Whenever I hear "Dreams" it takes me back to when I was a little kid in the 70's and its a powerful fond nostalgic emotional memory. Stevie's haunting vocals and Micks solid drumming and the whole Fleetwood sound, they can do no wrong.
Christine McVie was a master pianist but also a fantastically complex songwriter, beautiful singer, and with Stevie Nicks and Lyndsey Buckingham the greatest harmonies in the history of music
love that you mentioned Mark Knopfler as on of your favorite guitarists. Such a longtime fan of some of his solo stuff and the Dire Straits catalog. He really invented his own sound, and made finger picking so appealing to try out!
Started out listening to Rumours and Tusk, but completely fell in love with Kiln Houses, Future Games and even Buckingham Nicks. Every iteration of this band is/was special and beautiful in their own way. Always a staple for long drives.
Justin Hawkins drops wisdom on us so reliably. It's important in all the parts of your life to distinguish between what's interesting and what's important.
I enjoy you’re observation of Rumours Justin, and you are so right that it’s the music first. But with this album, the love dynamics are the soul of the album. Without the implosion of John and Christine’s marriage, and Lindsay and Stevie’s relationship, this would not exist. And isn’t that surely the essence of great art, when that raw pain (or joy) move’s the creators to express themselves. And don’t forget Mick Fleetwood’s position too, where although married, with young children, perhaps he too was developing feelings for Stevie at this time. (they did later get together) But THEN, they went on with purpose to hold it all together and express themselves so well. And as adults, we can understand and connect with all these emotions because they are so universal. Even the name, “Rumours”, relates to the gradual understanding of each member of the band what was going on around them. REST IN PEACE Christine xxx
As a member of a successful FM tribute band, I can honestly say that the appreciation for Fleetwood Mac's music spans all genders, cultures and ages. Perhaps this is truly the era of "Dad Rock" more so than current popular music. Keep up the great work on your channel Justin. You are insightful, inspirational and entertaining, a rare talent today.
The clip at 8:38 is from a Fleetwood Mac tribute act that I've totally forgotten the name of - but they do sound like the real deal. Love the videos, just found the channel tonight.
They’re an incredible band and I revisit their best stuff regularly. It borders on being criminal that no one has converted their story into a movie. To say there’s a tale or two there is somewhat of an understatement.
I was six when Rumours came out, we had it on 8-track, thank goodness my Mom always had a great and eclectic taste in music. I literally just relived the best part of my childhood in the 70s, the music! Thank you for the walk down memory lane, you passion for such a wide range of music is plain to see xo
I only "discovered" Peter Green a few years back and he quickly became my favourite guitarist of all time. The sheer emotion in his playing, the sense of discovery of finding some amazing live tracks. Such a short period of time and yet so prolific in that time. BB King apparently said he was 'the only one who gave him cold sweats'. I honestly believe Green Manalishi is in with a shout of being the first metal song ever which is quite fitting saying as it's basically the soundtrack of a mental breakdown. Heard Ozzy on Broken Record Podcast talking about how they used to go and watch Fleetwood Mac and so that's good enough for me to assume an inspiration!
It's one of the few bands that truly listen to what one another are playing. John McVie's bass lines are extraordinarily on the mark, know just what to play to fill things out. This can be said for all the members of the band. You can tell they really loved crafting music.
These are just delightful videos. They remind me of great music I haven't heard in a while, and Justin's commentary is always good-natured and amusing. Bravo!

My dad introduced me to fleetwood mac, over 20 years ago, when I was in high School. I still listen to them. their live show on dvd "The dance" is still incredible....and there they do Silver spring. I absolutely love that song.....and it's all better live
My dad always said this was the best road-trip album when I was a kid. So we listened to it quite a bit when traveling the western US. It’s one of the rare things I actually agree with him!
There’s something magical about FM’s hits. I love the minimalist guitar flourishes Buckingham provides to accentuate those songs (where he plays a more Joey Santiago style). Other things that made them very unique- the band’s best singer was the ‘quiet one’. And their non-hit songs were extremely weird and experimental. The only other super successful band I can think of from that period whose non-hit material was as strange and off-kilter as FM would be ‘The Cars’. There was something oddly (almost subversively) dark about both those bands. That ‘darker’ element becomes more conspicuous once you’ve fully explored their catalogs
My favorite part j Hawkins podcast is when he figures out what the song is doing on his fret board onda fly...right Infront of everyone. His talent is genius. I eat my heart out.
