      If you want to be pedantic, it's running at the same clock, even if the commutation is faster. I'm not sure what you mean by "not really overvolting" If you want it to go faster than you will by turning the governor off, that's generally how you're going to have to do it, since the no-load speed is probably around 40km/h range.

      it's not the seat vs frame you need to worry about its the fact the wheels are crap and rated for less then the frame.

    • @Resengan21
      @Resengan21 8 років тому +20

      It's 300 pounds total. The top can take 120 and the two sides can both take 90, equaling 300 total pounds.

    • @selurusey
      @selurusey 7 років тому +1

      That's a rational answer but looking at the construction of the sides I wonder if even 90 lbs can be safely put on it.

      See, there's this thing about Linus Tech Tips.
      For one, it's based on technical calamities. I think they script most of them.
      For other, it's... THESE kinds of people. They just use things, they don't maintain them, they don't care how they work. He didn't notice that his spokes weren't tightened either! He needed a bike technician to fix it instead of doing it himself. The one time i needed to go to bike repair is when i got a bike with a broken Sachs Super7 hub gearbox - he had extra clutch catches, and i obviously didn't. The other time is when i need something adjusted and i'm 20km away from home and tools but a bike technician is only 1km away. There was even this video from LTT where it comes out, that NOBODY on the LTT video team knows how to assemble a computer! Luke and Linus have to maintain everyone's computers, or call in a tech from the outside. That is so... alienating to me. If you're gonna spend your life doing something on a computer professionally, you have to know at least SOMETHING about them, especially if your job is to tell the world about them, right?
      NB: if your bike comes from a moronic chop shop and has a hub gearbox, make sure the lid on the gearbox is tightened PROPERLY and the axis is well aligned. Else the clutch damage might be the least of your problems.

    • @Helveteshit
      @Helveteshit 8 років тому

      The main purpose of electrical bikes is not so you do not peddle. It is for the fact to help uphills and what not, it is a great choice for older people that do not have the same desire to Trample at gear 1 to get uphill or potentially jump off the bike due the steep nature of the hill.
      As for losing Weight on bicycle? Questionable in my opinion and I biked for most of my life considering I live in a bike friendly city. You get more from normal running if you want to improve your health. Bikes are a mean of transportation in the end, not something aimed to be an tool for training. That part came secondary.
      Then again, maybe I misread your last "Good Luck " part of the comment.
      My mother uses an E-bike to work on good days. And it helps her a lot with uphills and such and makes it a lot easier for her legs and she is at the age of 60+ at the moment. So ye, it is a great tool for your parents if they fancy changing out the car for trips.

    • @VicodinElmo
      @VicodinElmo 8 років тому

      +Helveteshit I lost a fair bit of weight when I used to cycle but I was heavily focused on a good diet too so that's probably a significant factor. Always HATED running haha. The biggest benefit for me was the improved cardiovascular health. I was a lot more energetic and felt like I had energy to burn almost all the time once I got into the swing of it. Miss that feeling.

    • @Helveteshit
      @Helveteshit 8 років тому

      Lucas Williams
      Well, it is Questionable as a training exercise. Since running performs a lot better in that perspective. More muscle movement, more fuel burning and that in comparison. But sure, it can work as a light exercise but it is nothing I would consider an Exercise of 'training value'. Bit hard to describe but essentially, Training to me, requires more effort than bicycling exhibits.
      But it is still an exercise in some form, I mean they still have those old Gym cycle bikes. But I reckon, running on a track for half an hour produces more result than bicycling for an hour. Mainly due the fact you move more muscles while running. You use the calves, thighs, feet, the arms, the upper body. And you need to exercise breathing technique and pacing.
      Ah well! But yes, eating correctly is generally the greatest benefactor for weight loss, but also eating a bit less than usual if you do not really use your energy. I tend to go by the philosophy, " Don't eat more than you Use. ". And it works for me, then again. My genes are quite slim so perhaps I am not the best material reference.

