- This video features the Goose Lake Railway based in Oregon but mostly runs through California. They are owned by Lake County and service industries in Lakeview Oregon.
Once a week they run from Lakeview to Alturas California where they interchange with the Union Pacific which runs out of Klamath Falls. This is about an average sized train for their weekly run. Recently they acquired their own motive power in the form of the two GP15's being used here. They had been leasing locomotives previously.
Around the time frame of this video they are running this on Saturday's and Sunday's. Saturday they run from Lakeview to Alturas and on Sunday's they run back to Lakeview.
These scenes were filmed with the professional DJI Inspire 2 drone and the DJI Osmo Action.

As a young brakeman working out of Klamath Falls in 1976, I was called to work a 7-day vacancy on the SP's Lakeview Local in Alturas. We made two trips to Lakeview that week while the rest of the time was spent between Likely and Canby at various mills. Back then, SP Alturas local freight power were a pair of SD-9s and an old cupola caboose. Thank you for the memories
Interesting short line-great drone pilotage.
Very seldom documented which is why I went out there to get them.
I really like your videos. Your very good with the drone, you get amazing views and the music you set to your videos is perfect.
Thanks a lot! I do a lot to make it the best experience.
Who is the artist and title?
Repeating myself from my comment on the Modoc Line, I've worked all over in the woods around Lakeview too, and it's an amazing little town full of hardworking, independent, zero-bullshit people. Oh my gosh, I miss eastern Oregon so much! Thanks again for your videos, Dan!
Great video, Dan! You had no problem keeping ahead of the train to find locations to watch it pass from the air or on the ground. Thank you for documenting this train and for sharing it with us!
Thanks Thomas! This one was on the list for a while. Glad to check it off.
Great trains, great landscapes, that all filmed great! Would have deserved much more views. Looking forward to the next video. Greetings from Germany.
Thanks very much! I've got a lot of things in the works right now.
Lived in Alturas 20 years, chased many trains, was there for the last 6 months of thru trains on the Modoc Line...SP/UP. Now I chase CORP in Siskiyou Co.
Very cool you got to see that when they were still running thru trains! The next video I'm working on is a chase of the CORP over Siskiyou Pass.
@@TheRailfanDan if I had known what was coming I would have chased more...
@@TheRailfanDan look forward to it....
I worked the Modoc Line in 1976 and 1977 Klamath Falls to Wendel. Wonderful memories of operating in dark territory using train orders.
Thank you. Very nice video.
Excellent footage, Dan. While following along on Google Earth, there was the train just south of Surprise Station.
Thanks! I think I've seen that on there too.
Great video, Dan!
Another great video. Was this area affected this winter with heavy snow, thusly, Goose Lake might have water.?
I believe there was more snow out there than normal this season so that's a good question!
I really like the way you compose the scenes with your drone. I've been a hobbyist photographer for 60 years and notice good composition. This is an interesting semi-arid area I once studied for a model railroad, called the Silverlake. I've flown over this area a few times but you can't really see the details of the topography from seven miles up. Does Goose Lake ever have water in it?
Thanks! Yeah it is a bit rugged out there. I don't know that the lake does ever have water in it. If memory serves then all the photos I've ever seen it was dry.
This line is embargoed which means the maximum track speed is 10 MPH
I imagine it's just excepted track like so many other shortlines which is 10mph.
Nice work Dan.
I'm wondering if the grain will be sprouting before it gets delivered at that track speed.
You would need water to get it to sprout
Haha
Thanks for posting. Great footage. Is this area what we would call semi-arid? Yet there seems to be plenty of water in the river. Is Goose lake a normally dry lake?
I think you could say semi-arid, yes. I do believe the lake is usually dry.
@@TheRailfanDan Thanks Dan, I enjoyed that video. Changing from drone footage to trackside footage.
Cheers Ken.
Baby tunnel motors on the Lakeview! What time do they typically go on duty, and do they run on particular days during the week? Also, are they using GOOS as their reporting mark now? A lot has changed since I lived in Lakeview.
I believe on duty is 5am or something early and Saturdays they go to Alturas from Lakeview. Sunday they head back to Lakeview and I believe on duty time is the same.
@@TheRailfanDan thanks - Saturday/Sunday operations would be worth a trip down to shoot.
That's a full-grown GP15, not a tunnel motor. GP15s were not intended for tunnels, just EMD's failed attempt to replace GP9s.
@@Greatdome99 Lots of people jokingly call them baby tunnels including myself sometimes. We know they were made for light duty.
15 mph? Assume dictated by track conditions.
That's what I thought, too.
Yeah definitely due to track condition. I believe all 10mph but I think I also witnessed some 5mph slow orders out there.
slower than molasses? ;-)
A barge on the river might be faster.
Yeah no kidding! I was definitely tired of the slow chase by the end. It was about a 6 or 7 hours from Lakeview to Alturas.
