Dude - you make a difference - seriously. Years of disconnected licks and noodling is coming together because of you’re persistent message. Can’t thank you enough.
Diggin' those harmonic minor licks. Been following this channel for a few years now. You're playing has been mind-blowing from day one, but one thing I think we can all take from you is that you're constantly growing. I'm a hack, but music is still an important part of my life. No matter the level, the main thing is to just keep growing and getting deeper into music and life. As someone who is about to qualify for social security, life gets better with the years, if you let it. Here's wishing everyone that. It's good for your health, and it's downright fun. Thank you, Guthrie, for always serching.
Thank you so much for repeating this shit over and over it’s finally starting to sink in my rusty cage. I listen to you while I am getting ready for work at 4am. When you are talking I am visualizing the fret board and making my mind see what you are saying. You have a gift for teaching.☮️🎸🎶
You do a great job of explaining CAGED. It seems that some don’t realize that they still need to know some basic theory to go with it. You talked about flattering the 3rd to make a minor but if one doesn’t know where the 3rd is they are lost. Thanks so much for these videos.
Thanks! Guthrie your knowledge and insight is much appreciated and opened up my understanding of not only the guitar but making music with it! Thanks again!
Thanks so much! Your consistent videos on the caged system encouraged me to look at it instead of being intimidated by it. Things are finally making sense to me! Keep going your videos are awesome!!
Im in vancouver Canada and just wanted to say THANK YOU!!! Ive been workin on this and have seen the light! just got to get the chord changes down in the scales. Thanks again for your time.
Hey Guthrie! I'm just watchin' this video again, and I wanted to comment about your story about drivin' out on the "back roads." I've done that, like in the 1980s, we started out on the Blue Ridge Parkway in TN (I think), then started turning down back roads. We just kept turning into smaller roads, ended up in KY! Yeah, it was nice, and great scenery! That's a great thing to do. Thanks for all you do, GT! 👍👍👍
What I like about listening to you is all the cool tidbits licks and tricks that you’re kind enough to share with us. I’m just a hobbyist who’s enjoying trying to figure out the guitar.👍😎👍
The fish comment is: Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish, and you feed him for life... I'm starting to get into the CAGED system and its mind blowing, might have to book some lessons with you to teach me how to fish... Good stuff, bud. Top notch.
Guthrie, you are a star and a legend!! Thanks for your explanations, really appreciate it. The building blocks are starting to make sense to me now. I can tell my brain is making those subconscious muscle memory connections and my ears are tuning in and hearing "melody" that I've never heard myself play before. I know there's plenty more work to be done but I can tell that getting there is going to be fun.....I agree with you...for me, what you're teaching really does work.
What a great channel, GT. So much stuff to absorb and practice. CAGED is nothing new, but you have explained it to us in a way that makes lightbulbs go off I get it now!!!!
I am going over your Truefire lessons for 100th time. Im prayin you are putting something else out. I heard you mention Truefire. Anyway, these lessons were done quite awhile ago. And you just have a natural way about you. I mean teaching. Even though you say you are self taught. Its Fn Amazing really. I go over both lessons over and over. I advise everyone to do same. Its not easy stuff, which is what I want. Its perfect for me. I will keep repeating the lessons. 64 yo with cancer for 23. It keeps me goin Brah. Ty
"A vast world of uncharted territory. Everytime you pick this thing up, its like, what am I gonna do now"? That was the best part of this video for me. I realized the importance of the CAGED system before I found this channel, but I watch all his videos even if its information I think I already know. That line at the end made this one more than worth it. Its good to know that even Guthrie Trapp feels that way when he picks up a guitar. I have a pretty good ear, and I understand the fretboard pretty well. After watching this, I think I just need to learn to use both at the same time. Its easy to get lost when you are playing, either in what you are hearing, or trying to play the notes you think should work on paper. I think finding a way to balance that will make my playing more musical. Thank you for these videos, they are helping more people than you know.
gt.. now that we are friends😂I want to tell you what an eye opening, actually should say ear opening experience it has been watching your videos. My dad and uncles played guitar so I was around it but never understood it, i was more interested in ball. A statement you made today about the fret board and the enormous amount of music it contains hit home. watching you play your music all over the neck with seamless effort is impressive and sort of overwhelming. How can I ever get even close to that! I am 74 and don't have to get that good but a light bulb came on yesterday. Working the c shaped e area and incorporating the chord tones, major scale and pentatonic I actually made a little music. Like a kid on Christmas morn. Sorry this is so long but thanks for what you do for us wannabe's.
