“I feel like Ravyn with a y wanted to throw himself off of a bridge a lot more than Raihn with an h, you know what I mean?” is the kind of sentence my 52 year old bibliophile dad would laugh so hard at.
Just saw a tiktok of a woman describing her favorite UA-camr and that they deserve like, cinematic deals and all this stuff bc they’re so witty and funny and truly deserve the world. Plus they can make her sit and watch 2 hrs recaps straight of books and I was like “yeah, that’s like newlynova” only for her to then reveal it was you the whole time! And then you uploaded and I thought I’d share
I’m in a several year long slump of not reading anything to completion. I just can’t seem to read any book all the way through, usually I’m losing interest or literally losing the book lol
Watching you go from talking about being in a reading slump to giggly and happy reading Nightmare before Kissmas is like an inspirational sports movie arc for the burned out nerdy kids ❤
oh my god i completely agree with the sentiment of not doing end-of-the-year content before the actual end of the year. I recognize that a lot of content creators take a break from posting during mid to late december, but posting an end-of-year wrap up during the second week of december feels like losing free real estate on possible books read during the last stretch of the month!
1:25 the realest feeling. I've had a a "To Read" list for years, but all those books feel "too heavy" for my chronically burnt out, emotionally volatile brain. I need literary junk food. Yet apparently I'm even picky about the literary junk food cause I've finished maybe 2 novels this whole year. 😭 My only saving grace has been 2 fanfics I've been rereading for comfort.
I quit my job at the end of November and wanted to take a month off as a little break to read and just relax. Instead I have been so anxious about my dwindling bank account and finding a new job in January that I've barely read anything! 😭 Happy to know I'm not alone in my slump. Thank you Lexi 🫶
Ooof, I know how that feels. Very tough. I have been there and I'm a very ADHD, very anxious person. I think fully resting and enjoying for anxious people is a delusional plan unless you feel like you've got yourself so I would probably suggest doing 15-20 mins of CV updating, researching, whatever it is for you in the morning and then telling yourself very firmly that you HAVE made a step towards a better future today and you allow yourself to guiltlessly recharge now and do fun things for the rest of the day. Takes some willpower but at some point worked for me. Whatever you decide to do, hang in there!
i read 40 books alone within the first three months of this year and had plenty of steam left before i had a life changing event. i have read less than 10 books since then and i don’t know what altered in my brain but i miss what i used to enjoy. don’t be hard on yourself. people go through life and not everyone reaches their end of year goals. back in march, i was excited to destroy my reading challenge and now i am disappointed, but my life is not determined on how many books i can read in a month and i can still participate in hobbies i love without doing it myself. thank you lexi for showing us your ups and downs, not a social media filter. it reminds people like me that we don’t have to exert all of our energy into having the biggest number.
As someone who wants to be a bookworm but can’t focus for shit anymore (COVID really fucked me up), I think the best thing you can do is take it easy. I’ve only read 2 books to completion this year. Not my proudest moment but we ball
Last year and the year before I read two classics via Substack and I have to say- they were great ways to get out of reading slumps! Dracula I did in 2022, and since it’s an epistolary novel, every day there’s a letter or journal entry, you get that day’s content on that day. It makes it really fun and since it’s emailed to you it doesn’t take any effort. In 2023 I read Les mis, which seems really daunting, because it’s 365 chapters. But that’s one chapter a day! Some of the chapters are several pages long, but some are just a paragraph. And again- it’s emailed to you, so you can whip your phone out at any time and just be reading a thousand page novel in your email. :)
Last time I had a horrible migraine, your video dropped just in time to comfort me. Tonight my brain is being evil and mean to me (as it sometimes does, disablingly so) and you drop a video just in time yet again! Something about your delivery and "stage" presence brings me a sense of chaotic peace - which is the best kind of peace, if you ask me. Thanks!
I'm sorry your brain is being so evil and mean to you right now. I have some conditions that give me mean disabling brain as well, I know I don't fully understand your experience, but I'm sure it sucks and I'm sorry. I also used her last video to help with a migraine! Her videos are just so comfy!! And you're totally right about the chaotic peace haha Hope you have some nicer brain days soon 💚
Thank you for everything this year, lexi. I found you just when I needed someone to tell me that being in a reading slump is okay and I’ll find something I enjoy again. I look forward to your year in review videos!
