The Psychology of Kasumi Yoshizawa (Persona 5 Royal)

  • Kasumi Yoshizawa is a fascinating character from Persona 5 Royal that is hiding a lot more than it first seems from Joker, the Phantom Thieves, and even herself. This video is FULL of spoilers for Persona 5 Royal so I highly recommend that once you have completed the game that you come back and give this video a watch and stop reading the description right NOW... Because we're not talking about Kasumi in this video, instead we are talking about her younger sister Sumire Yoshizawa. I go in-depth about how the game illustrates that Sumire has had to endure a Major Depressive Disorder as well as several other mental health issues throughout the course of the game. Not only will I react, analyze, and review these struggles from the lense of a clinical mental health counseling student, but I will also look at how she was able to move past this throughout the course of the story and the issues Dr. Maruki caused for her.
I do want to note that all counselors will come at situations from different theoretical orientations, backgrounds, and belief systems. My opinions correlate with my own education and professional experience up to this point in my education as a Master's level counseling student.

ThoughtBubble yeah. I absolutely adored Sumire’s arc (story and confidant), and she is one of my favorite Persona characters as a result (top 3 for sure). Sure- I admit she does somewhat have a lack of screen time like Haru, but I don’t think that really matters since Sumire’s arc is so good. Not to say Haru’s arc wasn’t good, but it can’t compare to Sumire’s.

@@Mojo1356 I actually am going to have to make an extreme disagreement regarding her screen time. I believe that the fact that she alone was the one who one-shot 3 or 4 shadows at the opening scene at Nijiima's Palace was already a bit over the top and extremely bold regarding foreshadowing. Although she had little correlation with the pre-Yaldabaoth/Maruki story, I think that was sensible on Atlus. For crying out loud, she (basically) had her own arc that lasted an entire semester and if she was involved with the rest of the year, it would be waaaaay over the top and excessive for not only character development AND screen time. Basically, that game was undeniably her game and it will upset if they make it canon. Atlus' attempt to make more story was good but very extreme and it shadows the rest of the characters in a way.

Yeah about a third of my way through my second play through I realised just how messed up what Maruki did really was. Basically a teenaged girl suffering from depression told him she thought everyone would be happier if she had died instead of her sister and he AGREED WITH HER. Like... I know he didn’t mean it that way but just... wow.
As a side note: The other thing about Sumire’s quick recovery is that Joker does also have a unique skill as the Trickster. It’s never specifically stated in the game what it is but Akechi passively compares both Joker’s and Maruki’s to his own ability to drive people psychotic while the group is talking to Lavenza. Joker being able to ‘oppose fate’ does spread to other characters he interacts with (seen most blatantly with the fortune teller, Chihaya, as she herself begins doing the same thing to those she reads fortunes for). Joker’s Empowerment (which is what I call it) probably played a hand in her healing.

This is definitely an interesting take that I never thought of! I like the idea of Joker having an innate and empowering effect on the people around him as a special trait of his as a Trickster. Thanks for sharing, that’s super cool! :)

And the worse part of it was that he deliberately re-opened her old mental wound right in front of her just to prove a point to Joker and Akechi.
I personally think the reason he agreed with Sumire is because he too believes in that logic especially with what happened to Rumi. He blames himself for not being there to protect Rumi and her family from the home invasion and believe she deserved to be with a better person than him. This clouded his mind when he used his powers to heal her trauma. Thus, He inadvertently erased himself from her memories and didn't bother to fix it.
It's like "Wait, I didn't want her to forget me, too. On second thought, I think that's for the best."
Thus, to him, if people aren't about what happened to their loved ones and wish to someone else, so be it.

Maruki = Bad Consular. I died. As someone who only took two undergrad psychology classes in college, watching Maruki's session with Sumire literally made my blood boil. Like damn it, Maruki! Your job is to help your work through her issues, not put her under a brainwashing spell. Even though I already knew he'd been scheming the actualization thing for a while and had basically been using Joker in his sessions, the grossness of the Sumire actualization really helped transformed him from someone who I just found delusional to something truly terrifying.

    • @ThoughtBubbleYT
      @ThoughtBubbleYT  4 роки тому +59

Yeah. Exactly! A counselor should never set out to “fix” the people they’re working with because that leaves the VERY high risk of stripping them of their autonomy. A counselor needs to empower their client and help them to discover tools that work for them to tackle their current and future struggles. Maruki’s “the means justify the ends” way of thinking is not only forcing what he thinks will make people happy onto them, but it completely strips them of choice. Which is, as you said, terrifying.

