Check the album Human. Changed the landscape of death metal at the time. Brought intelligence to the genre.
Brought jazz to a genre that never needed it. An incredibly boring album.
You're talking about the drum beat Lex doesn't like. Maybe check out something from Human. It featured Sean Reinert who I've seen credited with revolutionizing the death metal drum game.
I would love to see you try something from their later albums, I'd suggest DEATH - Trapped in a Corner (technical yet organic and groovy)
cheers!
That's what is called the blast beat, my friend! Welcome to death metal! Enjoy! And, as I'm sure you've learned already, this album was released in 1990. And I think that the deeper down the rabbit hole you go with this band, the more you witness their evolution album by album, you'll be hooked, for sure.
Yes someone in the comments told me it was a 1990's album. Spotify never get the year right haha. Yes I am starting to get into it haha. I played some to Lex and she was still resisting
@@NicknLex this is from their third album, out of seven. She'll love "Voice of the Soul", an instrumental from their seventh album. Much more her speed. Ironically, they also do a cover of "Painkiller" on that album.
@@NicknLex You probably chose the 2012 "Deluxe version" but yeah, Spotify's not getting it right always (in this case they do also have the original by the right year though)
@@NicknLex If you want a generally more accurate release date, try Wikipedia.
It's more like thrash beat. Death never played a single blast beat which is generally double time or more of a thrash beat.
This is legitimately heavy.
If she's not into this stuff, it's totally fine. I enjoyed this a lot cuz you were enjoying it.
Chuck was genius RIP
Death is good stuff. One of the few heavy bands I listen to, although I prefer their later, more progressive stuff.
I've really been into Archspire lately. Their newest album is great. I highly suggest checking it out. Abandon the Linear might be my favorite on the album. If you decide to, make sure you search for a lyric video as they are quite impressive.
Would love a revisit of Death sometime! They have an incredible discography, especially from Human onward. I think you would like a lot of stuff off of the albums "The Sound of Perseverance" and "Symbolic", considering you're somewhat of a prog guy. Specific songs I can recommend are "Scavenger of Human Sorrow", "Without Judgement", "Symbolic" and "Flesh and the Power it Holds". All incredible.
I love Death! But as a fellow prog fan I think you chose the wrong album as your introduction to the band. I think Individual Thought Patterns is their most melodic and progressive album and something like "Trapped in a Corner" would've been a much better fit. It also has a dream line-up with Gene Hoglan on drums, Andy LaRocque on lead guitar and Steve DiGiorgio on fretless bass. But make sure it's the original mix and not the remixed version... I'd also highly suggest to check out Cynic and their album Focus from 1993 (the track "I'm But a Wave to..." was my introduction to the band and it blew me away). It's super jazzy and experimental death metal and was way ahead of it's time.
Where to begin. As mentioned, this album actually came out in '90 and the remaster is the 2012 version. This is in my opinion the least interesting song on the album save the harmonizing arpeggios in one of the bridges/breakdowns. I would try out "Within The Mind" which is the best song on it, and perhaps "Low Life" as well which has some killer drum fills between phrases. But really, you'll need to check out every single song on "Sound of Perseverance," which really demonstrates Chuck's genius. And the drumming by Richard Christy is just nuts. You'd mention Judas Priest and Painkiller - that album also has a brutal, crushing version of that song. This is a really enriching path to explore - I'm happy to see you getting into it.
Hey, this album was released in 1990 :)
James Murphy / Chuck Schuldiner lead battles on this album are on another level! 🙌 Great reaction! Greetings & keep it up! 🤘
Saludos!
@@evil_chuck ah con razón sonaba más de los 90tas. Spotify nunca avisan esas cosas. Gracias por aclararme eso.
@@NicknLex no hay problema! Siempre es un placer ayudar.
@@NicknLex Wow, forgot to mention that Chuck was the guitarist (along with each guitarist that has been in his band), "vocalist" and lyricist/composer. Gracias Señor Anderson \m/.
Death was the next step after Opeth for me in terms of getting deeper into metal, and they quickly became one of my absolute favourite bands after I discovered them! Once you get used to the harsh vocals it’s quite the rabbit hole, there is a lot of great stuff in the underground.
This album was actually released in 1990, not 2012. Must be a remaster on Spotify that’s listed under the re-release date. It’s a bit of a transitional album for the band, bringing in a little more technicality compared to their first 2 albums but with the next one, “Human”, they went in an all-out Technical/Progressive direction and continued to get even more Progressive after that. Since you’re a big Prog fan I think you’d especially enjoy anything from those last 4 albums, or even Chuck Schuldiner’s (founder/songwriter/guitarist/vocalist) other project Control Denied, which is more Prog/Power Metal. However, every Death song is great in my opinion!
Super cool to see you enjoying this stuff, looking forward to seeing some more metal on the channel as well as all the classics of course!
P.S. cool to hear you mention Sodom, Persecution Mania and Agent Orange are some of the best Thrash albums ever made!
Thanks Nick 🤘🤘
Death is one of the most important metal bands of all time, they're considered the godfathers of death metal, but one of the reasons they were so influential is that every album they released had a very significant musical evolution, their first album is very influential to early death metal but their later albums are actually influential in the prog metal scene as well because they were much more complex and technical, this song is great but it is a bit more on their simple side, I suggest the song Flesh and the Power It Holds from their final album, that's one of their most progressive songs.
Saludos desde México!
Thanks so much for the info. I really enjoyed this band and will surely do more. Un saludo de regreso hermano. Gracias !!!
Well said Ely G \m/.
@Dragon Ball fans can't read Possesed, Hellhammer and Sepultura were definitely very influential, but musically they were closer to thrash than death metal imo, it's debatable though.