I don't know how deep into comments you go, but I just wanted to say that I love your content. I'm not into (genre-wise) half of what you cover, but you still manage to make me sit down and listen with full attention, so you do an amazing job at covering this stuff. Every time I see you've uploaded I'm psyched and I just wanna thank you for making these videos :)
i was in an awful reading slump all year and i’ve finally gotten out of it with the help of frederick backman and your videos :) merry Christmas friends 🎄!
omg i just finished the nightmare before kissmas and it was so goofy and fun !! like yeah, was it the best ever? noooo. but did i enjoy it and have a fun time and kick my feet a little? YES.
Genuinely thank you for sharing this, and for talking about struggles that would be easier to not acknowledge, much less acknowledge online. I hope that the next day, week, and month are easier for you, but remember something you’ve said to a bunch of us watching: your productivity isn’t your worth, and even if you just don’t touch a book, you’re still cool and interesting and also people in your life think you’re a good person. I’m an internet rando so I can’t say I know you, but you have unknowingly helped me get back into reading while in the hardest part of college, made my days better in grad school, and helped me bond with some new people in my life. I hope this video helped you, because I know it helped a lot of others
i always get into a bad reading slump at the end of the year. likely just the general stress of the holidays combined with the fact that not having a set schedule leads me to not do anything at all. i’m going to try to finish the two books on my tbr that i bought prior to december (one of them is a comic collection, so shouldn’t be that hard!) but i think my other books im going to allow to roll over into next year
Girl I feel you, I read zero books in November. I did start books though. Hoping to finish 2 of them before the end of the year. Take care of yourself ❤
Ngl the serpent and the wings of night reminded me of Powerless. Though I really didn't like Powerless because of its shallow writing I'll still give this a try.
I've also been in a bit of a reading slump this year. I record my reading in a journal my sister gave me, broken down by month along with anticipated book releases each month and, for fall and winter, a seasonal TBR (inspired by this channel, so thanks!). In July, I had to go to the urgent care for anxiety, and watching your reading slump and watching you push through has really helped me, so thanks.
As a romance reader and not a fantasy reader, the serpent and the wings of might totally got me into romantasy! I was obsessedddd. Camp magic is such a great way of describing it 🤣 Unfortunately the second one didn’t quite hit as well as the first one, though I still enjoyed it overall. I was sooo excited for book 3, but I’m a third of the way through and it’s been a struggle 😭
"I will read one page" is something I think you have said in a previous video, and I have taken it to heart in a way I did NOT expect 😅 it is now my circuit breaker expression when I know I want to stop scrolling/binging and start reading. I just have to read one page.
I majored in English. Although I enjoyed reading my assignments, I did encounter burnout. It took me years to read for fun. I agree about finding books YOU want to read. So I started to read memoirs and other nonfiction books. This helped me fall back into reading for fun again.
I'm a really slow reader, so 5 books a month is wonderful for me. Trying to keep up with fast readers just takes all the joy out of it for me. I tried tracking for the last months, but it led to me getting INTO a reading slump because I started to become stubborn with dnfing. In the past, I would just dnf whenever, but with those goals (at least 5 books a month) I did not dare to dnf a book once I sunk some time into it. So, all this to say, it made reading feel like a chore, and in a world where reading is supposed to be an escape and so much already takes joy... that just sucks. Guess I'm back to reading at a snail's pace! :D
LEXIIIIIIIIII YAYYYYYY this month’s been unreasonably rough for the past few weeks BUT WE’LL PUSH THROUGH IT ALL TOGETHER !!!!!!!! CONGRATS ON THE SPONSOR YOUR VIDEOS ARE FLAMES ‼️‼️‼️
the fact that things are so horrible right now actually made me do the opposite of a slump, because i'm avoiding thinking about anything by consuming some kind of non-political media at every possible moment
WE ARE BLESSED. Your attitude towards reading has really helped me enjoy it again. I used to read a stupid amount, but it quickly went close to zero and that in itself made me less likely to even try picking up a book. The fact any of us can still read and take joy out of it is a thing of beauty we should never let go of. Also, I wanna buy Nightmare before Kissmass now. Also I want you to read Hunger Phangs by Joy Demorra so bad now lol Thanks for giving me the fuel I needed to get through the holidays!
I love that I've absorbed enough of your content directly into my brain that I can predict with fairly high accuracy exactly how many stars you're going to give a book before you've even finished talking about your opinions of it
