Great used bike buying advice Ken!! And I hadn't heard of the "get to" analogy....but I sure do like it! I'm sure I'll quote it as well because we can all use that kind of reminder. Looking forward to starting my new year off with a New Years Day ride as well.
Great video Ken. My '06 FZ1 has over 60k and still runs awesome. I also have the Nelson Rigg sport tail bag. Due to the shape of the seat and the bag sagging there will be reduced area inside. I bought a spare rear seat on ebay, removed the cover and foam and screwed the tail bag to the plastic seat frame. I can't wait for spring to ride.
Thanks man... that's a great idea for the tail bag. Until I bought the FZ1, I had no idea how popular and well like this bike was. Also, its great to here so many owners have a ton a miles on them with very little issues.
I bought a 2002 F-Z1 with 12,000 miles, I had to adjust the exup valve, replaced the thermostat, and fix the infamous white connector, I haven't had a single problem with it, mine is carbureted but the inside of the tank is like new and I think it's the best motorcycle I have owned.
lovely bike, looks like it started life as a FZ1S and been converted to FZ1N but in my opinion the FZ1 is probably the best sports tourer out there for the money.
I have always ascribed to the same philosophy of "get to" instead of "have to". Keeping your perspective positive makes all the difference in life. I'm so glad to hear you verbalize it for your audience!! Good job on all the hard work to your FZ (I would have to name it Fuzzy, sorry 😜). I like the mirror swap for sure and agree about the rear turn signals. Can't wait to see what you get instead!
Ha... I like that name for bike:). I'm not the most articulate speaker, and I tend to butcher english language, but yeah, it sure does help when you put things in perspective.
Sold the 2008 FZ1, Its a Puig, but you have to modify the support brackets for it to fit if you a have FZ1 naked conversion. The screens are for FZ1's that came originally with no fairing.
Your dark antifreeze (mine was the same) is likely from OEM stop-leak that is added at the factory according to the crusty old mechanic I used to use. He's since closed shop with no word as to why, unfortunately. Bought an '07 last June and it had just over 8k on the odometer. Overall, looked to be in good shape and I've put about 6k on it so far. I learned how to solder because a few wires were not connected and I was okay with that. Recently found oil coming from the oil pan weep hole and I am not comfortable pulling the oil pump and working on it while laying on my garage floor. Seems like one of those jobs I'd get 80% in and realize I'm way over my head. If I had another set of eyes with more experience than myself, yeah I'd be willing, but not by my lonesome...
I bought a low mileage 07 and had the dark coolant and the oil weeping too. I encourage you to take a crack at removing and rebuilding the oil/water pump (it's one pump with a coolant side and an oil side). The pump is relatively simple to rebuild and you can easily find a service manual for these bikes online. I replaced the mechanical seal and put a new shaft in mine (the old mechanical seal had worn a groove into the old shaft) and we were off to the races again.
I’ve got an FZ1 I’m having issues with. Sounds like a bearing is going bad. I’ve got some videos on it. But sounds like a whine noise and bearing noise. Goes away once warm. But sounds like it’s in the clutch area
@@Yo-Ken already replaced the stator with the good yamaha redesigned one. Had an rm stator installed. But it immediately fucked my shit up. There was marble noises and stuff. Once I changed to the new flywheel all I had left was the whine. Don’t recommend garbage Chinese parts. I even replaced the flywheel bearings too. No change. Took it to dealer to have them look at. They clearly didn’t. They just looked at the stator cuz I said I was in there. Came back and told me it was all done right and that the noise was in my cam drive. But said they’d have to tear it down to look. I honestly don’t think they even tried cuz I’m a car tech and when i stick my stethoscope up to it. The clutch cover is extremely loud. Key takeaway is never trust stealerships. And if you’re mechanically inclined do the work yourself. There are a TON OF HACKS in the repair industry.
Emotional purchases have screwed me more than anything in my shopping life ….still don’t know if my emotional fz1 purchase is gonna bite me in the ass but fingers crossed ..
Yeah I bought a large tank bag online , but now that it’s here I’m thinking i may have to rig it as a tail bag lol I love tank bags for quick access to stuff but the fz1 tank makes me worried the ole cortech 2.0 18 L will block the dash ….. nice ride

Yes, it was a faring FZ1 that was converted. I'm more of a naked bike guy, but I do agree its an amazing machine for the price.
