homegoing was one of my favourite books of 2021 - such a cool approach to a narrative that explores generational trauma in a very innovative way, happy reading!
Heya I love ur channel! Just wanted to say that I found the different translations of the Iliad/Odyssey to have a HUGE impact on my enjoyment. Super literal ones like Rieu and Lattimore are good for study but Fagles who kinda modernises it a bit more I found to actually be way more beautiful and impactful. Also, as good as the Iliad is I think the Odyssey might be even better. They’re at least looking at life from kinda opposite poles which is maybe why I resonated with one more than the other. Well-wishes from one Aussie to another! Oh and have a good Chrissy
Yay! So glad to see Kimmerer in this video after my comment on your last video :)))) she also narrates the audiobook which is very good if you want to keep the same vibe as the ologies podcast
can't recommend our share of night enough. it displaced virginia woolf's the waves as my favourite book. the horror is impeccable, and how she braided it with argentina's history... *french kiss*. i devoured it, even celebrated the last hundred pages with some wine and sushi, reading it became a whole event.
I'll definitely download and join the club when they have an android app 📚 I'd love to join a read. Crime and Punishment is great. The last major Dostoevsky I need to tackle is Brothers K. I think The Idiot is my favorite. I've only read My Brilliant Friend but loved it. I need to continue with Ferrante I'm excited for the Memory Police adaptation. Our Share of Night was amazing. She has a new collection I'll get to. Babel didn't quite work for me, and not for why you might think. I largely agree with the politics of it. I can see it landing for others. I think it's pretty polarizing. Hungerstone looks amazing. I saved it previously when I saw the cover. And it's a reworking of Carmilla which is great.
Always shocked at seeing the reasoning for poor reviews for Babel, I think a lot of people went in expecting another Atlas six/if we were villains but it follows strong themes of colonization and racism, it is still so much more than that however. I think you will absolutely adore this book! Cannot wait to see your thoughts on Babel 🤭🤭
Classic Books Recommendation: (1) She: the history of adventure by H. Rider Haggard, (2) Notes from the Underground by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, (3) The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov
Great list! I read Our Share Of Night and it was incredible. Very much a slow burn type of novel, and is reminiscent to Stephen King’s slice of life storytelling. I also read a short story from Mariana Enriquez that was included in a short story collection published by an independent publisher (Mcsweeney’s) and it was fantastic as well. The translation is superb, and the imagery is absolutely horrifying. Could not recommend Enriquez more for any horror fan.
I’d love an in-depth journaling video from you !
i will definitely make one!!
Yessss would love a deep dive into your writing and journaling!
