The best romantic subplot ever. The "girlfriend" character is always just a one-dimensional boring plot element but Grace Kelly's arc is fantastic. She shows Jefferies that she can be adventurous and resourceful and seeing them working as a team is both engaging and believable. Plus I love that she fakes reading travel books only to go back to her fashion magazines. It shows that she hasn't compromised her entire personality but still cares about Jefferies enough to do the kinds of things he wants.
I think that it shows that in the end she won. The casts shows that he wont live her anymore. and the magazines shows that his adventures are over for the sake of her fashion.
@@ori5021 not at all, she showed she was excited for and capable of adventure through her parkouring into the room of mr. thorwald and getting arrested just in an attempt to solve the murder and help jeff. i don't think anyone has to "win" in this scenario, they're in a relationship and they are both willing to compromise for eachother imo. the book shows that she is putting in an effort to understand jeff's lifestyle, and the magazines show that her personality still remains nevertheless
@@sampam123 Sam is spot on. I just saw the film last night for the first time in my life. There was no competition to see who won in the relationship. It was just a great love story about two people’s attachment to one another evolving and growing even stronger. Her adventurous spirit won him over in the end and they live happily ever after. Incredible film all around.
@@Gravy_Master I agree that I wasn’t a competition, but I also agree that she won. She isn’t reading the book to understand him, just to seem interested. And when he wasn’t watching and fell asleep, she stopped reading it. She was interested in the window mystery though for sure, but she knew that doing it would make him want to marry her. Which was what she wanted from the beginning
This was the first (and my personal favorite) Hitchcock film I'd ever seen, and I was at first really surprised to see a "happy ending" in the end. When I saw "Vertigo" I thought the ending in that film was the kind of downer ending I was expecting from a Hitchcock film. But that shows how flexible and open Hitchcock was at filmmaking, handling both happy and downer endings.
this really is one of hitchcock's best. it's got subtlety, style, and real insight into how quirky and twisted human nature is. and it's got grace kelly.
"If this is dreaming, I hope I'll never wake, but dream forever in your arms, oh Lisa". A very sinister ending indeed. Both MC's legs are broken and now he is completely at the mercy of Lisa, who fakes her readiness to adapt to MC's lifestile, hiding her true plans for their life. The man is done for - Lisa (aka Thorwald) will get that ring from him. P.S. True Hitchcock's romantic irony.
At the very least, this film is a masterpiece of NYC local color, c. 1953: Great art and too historical artifact--of the place in its time, and characters, costumes, manners and mores.
Up against On the Waterfront, film did not win Oscar. But it did win best film from the Edgar Allen Poe Awards.and the British BAFTA, which too gave Grace Best Actress. Likely Jimmy Stewart didn't win, again, from great competition--but too because here his acting is wholly naturalistic, underplayed (no shriek outs). All acting in this film is great, wholly nuanced and believeable.
Lisa is awesome. She doesn’t give up her own interests for her man. She’s not going to sacrifice her own passions in order to be compatible with Jeff. She can share his interests and still have some of her own.
Yes, it is "Lisa" ... nice touch, Hitchcock! ;) And she lived happily ever after, her man now immobilely where she wanted him! Film a fabulous tragicomedy. Rich in what the French call "magnificent trifles."
This is not the original ending; this Universal studios re-release fades to black, cutting out the last moments of the Paramount studios cinema version.

love the film but is the ending not just the saddest thing you will ever see? Poor Leesa can never just be herself with Jeff because he constantly wants her to read and do what he wants her to do. The only time she gets to do as she pleases is when he is asleep... or closing his eyes...
So in the end she won... The casts shows that he wont live her anymore. And the magazines shows that his adventures are over for the sake of her fashion.
I don't know what my deal is: I really liked this movie but could not STAND Grace Kelly. I'm not sure if I would have found her character any less forced and annoying if another actress had been cast, but I really felt that Hitchcock shoehorned in the romantic subplot.
Its so there teamwork is believable. Which this film shows it perfectly. For the 50's this was very well executed. Also Grace is one of the first examples of a women making it on her own the right way in the city. Its why she pursues Stewart. He excites her more than any runway or dress could.

Grace kelly = perfection
My favourite film. Grace was the definition of perfection.
I don't think any woman has ever looked as beautiful as Grace Kelly does in this movie.
Rear Window is one of the best Hitchcock movies, along with Rope and Vertigo. Everyone has their picks of his best works.
This and To Catch a Thief are my favorites.
Psycho is really good too.
North by Northwest and Dial M for Murder are also very good movies
I loved the Miss Lonelyhearts storyline. It was real moving. I hope she and the musician get together or at least become friends.

For me one of the best endings in the history of cinema 👌🏻
My mom actually named me after Grace Kelly's character in this movie. Leesa Carol.

Raymond Burr stole the movie. He didn't have to speak. He did it all with facial expressions!
when stanley comes home lol
Guess there's someone out there for everyone
I cheer for that man.
R.I.P Grace Kelly
I was happy for Ms. lonely heart...
And the young couple's bickering. LOL.

Grace’s stylist should’ve won an Oscar for this movie.
A wonderful film.
this film is so well done, Hitchcock had the best craft.
Her shoes! They’re gorgeous
Exquisite Grace Kelly.
Great film.

Que hermosa mujer que era Grace 🤩
Grace is sooo beautiful.
Peace is finally restored, in this Greenwich, New York neighborhood.
Is the last word of the song playing: "Lisa"?
Omg, I never noticed that before! Great catch! 👍

Stanley "forgot to knock"? How can you tell ... he is on the door's other side that we do not see. And with the din of the music ... .
I think it would have been cool to see a wedding ring on her finger
Does anyone know who is the singer of the song "Lisa."
+earthboundJim Some incredibly horseshit dude. Really bad song.
I wish I knew. If there is a whole song I'd like to hear it. Beautiful.

To perfect the honeymoon romance, "three's a crowd." Parent figures must vanish.
Anyone else curious what happened to the nurse character? If everyone else is in this scene, why not her?
Like the cheese, Thelma Ritter stands alone.

Can anyone tell me what are the lyrics to the song?
The Lisa song absolutely sucks. The really great closing credit music was cut. It was a retro Italian band version of That's Amore. Grazie!

Not Kelly's fault you're in your feelings about Hitchcock's romantic subplot.
