How to use 3.7V Battery to Power 5 Meter 12V LED Strip in 2023

  • If you are looking for ideas to use leds or 12V led strip to light a area far away from AC power source than you can use this method. You need a module called "Step Up Down Converter DC-DC Buck Boost" or "Boost Converter". You need this module in order to make this work.
You just need a 18650 battery that has more than 2Ah (2000mAh) and a Voltage regulator to power the LEDs. If we want more ON time for the LEDs you must lower the voltage and also check how much current we are using as well. Remember the lower the current being drawn from the battery the more hours you are able to use your LED strips or LED string lights. Lower voltage and current also lessens the brightness of the LEDs.
In conclusion the brighter the LEDs the more current is being drawn from the voltage. Lower the brightness you also less the current flow. If you have multiple same brand, same capacity batteries in parallel than you have more time to spend with your LED strips.
Note: Its easier if you just use a powerbank and just use a usb cable that has the positive and negative wires attached to the boost converter if you can't find a 18650.

I suggest using the MT3608 DC-DC Adjustable Boost Module, not the buck boost converter in the video. Thats because the one in the video has a cut off voltage of 3.8V which is not low enough.
The MT3608 DC-DC Adjustable Boost Module has a cut off voltage of 2V but don't worry that is what the battery protection board is for.

I have a boost module like that one and is rated for 1.5amps, which is not enough to handle the whole strip at full bright, it will get hot or dim the lights

Yes you are correct, it happens to the buck boost converter as well that I used in the video. 2 batteries in series is better or 3 is much better.

@@TaylorSoloaiJR just tested paint two small strips (50cm each) in parallel, and at 11v the light is bright enough and the boost converter doesn't get hot. Now the issue is the protection board. The one down here doesn't work since it's a charger nos a protection for a load, and needs to be powered to work. I think this would be better with a BMS boats that also does the balancing when charging amber discharging having more than one battery in series.

Works but why am I being limited to about 270ma? I remove the LED and measure the current directly (looks like a direct short to the XL4015E1 and how you adjust it) the current is back to where I set it. Where in the world is the issue? If I have it going from the out terms but going through the led I don't I am stumped as I said.

    Hi there, interesting video.
I'm looking for led strips that I can use to light up some Lego models. I have seen 3V Led strips working with 2 button batteries (CR2032). Apparently it can even work for 2 days in a row (but I doubt it).
My question is, can you use a 18650 battery to expend the running time or is the voltage too high for such 3V strips? Can I also add one one these modules to the circuit to recharge the battery?
What about putting 2 AAA batteries in series, that way the battery box could be thinner?
The goal is to get a very dimmed light, I really don't need a full power bright lighting. It's just for ambiance. So would I need an extra module to also dim the light to a minimum?
My current project is for a Lego Millenium Falcon back sub-light engine, measuring 30 cm long and probably adding one Led strip part (they are cuttable every Led - 60 Leds / meter) for the gunner and another one for the cockpit.
    Thanks

The module that I used in the video can also lower the voltage, so in your case 3V. The only problem with this step up and down voltage converter is it only works starting at 3.7V, so below that it will shut off.
You can run it with only the AAA batteries but you probably need a BMS board to protect the cells from being over discharged but you need to find out how much capacity the batteries have.
Honestly for me Ive been using li ion batteries for my projects, you can even get them for free from old laptop batteries. You've probably seen how they salvage them from other UA-cam videos.

@@Alamini96 the module shown in the video won't work with the lights you have. Because 8.6A will be too high for it and its going to shut off. Unless you try using it at a lower voltage (which means the brightness won't be as strong) and get lower amperage.

Can you connect 3x 18650 in series to give you the 12v and quite abit of mah? What do you have to keep in mind if this is possible?

    • @TaylorSoloaiJR
      @TaylorSoloaiJR  3 роки тому

3 18650s in series will give you 12.6V which is okay but it might shorten the lifespan of the LED strip but the good thing about the buck boost converter is if you set the voltage to 12V it will stay there OR you can just charge them only up to 12V, just don't forget to use a Battery Management System (BMS) board to protect the batteries from over discharging.
So you won't be increasing any mAh from connecting them in series but if you need to increase that then you need 3 extra 18650s. Three pairs of 18650s in series (2P 3S battery pack).
      I hope that makes sense

@@TaylorSoloaiJR , this helped alot thank you! On Average whats the amp requirement for LED to be on full power?
If I know this value (im sure each brand differs) can I just add them up with the amount needed for the task and ensure my battery can handle discharge rate on top of using a Battery monitor circuit?

I'm not really sure because their are different LED sizes so you would have to do this on your own, just follow the diagram in the video and you should be fine. That's if you already have a multimeter.

It's late sorry, but answer is no, WS2812 take 5V, although the method is the same.

Hey, do you think that with such a regulator and multiple batteries in parallel it would be possible to power up a 5m 2812b Led strip at full power without burning everything ? (18w/m)
    Thanks !

You need to get one with a heatsink already attached, the one in the video will eventually shut down if it's over heated from the heavy load

The higher the amperage the faster it uses the battery capacity, use a 5V led strip instead