      not loud at all, one of the quietest motorcycles. And why are you talking about exercise when clearly what most people want is practicality and reliability as a commuter (if you wan't exercise, ride a real bike that is much cheaper). I'm not saying the bike isn't cool, but for less money you could get something more practical and more fun (subject to opinion)

      Well, since this is a >cargo< bike - how many groceries or 2x4 planks can you transport with it? I also own a Honda 125cc bike (CBR JC39) and IMO the most cargo it can handle without a bagpack are ~ 2 McDonalds Cheeseburgers in the compartment below the back seat (+ one additional behind the windscreen)

    • @markman090
      @markman090 8 років тому +9

      You can buy saddle bags for it, but yes it doesn't have good storage. If you are planning to haul planks, show me someone whose first thought is to jump on an electric bicycle.

    • @pered5
      @pered5 8 років тому +1

      You mean if the weather is nice, the bike is charged, you're only getting 2 bags of groceries or less or you've forked out for carrying bags strapped to the e-bike, you live in an area where a 1600$ bike won't get stolen the second you leave it outside your store, lock or no (bolt cutters do wonders) and you're in the mood for it. Then you'd take this thing over a car, well, good for you.

    I have the same motor and battery but mine is 1000 watt and I can verify the performance 100%, it pulls me and all my heavy shopping up ANY hill, most without even pedaling.
    My bike has changed my life, I couldn't afford a car now that I am retired but I now would far rather travel by e-bike it is just so convenient and you get the fresh air. Apart from motorists trying their best to kill you it is just amazing. Try to get this battery and motor set u, it charges fast and is a pleasure to drive, My bike has a code you can enter on the little handlebar computer that drops the power to 250 watt {legal in the UK} but enter the code again and it releases the full 1000 watt to have some fun off road, I never drop the power lol

      was wondering about the sudden weight limit change. was wondering if it is related to shifting mass and its effect on the bearings and such. I stripped out the bearings on my last bike just riding it around. I was well over its weight limit though. It took awhile even so.
      Luggage is going to shift rarely and only slight in comparison to another rider. Especially over bumps. As the rider might leave the seat and come back down a little hard,for bike tolerances at least. (reminds me of all those info things about running applying several times your weight to the knees and such.)

Their content is lazily made on topics chosen for the only reason that they are easy to make and will get a ton of views. Taran, your videos may not get as many views (I'm sorry but in the tech community a phone will always beat out a bike) but they are packed with information and easy to understand at the same time. I don't hate Linus and Luke, it just seems they are loosing the original meaning of LTT and just need to come back to that.

    This company knows bikes like no other and will get my Radrover fat tire bike to-day (Dec 18 2016) You can buy motors and most accessories online. As far as hydraulic brakes go there are manufactures that make bikes with them or one can always add them later. Maintenance is an important part of owning anything including bikes,cars,airplanes and all mechanical things. Read and learn and a person can have a lot of fun. Pounds are used in the USA and kilos are used in Europe, use a conversion chart found on the internet. After a ride on any bike one should go over the spokes after some miles and keep your bike in tune and it is fun. Enjoy ridding and have a great bike day!

    It's funny because I watched this video 2 months ago and it opened up so many possibilities to me. I checked the pricing for pre-built ebikes and found that they were a bit too pricey for an initial ebike, especially compared to building one yourself - so that's what I did. I now have 300km logged over the last 15 days on my 48V, 13.5Ah (648WH) battery with a 500W motor and IT'S AMAZINGLY USEFUL (London, Ontario is fricken hilly)!
    I find myself using it 95% of the time I leave the house and my car sits behind. The only time I've used my car in the last 15 days was to pick up some pieces of wood from Home Depot. If this keeps up, I might as well just own a bike (except for the winters... still have to figure that one out).

