  • To celebrate the upcoming release of Persona 3 Reload in February I wanted to take a look at some of my favorite characters from Persona 3, with today's video diving into the Psychology of Yukari Takeba. Yukari is one of the very first members of SEES that the protagonist meets in the beginning of Persona 3 and so we will be taking a look at how she is able to cope with the grief of loss throughout the course of the game and how the events of 'The Answer' effect her character.

In regards to the Answer, I've got to say... thank you.
The way Yukari feels in the Answer is what made her my favourite character in this series, the way she feels I think is a more genuine feeling of grief than this series has ever produced prior or since. These guys didn't just lose someone they loved, they spent an entire month having forgotten everything they had fought for with him and they had no idea the next time they'd see him, would be the last time they'd ever see him again. I've met many people who've lost someone they cared about in harsh and unexpected ways and the majority of the time what they're likely to feel is cheated, so it makes total sense that anyone experiencing that would want to latch onto any chance at undoing that pain.

@@ThoughtBubbleYT Bless you Jon, I had a feeling you might love it as it's honestly the most genuine depiction of grief and loss in this series. Massive props for playing both sides of Portable on top of FES to get the full picture. Unfortunately at the moment P3F seems to be the target of disproportionate disdain from P3 fans, seemingly due to P3R opting to omit the Answer but I do hope they pay honour to the story in some respect because there is so much there worth preserving.

One thing that goes over a lot of people's head is what triggers Yukari's outburst during the 3rd act of The Answer. She finally decides to opens up about her feelings and stop using avoidance (pretty much the same as Aigis since they're each other's foils in The Answer) but instead of any sort of sympathy/empathy, she essentially receives a "you're weak and a coward who can't face themselves" from Akihiko.
How else did you expect her to react after hearing that? Of course Yukari was not gonna take it well AT ALL and everything that followed was gonna be met with aggression from her.
We all know Akihiko isn't the best articulating his words in a tactful manner but the shot was already fired by that point.
Everyone that criticizes Yukari's outburst seems to completely write off Akihiko's words and it shows.

Yukari used to be my least favorite character, but in the past years, I've grown to appreciate her more. Recently tho, I think I sympathize more with her story....
One of my younger siblings ended his life about two weeks ago. It was sudden, unexpected, and I didn't know how to cope. It got so bad that I dissociated from my body, losing my sense of time, appetite, and disconnecting from people. Thankfully, I'm recovering slowly, but I won't lie that I sometimes experience those waves that want to bring me down. Grief isn't straightforward once you're experiencing it. You feel anger, disbelief, guilt, pain, and you just want it all to disappear. Hearing this video and remembering Yukari's story almost made me cry. Had a been in her place, had I been given the opportunity to go back and stop my brother from stepping in front of that train, I would have taken it.
Thank you making this video. It helps reassure me in a positive way. I just needed to hear that my grief is normal and that there is a way to get through it.

The thing I love about Yukari is the same reason why I love Adachi in Persona 4. Both of them feel like real life people that Atlus took off the streets and threw them in the world of Persona. Yes they are in a world where supernatural things can happen but the mental struggles that they go through feels so real and the sheer humanization of how they lash out at the things that torment them just to keep themselves from breaking down under pressure strikes me in my core.
I can see the Yukari in my Mom, how she almost shut herself away from people and became so jaded for while after witnessing my father's tragic and brutal passing while at the same time I can see the Adachi in me when I was younger looking at my Mom and Dad then looking at the world, seeing it in this black and white viewpoint. It makes me so glad I got into this series and Persona conceptually has become my perfect piece of media.

This video has definitely changed my whole view on Yukari. I went from not caring too much about her, to absolutely loving her. The struggles of feeling isolated and not resonating with others was something that I personally have gone through. Feeling like no one takes you seriously, and being teased by exaggeration of connection (calling people “friends” just because I just associate with them) is such a terrible feeling. Because of this, I never really had a friend until my senior year of high school.
Nowadays though, I’ve definitely gotten better at recognizing who’s a friend or not. I’ve also finally started talking to people, and letting loose.

I am.. Far, too familiar with grieving. Growing up in and out of the hospital, being told I likely wouldn't live to 20, I watched friends with the same issues as me dying at a very young age. That was, so incredibly hardand left a major impact on me as a person. Many people in my graduating class passed away before graduation. Both my parents were gone before I was 21. Been to more funerals than I wantto even consider counting.. I became, don't want to say numb, to that feeling, but, I don't know how else to express it. Kind of, an "It is what it is" I say my goodbyes, and keep them in my memories.
Now, while I'm not a big fan of Yukari as a whole I feel for her, and can understand why she is the way she is. I'm excited to play through Reload to see if how I feel about her character changes at all. With almost an additional 15 years of life experience and dealing with more grief in that time, I would expect so..
...Yukari has 10/10 sense of style though. Her outfits are my favorite in the game. If I could pull those clothes off, I would have rocked it when I was younger.