'Tango In The Night' is my banger album, never feel the need to skip a track on it, which is my test of a banger and ironically I had a "friend" who jacked while listening to Fleetwood Mac... !
I love Fleetwood Mac. Definitely one of the most colossal bands whose influence crosses genres incredibly. I’d love to hear you talk about the Buckingham Nicks record that preceded Rumors. One of the most gorgeous records to have been produced at the time and beyond.
Grew up listening to WLS-Chicago so FM was certainly an integral part of my 70s childhood. In the 80s, Tango in the Night was in constant rotation (1987) in the Cochrane Lounge at the student union at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne during my year abroad as an undergraduate. Consequently, I am a big fan of dad rock and FM. They are a great band.
It’s impossible to separate the personal relationship aspect from Rumors. Two couples within the band were breaking up, one of those half-couples was sleeping with the drummer… and they were writing songs about it and playing on them collectively, as it was all happening! Those things are inextricable from the music because it’s what inspired the music to begin with and we’ve all heard and read about it for decades now.
Thanks for reminding me how great this album is, it is just a blast to listen through the whole thing again. I would love to see another episode of "Dad Rock Greats" about Led Zeppelin or maybe a second one about Dire Straits! :D

I grew up with Fleetwood Mac. I loved both their first album and Rumors. While it really isn't our business what they went through or were going through, those experiences did inspire them to create great music. They were pretty open about what was going on with them (at least later on). What impressed me was despite all the craziness of drug inspired lyrics (Stevie mentioned - some paraphrasing - that Gold Dust Woman was about the loads of nose candy they were doing and how she thought death might be imminent if it continued) along with all the affairs going on, they still managed to tour together and keep their fans happy. Most bands wouldn't have survived this and it does speak to their professionalism. Thanks for covering them.
Mr. Buckingham is a totally under-the-radar-legend (regarding the broad public). Love his work! He and the band created timeless masterpieces, extraordinary well produced/recorded albums. ❤️🔥
OMG Justin, you continue to kick ass with your humble, but terrifyingly insightful, reflections on the music of our lives. Thank you so very much for putting yourself out there unapologetically, and breathing levity, depth, and further life into our collective musical soul. You really nail home that the clown is usually the smartest m'fer in the room. Keep it up Sir and thank you for your hard work!!
I grew up with Rumours too (I’m 50 now) and it is still my all time favourite record. I’ve never tired of it and yes, Lindsey Buckingham’s guitar sound is integral and stunning throughout. Their ‘second best’ album has to be Tango In The Night.
Love your vids, Justin! First I didn't get the magic of Fleetwood Mac, their radio hits (Don't stop etc) were not up to my alley back in the days. But Gold dust woman and esp. The chain hitted me sooo hard, I heard both tracks in record store by accident. I won't forget that moment. Such wonderful mesmerizing tracks!
The story and the struggles behind Rumours is fascinating, which to me, enhances my love for the album. I just picked up Mick Fleetwood's autobiography "Play On" from 2014. My missus read it first and loved it. I hope to start reading it myself soon
Great emotive songwriting and cool voices and performances and sounds and an interesting group dynamic that comes through the music. Heart is one of the greatest rock bands ever for probably for some of the same reasons I suspect.
One of my favourite bands and biggest influences as a songwriter. There are very few albums I consider pretty much flawless, but Rumours is certainly one of them. Incredible tunes, incredible performances, incredible production. A masterpiece.