@@ThoughtBubbleYT People are not the individual butterflies with free will that you think they are. They, more often than not, do not know what's best for them and act in irrational ways that go against their own interests that require intervention on the part of parents, the government or in this case, a counseler. Most of the world does not subscribe to this modern and quite frankly American delusion of individualism and freedom which has practically become a cult in its own right, ignoring human nature in order to fulfill this delusional worldview when in reality most humans are like sheep that need a shepherd to herd them around for their own good.
It might be sad to think about but that is how it is and fictional video games will never change a thing, as fun as they can be. Like instead of just getting a handful of added scenes there could be a Confidant perk/ability you only get if one of the girls is your GF or maybe some of the romances could activate before rank 9, giving them more time to actually feel like your GF. Maybe dating one of the main girls could have an affect on how they receive stat boosts from the jazz club, darts or pool. Or some kind of benefit/incentive could have been added to taking them out after Rank 10 so you have a gameplay incentive to do that. I actually think it was kind of a waste of potential that the game doesn’t let you date Sumire until January. Imagine the conflict if you had initiated a romance with her before her secret was revealed

Once again, you did an amazing job! As a psychologist myself, I'd like to add my 2 cents.
I don't think that Sumire has surpassed her depression, it might seem like she has from a narrative perspective, but in reality, depression is often something that people struggle with for the vast majority of their lifetime. Sumire might have found new inspiration and inner strenght to "go on" but having depression makes you very vulnerable to a lot of different stimulus that can trigger harmful thoughts and emotional distress.
Which is something we see "Kasumi" constantly struggle with as she constantly gets stressed over with gymnastics, then she tries to focus on cooking and that fails in her eyes as well, then she tries to make something nice for her father which only adds up to the poor confidence sumire has expressed over all the confidant ranks.
I strongly agree that Joker and thus "We" as the players, play an important support net for Sumire as she keeps trusting us with some things that are very special to her and it's very clear that Joker's approval has a very strong weight on Sumire's perspective of things and her own actions. For example, when she feeds you and joker takes a moment to answer on how "good" the food was, she immediately apologizes and says that she'll do better next time. Our opinion is something she values so much because joker is one of the few persons she has met after accepting the "Kasumi persona" and, being in such a vulnerable state as she is, it's crucial for her to build stable relationships with people that ACCEPT her for the new "Person" she is, even though Sumire's quirky personality might come out here and there, we accept her as a whole and that's what she values the most. Which in on itself is a really big challenge for Sumire who deals with depression and survivor's guilt, but Kasumi's personality pushes her to be social and smile all the time, because "That's just how Sis used to be" and "this is the newfound person I have to be so I don't feel like a total failure". Clearly seen at around 9:50
All in all, she's a great character, fitting for such a complex subject that only such a deep and emotive game such as persona could bring. Great video! I'll be awaiting the next one!

@Kira Kurusu I don't think she's there yet. The narrative of the game pushes things around for her to appear "ready" but in reality if she were to put herself through that ordeal it would be a very dependant relationship.
Try to look at it from her point of view: You often feel down about yourself, you think something is wrong with you all the time, you push yourself to your limits all the time and you have to act according to a mannerism that isn't quite yourself. Then, despite all your efforts, everything keeps going down the drain no matter how hard you try and you can only blame yourself.
Then comes along Joker, who treats you nicely, saves you from creppy guys in shibuya and helps in situations where you needed someone the most. Joker helps you through some of your most intricate and personal problems, well of course you would fall in love with such a wonderful Chad.
But it's unhealthy, because sumire is falling in love with what joker represents for her (help, support, an escape to her issues and a constant form of acceptance) instead of falling in love with joker PLUS what he brings to the table. Add mental issues to the mix and you got a recipe for a constantly depressing relationship in which she will be needy, she will demand jokers attention and the moment something takes that away from her, she'll be either a total drama queen about it or sink into depression because the one thing she clings to, has "abandoned her" in her eyes.
The game obviously makes a hard push so you can only focus on Sumire's role and life events rather than them actually talking and joker telling her about himself but still, I don't think she's ready, you gotta heal your own soul, heart and mind before you share those to someone else you know?

