Can you make a video of spotting squirrels hiding in a tree? I often hunt squirrels, but if they sit still in a tree, they disappear. That's what I need a thermal spotter for. Everybody shows footage of sheep or deer in an open field, but I haven't seen anyone spotting heat sources in a tree.

Chances are you are going to be near to the tree so I would think it would not be much problem.

If you need even more of an advantage to kill a squirrel, just give up on life.

They keep getting taken down from what I have observed....
Makes you wonder whats really hiding in the SKY or TREES... People are gonna be shocked when they find out whats going on.

Hi, spotting squirrels in a tree is very easy to do with a thermal. I have a pulsar scope that's only a 320 Micro and I can see squirrels in trees at a couple hundred yards or more,

Today I received the Scout III 640.
    .
Tried it during the day which seemed like a waste of time because nothing looked in focus after about 75 yards. I knew where a squirrel was in the tree about 30 yards away but it never showed up on the screen.
MAYBE with constant use I might find little tricks.
    .
Went out tonight to try it out in the dark and HOLY SHIT is this fantastic.
They tell you that you can see for 1200 yards is a CYA on their part.
It is more like a good 3/4 mile or better with this unit. I haven't been able to see a human or an wildlife in the dark with this yet though.
Checked out my roof when I was about 1/2 mile away at the water tower and could see two spots that I have to check out for heat loss that were very obvious. BTW Our tri-level house is only 20 years old! Ugg!
    .
OK Now for things I didn't like:
    .
They give you a cheap lanyard to use as something to hold around your wrist. A $3K unit is NOT going to drop while in MY possession because of a $0.10 lanyard. I put on a heavy duty one.
What would be better would be a strap on the side (switchable for a lefty) like they have on some cameras that is really solid. Again, we are talking about a $3K unit not some cheap $50.00 toy.
    .
Next They have a "Utility light" just above the front lens.
NOWHERE in the instructions does it mention how to turn it on/off.
    .
Next I get a vertical area on the far left of the screen that constantly shows heat. (my hand is on the right side)
    .
Next when looking at the screen with the white you can actually see vertical lines; some heavier than others. These are not like pixelation lines because they are not all that easy to see and it does not destroy the view.
    .
I can see where the front cap may come off easily or worse break. It is a one piece very inexpensive rubber cap with a small band that incorporates a o-ring that fits around the lens.

They make these so far Dumbed Down it isn’t funny. Makes you wonder why....?
What are they trying to hide by making these so expensive for no reason.
I have an older Military one that blows these away. Its like they dont want the general public to have these.
But why not? Point yours in the SKY. You’ll quickly see why they don’t want everyone to have them....

I finally ditched this because of the support from the company I purchased it from. (NOW is 3 years later & I don't remember the company) I wound up purchasing the Pro PTS 233 rifle scope. When not in use I just take it off and use it as a hand held.

Luke B I’m just getting into coyote hunting since they started breaking into the rabbit cages . I picked up the LTO Tracker HD. It’s pretty cool for spotting.

NO it does NOT record on its own. You can attach a cable from the Scout TO a recorder for video OR still shots but it is not incorporated in the unit.

  • @blkcpdconure

What is the operating lifespan on this monocular? Will the sensor wear out after a lot of use like a pvs14 will? I don’t have an immediate need for a thermal so saving for a year or more isn’t a big deal. I really like the looks of the 640 but with a high price I want to make certain it will last a long time.

    • @blkcpdconure

Never mind then. I was in the market when I posted those questions. I ended up buying one from a different company that didn’t ignore me.

@Sea Bass I got a Scout III 640 from TNVC. Videos don't do it justice. It's so cool to be looking into a treeline on a very dark night and see deer moving around just inside it. I highly recommend it!

I had a Seek Thermal for awhile before I sent it back. I could see where the honeybees were balled up inside the wooden hives. I couldn't see images of deer at 20-yards, just their hotspots.

Extremely disappointed, My $3,000.00 Flir 111 640 is 5 years old. It will no longer turn on, probably needs the battery replaced I would imagine. I contacted FLIR support and found out they have a flat rate repair and service policy of $350.00. Thats a lot of money for a new battery. What a rip off, stay away from FLIR
