    Interesting, I tried and tried just like you did, hoping to get a match for metric threads on my imperial lathe but found more that didn't work than did so eventually acquired the correct change wheels, it has made it so much easier. Oh, FYI > is "greater than" < is "less than"😊

      It doesn’t really work, as proven, however if you were stuck in the middle of the desert and needed an m12 thread cutting on an imperial lathe then you could scrape by. A 1% error would be much more manageable. I did find a really good website that listed sets of gears that would get much closer, but it’s far better just to buy or make the 127 tooth gear required to convert an imperial lead screw.
      I was never good at grammar, I knew what I meant! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment 👍

    it always amuses me to ponder.. given the universe is vast and there is certanly technologicly advanced aliean life somwhere... do they also have screws? what do the heads look like? i wonder if they would have gravitated to the exact same solutions as we have, or somthing totally different...

      A very insightful comment! Maybe they have advanced technologies that are void of screws?? Hopefully something different, I’d be disappointed if it were similar to ours…

    So BSP & Whitworth are the same thing?

    • @theyorkshirefabshop8776
      @theyorkshirefabshop8776  Рік тому +1

      Bsp and whitworth only share the same thread angle. There are no overlapping common sizes that I’m aware of. Plus, very often bsp is actually bspt and the thread is tapered. Is this what you meant?

      @@theyorkshirefabshop8776 I'm in Canada, so BSP, BSPT, & Witworth aren't really a thing... So it was mostly Idol Curiosity... and yes your answer was quite good!

      Ah that explains things. Think of the difference between npt and unc. One if for pipework, the other is for bolting.
      UNC is the American equivalent of our BSW (British standard whitworth) and UNF is the American equivalent to BSF (British standard fine)
      There are lots of others we could talk about but it’s probably best we don’t! This mixing of threads between imperial and metric would be closer for unified and metric because they share the same thread angle so tooling would be compatible with either, but that still relies on the pitch being close.
      There are one or two sizes in unc and bsw that have the same outside diameter and pitch, so those can be exchanged between one another, 3/8” springs to mind, but obviously the thread angle differs between the two. After all, unc is heavily based on British standard.

      @@theyorkshirefabshop8776 Thanks for taking the time to explain all this. I only own 2 Brit taps, a 3/4 BSP(T) that I got out of China when I ordered a 3/4 NPT, and a 1/8 BSP(T) that came in a local Automotive Store's Name brand kit...

    You'll be better off making the 127 tooth metric conversion gear set on the milling machine. It isn't a big problem even if you just grind a HSS single point fly cutter with the correct gear tooth profile.

      Totally agree with you, as that is the plan. However this is a demonstration that (in an emergency situation) it is possible to generate something close enough to get you by. With gear alterations it is possible to get even closer, but a 127 tooth gear is the only way to get it right. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!

      Sorry to hear the sound wasn’t as good as you would expect. Unfortunately my equipment isn’t particularly complex but I am looking to upgrade for future videos so thank you for the feedback ❤️
