I cant believe it. My uncle has spotted a five year old me with my grandparents. Its the photo of the 'Good intent pub' in the shopping chapter. A woman says that it was a weekday so no kids in the photo. She clearly didnt spot me at the bottom right of the photo holding my grandfather's hand:)
@@tonystone3397 My family were The Gregory's who lived in Walworth Road, Manor Place. Think it got demolished in the 70's but they are still in the area today, going back generations.
I grew up in Peckham, and we loved going to the pie and mash shop, sometime we would just get the pies and liquor and mum would cook the spuds and mash them. Absolutely delicious. We also lived in Walworth Road for a while, on top of the furniture shop called Kentons.
I remember a lot of what she was talking about, I lived at Peckham, and went to Gloucester Grove Primary/Junior school. Then when I was 10 we moved to Walworth Road to a flat above 'Kentons Furniture Shop', then when I was 11, we moved to Camberwell, a street off of Camberwell Grove, called Lettsom street, and that is where I stayed until I got married in 1970, when my husband and I had a flat in Camberwell Grove and it was the first time I had had a bathroom, although hubby's parent owned their own home and he was used to all the mod cons. Then a few months after I married, my parents and brother was moved to a flat on the North Peckham Estate, it was the first time they had a bathroom, but it wasn't long before the Estate was a nightmare to live on. And despite the hardships, I still think those days were so much better than the world today.
She saw Walworth at it's best. A community of respectable white working class people. That culture and way of life was bulldozed away in the name of progress to be replaced by the notorious Aylesbury Estate which is now being regenerated over the next 20 years. The cost of bad town planning has been the extinction of the cockney way of life. Very sad.
Lived in Westmoreland Rd, Kinglake st end n216Bobby Cowels on the corner and next door was Yarwoods the Cobblers other end oppisite the new hou glass was Tomkins flower peopleother corner was Newington lodge played on the bomb sote which is now Michael Farady house and still left standing after the doodle bug was the original hour glass. Remeber silly things like the lamp lighter turning on the street gas light, Muffin man coming round ringing his bell, Knife sharpener on his bike with a large sharpening stone, roundabout on the back of the horse an cart, Bobby cowel delivering coal on his horse and cart. We had to go and clear snow from what was to me then older peoples steps and was not allowed to take money, any body passed way all houses had there curtains pulled and my dad stood by our front door withhis cap in his hand, Dad worked at Butlers Wharf until he retired. Lovely memories including the tin bath and wondeful Sunday tea, winkles, cockles eel and seed cake. Thank you you for bringinging back so many happy times
Thanks for sharing, Nice to see my old street sign, Westmoreland Rd. Do not recall any flats during my time in Westmoreland Rd with the eception of Michael Faraday house next to the new Hour Glass circa 1954/55 plus the old flats in Kinglake St.
Yes, before that it was in Westmoreland Road, then like the lady said moved to the other side, then to where you mentioned, across from the shoe shop, Dolcis, I think it was called. I was taken to the Temple Bar on a date, and I actually played Darts in the ladies team and we played in the 'Horse and Groom', a few doors up. When we were kids, my dad used to take us to East Lane market every sunday to get Sunday tea, salad and sea food. We walked there from Peckham, and walked back home, on the way home he took us into Camberwell Green Park to play on the swings. Remember those days like they were yesterday.
I moved on 9th May 1983. My Dad for L.E.B. in Penrose Street and we lived right at The Walworth Road end of East Lane Market. I just moved 12 miles to Welling/Bexley and still live in the same house as I did when I moved 37 years ago. Where did you move to, my friend and where are you now?
Thanks mate for your reply. Last question , as that is really interesting what you have said. I have been in Bexley for 37 years near Danson Park and love it but its undeniable that more than a few Londoners who moved out through the 1970's-1990's are taken another step out towards THe Countryside and Coast . I have lost 7 customers to Norfold/Dorset etc and I fear Outer London could replicate Inner London so what prompted that move, y friend.
I lived on Penrose House as well, 1961 to mid eighties.....great childhood but must agree with you, it’s a shithole now. I recently escaped from Bermondsey to Blackfen a couple of years ago and I am absolutely loving it!
Hello MichaelSeems our lives have been similar. :) Being 66 now, I "did" say back in 1983 when I moved that around now I would move to Whitstable/Seasalter where we used to have caravans bit no chance of that. Only yesterday I was at the beautiful Oxleas Woods. Today, weather permitting Footscray Meadows (Five Arches) and I think we have 96 Open Spaces within a 6 mile radius. I'm not going to lie I DO miss the Inner London "vibe" and would go back ( Pre Covid ) every few weeks to East Lane Market but the area is not the same. I just wonder how many would have moved in those areas would have stayed unchanged as it was a great location :) Only yesterday I met someone (25 ) and his family moved from Bermondsey 20 years ago to give him a better life. Me too, Arments was the best Pie and Mash shop, mum used to take to get pies and liquor and took them home and she made her own mash. Delicious.

I grew up on the Penrose Estate right next to Carter Street Nick. Best days of my life. Sadly its all now a SHITHOLE.
One of the policemen from Carter Street was called PC Cole. He came to our school and gave a talk.

Arments near John ruskin Street in the fiftys was the very best. the pies were cooked on Coals.
Harringtons in Wandsworth Road served up excellent pie&mash