It's no secret that Yukari is a favourite of mine, but she encapsulates something I love about P3's entire party: they weren't afraid to make them very flawed from the get go. While I like the casts of P4 and 5, I feel most of them were designed to be likable from the outset, possibly for marketing purposes, or because first impressions matter a lot more these days. P3's party members aren't entirely likable on first impression, and they're not MEANT to be. It makes their growth hit so much harder.
Also, I like that the game isn't afraid to have these characters "act out" when they're stressed or upset, and in a believable way.
8:00 "The term is 'complicated grief'. But it's simple, isn't it?" - A not-so-great psychologist character from Silent Hill Shattered Memories.
I love how The Answer is just a giant metaphor for grief, especially, like you mentioned, the fact that time his literally stopped and SEES is literally unable to move on.
14:07 Leading to one of my favourite Junpei lines: "I'm more afraid of things I CAN see. Like bats. And KNIVES."
19:03 I like this line from Yukari here. Just as Ann tells Makoto in P5, "real scum wouldn't call themselves that". Yukari saying this shows she acknowledges that she just said something she regrets in the heat of the moment, rather than actually wishing cruelty on others.
I've always loved The Answer's take on Yukari's grief process. Most fictional characters only go through one major bout of "development" before being treated as "cured" of all their issues for the rest of their lives, but in reality people go up and down, and Yukari "regressing" here is sadly very real, and more people need to understand that.
Thanks for yet another amazing analysis video!

I feel like this is somewhat of a safe space for me to talk about how much I adore this character, and how much she resonates with myself and my struggles. I first played P3P in 2019, and although I really liked the game and its characters it didn't directly speak too much to me, and most of the events of the game were forgotten. It was only when in 2021 I heard of the FES edition, and promptly picked it up and starting playing it, with a better understanding of the english language (as it is not my native tongue). I think now is a good time to say that the pandemic hit my family pretty hard. My father was an emergency room doctor at the peak of covid contaminations, and thus, he was heavily infected inevitably. He would then succumb to the disease, changing the course of me and my family's lives forever. He was pretty much the pillar holding everyone apart. This all happened in September 2020. As I was going through FES to help me distract myself from many of the issues in my life at that moment, I specifically remember feeling quite shocked as to how much Yukari's backstory and trauma resonated with mine, to the point of tears whenever she mentioned her deceased father or shaky relationship with her mother, something I also struggled with for pretty similar reasons. Her ultimate awakening brought me to the point of putting down the game for a good while to sob like a baby. The way she was written felt waaaaay too real, and not only because I deeply empathize with her, but I was actually surprised as to how organic and human she acts during both The Journey and The Answer, to me morese than any other character in this franchise. The cherry on top of it was when I was going through some files and backups on my phone until I came across an untitled mp3 file deep on the downloads folder. To my shock, it was a voice message of my father that he had sent to me during a long shift at the hospital, just generally saying he was proud of having me as his son after I got some decent grades at school. I dont think I have to tell how haunted I was about these similarities lol
TL;DR: I love Yukari not only because she is one of the most human characters I've seen in fiction, but also due to very particular similarities in how life treated us. She (and P3 as a whole) reminded me of the value of the gift of life.

  • @Daniel_Coffman

Essentially, I can sum up Yukari's reversion in The Answer; alongside, for that matter, the characters in Persona 4 Arena facing illusions of their friends throwing their Shadows' insecurities back in their face after they'd made an effort to improve from that already; in this way: Character development and progress, unlike what everyone wants it to be, is not a simple straight line in real life, at all.
No matter how much we want to never go back to the way we were that we improved ourselves from, most of the time, that part of us that we used to be will never go away in reality. We will always have to face the memories of the mistakes we made regardless of whether or not we learned from them, and, as they say, "Old habits die hard," so we can well fall back into routines that we used to have that were not healthy for us in times of extreme pressure and stress. Learning from our mistakes and our regrets does, at the least, make it easier to say, "I know I was a fool back then and I effed up, but I'd already learned from that crap. Moving on."
But, when we hadn't really learned to step away from our old ways of dealing with something, what is stopping us from reverting back to our old ways when we are under immense stress, like the loss of someone who is extremely important to your life? It takes our own willpower to remember and act upon what we had learned, but when we are stressed and not thinking properly, it is difficult to possess that kind of willpower in the moment. Not impossible, perhaps, but not easy by any means, no matter how much we've improved.