Still likely a very good bang for the buck, as long as the production quality doesn't vary too much between the bikes (like that seat breaking off is a no-go imo, it can pop out but nothing should break), which is a common problem with products that are very good for their price-range.

    My disabled brother-in-law bought one. I've been bicycling for 57 years. This bike is well built and has some cool accessories. This is also the biggest waste of money for an e-bike. They won't sell you tires or inner tubes and the ones that come on the bike are cheap. Most bikes sold don't come with "the best" tires and tubes. Rad Power Bikes have tubes and tires in stock but are keeping them for new bike sales. It's now an almost $2,000 paper weight. The 22x3 tires are only used by Rad. No one else makes them or the tubes. They sell an equally bad "armored liner" meant as an adapter so you can use 22x1.75 tubes in the 22x3 tires. Why is there not a class action suit against them?

      I don't know what you find so scary. If you were to go to a store and buy a new powered bicycle, you'll pay at least 1000€. They are all electric these days. Add a couple hundred for a fully custom, high weight bearing frame, and you'll be at the price of this one, and you're still not getting comparable power. If anything, this vehicle is sensibly priced, if not universally sensible. Also consider that this is a license free US/Canada vehicle, things are different here in the EU, it would never get a permission here.
      The only EU-permitted gasoline powered helper motor pedal bicycle that i know of would be the Hercules/Saxonette, and those have been out of production for a while. If you buy a used one, you'll still pay about 200-300€. You still need a driver's license for this one in EU though, unless you are over 40 years old! And it still needs insurance!
      Do you do the coffee spitting dance when Peugeot or Volkswagen announces a 9900€ car, because you could buy a 20 year old one for 600€? Well i don't think so.

      But what if you're a courier and need it to hold some cargo? Pretty sure a Schwinn with a lawnmower engine ain't gonna hold a lot of weight. But what do I know?

    Just bought a Felt Tote'm that is on sale for $2,500. Built like a tank. Awesome hardware and included bags are amazing. My main concern is reliability. Using it to commute requires it works all the time. I have heard from many that the cheaper Chinese motors and controllers are prone to frequent failures. Great review.

      true but not everyone wants a motorcycle just like not everyone wants a car, hell there are even people that prefer walking over anything else. Just because you like motorcycles doesn't mean you're right it just means you probably want a motorcycle over an e-bike.

      You don’t have to pay registration for e-bikes, it also costs way less to charge than even a motor bike costs to refuel mile-by-mile, and plus, even If you run out of charge you can still get yourself to wherever you need to go... it’s a bike.

    1600 for a bike when u can pay 500 for a moped?

    • @DanielRichards644
      @DanielRichards644 8 років тому +16

      and have to get a license and have to have insurance (depending on where you are and the size of the motor in the moped), remember it's not just PURCHASE PRICE when you are buying a method of transportation, it's the cost to operate it over the life span of the vehicle.

    • @timppa01gameboy
      @timppa01gameboy 8 років тому

      +DanielRichards644 licence is another 500 so its still cheaper and a faster option than this bike

    • @DanielRichards644
      @DanielRichards644 8 років тому +4

      *****
      what about the ongoing cost of insurance? You know whats also a faster option, a CAR, it also costs more in the long run. I'm not saying this bike is a good thing (infact it sounds like it suffers from server quality control issues), so I I wouldn't recommend it to anyone based on this video, im just saying you have to look at ALL the angles and the total cost of ownership, also it's electric so it's much cheaper to recharge then to put gas in a moped so that further closes the price gap.

    looking at the physics, the mass of the vehicle will cancel out and only friction will be the major difference. the additional air resistance and friction on the tires. so the mileage wot be to greatly affected by weight assuming you keep a constant speed on a level surface.

    Nice video. I am just now exploring options for ebikes now. I've been riding bikes for commuting purposes since 1992 and am looking at electric assist for those cargo days or days I don't feel 100%. Most of my daily commutes are less than 15 miles each way on flat terrain so something like this would work.
