Shyamalan is one of the biggest hit or miss directors to me. Watching his movies feels a bit like playing Russian roulette.
With russian roulette there is only 1 bullet out of 6 chambers, so pretty good metaphor
Breaking News: M Night's next project will be called: Russian Roulette. After this his next project is: Hit or Miss..
Great description. Though he’s created enough failures to not take himself so serious that he refers to himself as “M. Night.” You need a better track record to adopt such a prickish stance, y’know?
Idk I kind of like that though, even though I hate when it doesn't work.
When it does, it's great.
😂
I am SO happy to hear that you liked it. NOW I can't wait to see it. I've never read the book, and I only saw the very first teaser once (which I barely remember), so I'm going in pretty blind. Best way to see anything. Great video Emma, peace!
The book really shook me to my core. It went places I didn’t think it would tbh. Im curious to see what was kept for the film! Thanks for the review, Emma!
M. Night changed several different things from the book.
Most of the grim stuff were removed.
I read the book last year and from the way you described it and what I gathered from the trailer it sounds like it will be a pretty close adaptation from the book. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing this!
I saw it earlier on and I thought it was one of M Night's best films in years. Bautista is fantastic, career-best work so far, all the actors were really solid (they usually are in Shymalan's movies) and it just really worked for me on the whole. I also give it a very solid 7/10 🙂
M. Night Shyamalan is one of my fav directors, so im in
👀
I'm going tomorrow if there is any public transportation (there are strikes planned). I'm a big wrestling fan, so it's awesome to see Dave Batista, Chris Jericho and the Rock (Dwayne Johnson) in cinema right now.
I turned the contrast down and brightness up on my display and there was a hideously grimacing fiend obscured by the darkness of your car's back seat! 😱😨
1:51 “Let me do it for you” 😁
I just started reading the book last night and I could not put it down. Before I knew it, it was 2:30am and I had to get up for work. Oops!
Anyway. Looking forward to finishing the book and then seeing the movie!!!! And now I’m more excited about the movie hearing that you enjoyed it!
I too, just got back and actually really enjoyed this one. I know it was a big departure from the book but I loved the story of trauma and how it can be kinda blinding as to how to navigate it when not handling that trauma. Excellent review Emma. Also Bautista as Leonard I felt like Shyamalan definitely played on the character of Lenny from Of Mice and Men as that subversion of a really big dude with such a soft core
Ur hand gesture is sooo awesome
It's helping a lot to empathize the review
And the review is❤️❤️
When I watch the trailers and it said from M Night Shyamalan I was sold so I'm seeing this film regardless. Drax and Ron Wheesley I love Guardians of the Galaxy the girlfriend she loves Harry Potter match made In heaven.
I just finished the book last Tuesday and absolutely loved it. It was harrowing. I'm very excited for this even if it is going to be different. Thanks so much for your Come With Me reviews! Super neat.
I loved the book. It stuck with me for a long time after I finished it. Definitely would love to see a book video from you!
You know me, I enjoy M. Night's movies (most of them), so I'm really looking forward to seeing this one. Thanks, Em!
Pleasantly surprised to hear this, though so far it's only the first review I've watched. M. Night is one of those directors who can be great or can be really terrible...actually, his directing is usually quite good, and his films live or die on the script/premise. You never know if you're getting an Unbreakable or a Lady in the Water. Hoping for the former.
I'm reading the book right now so would love a book to movie comparison if you fancied it! Keen to catch this one in cinemas so I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it, bit of a mixed bag when it's Shyamalan but the cast looks so good!
The book was excellent and tore me apart. I was looking forward for your review!
I’ve been waitngggg for your review for this!!!!
I’ve got my tickets for Thursday to see it with my wife. Very excited!
I saw this lastnight. I agree with your review. It was a cool psychological ride. I do wish there was more of a wrestle between um...the perspectives of each...daddy. Trying not to spoil! It seemed pretty clear to me early on what was going on happen. I guess I wanted more of the M. Night surprise element. But that's on me!
The close ups between the two at the beginning had me feeling distressed and claustrophobic in a forest!
All in all, yeah, solid film. 😊
love your new intro!