Hi, Mr Hawkins. Just recently came across you in my in-box; it has been kinda cathartic for me to watch your videos, though it's been 2 steps 1 step back... [American Idol(as in the formulaic version of Britain's Got Talent)/You]. Anyway, I think I saw live in 1987/88 (Castaways or Roadmenders?). Just a relatively small crowd(100 or so), but it was the unexpected 'Mosh-Pit!' that I was soo unprepared for! Does Wellingborough College ring any bells
I have no clue who the Reynolds Girls are but your bit on them has me rolling…I had Rumors on cassette and played it on one of those big old recorders and I carried it around playing Fleetwood Mac at 12 years old…love your vids ✌🏻
This is a fantastic channel, and I’m super impressed with your presentation style Justin. Only one thing on this one - I actively *love* knowing the external context of what’s going on with the band when listening to the fragments in time that the album was representing. For instance - ‘Be Here Now’ - the maligned coked up 3rd oasis album - is a masterpiece imho purely because when I think of them addled up to the eyeballs going ‘Yeah one more’ with yet another key change on all around the world, it makes me laugh 😂 But I do get it - timeless music is timeless music too 👍
Rumors is an all time legendary album from start to finish, I am also a big peter green fan from bluesbreakers to fleetwood mac and don't forget john mcvie was in both he is a legend to.
Once again we agree. I would spend every summer in the mountains, with my family, as my dad worked for the Forest Service. All I did was read books and listen to music all day. My Fleetwood Mac cassette was worn out by the time I went back to school. Good times.
The clip of I Don't Wanna Know at 8:38 is a fantastic tribute band called Rumours of Fleetwood Mac. I've seen them several times and they're always amazing.
Danny kirwan and Peter green are one of the best guitar duos in rock. Head and shoulders above the yacht rock the band would go in after mystery to me.
Great harmonies, great catchy beats, great writing, great vocals, great drums, great guitars...... etc. Infectious is the term I believe. I still give Rumors a spin now and then and it never gets old.
You Make Loving Fun was about FM's lighting director who Christine was seeing at the time Rumors was recorded. That made for a tense time in the studio between Christine and John.
Future Games, Then Play On, and Mystery To Me have helped me so much and deserves so much more recognition. If you have a chance have a listen to Future Games with headphones, the guitars are amazing and will tingle your brain in many ways ;) The small inserts here and there are tiny love-notes of perfection, both to remind you they can and to let some of the music converse as a support. As much as I love the power-penta grouping of mid to late 70s, there is so much more offered to us (imo) in the earlier 68'-73' versions of the group. And yeah of course, they don't follow the same structure of having every song on the album basically be single material, but they have such an emphasized journey that lives in the arrangement of the music and the uniqueness of each musician's touch to their instrument, paired with some (not always perfect but good) lyrics.
Fleetwood Mac is what results from truly talented musicians (no free-riders) working hard to express their feelings. Man, I love it when percussionists treat their instruments as real instruments as opposed to glorified metronomes.
Danny Carey comes to mind when I read this comment. "I dont like when I see pieces of tape and weights on a drum skin when you could just tune your drums and let them sing" or something to that effect.
I’m a little late to the show and I won’t sift through over 500 comments to see if someone already mentioned this, but the late Eva Cassidy’s cover of Christine’s “Songbird” is absolutely breathtaking. Not better, just magical in it’s own way.
All time classic album for sure. You also mentioned in an interview once how good Tango in the Night is, which is one that I hadn't checked out. Always great recommendations.
I like the Buckingham -Nicks iteration, but am a Peter Green freak. Born in 72, I have been in love with Dad-Rock my whole life. I'm not adverse to contemporary music ( Nick Cave and Jason Isbell are two of my favorite writers, singers, and musicians) but In the era of Poison and even Guns and Roses, I preferred Traffic and The Band.
I obviously can't speak for everyone, but I quite like a little insight into the relationships between band members and things that were potentially happening at the time, as it gives you a further insight into the music and what potentially helped craft it. I remember you saying in a previous video about recording Hot Cakes, and how you felt some of it wasn't some of your best work as it was when you all got back together and things were a little tentative. It helps us fans/listeners gain a better understanding and a further involvement in the music 😁
this is one of my favorite bands was very lucky in the late 70s I was working Front Desk at the Astor when I checked them into their rooms. i love this band so much when I go to karaoke with my friends on the weekends I sing with live band karaoke at the hard rock Cafe Down Town Chicago I Always get a request for gold dust Woman And go your own Way .
Gawd, we're the same age.....don't know if that's good or bad...but I definitely grew up listening to these songs....they all had extensive radio play in the late 70s and early 80s. I find myself seeking out the music from that Era now a days. Thanks Justin!
