  • Nondestructive internal 5-year sprinkler inspection. YES - This is a thing and it is possible to do your internal inspections without tearing apart the piping.
NFPA 25 (2011) 14.2.1.1 allows for alternative nondestructive examination methods.
NFPA 25 requires that 50% of sprinkler systems are internally inspected every 5-years.
This specific method of nondestructive testing utilizing ultrasound technology to check for pipe wall thickness, blockage, presence of water (for dry pipe/preaction), presence of air (for wet) is faster, less expensive, and data-driven to provide consistency across all systems.
There are other methods such as x-ray and remote video and both have pros and cons. I have used remote video inspections for spot checks, but this method specifically provides a standardized data-driven approach that allows for HFMs a better method for capital asset management. Find issues early and prepare for section replacement before the pipe fails.

I was extremely excited until I called and was told the equipment was not for sale. Only feasible to use on large projects because of the cost. Looks like we will continue to do it the old-fashioned way until someone makes equipment available for purchase at a reasonable cost. Probably when their patent runs out.

We use a scope , We pull a head in certain areas of the system and inspect it that way.

I'm curious as to what make and model of device you are using that also detects the water flow as well as obstructions. The devices I'm finding are only detecting pipe thickness. Are you willing to discuss?

Who can use this technology? Can a fire sprinkler company purchase this equipment and incorporate it into their 5 year testing procedures?

Hey Chris, Sonic Inspection does not do the checks. That is for the fire contractor. There are two parts to a 5-Year Assessment: Check vales and the piping.
We non-invasively assess the pipe for integral compromise like corrosion, wall-thinning, sludge, slime, Tubercles, scaling, and trapped air or water in a wet or dry system. Similar technology has been used for many decades in the oil and gas, aircraft (Boeing, US Forces, and more), and more.
Sonic Inspeciton checks integrity of the pipe for the 5-Year assessment on the internal piping per NFPA 25 14.2.1.

That didn’t show you anything but a bunch of lines. Break that sucker apart and do an actual internal. That computer crap isn’t gonna show you what your eye will be able to clearly see.

Sean, to the untrained eye it looks like a bunch of lines. Similar to a radiography or ultrasonic technician in a hospital, it takes training and analytics to reveal what is being seen. Our technology is moving the fire industry into the 21st century from antiquated techniques that provide very little data and much risk. Ultrasound has been used since 1956 and has many applications from medical, oil lines, planes, rockets, ships and more. Now, it has made advancements into Fire Protection (since 2004) with wide acceptance/permission from NFPA 25 Testing, Inspection, and Maintenance on Water Based Systems.
I hope you find this helpful.
