to throw down some really sick riffs and solos (not enough bands solo… I assume its because it is hard and requires lots of serious dedication and practice, but I’m glad you guys do it). Keep doing your thing and thanks for keeping the channel going.

I'd like to watch a video of you explaining who inspired you as a front man (David Lee Roth? Steven Tyler?) Thanks, Thomas from Italy
minor corrections, if i'm not wrong(I don't think I am but I know some will say I am) that C9 is actually C2, because the 9 requires there to be a 7 as well, and the "Asus4" is actually just D4 or Dadd4, to be a true suspension it has to resolve to a natural chord note, which it doesn't do in this case.
Noel Gallagher always anchors B & E strings in 3rd fret with pinky and ring finger when playing G, EM, C, F etc. Good little trick that. Foos are really layered as one plays at top of guitar, one plays in the middle and one plays near bottom. Gives the song some real depth.

Excellent video as always Justin. Don't change a thing, no matter what some of those see you next Tuesdays asked in the 'comment reaction' video 🤘🔥🤘
For a second I thought you would start playing Rave Down by Swervedriver. Is it true that their original bass player worked for The Darkness?
Noel Gallagher always anchors B & E strings in 3rd fret with pinky and ring finger when playing G, EM, C, F etc. Good little trick that. Foos are really layered as one plays at top of guitar, one plays in the middle and one plays near bottom. Gives the song some real depth.
Uffff i was scared you would forget the OutRoOoOO
It really does have a lot of Big Star in that chord sequence. Good call.
Just found your channel.
Like it so far.
Also, people with JDH as their initials are the best. 8^)
Hey, thanks!