    • @ThoughtBubbleYT
      @ThoughtBubbleYT  4 роки тому +10

@Kira Kurusu Personally, while the nature of the relationship and the situation does definitely lend itself to that possibility and risk, I don't see this in their relationship. Not only is she more than okay with him going back home having just a very casual "see you later" kind of line at the train station, but she does not define herself by their relationship, she has her own dreams and aspirations that are well removed from Joker, and she outwardly expresses what she wants from the relationship she doesn't just do whatever Joker says like it's law (from the very few romantic interactions that we see).
While she does care about his support and opinion, and she wants to support him back, again it doesn't seem as though she completely defines herself by this. And so while it very well could have been too soon and had the potential to be a toxic situation, this doesn't seem to be the case because she doesn't define herself by her relationship with Joker. We can really see this in their Valentine's day interaction when he essentially asks if she wants to come with him and she guiltlessly says no, and that she'd rather that she keep working towards her own goals and she'll make sure he hears about her wherever he is. This likely wouldn't happen in a codependent relationship as it's likely that if Joker were the enabler she would try to bend over backwards to do what he wanted potentially to the detriment of herself and her dreams. So whether it would be realistic in her situation or not in the real world is iffy but in terms of the way the game was written I personally don't see any issues. That's kind of a parred down version, but I hope that answers your question from my perspective! :)

The third semester also worked as an excellent point about personal issues not being resolved that easily. All of the Phantom Thieves fell victim to Maruki's actualization, even if you maxed all confidant ranks which see each individual through their personal struggles. Deep down, they still yearned that which they lost, despite having worked through that loss. The same can be said about Sumire, I suppose.

Considering she tries to kill you during the 3rd semester I would say if she’s is lashing out that much her depression is probably pretty bad (I’m not a professional so I do not know if that is bad), and I think her confidant you see her start to cope in a healthy way, but I thinks she’s going to need to start seeing a non-Maruki counselor to actually fully cope with her sister’s death.

Finding out about Sumire's backstory in the 3rd semester, I could relate with her almost 1 to 1, with the exception of me being the older brother.
My entire life, I'm being outshined in every single aspect of life by my younger brother. Academic success, social life, mental stability, being a lot more outgoing, generally being liked a lot by the entire family to the point of almost everyone thinking he can do no wrong (except for my dad lately when he was able to finally see that my brother loves using others to do the things he has to do, after me trying to get that through to him for the last... 10 years or so) and generally being loved by basically everyone.
The only thing I'm objectively better at than him is being a musician, which *also* doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things, since I chose an instrument to pursue in my childhood you can't make a living with (euphonium), and he chose one you *can* do that with (French Horn). So the joke is on me once again.
I'm also a lot better at reading than him, but he's very dyslexic, so I'm not going to take that as a win over him either since he didn't choose to be.
So what's left for me, is being an unsuccessful, colourblind youngster with ADHD, who has been bullied relentlessly during primary school, has basically no social life, sucks at making connections and generally has no real goal in life, along with being talented at something I honestly cannot really do anything with because of some physical limitations as well.
So yeah, her backstory really hit hard for me.

Joker was only a part of it, I really do like her and Joker's relationship though, it's really admirable but Joker was definitely of use to her also.

I wonder if the first appearance of Cendillon under the pre-actualization of maruki is the representation of how kasumi perceived sumire , and then the true awakening of Cendrillon after her arcana is restored is now how sumire perceived kasumi - which is the same, just unbeknownst to each other up until that point

  • @wJermell0
    @wJermell0 4 роки тому +13

Now that I think about it, Atlus may have intended Maruki's therapy session with Sumire to be the trainwreck that it was. I mean this would have been even earlier than his sessions with the phantom thieves when he was clearly still new. And Sumire is NOT a case you'd give to some green new counselor fresh out of the classroom. Especially when he's got a cop-out in the form of memory wipes from an eldritch god. I initially recoiled wondering why he thought this was a good idea but I get it now. It really speaks to the character writing that although this is a horrific decision, I really think it'd be out of character for Maruki to do anything else.
Trying to help someone with depression through the death of a loved one they felt responsible for is a very difficult task and would take a lot of time. Something that someone like Maruki, with his aversion to negative emotions, simply wouldn't be equipped to help anyone deal with, so of course he'd use Azathoth to "fix" this overnight and genuinely believe that he helped her in a way no one else could. Well I went off on this big tangent about Maruki on the Sumire video but that's just because you covered her so well in this vid!