i love yukari so much and i always will. her story was the one that hit me the most along with aigis's story, hence me loving both of them. as for people not liking yukari in the answer, i think i can add onto it as i wasn't satisfied with how the answer treated yukari.
during the time the answer came out, most of the fans liked aigis more than yukari. this high preference for aigis weighed heavily against yukari and people needing to understand her side of the story (this fan preference for aigis is what led to atlus changing the "pushed romance" from yukari to aigis in future games and the movies). there was also the fact that there really wasnt a middle ground in sees before the part when aigis had to fight SEES (the closest was junpei and koromaru, but they were more so on the side of not going back to 2009). so this meant that yukari was the only one willing to go back to 2009 and risk her life to try to save the protagonist, and mitsuru just following her to be a good friend to yukari. i feel like if the choice of either going back to 2009 or continuing to go to april 1st, yukari wouldnt be so hated in the answer.
me personally, i understand and sympathise with yukari in the answer, but i also understand the other side of the argument. the answer wasn't the best narratively, and i feel like if they were to tweak the answer a bit, people will like yukari a bit more and even understand her more

I'll give you a point on that, since in the movies they literally threw out the entire relationship between Yukari and Makoto when Aigis came in because of her popularity, Luckily the creators and developers do not think like that, since in every spin off or adaptation of Persona 3 that they release, it is seen that their relationship has not changed and remains close as in the original, As seen in persona Q, persona dancing 3 or the most notable persona 3 manga, he believed that these are clear examples that the creators and Atlus are not influenced by the fandom and respect the material origin.

Awesome! Yukari really is a huge part of the heart of Persona 3. She is such a consistent presence no matter which version of the game you play and it always feels like she's getting development. One thing I should note about her early relationship with Mitsuru is made a lot clearer in the dub where it seems the reason Yukari is mistrustful towards Mitsuru isn't because of her family name but rather that Mitsuru is depicted as a VERY curt character who doesn't mince words and keeps herself at something of a distance from her underclassman. Tara Platt's depiction of Mitsuru is very polite and warm hearted and naturally a lot of people adore her for that but I think it also somewhat complicates how she is seen by Yukari. In the JP dialogue Mitsuru is repeatedly depicted as bit of an Ice Queen but simultaneously just a girl who deals with the same societal pressures most do.

Yukari is without a doubt the most realistic character in Persona 3, very underrated from the beginning simply because of her personality, When truly she along with Aigis are the ones who carry the message of the game at its maximum expression, I would have liked her Aigis relationship to have been developed a little more, since they went from not getting along to also having something unique in common, their important bond with Makoto, although seeing later in the story how she is doing, It seems that now he is not as alone as before, having his friends as his support and Mitsuru and Aigis as his most important ties, trying to fulfill the promise he made.

As a relatively new fan to Persona 3 specifically, I do not get people who say Yukari is a bad character. She is the most real out of the entire cast and The Answer is like the cherry on top and, imho, her character would feel incomplete without it. It’s a true shame for a character to receive a literal decade of constant hate for responding to grief in a way that’s not poetic or beautiful and easy to digest.
In a lot of ways P3 is about grief as a fundamental and integral element of the human experience. And sometimes the way people process grief can be real ugly or harmful.
Atlus doesn’t really take risks like that anymore. Especially for female characters who are often held to a different standard and receive a lot more criticism than male characters who do similar things. Like, a male characters that’s beloved for being a unhinged lunatic and killing innocent people for the sake of his own revenge plot, but a teenage girl being ridiculed and despised by those same fans for responding to the death of a loved one like a lot of actual teenagers would react.

To this day, Yukari has always been my favorite of SEES. She is the sole girl I romanced in Reload, and in both The Journey and in Reload itself, she never left my party.
She is easily the most human character of the lot. Of course she's imperfect and flawed. EVERYONE IS. But I feel that she's hated because she's "too realistic" to others, because she's not another generic love interest.
Her flaws and her strengths are what make her so appealing to me.
Also helps that in the dubs, we have Michelle Ruff and Heather Gonzales absolutely understanding the assignment and, true to the archer she is, they hit the bullseye in their performances.

Can I ask the comments something? I haven't played the Answer, but what are the conditions for them going back in time? Like are they explicitly told they would not have any memories of the current time they are in or are the forced to go back to one moment in particular?
I always thought it was weird for so many people to hate on Yukari for wanting to do essentially what we saw the Avengers do in Endgame. They risked losing the stable future they managed to build up for getting everyone they lost back. This seems similar but on a much smaller scale.
If they have no conditions then I am super surprised that the community hates her as much as they do. The power of Hindsight could do so much, even just knowing that defeating all of the Arcana shadows will release Nyx, will radically diverge how they act. I am also surprised that everyone in the group wouldn't be more divided if this was the case. Without it, it would make it seem like the writer is trying to really hammer home the theme of letting go - but ignoring the fact that they did actually give the characters a great tool to resolve an issue.