Hitting on all cylinders, GT!! That outro was to perfection. Thanks for the Gypsy stuff, too!! The comment section might best be called, *The Review Board.* 😂😂 It seems a lot of guys need to review this stuff quite a bit. Folks, if you really want to grasp this stuff, play for a solid 30 minutes every day. Plow through the frustration. The other side is magical. Don't worry if every note sounds nothing like GT. He doesn't sound like Uncle Larry, and he doesn't sound like Mr. Ruch. It's nice to grab some of these things as they do but it's nothing like BEING YOURSELF. We need you to be YOU. We already have GT, and Buk. 'Nuff said.
hey man, loving these - i always learn something! ive been playing and teaching full time for 12 years now and tha caged stuff is so vital AND so simple, a lot of the comments youre on about ( i read them too) were trying to over complicate a simple idea. keep it up man!
You put good info out for consumption. Sometimes if you have 10 people you are trying to explain a concept to they all may understand it slightly differently and it takes trying to say the same thing in various ways to get them on the right track. Keep up the good work. I took up guitar over a decade ago after having to retire early on disability, as kind of a hobby to occupy my time. This journey has been a constant cycle of some confusion or frustration followed by "lightbulb moments" and excitement. I totally get the way individual concepts link up and become one thing and it's beautiful when that happens. Don't sell yourself short on things like modes..... you understand and use them all the time (probably under a different name or none at all other then "music"). If you know the basic concept of 7 notes in a key / 7 chords for those notes you know and use modes, without the damn "rabbit hole" confusion people get caught up in.
Loving your stuff man, shit that’s eluded me for years is beginning to make sense thanks to you! It’s getting from the chords to the arpeggios to the pentatonic to the major scale that I’m trying to get down now. Any pointers? I’d call the comments section “the shooting gallery”, somewhere everyone can come and shoot the shit with you. Many thanks man
Bro, what a time to be alive. I can reach into my back pocket and pull out some of the best guitar instruction and just cool mofo (you). Really appreciate what you do man. It’s right and it works. I’m actually getting better.
Something that helped me a lot was learning the C major scale on the B string. Starting at the first fret, using just the D major and D minor shapes. Three major chords. Three minor chords and that pesky diminished chord at the 12th fret. You can easily see the Root, 3rd and 5th and how the minor chord is just one note that moves back one fret.
I really dig the no BS approach/style on this channel. I'm personally not here for an in depth lesson in music theory or anything like that. I just wanna be able to pick out some sweet notes and make 'em sing a little. As for the messages... maybe call it The Soundboard? Noise Gate might be appropriate for some comments but not as friendly..haha. Anyway, keep up the good work as it's much appreciated.
Hey, my wife and I saw you at the Underdog last Monday. Best night of our 4 night stay in Nashville. Although your gear was giving you problems, it sounded great to us. My wife is the person who got the cute chick to pass around the tip jar. We are glad that we got to see you
I would go so far as to say caged is all built on octave shapes, and we can layer or build our chords, scales, arpegios, and licks on. I'm so happy to see the constant reaffirming of the value of caged on this channel. Wonderful job!!
You was up in my neck of the woods -and we is Country. 😂 I’m in Northwest Cheatham County, right on the Robertson/Cheatham line, the smell of tobacco barns in the fall is the smell of home. Thanks for all you share and come on back anytime!
Call it “The VCB with apologies to Uncle Larry box.” Or more seriously, maybe “The Clipboard Notes.” Thanks for this lesson. Learning more and more. And the tobacco barns were incredible….didn’t know they smoked like that.
Excellent! So much here, listen with your ears. Listen to G, know what chord your playing over, what is coming next etc. The long intro is perfect, try playing what you think the chords are in the beginning solo part. You can and should hear the chords outlined. Then try to pickup the "fun" stuff! Thank you again for these lessons G.
Hey Guthrie, thanks for outlining the "system" clearly and making a point of not overly complicating it! I found Levi Clay's Guided practice books invaluable in making CAGED and many other fundamental things crystal clear! There is no denying, you do have to learn some theory to get the most out of it :)
Christmas shopping - oh man, did you have to mention that? Just in from Larry's latest - thanks Guthrie, so much good stuff, always learning. That 335 sounds fabulous btw.
When you can see all the chords up and down the neck🎵🎶 knowing all your major scales in every KEY❤ one major two is minor three is minor four major five major six major sevens diminished flatten the 7 make it a dominant 7 and that is the pivoting point brings you to the third in any direction of the next chord❤ and I still suck😂
You're right GT and stop arguing with these guys. Know your maj, min & D7 triads across all CAGED positions in every key and lets move on. Thank you for the truth you're sharing.
I very much appreciate your no BS approach to guitar playing, especially since there are so many people out there putting out the wrong information. Would love to see more on your approach to improvising over minor chord progressions (minor pentatonic, minor scale, minor arpeggio, etc) up the neck. Thanks for dealing with all the bullshit so we don’t have to! Cheers 😎