I’m glad you made an association to The Invitation, I loved that film. I’m excited for this! Thanks, Emma ❤
Hi Emma, I loved your analysis, I have read the book and loved it even though the ending was ambiguous!. I can't wait to see it. Love your channel. Love from Ireland!.💕
Lovely review with some technical points being made about the framing and cinematography. Great job 👌
Awesome banner intro!!! Congrats
So excited for this one 😍😍😍
Book club? I’m ready! 😂
Screw humanity, I'm saving my family!
But your family would have no future. They would just be wandering around on an empty earth for all eternity. I don’t know, this movie made me question that decision a lot!
@@lilacs.and.lace92 Works for me.
probably giving this one a miss as I read the book a couple years ago and it had something that's just a no go for me in horror movies but I'm really happy to see positive reviews for it!! I also agree that the title is not good, the books was so much better I hate that they changed it
If you're no go is what I think it is then you're safe to watch the movie. They changed some big parts of the book.
@@HouseofHannah oh thank you sm that's really interesting I didn't even consider that they would change it ! just for claritys sake (and BIG SPOILERS upcoming for anyone who hasn't read the book!!!!!). ------------------ it was the child's death that I don't want to watch I absolutely hated it
@@bea9631 (SPOILERS!!! DON'T READ ON IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW!!!!)

She lives in the movie. No harm comes to her at all.
YAYYY I’m so excited to hear you liked it! I loved the novel and was so nervous for this adaptation
Thanks for the review, Emma. I will be checking out the film this weekend.
I'm watching this Friday in the UK, love the book so I can't wait. 😃
The book is amazing… I hope you like it. I’m so excited to see the movie because of the cast especially. What I took away from the book is it has a message about fear, selfishness and selflessness, and the power of love. The ending in the book is also quite ambiguous. I wonder if these themes are still present in the movie.
I’ve got my ticket for Tuesday to see this! Can’t wait!
Emma I am going to watch knock at the cabin 2023 in Friday imax 3D theater I got tickets for it lol
I love Tremblay, read two novels and a collection of short stories - he really deserves all the praises and recognition hes getting lately. M. Night...ehm, I try them all but usually I tap out around 30/40 minutes and I don't do that so often. With Old it was a record - i think someone called me after 15 mins and after the call I was like "should I really get back to that %&it?"
loved the book, so excited for this
As soon as I finished the book I knew the ending would be changed, so I’m wondering how I’ll like the films ending. The book is quite grim and that would have been a very shocking moment I wish it would have had. Maybe an alternate ending on the dvd? 😂
“Grim” is perfect characterization of the novel.
Kings endings…rarely as good as the book as a whole.
Edited for weird wording…still seems weird 😅
The ending is very bland in the movie. Made me say "that's it?"
Absolutely LOVED the book! Would be interesting to have a "spoilers" conversation on the movie as per your interpretation of the ending. Spoiler: All Paul Tremblay's books end like that 😅
Ony my must see list. Plus I like Dave Bautista.
So excited!
Just saw the film! And I have to agree with you that it’s a pretty solid thriller. In comparison to the book, I thought Shyamalan did a good job visually enthralling you in the tension and suspense. Despite the plot deviations from the second half of the book, I thought the movie stays true to the themes, atmosphere, and characters of the book, while standing apart as a solid film. I actually didn’t like the ending of the book, and while the ending of the film wasn’t strong, I preferred the way the movie ended because it made the most sense for character development of Eric and Andrew.
I'm really excited and ready to watch this movie. Yes his movies are a hit or miss since I liked Split but didn't like Glass or Old. If it's up this week I'll definitely go see it.
I saw it last week at a free Alamo Drafthouse screening here in NYC. It was definitely full of tension and incredibly frustrating at times. I was rather disappointed with it. Wasn't sure if it was just me, but when the movie ended, everyone sat there quiet. I was expecting some clapping or cheers. Everyone just left on a down note. Maybe I need to see it again. At least it was a free screening.
I would LOVE to see a book review of the Paul Tremblay book!
Great book. Looking forward to the film.
I think the trailers and teasers gave away too much.
Super excited to see this movie! Not only am I a Shyamalan fan, but it was filmed just a few miles from my house. His movies that the critics didn't like tend to be my favorites (loved The Village), so we'll see what happens with this one. Thanks for the spoiler-free review! Also excited to read the book once I check out the movie.
I still haven't seen Old.
Trailer didn't really grab me.