    • @ThoughtBubbleYT
      @ThoughtBubbleYT  4 роки тому +4

I think you're 100% right, she is definitely a difficult case for a new counselor and if he didn't feel adequately equipped to help her then he ethically should have referred her out to someone who may be more helpful, but I suppose if he was ethical we wouldn't have a plot! lol
I'm planning on making a whole video about this session though! I actually have another series where I'm going through all of Maruki's counseling sessions from the perspective of a counseling student so if you like Maruki stuff that might interest you! This is had to be the most interesting video about Kasumi ever. Except the men horny for her. It really goes deep in what really Sumire had gone through as a character. Though I've seen the plot but looking at this detail about her psyche is just fascinating. The fact that her social link has some sort of memory leak even post-actualization you still see bits and pieces of Kasumi and Sumire just smoshed together. Still Dr. Snacks (cuz I like Maruki for the snacks.) had his clinging desire of to help people, his research to prove the people who "rejected" him and losing the love of his life pushed him so far and ended up being a form twisted kindness.
I do hope you make character case study in other anime cuz its very fascinating to see the characters in another point of view.

I found Maruki's actions in the game deeply disturbing, so I'll freely admit to enjoying the "bad counselor" bubbles. While I can sympathize with his motives, forcing other people to accept a solution just because it worked for him (Lovecraftian mind powers notwithstanding) felt so, so wrong.
Sumire truly got the worst of all worlds when it came to that little "counseling" session. I didn't fully comprehend how badly served she'd been before I'd started writing a 50k word story imagining the events of the early game where it simply didn't happen. While the player/protagonist can certainly provide the beginnings of a necessary support network, you can't just "fix" depression, and even my own little coping mechanism/thought sharing exercise ended up giving her a Palace of her own to overcome.
Thankfully, I make no claims to being even an incompetent counselor, let alone a clinical psychologist.

I think Sumari saying that she was glad she met Dr. Maruki isn’t her wanting to go through that again or recommending that anyone should do the same. For many people, they do have a sense of gladness they suffered in some way in order to become as strong as they are to help others suffering. It’s the kind of mindset where those that have suffered are thankful they had suffered in order to become a better person. This same mindset is taught in Persona 5 that suffering is essential in order to become stronger. To take away suffering would be to make the person weaker than they were. Because Sumari had suffered from losing her sister, being brainwashed and being manipulated by someone she thought she trusted, she learned the importance of enduring pain and that even those that try to take away her pain with the best of intentions may led to a destructive path. On top of that, she had gained the best support system, because of Dr. Maruki.

On the question of if she was struggling with major depression, ya that sounds like major depression, I'd hesitate to diagnose, because I'm not even a student of psychology, but as somebody diagnosed with major depression, it sounds like your diagnosis is spot on because those were a lot of the elements that I was dealing with when I received my diagnosis.
I don't think she "overcame" it though, major depression isn't exactly something that I think ends, it fundamentally changes how you think. She's certainly gotten over this particular episode and developed coping skills, but I think it would always make her vulnerable to depressive triggers which can result in falling back to low points and points of utter numbness. I was never taught to expect my depression to be cured, instead "remission" and the like was a word I got a lot.
It seems like she learned to manage it and got tools to bring herself out of low states when they occurred, but I don't think she overcame it, because I think overcoming major depression is a realistic expectation.

The interesting thing about Maruki's "pre-actualization" of Sumire, which Sumire herself acknowledges after breaking out of it, is that it did keep her in a relatively stable state for a good long time, which contributed in a weird way to her being able to recover naturally once the cognition change was broken. So while it would have likely been much, much better for her to have been sent to a councilor who... well, was better at counseling and didn't have a completely counterproductive mindset for the job (and magic powers to back up said counterproductive mindset), it ended up being the second case of the broken clock being right twice a day (the first being Maruki's old girlfriend, who was literally catatonic). It didn't fix her, but it helped combat the symptoms, like... medication given to a patient stricken with an incurable disease. When she finally emerged and accepted who she was, it wasn't "fresh" anymore. It was returned to a sense of mental immediacy temporarily when Maruki first showed her that memory, but after she was returned to reality, her mind would eventually adjust and it would return to being a memory separated from the present by about a year's worth of other memories. The time she spent as "Kasumi" Yoshizawa didn't vanish either and was, in some way, a part of her. None of this likely erased her depression completely, and we're given only a very short span of time to see what this new Sumire Yoshizawa's mindset must be like (during most of it, she was also a bit preoccupied with saving the world), so I wouldn't call this a true "recovery." Just the first step: acceptance. The strength of heart needed to face oneself made manifest, to borrow that old Persona 4 phrasing.

