I'm a newbie but having started with a few single malt and then recently tried Famous Grouse, the taste is definitely different. To have it straight, single malt beats blended hands down for me. Thank you for your video. I will give Monkey Shoulder a go. I can always make cocktails out of it so nothing to lose!
My first experience with scotch many years ago was peated and I thought I was going to die. Thought it was terrible stuff. MS is a great gateway into the fruitier Highland/Speyside single malts. Over the years, I've slowly developed an affinity for peated whiskies as well. Thanks for watching!
I love monkey shoulder. I'm not really ever going to be Into several hundred/ thousand plus whiskeys to be honest but kinnevie glenfiddich and balvenie blended for an accessible price point really can't complain
Agree with your sentiment. I've never had Kininvie, but I like the single malts I've tried from Balvenie and Glenfiddich. Monkey Shoulder is an incredibly affordable alternative.
It's okay. If you're going for sub-$25 blended scotch, I prefer Dewars White Label. Red Label is fine and I definitely don't suggest Famous Grouse. Cheers!
With Red Label Johnnie Walker you taste more of the barrel it’s been sitting in than the whiskey itself. Personally I don’t like that woodsy tobacco flavor in my whiskey.
The Monkey Shoulder is a great bargain for those that want to experience a "decent" scotch without having to pay $50.00+ for the bottle. I routinely grab one just to have on hand, saving me from spending quite so much. I still remain faithful to The Glenlivet....was my first and I always go back to it, even though I've had some better - I'm used to it's particular bite and flavor.
@@TheBarleyLads I have had every one up to the 25 year (it was G.O.O.D.). Lately I have been getting the Caribbean Resrve more often than not, since it's a bit cheaper here in TN. (about $38 vs $49 for the 12 year)
Monkey Shoulder represents one of my first experiences with Scotch in general. My wife bought me a bottle for my birthday one year and off I went! Up until that point my experience with whiskey had been limited to Tennessee and bourbon.
My whiskey journey started with Irish (Brice too) and it's still my favorite category but Monkey Shoulder is just a great whiskey to have. The proof holds up in cocktails but with it being a blended malt it's a solid neat pour compared to other cheaper grain blends.
@@TheBarleyLads That first bottle she got me is long gone, and I did experiment with it in cocktails, but probably 75% of that bottle was drank neat. The glass from it is currently my infinity bottle.
Agreed! Hard to find value anymore in Scotch and Irish. Apolitical take- the last time we had massive tariffs, prices spiked on foreign whiskey, so stock up on your favorites.
I tried this on the rocks once while on a cruise and I left over half on the table. I was less than impressed. Maybe it is better neat but I doubt it. You say for the money it is OK but bourbons like Four Roses, Buffalo Trace, Old Forester 86, and Buillett are better than this.
@@TheBarleyLads Glenfargas 12, Glenfiddich 12, and Glenlivet 12 are good. Glenfiddich 15 Soalra reserve and Glenfiddich 18 were really good. Of course JW Blue and Gold label are awesome but pricey. I have recently picked up a Glenlivet 15 and a Glenmorangie 10 that I will try in the future.
I was quite disappointed with this one tbh, I paid $34 and there are half a dozen cheaper blends I prefer to this. I got an overwhelming Pinot Grigio taste, I just cant get over that
I'd suggest mixing it as a simple highball or offering it to guests to get it off the shelf. Certainly plenty of Scotch out there to find something more agreeable. Thanks for watching!
This is still a blended Scotch, but yes it's a blended malt Scotch as it's 100% malted barley distilled in a pot still from multiple distilleries. Thanks for watching!
why do americans say this is good whisky? the producer admits this is a product for mixing. is there something about it that is tailored to american taste? you can get glenfiddich 12 for similar price
To each their own I guess. I believe I mention in the video and the description it was designed for mixing. Glenfiddich is priced significantly higher here so that's a factor for me. Also I'm not a big fan of that one. I prefer The Glenlivet or Glenmorangie for a similar price if I want a single malt.
Great channel. Informative. Quick. To the point. I appreciate the backstory and historical notes regarding ownership and company evolution.
Thanks for watching! We hope you find all of our videos to be just as helpful
Lovely dram, I really enjoy Monkey Shoulder
Thanks for watching! We've got a few more Scotch reviews if you're looking for more info.

Cocktails are always a good way to use up bad bottles but I think you'll enjoy Monkey Shoulder. It's a good sipper. Thanks for watching!
I haven’t tasted a lot of whiskey, but I like Tullamore Dew, Jack Daniels with Honey flavor. Bought Monkey Shoulder today. Gonna try it tonight.
Thanks for watching!
Wasn't a fan of scotch until I was given a glass of the Monkey.

@@TheBarleyLads not a fan of the peat. To earthy. I'll have to give the others you mentioned a try. Thanks for the referral.
I must try it then!
Been considering this one for close to a year now. The local market has it on an insane deal right now. So guess it's time to pull the trigger.
Decent sipper. Great for cocktails. Thanks for watching!
Great presentation. Thoroughly enjoyed.

New location and table, looks great!
We have multiple location changes coming up lol

Which is the Glenlivets have you enjoyed? I was surprised by the rum cask finish but the 12 is great for the price as well.