I saw the Knock at the Cabin trailer in front of M3gan. Trailer was definitely more entertaining than M3gan.
Glad to hear that Emma enjoyed this. Looking forward to seeing it...
After a year away from it, this movie is great again on a second watch. I'm glad I waited that long. Probably will wait just as long to watch it again.
Yes I have been waiting for this review :D!
🤘🤘🤘
Thank you
@@spookyastronauts 🤘🤘🤘🤘
M.Night is awesome. I even liked Old ! Was waiting for your review Emma. Will definitely go see it this weekend.
Agreed. only real misses imo are Split and Lady in the Water. Even The Happening was really fun from a "it's so dumb it's actually great" perspective.
Thanks for the review, I’ll definitely check it out.
I wonder, is it similar to The Mist?
Bought tickets for tomorrow s showing. I agree he's hit and miss, but I just will always go see his movies regardless. They're just always very intriguing. The only one I didn't go see was the last Airbender. Dodged a bullet there.
I’m really looking forward to this one! I tend to like almost all of his movies, and love servant and the claustrophobic camerawork. Hearing that you enjoyed it makes me even more excited! 🤗 Hoping to make it to the cinema to see it!
The book, the movie is based on - Cabin At The End of The World- by Paul G. Tremblay is excellent.
Based on your review, and my experience of M. Night, I will wait for this one to hit streaming. Thank you for the review. (I wish he would not put himself in his movies - maybe some of his fans like that, but I find it annoying)
This is the first video from you that I watched, and your review is fantastic! I'm happy to subscribe to your channel, and I look forward to experiencing your past and future analyses.
By the way, I'm excited to watch Knock at the Cabin. I read The Cabin at the End of the World, and heard that the second half is quite different between the two. However, I generally love book-to-film adaptations that differ quite a bit from one another, as long as they honor the core aspects of the main characters, as well as the themes. Otherwise, I feel a bit bored if I watch what to me feels like a copy of what I already read, rather than a creative, honorable adaptation.
P.S. One of my favorite genres, and my favorite type of horror, is psychological horror.
wow, I had no idea it was a book. Now I don't know which to do first. BTW, is Old worth seeing?
Loved your thoughts on this!
I personally didn't love it, but mainly because I didn't really feel the tension of the film or really buy the ambiguity of the premise(?) if that makes sense. As much as I loved the character building, everything just seemed far too bog-standard in the way the plot panned out.
Usually I don't have an issue with predictable movies, but here it did really drain my enjoyment from the film. I'd give it a 5 or maybe 6/10
Happy Wednesday
Thanks for the review and so glad you enjoyed the movie! Definitely hoped this one wouldn't feel like a "return to the beach." :D
You have the best horror movie reviews and the best review of Knock at the Cabin. I am going to see the horror movie Knock at the Cabin next Tuesday in the Local Cinema
I read the book but didn't actually like it much so haven't really had the movie on my to watch list - but you mentioned a different ending? I may have to give it a watch when it hits streaming I guess.
Im about a quarter into the boom it’s very similar, but I have heard the end is different if you didn’t like the book you may not like it
I liked “Old”……my favorite since Unbreakable
I don't read horror--and I never have! It hits my buttons in a more real way than movies.
And I'm eager to see this movie. In general, I've liked cabin movies in the past but it's been a while so bring it on!
I read this just a few months ago- great story but l HATED THE ENDING!
Same here. Hope the movie is different.
Got to see it last night & think it's a very interesting, well made movie.
Never been a M. Night fan at all but enjoyed it very much. Excellent acting & didn't depend on an insipid 'twist' at the end.
The first of his movies to make me want to go back to the cinema & watch again. Will buy the Blu-ray too. Always bought a ticket for his movies due to the hype but walked out disappointed.
Didn't know he had it in him.
On the fence about this one. Will check it out now. Thank you for your review!
I don’t have much faith in M. Night these days but am planni g to see this to give it a chanse and will probably do so sooner than later now after your positive review 👍
I feel like the second trailer gave away too much... I hope that's not the case... I'm so stoked for this
This seems interesting. I think I'll check it out.
Just saw it last night and I enjoyed it. I can understand the mixed reviews but I like that it leaves you with so many questions.
So excited to see this movie
Haven't seen the movie yet. My favorite horror movie was malignant but then I watched Megan. I like Megan more.