In this video, you mention her depression in the first half, which was something I'm surprised I saw quite a few people dismiss other times. I'm wondering if you caught the part where one of the Phantom Thieves, I don't recall which, says something along the lines of she "fought alongside us despite disagreeing with our methods." This was something said long after she became Sumire again. However, she first expressed this as Kasumi to Joker and Akechi, so there's no way this would have been possible unless she still felt that way as Sumire, which would show that many of her opinions were still her own. My understanding of the "Kasumi" we interacted with was really just Sumire tackling life in the way her sister would.

As if I don't know that better than anyone." Her feelings of self-loathing and inadequacy are still very much present beneath the surface of Maruki's cognitive manipulation, and during moments of high duress (such as being threatened with the revoking of her scholarship), the mask begins to crack and reveal her true personality lying beneath.

I really thought your description of Maruki is interesting in the sense that he got swept into this notion of "fixing" clients instead of empowering them to be themselves. I also thought that Atlus made him a very ironic character insofar as the fact that he is introduced to us as a counselor but arguably HE was the one who needed the most help. He bottled up a lot of his frustrations and anxiety about Rumi and her mental breakdown bc of the murder of her parents. This was shown pretty well in the final fist fight too when Maruki asked Joker to help him kill off his regrets. Even though I cringed at what he did to Sumire, I can't help but like the character and the way Atlus integrated him into the story

Personally, I think Sumire managed to overcome her depression quite thoroughly, in part because she actually was doing so while under the (what I'm going to call) cognitive overlay.
Because, yeah, there were multiple points where Sumire's issues were shining though, and Joker was there to help her through them.
I agree with her observation that Maruki putting the overlay into effect did have an overall positive effect but I'll note that it's almost entirely a case of allowing someone who may have spiralled into a much darker place some time to develop a sufficient support system and should never have been treated as an end-all-be-all solution.
I do have a lot more thoughts on both Maruki as a counselor and his effect on Sumire (admittedly coming from someone with NO schooling or experience with counseling) but I'll save those for the video addressing their session together.

after rewatching this after almost a year and my new found understanding of sumire, this video is absolutely my favorite sumire analysis i have seen far. i personally have a connection to sumire, something i won't get into, so i had this perception of her as a character. this video after rewatching it after almost a year allowed me to rethink what i thought of her and i love it. seeing her slowly go back to being sumire was really heartfelt and it made me feel warm and fuzzy inside. sumire as a character has a major impact on me and i love her so much. can i also add that the fact that her persona being cendrillon (french cinderella) was genius. when she became kasumi, it can be seen as she had her fairy godmother allow her to go to the ball. it can also be noted that marukis reality for sumire broke on 1/2, kinda like midnight. the battle with the corrupted cendrillon says a lot honestly when she says "i dont want to go back to my life in cinders ever again!" and then we have joker being her prince as she falls for him during the course of the game as we support her during her journey as both kasumi and sumire and during the last 5 ranks of sumires confidant, we now see shes returning to the metaphorical princess she is, this time not as her sister but as herself. her whole character arc is tied with a beautiful ribbon when her persona becomes ella. ella is the true name of cinderella, in some stories, and seeing that her persona is using her true name when she accepted shes sumire is just heartwarming and i love it so much.

Royal was a great adition. The god of control plotline was very grand and epic, but I resonate more that in the end it's an intimate human vs human conflict. Also mad respect for what they did to akechi and kasumi, they recontextualized both of their worst and best traits masterfully as soon as the antagonism shifted to maruki.

Yes, I agree with this and their are times you can tell she carried over her true personality.
Although i feel her truly getting over this would take years of therapy and counseling especially when her friends aren't around as often.
From feeling inadequate to grief and depression, their lot of things going on in Sumire mind I wouldn't even know where to begin the healing.