The same people who will spend 67 years arguing that there’s a separate minor CAGED system are the same ones who will spend 67 years on the internet saying Sweet Home Alabama is in G major.
How do you hear it? D mixolydian as 1 7b 5? Im not that great a guitarist but leads in G don't work for me so I don't think its in G either. Isn't there an F chord touched in that song as well on the "oo oo oo" part?
Guthrie I’m a long time drummer and have taken up guitar in the past couple years. You hit the nail on the head when you said it’s not complicated but it’s hard. But I get it. Learn the chord shapes and triads. Learn the pentatonics, major, minor, and dominant scales around the chords. Combine to make music (the hard part!). Btw I like Trapp Talk for the comment section. I’ll keep thinking on it.
Guthrie, Your playing has inspired me so much I can't put it into words. I can put it into notes! And that's what counts. Btw, love the neck wear, the dog tag. I've been looking for one. Where'd you get yours?

Great content, you are spot on about that region Tenn/ Kentucky, got to be careful you don’t go to far back in the woods …you could end up cooking breakfast for someone the rest of your life!😀
Guthrie keep teaching the way you teach, I for one appreciate what your doing
I appreciate that!
Dude - you make a difference - seriously. Years of disconnected licks and noodling is coming together because of you’re persistent message. Can’t thank you enough.

I’ve been getting sucked into politics the last few weeks. This video is like a breath of fresh air! Thanks Guthrie!!
That intro is in the top 5 of my favorites. Beautiful piece of music.
Glad you liked it. I have no idea what that is. D- to A7 basically
Longtime UA-camr, first-time commenter. You move me, brother. Thank you for sharing all your experiences.

The only thing better than watching Unle Larry is getting done his Episode and UA-cam says a new Episode of Guthrie 1min ago. Love y'all 🎸 🎶 ❤️
Uncle Larry has got more inner feeling and not as robotic. Both guys are phenomenal.

Trapp talking. I like that. Great lesson, again, Guthrie. Thanks, Ian.
Wow man what a episode again. Thanx a lot. And from min 27:00 is absolutely killing. GT is a Master
Oh man, this last run at the end of the video! Amazing!

Thanks so much for sharing your fantastic guitar fret board knowledge! 🇦🇺🦘
My pleasure!
Great insightful lesson. And I LOVE that guitar! Gorgeous.
Hope you’re feeling better. Keep the great work and sharing

Thanks GT!
Your videos look and sound great- good job w lighting and camera settings!
Just bought a new guitar. I'm gonna sort this shit out and get learning cos Guthrie speaks the truth!!
Thank you for getting folks away from over-thinking things. Learn your major scales well. Hear what notes change with chord progression.
Way cool Guthrie! As always!
Thanks for the visit
Guthrie,
You are a phenomenon. Thank you for your work.
What a BEAUTIFUL intro, wow!
Love your playing man
Thanks man!
Brilliant as always my friend. Thanks for bringing it like you do.

‘View Wars Section’
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks, GT! You're the best! 👍👍👍
I’ve been to the bell witch cave a few times back in the day. Beautiful spot for sure!
You are the man. CAGED just puts people in prison, GT is busting us out like a Band on the Run.
What do you mean by CAGED puts people in prison?
You're right GT and stop arguing with these guys. Know your maj, min & D7 triads across all CAGED positions in every key and lets move on. Thank you for the truth you're sharing.
Beautiful intro!! As usual... thank you ❤
ripping!! sounds amazing!

That opening was fckng amzing Holy Hallowen Hell. Dammit son.
Guthrie, you’re the man! Any tips on tackling the large task of memorizing the fretboard?
Haha get this 15:04 :) Well said Guthire! 17:38 So damn right man! 21:05 Yeah GT thats the way, put on some Kick Ass Tony Rice ❤
The same people who will spend 67 years arguing that there’s a separate minor CAGED system are the same ones who will spend 67 years on the internet saying Sweet Home Alabama is in G major.
Who also spent 67 years "playing" guitar but can only strum cowboy chords in I-IV-V 😄
How do you hear it? D mixolydian as 1 7b 5? Im not that great a guitarist but leads in G don't work for me so I don't think its in G either. Isn't there an F chord touched in that song as well on the "oo oo oo" part?

Got it. 💡 Thanks.
Love you GT! You’re the real deal!!!!keep the ‘cussin’ comin’!…. Up here in New jersey we use the F*word .. just like any other!!! Caged!! Triads!!!🎸
I appreciate that!
Great info! The chat area could be 'the chalk board'
Dropping knowledge! When you can explain it simply, you know it.
keep teaching that way man love it tanks
as always, thanks… peace
Great stuff as always - regarding the comments - "Let's see what fell through the Trapp door"
Guthrie, Your playing has inspired me so much I can't put it into words. I can put it into notes! And that's what counts. Btw, love the neck wear, the dog tag. I've been looking for one. Where'd you get yours?

Welcome 👍
I love your guitar. I gotta get me one of those! 😃❤
When is your course that you filmed coming out? I can’t wait.
The scale pattern that connects the triads is what is different if it’s a major or minor chord (key).
There’s no minor CAGED. C maj is CEG. A minor, relative minor, is ACE. Find the A arpeggios, know which is the 3rd, and drop it a half step. Can’t grow without knowing those 3 chord notes and where they are in the arpeggios. Guthrie, you’ve been teaching gold!

Ha! Indeed
Guthrie doesn’t plug his Artistworks course enough, but it is an amazing deal for the content you get.