Love the book!! Would love to hear your thoughts after you read it!
Great 😎
M night is such a hit or miss but defo gonna watch still
I heard that MNS had a new movie coming out but didn't give it a 2nd thought until I saw a trailer and realized it was based on one of my favorite horror book of all time! And it's not even his best book! Look out for the adaptation of "A head full of ghosts" (along with Pet semetary, the best horror I've read) which may or may not be on its way (depending on which obscure website you decide to trust). This is good news, Trembley need more readers!
Head full of ghosts is my fav too! We have similar tastes!
Just got home about 30 minutes ago from seeing the movie. I've read and really enjoyed the book. The first 50% of the movie was fantastic, and is so close to the book. I was so happy. Then the second half changed everything, and I was completely disappointed. I think if you loved the book you probably won't enjoy the movie, and if you disliked the book you will probably like the movie more.
It made me sleepy.
ON TOPIC: I love The Invitation more than most people. Loved it!
Me too! Just rewatched it last weekend and that final scene still gives me chills even though I know it's coming.
@@universalsoldier2293 New buddy! The whole thing is so effing unnerving and emotional.
I just want you to know I watch your reviews for every horror movie before I watch and you always give an honest great review ❤
Thank you so much !
Emma gives the best reviews. I love cinema but Emma is the one who got me to take horror seriously as a film fan (the Dario Argento watch along got me hooked). I like surreal, psychological horror I don’t care about gore one way or the other but even if our taste differs slightly, her reviews are so good at signaling what kind of experience a film provides. In Emma I trust.
I'm so excited for this film.
Where’s Infinity Pool?! I think you’re going to love that one!
It’s not out here unfortunately
@@spookyastronauts That is unfortunate. I just looked for an AUS release date and I can’t find anything.
ps: Can you do an in depth breakdown of "Infinity Pool" after you watch it. It put me in such a bummer mood, though a lot of it was dark humor, but I don't know....
I don’t know when I’m able to even see it unfortunately
@spookyastronauts Well when you do.... Think of me. I am still thinking about it, but damned if I know what to think!
I’m glad to know going into this it is going to be ambiguous. I always take ambiguity better if I know that going in. Ha. I’d have expected answers with Shyamalan’s history of third act twists. I will definitely see it now after your review, I was on the fence just being M. Night Shyamalan. I am really surprised at the comparison to The Invitation. I loved that film. A lot more excited with that. I hope I don’t expect too much with that comparison, ha. The Menu kind of reminded me of The Invitation, as well! And I’d love a book review/comparison if you read the book.
The book is really good, from the way you describe it, it sounds like M.Night nailed the atmosphere. I hope you'll do a book review or comparison as well.
Daddy Dave was framed quite nice 🫠👍🏽 also. The “who we are as a person” commentary 👌🏽
I saw the film today and enjoyed it. The acting is great, and M. Night knows how to create amazing colors and cinematography. The ending seemed a bit average, for all the tension we saw throughout the film. Then again, I maybe was expecting too much of a Shyamalan twist.
Two minor thoughts ahead, so possibly minor spoilers:

I had to double check my facts after seeing the film, but I found it interesting that the four strangers were wearing color shirts that matched the horse colors of the Four Horsemen: White (Leonard), Red (Redman), Black (Abby) and Yellowish-Green (aka Pale for Sabrina).
Do you think that M. Night's cameo was a callback to "Lady In The Water" and his character's book The Cookbook? After all, his cameo was on a cooking show.
As always, great review. I read the book when it was released a few years ago when it was released, and I felt the same tension you described in watching the film. Excited to see this!
Hope you like it! I just finished the book they have very different end quarters !
@@spookyastronauts I’m excited to see!
Very happy to hear your positive thoughts. I’m a big Shymalan fan (yep even Old). I think the only movie of his that I haven’t enjoyed is ‘The Happening’.
Please don’t send hate comments to me but I have to say people are very hard on M Knight. I know all his movies are not steeler but I give him so much credit for writing, directing, producing and staring in movies…. I look forward to seeing it.
The book is so much fun! I think you’ll enjoy it!
I'm curious to learn why this cult believes the family is so 'adequate' for sacrifice... Really curious...
Thank You for the Review and Video 😀