The gasp I gasped when you said "Wattpad". I do fear the panic at the disco song where he says "hey look ma I made it" started playing in my head. Also I love that you ensured that no one forgot Raihn's true self, by saying "rain with an h" in all references. I don't have any fun thoughts to comment because I work retail and my brain is a bit dead from last minute holiday shoppers, but it wouldn't be a lexi video if I didn't uncharacteristically write out a comment. Manifesting all the good energy and fun books for you
29:19 Seeing you get joy out of this silly little book was like, osmosing the joy to me (which feels kind of meta in the context of the joy-based magic system). I also have been recently giving myself permission to read things that aren’t necessarily academic or high-brow. It’s good to see you taking care of yourself. Wonderful upload, as usual - I hope you have a restful holiday :)
Yay you’re back looking fabulous as ever. I’m in such a reading slump too so hopefully one of these books can help me 🤞🏼I love The Nightmare Before Kissmas 💜 Merry Christmas
I’m always so impressed by your ability to retell the plots of the books you’re reading lol if someone asked me to do this I would need 5 business days to gather my thoughts
just finished reading half a soul from your rec in the last video - truly such a banger!!!! like emily wilde’s encyclopaedia of faeries but make it regency era and what more can i really ask for in a book
I'm not even going to lie... that Kissmas book has been my roman empire since nov. 3rd... BTW, there's going to be a sequel with Coal's brother and... the st. pat's prince... yeeeeeeeaaaaah
Lexi, I think you would really enjoy the novella for The Serpent & the Wings of Night (Six Scorched Roses). It follows different characters and is a short easy read that’s gothic and atmospheric and romantic. Theres a town that’s suffering from a god-cursed illness and the main character is trying to find a cure through studying vampire blood.
If you want to read more holiday romance books I highly recommend Holiday Romance and Snowed in by Catherine Walsh. They are the perfect balance of romance and holiday cheer without being cheesy or cringey. Great banter as well. Hope you'll have the best Christmas if you celebrate x
Okay but the quote you read from nightmare before kissmas is my favorite part of the book😂 it certainly is a ✨time✨ Also, I know this year has been hard (an understatement) but I’m proud of you for getting through it and kicking ass. Take care of yourself 🫶
i’ve been in an AWFUL reading slump since starting college (only read one non-assigned book and that was shark heart so i devoured it in like a day before being consumed with sadness) and this is perfect timing
YAY, NEW LEXI VIDEO!!! I had such a weird reading year. Some months I would read 15+ books followed by a three month period where I would read 5 books between those months. I'm currently in my fourth reading slump of the year.
This is so helpful cuz Aug Sept and Oct I didn’t finish a single book I started. Thankfully the new Percy Jackson book and the fact that I can finish a book in my 10 hr delivery driver shift really pulled me out for Nov
A treat for me??? Christmas came early this yearrrr❤❤ I am highkey tempted to try and read some romantasy, half because I want to dip my toes into the romance pool and half because I KNOW I'm about to want to read way more fantasy because I just got casted in She Kills Monsters (if you ever decide to start reading plays I'd recommend it actually, its fantasy, dnd, and queer) I started Bunny recently after watching one of your videos and I fear I'm obsessed with it
A WATTPAD SPONSORSHIP??? THIS IS SO META LOL LEXI YOU MADE IT
ikr i was gobsmacked
Being sponsored by wattpad is such a flex hold on now-
now hold on
WATTPAD??? omg you’re iconic
“I feel like Ravyn with a y wanted to throw himself off of a bridge a lot more than Raihn with an h, you know what I mean?” is the kind of sentence my 52 year old bibliophile dad would laugh so hard at.
I don't know your dad but I'm a 35 year old Lithuanian woman who has shamefully read One Dark Window and I HOWLED at Lexi saying this
Just saw a tiktok of a woman describing her favorite UA-camr and that they deserve like, cinematic deals and all this stuff bc they’re so witty and funny and truly deserve the world. Plus they can make her sit and watch 2 hrs recaps straight of books and I was like “yeah, that’s like newlynova” only for her to then reveal it was you the whole time! im so happy to see im not the only one in a reading slump...it's been a whole year
Same. Ever since I graduated from high school 5 years ago it's been a downward spiral 🥲
sameeeeeee- last year i beat my reading g goal by like 10. this year i am 50 books behind 😳
I’m in a several year long slump of not reading anything to completion. I just can’t seem to read any book all the way through, usually I’m losing interest or literally losing the book lol
the wattpad sponsorship is so full circle and I love that for you
Watching you go from talking about being in a reading slump to giggly and happy reading Nightmare before Kissmas is like an inspirational sports movie arc for the burned out nerdy kids ❤
LMAO I agree. Best comment