I agree with everything you said in the video, i do think that sumire haven't fully gotten over her depression, even though she is making steps in becoming a better person thanks to people like joker and the time she was kasumi. If you romance her and take her out to white day she says something like "i dont deserve this love" showing that she still hasn't gotten over her depression fully. Hopefully if we ever see her again her arc will be about fully getting over her depression finally

This is more relevant to the Joker/Maruki video but Dr. Maruki reminds me of therapists I've had who are very green, and don't know how to give therapy, lead the session, or challenge the patient. You're right that some people just know the right things to say. I'm one of them. And it comes from shame and humility over my issues and not being able to able up face to face. Therapy via text is honestly the best therapy I've ever had. I'm pulling for you to become a great psychologist, and I find these videos fascinating.

I loved this discussion of Yoshizawa; she's always been one of my favorites from the game! I really appreciated the discussion of depression symptoms before the onset of Maruki's actualization, as I don't think it gets talked about enough. I've heard discussion of Sumire functionally using Joker as a replacement for Kasumi and desiring to imitate and rely on him in the way she did Kasumi, which could be implied through the social link and her outfit in the Metaverse, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on that as well- it's the only thing that didn't totally satisfy me about her character arc.

This ordeal with Sumire wanting to become a different person entirely is the next step up from Naoto wanting to change her gender.
Both were due to unwarranted insecurities about their self image, mind you at least in Naoto's case there wasn't some ethically challenged doctor telling her to go through with it like there is with Maruki telling Sumire.
And for any who are offended by the comparison I honestly think you have blinders on, it is in no way ethical for a counselor to suggest that you cope with trauma by feeding into your delusions, because what happens if you change your mind? You will just be re-traumatized.

    Another phenomenal video
I loved your counseling analyses but having you actually discuss the core plot is amazing too. What are your thoughts on Maruki's world btw? A world wherein people who suffer can live meaningful and happy lives at the cost of free will. It's upsetting because it seems like an easy choice at the surface, but there are so many complications (on both sides) that are worth considering. Not everyone has the privilege of being able to change their lives and work hard for their dreams. Disease, violence, accidents, etc have robbed a lot of people of their happiness. But a world wherein anyone can achieve anything feels like it would make everything feel... mundane. I'm a fairly mediocre programmer, but I don't think I would be happy if Maruki forced me to become a teacher or something.

    • @ThoughtBubbleYT
      @ThoughtBubbleYT  4 роки тому +3

Thank you so much! And I definitely want to talk about his world in a video at some point, but the short answer is that I don't like his world at all. I mean let's just look at Ryuji. Ryuji had grown so much as a person through the good and the bad moments and he was able to come out the other end as a better person for it but Maruki decided that this didn't fit what he thought Ryuji should want so he "fixed" it. It robs people the opportunity to choose and overcome hardships and difficulty and the opportunity to grow. While there would be definite net positives like the ones you mentioned, I don't think that essentially robbing the world of free will and the opportunities to grow past hardship is worth those sacrifices imo.

@@ThoughtBubbleYT Thanks so much for the detailed response. Your passion and care is something else.
I'm very much the same way. My heart aches at the vast amount of injustice in this world, and sometimes I do think we'd be better off losing our own free will to ensure that people don't suffer, but I think about Ryuji and even my own experiences and through both the good and the bad, those experiences matter to me. Not everyone has the privilege of saying that, but it still applies to a lot of people and it's definitely worth noting.

P5R is at the same time the furthest from a SMT game as can be, but also interestingly treads some similar story aspects
P5R is a story about 3 protagonists, and the OG SMT is also about 3 protagonists deciding the fate of the world
Ren the player character and -demon- persona summoner
    Akechi the chaos hero
    Makuri the order hero
The chaos hero sides with demons and destroys themselves for their goal
The order hero becomes akin to a cult leader and devolved a god complex while pursuing their goal
The player character is the "neutral" party that changes the outcomes of the story

Still from the fairy tale, she wants to be worthy of the prince
Her costume makes her a female version of the Joker in a jacket and red gloves
But the mask has inverted colors: black on the outside and white on the inside compared to him
She is also the only one of the girls to have red hair
I reject the final movie Ren could be accompanied to the station to accompany her or greet her and in the romantic case he receives a kiss and then they leave by bus