My Dad bought it a year or two after it came out. All us kids loved it. As much as we loved ABBA. My mother played the cassette of ABBA Greatest Hits Vol 1 so much, the tape wore out. So Dad bought another copy. That was played to self destruction as well. SUGGESTION : I'd love to hear Justin's take on ABBA's Greatest Hits Vol1 .. and Vol2. Something a bit different
Saw them in Dublin a few years ago. They were awesome. Stevie and Christine just fantastic, Neil Finn and Mike Campbell on guitar, Mick Fleetwood still awesome. It was one big sing along. a fantastic night out. Everyone knows the songs. Just awesome. Seeing the Eagles this year for the third time. Another three hours of the hits. You can't beat 70s rock.

Rumours is a quality album but I’d be interested to hear Justin’s take on some of the earlier stuff like Oh Well. Great video!
I want him to cover The Green Manalishi.
That intro and vocal performance on Go your own way… man.. amazing
Soo many awesome songs, love the chain and don't stop takes me right back to bring young.
All my favourite bands and guitarist too Justin 🙌🏼😚🤨🥸
One of my favorite bands of all time as well. One of my biggest influences. Legends, man. Legends.
Loving the videos Justin!
A fine album indeed Justin. And like you, it brings back nostalgic memories of my childhood.
The fact that the band made an album of this quality while in the middle of imploding is a god damn miracle
But maybe that’s the reason why it had the impact that it had
absolutely rekindled my desire to listen again!!!
Forward is one of the missing words, there might be more...!
For instance - ‘Be Here Now’ - the maligned coked up 3rd oasis album - is a masterpiece imho purely because when I think of them addled up to the eyeballs going ‘Yeah one more’ with yet another key change on all around the world, it makes me laugh 😂
But I do get it - timeless music is timeless music too 👍
Justin I'd love to hear you talk about Violent Femmes in some capacity. They're 'the band that was always being played in my household as a kid'!
Rumors is an all time legendary album from start to finish, I am also a big peter green fan from bluesbreakers to fleetwood mac and don't forget john mcvie was in both he is a legend to.
RIP, Christine 🕊 a true legend. You should do a cover of 'Songbird' because you sounded magnificent without trying. ❤
Always love these vids. Please do one on David Bowie. Would love to know your own personal views on the Ziggy stardust album!
Once again we agree. I would spend every summer in the mountains, with my family, as my dad worked for the Forest Service. All I did was read books and listen to music all day. My Fleetwood Mac cassette was worn out by the time I went back to school. Good times.
I love Fleetwood Mac too, as well as the "dad rock" you referenced. You are citing a fair chunk of my play list!
Grew up w rumors and tusk. Both albums were always around the family stereo. Soundtrack to my youth
Great harmonies, great catchy beats, great writing, great vocals, great drums, great guitars...... etc.
Infectious is the term I believe. I still give Rumors a spin now and then and it never gets old.
I think really the power of the lyrics and emotion in the songs is tied directly to the relationships. They poured everything out into those albums.
One word...harmonies....there beautiful...loving a good harmony since bloody Greg...whenever he was about
You Make Loving Fun was about FM's lighting director who Christine was seeing at the time Rumors was recorded.
I bloody love dad-rock
I’m a little late to the show and I won’t sift through over 500 comments to see if someone already mentioned this, but the late Eva Cassidy’s
cover of Christine’s “Songbird” is absolutely breathtaking.
Oh I love Fleetwood Mac and was coincidentally wearing my FM t-shirt while watching this! Dad rock FTW!
this is one of my favorite bands was very lucky in the late 70s I was working Front Desk at the Astor when I checked them into their rooms. i love this band so much when I go to karaoke with my friends on the weekends I sing with live band karaoke at the hard rock Cafe Down Town Chicago I Always get a request for gold dust Woman And go your own Way .
Rumours and Tango in the night are absolutely brilliant, I love these albums ❤
Thank you Justin for Rekindling my Urge 🧨🔥
Gawd, we're the same age.....don't know if that's good or bad...but I definitely grew up listening to these songs....they all had extensive radio play in the late 70s and early 80s. I find myself seeking out the music from that Era now a days. Thanks Justin!
I was also very young child hearing Fleetwood Mac Rumors album. Just instinctly that's fantastic music. Love them!!!
I listen to them nearly everyday. Probably for the last 20 years or so. Songbird, one of my favorites!