Not me, a 51-year-old woman, finding Nightmare Before Kissmas on Kindle Unlimited and proceeding to binge it immediately.
Ur living ur best life n I love that for u🫶 lolll
Thank you for everything this year, lexi. I found you just when I needed someone to tell me that being in a reading slump is okay and I’ll find something I enjoy again. I look forward to your year in review videos!
the second book sounds like a sillier red white and royal blue and honestly, i respect it. i might read it down the road lol

REAL, watching Lexi's videos has really re-ignited my enjoyment of reading after being in a long reading slump during college

I think you are the only one who shares the same taste with me so far. And istg Im not complaining 😂.
i hope you know the positive impact you have on people!!
Girl I feel you, I read zero books in November. I did start books though. Hoping to finish 2 of them before the end of the year. Take care of yourself ❤
P.s. I had you on the TV and my husband came in and asked "are you listening to your book friend?" So I guess we're besties now

Left that comment before actually watching, and the comment about the crochet blanket had me like "HOW did you get into my home?!?"

I am in my 3rd year of reading at least 5 minutes a day. Works like a charm.
omg i feel you. i read so much so quick that I burned myself right out & into a reading slump.
the fact that things are so horrible right now actually made me do the opposite of a slump, because i'm avoiding thinking about anything by consuming some kind of non-political media at every possible moment

i just got out of a three month reading slump so i was really excited to see that 1) you posted!!! and 2) that i wasn’t alone :)
my holidays have been saved ty lexi;
also not us reading the serpent & the wings of night at the same time...we need that book club asap
29:19 Seeing you get joy out of this silly little book was like, osmosing the joy to me (which feels kind of meta in the context of the joy-based magic system). i always love it when you talk abt your reading slumps they make me feel so seen💞
Lexi!!! You have no idea how great it is to see you! Your videos bring me so much joy :)
Wattpad sponsorship is so queen of you actually.
So glad we have someone like you on UA-cam giving us iconic sass! Here's to another year with Nova!!
I LITERALLY just read serpent and wings if night to get out of a slump and I LOVED IT
Ok, you sold me. Definitely picking up that second book first chance I get

Ура Ура, Лекси выпустила новое видео!!! Ура ура!!!
I’m always so impressed by your ability to retell the plots of the books you’re reading lol if someone asked me to do this I would need 5 business days to gather my thoughts
you have no clue how much i needed this
We love you too!!! Ugh I can't wait for your next video 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻
lexi vids always show up exactly when i need a new vid to watch 😌😌
i was rewatching your old videos as motivation for my reading slump and here you are
just finished reading half a soul from your rec in the last video - truly such a banger!!!! like emily wilde’s encyclopaedia of faeries but make it regency era and what more can i really ask for in a book
OMG LEXII literally just finished studying and then u came!!!!!
gonna use this as inspiration to escape my own year long reading slump. also, see u in 2024 [sic], too, lexi :)
I'm not even going to lie... that Kissmas book has been my roman empire since nov. 3rd... BTW, there's going to be a sequel with Coal's brother and... the st. pat's prince... yeeeeeeeaaaaah
I'm totally with you on waiting until the year ends to list the best and worst of the year.
I am so happy, this was my christmas present! Thank you Lexi!
I'm really not surprised you love the nightmare before Christmas. I love it too. Happy new year everyone🎉 I have hopes for 2025.
Lexi, I think you would really enjoy the novella for The Serpent & the Wings of Night (Six Scorched Roses). It follows different characters and is a short easy read that’s gothic and atmospheric and romantic. lexi posted my day has been saved
Okay but the quote you read from nightmare before kissmas is my favorite part of the book😂 it certainly is a ✨time✨
Also, I know this year has been hard (an understatement) but I’m proud of you for getting through it and kicking ass. Take care of yourself 🫶
literally perfectly timed video as i am scrolling on UA-cam instead of reading as i type lol
19:49 thanks I really needed that today❤
HECK the slump, we're just happy you're here 🥺
You are SO BRAVE for washing towels & sheets
WATTPAD!? NO WAY- this shouldn't make me as happy as it does. Congratulations!!!
So glad you enjoyed Kissmas! I was shocked when I was watching the video and you mentioned that you got multiple recs for it. 😂
I was NOT expecting the wattpad sponsor that is amazing! Get your bag girl 😌
i’ve been in an AWFUL reading slump since starting college (only read one non-assigned book and that was shark heart so i devoured it in like a day before being consumed with sadness) and this is perfect timing
the "soulcrushing midwest winter" comment was so real :') michigan is trying to kill me!
YAY, NEW LEXI VIDEO!!! I had such a weird reading year. Some months I would read 15+ books followed by a three month period where I would read 5 books between those months. I'm currently in my fourth reading slump of the year.
the absolute joy that just shot through my veins when i saw this
I’m going to go pick up nightmare before kissmas tomorrow. what an amazingly silly-sounding story. I need it.