I really liked Kasumi when I was playing P5 because she is cute and we look simillair, I just have brown hair, but when I started Maruki's palace and looked into her backstory I started to like her character even more since I see myself in her a bit. I have an older brother, he isn't like Sumire's sister but I see myself as Sumire with how I'm more introverted and my brother is extroverted, and how I'm always trying to be like him. I started getting into persona because of him. I am not exactly like Sumire with trying to take his full on image but I'm always trying to be like him like the way he talks, trying to imitate his voice, what he likes etc., I really enjoyed P5R, especially the 3rd semester and mementos arc, I love this video so much you did an amazing job explaining everything :D

I think the reason he's such a good antagonist is because his motives feel like they're coming from a good place. Who wouldn't like the idea of always being happy? But once we see his methods of achieving this and the effects it has on people it quickly starts feeling like a dystopia pretending to be a utopia. All of the Phantom Thieves had grown so much past their hardships and he literally stole all of their hard work and personal growth because in his opinion that's what they should have wanted. It's kind of disturbing.

It was at the moment Maruki worked his magic on Sumire that he shows why he should not be a counselor. Granted- what he did eventually helped Sumire truly move on in the long run, but Maruki did the complete opposite of what a counselor should do. That said, while I don’t necessarily think this is bad writing on Maruki’s part, at the same time, this is a big ethical NO for a counselor. Regardless, both of them are my favorite characters in Persona 5.

Sumire is by a landslide my favorite character in the game and was years before I ever actually played the game recently, and her arc in the third semester improved her character infinitely for me. I admittedly barely know anything about actual psychology, but she was perfect motivation to take down Maruki and shows the player just how much Maruki's actualization can do to someone's perspective, even without being used to its full potential. Even if the pre-actualization was only targeting Sumire's cognition, it still managed to impact Joker to the point that you only ever hear anyone call her Yoshizawa-san, hiding her true identity from the player until the end. Obviously it's done for writing purposes to make the backstory/trauma hit you as hard as it hits her, but it shows how much Maruki can do without him being ANYWHERE NEAR his full capabilities, especially when taking Adam Kadmon into account. It gives you that "oh crap" moment where you realize what Maruki can do, and even then Maruki is still a stupidly ambiguous character morally, but you know that you can't just give up free will to someone who thinks he knows what will make you happy. Then focusing on her own character arc and not her place in the whole third semester, they managed to make that cutscene probably the SINGLE most depressing scene I've experienced in any game and I love it. Even as an only child who hasn't dealt with loved ones passing away too much, Atlus STILL managed to make one of the most saddening moments in any game I've played with that cutscene. It makes you want to help her if you already liked her character, and even if you didn't like her character at first it makes you feel sympathetic and could potentially counteract your initial thoughts on her.
Again, Sumire's my favorite character so my personal opinions might be a wee bit biased, but she really is THE character of the third semester, even over Maruki. The third semester is her comeback story, her accepting what happened to her sister and realizing she needs to carry the torch left behind by Kasumi, and finding her own person instead of just running away from her trauma. As cool of an antagonist Maruki is and as morally ambiguous as he is, Sumire is effectively THE catalyst for infiltrating Maruki's Palace and changing his heart, since saving her is the main reason Akechi and Joker go back the second time to confront Maruki, and saving her is what truly leads the Thieves to realizing that they need to stop Maruki from changing reality to his will.
tldr Sumire is a great character even from a standard plot writing standpoint also she's freaking adorable look at her

I think she still has a ways to go, recovery isn't a straight shot - but! She has a support system through the phantom thieves and with Futaba going to school (possibly Shujin) at the end of Royal, it's possible that Futaba and Sumire could assist each other and help themselves through helping each other since they understand the extent of what the other went through, as well as hopefully getting continuing external assistance through counseling but...with a different counsellor, lol. I think each of the thieves provide a different and significant source of comfort to Sumire and I'd like to see their friendship grow in the time after canon even if they're not all in Tokyo anymore, some of them will be and at least will only be a phone click away!

As I continued to cosplay I began to love myself more. Still when I cosplay I try to act like the character because it’s fun. Yet, still my little quirks still remain. Much like Sumire I wanted to be someone else. Someone, while fictional, I considered better than me that I could never attain in any capacity. I cosplay characters that I identify with or admire. That is why I cosplay Violet/Sumire. It’s an honor to cosplay such a beautiful and strong character who overcame extreme hardships
