We believe, have faith, in order to understand, reason.....in any argument of reasoning, we assume, trust, have faith, something is true in order to proceed in reasoning, otherwise we are lost in a infinite regress trying of providing evidence.
Sheldon Solomon is a contemporary renaissance man who embraces interdisciplinary investigations of consciousness, both contemporary and classical, with curiosity, passion, and genuine humility. "The Worm at the Core" is a great read.
1:52:20, Almost, perhaps, every time there's a major controversy, a public dichotomy of ideas about the truth, where normal people are in disagreement with many of their peers and neighbors, and much of society, both sides are right, and both sides are wrong. We need to strive to find our common ground, where we agree, instead of focusing only on where we dissent. @Policy Punchline Podcast, Great show! This is my first time watching. I will definitely seek more.
Wow! Just watched the full interview from beginning to end and feel invigorated to jump in and say that your ability to summarize Sheldon's discourse was impeccable and that perhaps a career in journalism would provide you with an opportunity to bring out your greatest potential. Food for thought but no recipe to go along with it alas. Show them you're a Tiger!
Trust is synonymous with faith, with out trust we couldn't function, you have to trust other people, you have to trust transportation, etc., so faith, trust is the fabric of life.
At 9:10, there is a way to defuse that argument: If you are a defecating meat bag, this is true if you assume that this meatbag is YOU. That is to assume the YOU is defined specifically and exclusively with the meatbag. And its animal fear responses, its slightly animal-evolved emotions, and pretty impressive biologically evolved thoughts. Using this thought to face the dissolution of the meatbag, we fear death. Perhaps there is some room to explore the possibility that these delineations are products of the meatbag's mind, and that there might be possibility of the YOU being identified as the singular infinite cosmos. That's only likely if the meatbag makes the space from meat-induced reactions and stimuli. This is very hard because the animal fear reaction is the most powerful force most of us ever encounter to our understanding of things. Every day.

Thanks for this. Solomon is a great guy. A little bit confused on his views on religion, but the rest is great.

If a reminder of our own physical demise (death 💀) cause an increase in "dis-ease" can a reminder of "being alive" do the opposite?
