It might be cool to swap the entertainment center with the tv stand to the right of it. Then you could put the tv on the tv stand so that it is still in front of the couch. That leaves a big space where the tv used to be for yarn stacks. You could use the wood crates to create different levels and separation in the big tv space to sort the yarn even more.

Nick don't feel so bad - I have 30 years of WIPs, UFOs and yarn I have collected over the years. Once you get a system going it gets easier. I recommend a medium size clear plastic tote with a lid for your finished objects and semi-finished objects. Then a second, larger one for the temperature blanket pieces.
One recommendation for the deep shelves - if you have multiples in the same color of yarn, put the duplicates toward the back. Then, when you pull out a skein from the front row , replace it with a skein of same color from the back row.
Also, use your yarn winder to cake up skeins that are partially used to the point they are floppy. Then you can stack the cakes in a bin.

I'm glad you found a yarn you really like that is affordable. In general I've learned to not judge a yarn until I've created a finished project and washed it.
When storing yarn in cube type storage shelves I try to put any extra skeins of a color in the back. Looks like you are figuring out what works for you.
I used to put my ball winder and shift away after every use, but more recently I found a place that I can leave my ball winder set up. Having it ready to go really makes a difference when I need to cake a skein or hank up. I used to put it off because of all the extra time it took to get everything out and set it up. Now I only have to set up the swift. If I finish a project and have a partial skein that's kind of coming apart, It's really easy to just wind it into a neat cake and tuck the tag in the center.

Long before I collected yarn I collected house plants. For me, I love seeing the greenery in your background. It creates a relaxing atmosphere and I think the yarn you are sharing stands out more.

Some notes from someone who has been knitting and crocheting for decades :
You're not going to make everyone happy with your background, so do what you like.
When I store yarn 2-deep like that, I try to keep the same (or similar) colors in front of each other
Your knitting experiment looks great! But it's pretty common for people to have a preference for one over the other. (Personally, I prefer knitting most of the time.)
Since you like having yarn in those packs, you can do something that I do...any time you buy sheets that come in those clear, zippered bags...use them for yarn!
I also like using clear bins or totes so that I can see what's in them. Especially since I prefer to put my wool in plastic boxes with lids.
I've seen some people store their finished projects in their yarn storage area...but I generally put them where I'll use them, like the closet or my blanket box in the living room. I do use those fabric bins for storing shawls. At one point I just hung them on the wall as decoration with a big dowel and some cord.

I crochet for a living, and so I can tell you this... The best storage solution is ikea Billy bookcases. You can buy as many shelves as you need. I recommend getting the corner bookcase, because you get the corner shelf with two cases in addition and you can expand as needed. You can measure your wall and get top extensions for the cases as well. You can also get a label maker and label the shelves. It comes easily off the shelves if you rearrange. The shelves are supposed to be book shelves, but they are a perfect solution for storing skeins of yarn.

    • @NatashaM-xi3qk
      @NatashaM-xi3qk Місяць тому +2

and I literally mean you can buy extra shelves to make the shelves as high or low as you need.

How fun watching you figure out your yarn storage. I store mine by color in clear bins from Michaels, but I don't have as much yarn as you do. Also, I belong to a knitting/crochet group that meets once a week at the local community center to chat and work on projects. We have 5 different charities that our finished projects (baby blankets, beanies, wheelchair lap blankets, scarves, etc.) go to. Hospitals, domestic rescue organizations, and other groups love everything we make. 💖💖💖

Hi Nick, it can be overwhelming, can’t it, when organising yarn stashes. I have two rooms where I store yarn and find the IKEA cabinets with the cloth cubes are great. Looks nice and plus I use the top of the cabinet for my yarn books, tins, a few rolled up blankets, etc etc. As for finished projects I bought a huge wicker basket to display rolled up blankets. Of course I give a lot of my blankets away to family and also to charity. Thanks for your videos! Really enjoy watching them.🧶😊

When I have a project like your rainbow cushion, you mentioned, I put the yarn in a large Ziploc bag and write on the outside with a sharpie, the hook size and name of the project. If I have a print out of the pattern, I also include that inside. Love your video! I’ve never related to anyone as much as when you slowly walked toward the back of your couch.😊

I think we all have a little area when we keep things that we are working on that looks a bit disheveled. I know I sure do in the corner close to where I sit. The bulk of my yarn is in soft zipper totes under my bed segregated by fibers. I have a very small amount (not even half of a tote) of acrylic yarn the rest I have with like fibers. The truboo yarn is fantastic yarn to work with. When you get started you are gonna want more. I have a friend who gave me a Packers pattern to make for our brethren in the trans community. I am now spinning my own fiber into yarn and keeping all my nips to recycle into the fiber I card and spin since they are all natural fibers. I remember warning you some months back about the yarn getting out of control. I am wanting to sell a good bit of mine to consolidate it into the yarns I love working with the most. You should keep with the knitting and use the smaller fibers and needles to me it's more satisfying and the fabric made has a more "upscale" appearance. The truboo and 4.5-5mm needles would make an amazing soft and drapie knit piece of fabric. Keep up the good work.

Your pups are Georgeous. Love seeing them.
We bought two shoe racks on wheels with lots of cubbies.

Hi Nick, I agree with the person who encouraged non yarn background due to being less distracting.
Looks like a BUNCH of shelves may be needed for your yarn and projects. You could fill that whole wall with open shelves!
I purchased shelving units last year, to organize, and already needing to find another wall for shelves OR to stop buying yarn. 😢

For storage that's 2 layers deep, if you have multiple skeins of the same yarn, put the duplicates in the back row of the same cubby. For me, I tend to buy even numbers if skeins, so I put one skein directly behind the other of the same type and color of yarn. Alternatively, if you have tons of one type and color (like one you consistently use for the birder of your granny squares), you can put that in the back as you will probably remember that yarn. ...I hope this makes sense.
I heard crocheters find the German style of knitting makes more sense than the other style. I learned that from an amazing knitter who used to crochet and learned to knit by watching UA-cam tutorials.

Nick Hello, You did good with your yarn. As long as it looks neat that is all that counts. If you want to know the yarns in the back rows you can jot the colors down on paper and put it in your bin you are hiding things in and you will know where to look for a certain color. If you want you can use the fold down bins if you turn them on their side and put yarn in them to display it. Just a couple suggestions. I'll be a friend whether you do give aways or not. I do get into give aways though. You can turn the crates on their side to, to put books or yarn in to display. A Friend!!!

If you use Ravelry, I would recommend listing your Yarn there, then put it in your bins by brand weight and color. Then in Ravelry you can note which bin your Yarn is in Also, if you keep a spreadsheet, you could do sort of the same thing there. If you’re really into Excel, on a separate sheet, you can do lists of the brand and the weight. I wouldn’t necessarily do it with color because different color yeah I’m not all Yarn is the same as as far as colors is concerned. Then in your sheet that you’re listing your stuff in, you can do drop downs that link to the list on another sheet, you can have fun with Excel if you’re into Excel.