Morbid Angel's debut was in 1989, and Master's debut was in 1990 while Death's debut was in 1987.
As for prog, I never said that they're the only death metal band that influenced the prog scene, Morbid Angel was very influential to Opeth for example.
@@fafolaw It still amazes me that "Larry LaLonde" the guitarist from *Primus* was in Possessed.
@Dragon Ball fans can't read Some of those _earlier_ "Technical" bands can be found here: ua-cam.com/play/PL2DU3TBNutEdtiYql5HxhzIxzuFIPcXS9.html
(keep in mind the 1st few tracks were those that may have been huge influences on many, not all, Metal bands)

Not a bad hit for a random recommendation.
your speakers are going to blow up , and my girlfriend is going to crush my balls with this one haha, wich I love it , but she went to sleep , and told me to be mellow wich i did not haha, this song is so well done, Chuck Shuldiner was a hell of a player/singer, so this is the best of the best of 90s death metal
my comment was weird, I don like my girlfriend crushing my balls 😂😂😂 Im a Death Metal fan she likes Coldplay and stuff... you know what I mean..... 😅
😂!!! Definitely made me LOL!
9:48 I can’t let you get close
Intro audio sounds amazing !
Sodom rules, this drummer has that early style, but with a interesting take on rhythmic bridges.
You should react to Agent Orange by Sodom or more Spiritual Healing álbum by Death 🤟🤟🤟🤟🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
This is probably a bit too heavy for my taste. Never mind, you guys are still giving me lots of music to delve into! Keep up the good work.
You are a lucky fellow. None of my ladies would have stayed with me had they known this resonated with me. Alas, they didn't anyway. They would assume I also liked Professional Wrestling and head nails. By violating the understatement principle in a very loud way it lacks taste or class. Probably intended to be that way, so it is a success. Granted, the Floridians can play very fast, and yell in the manner you might expect from Florida, but this is WWF soundtrack stuff which should be out of one's system by college time. Granted, violence sells, and my tongue is a tad cheeky. Apologia.
If you simply changed your policy about listening to other reactors, you would find calmer streams of music that both of you can enjoy and also share, so long as you stop before you get to the end, which takes muscle control. Jim, Doug, Justin, Pope, Dean, Heep, Jayvee, Jamal, Dicon, Harri, BroAction, Asia, BJ, Nick, KSO, Wilburn, RobSquad are finding the best music, which coincides with the decade from '65 to '75 and are loving it and sharing it. All good peace-loving connoisseurs.
Your joint ventures bring more joy, imo, and I'd hate to lose it. Moreover I am dying to hear what Steely Dan played. You are torturing us with anticipation. :) Welcome back, glad you made it safely in the snow. Now tell us.

You should try some Progressive Death Metal from Sweden:
#nicknlexrequests EDGE OF SANITY - ENIGMA
I am interested in if Lex would like Power Metal. Helloween is a band from Hamburg, Germany.
#nicknlexrequests HELLOWEEN - SKYFALL album version from 2021.
I think Lex might appreciate Extol when she understands how melodic it is ..
Plus the clean harmonies of Ole Borud are something to witness!
Sepultura: "Roots bloody roots"
Death in a way were pioneers of this subgenre. RIP Chuck Schuldiner. Also, this is not the best Death track to start with.
*Blast-Beat Monstrosity!!! YaaaAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRrrrrrrr!!! . . .*
This was my 2nd exposure to Death, the earlier was the previous albums which were MUCH more "raw" and straight ahead Death Metal for its time (even though "Death" were one of the earlier Death Metal bands), that I heard on a local college radio program on Fridays called "Infernal Rage". Would be the 1st time to learn of Thrash and Death Metal coming from various European countries and even South America (circa the late 80's early 90's)! It didn't make that much of an impression on me, even being a Metalhead, I wanted something "unique" in my Metal, no matter the subgenre (which were beginning to grow).
When I heard this, I was still thinking the same, but I could tell their "chops" were getting better and I was getting _into_ the lyrics of what he (Chuck) had to say. Chuck Schuldiner was getting tired of many Death Metal bands singing about extreme "Gore", and he wanted to take the genre into new territory. It started with this album, more topical, social subjects
But by the time they get to the next album "Human" (1991), it is a WHOLE 'nuther animal all together! Super fast, aggressive and VERY technical for its time, they had re-invented Death Metal all due to Chuck's vision. At _that_ time, it was TOO fast and heavy for me :p. But the next album, that I would re-discover a few years after it's debuted, totally changed my mind about them; "Individual Thought Patterns" (1993), this was fking amazing, and it took time to learn the brilliance and forward thinking/pushing the envelope of Human (and "who" were the members of the band, becoming a HUGE *Cynic* fan, even though back then, they only had 1 album to their credit, that also changed Death Metal forever). For me, they were up there with *Watchtower,* and I began my quest to find more bands of this caliber at that time (lots of bands that even modern Technical Metal fans don't know about). Progressive Rock, Metal of all sorts, and what would become Prog Metal would be my world.
*A Must . . .*
Again, you'll have to watch (with Lexi) the Documentary DVD; "Death: Death by Metal", to hear Chuck's personality, his vision and how demanding he was to his band members (and he was a bit flakey and moody), but he was super approachable and friendly to his fans. He was a true musician and composer taking Metal to new territory, and inspiring MANY bands and musicians world wide.
To put a piece of the music in perspective, here is a tribute to "Sean Reinert" and what he contributed as a musician and Death on "1" album; "Human" (and "Cynic"). How HE changed the course of extreme Metal drumming, and what "influenced" him. And those who were inspired and influenced by him. He died "1 week" after Neil Peart's passing :(
(Links are deleting my comment. Please look-up "Sean Reinert Tribute - drumtalk [special]" - I'll see if the links will remain in the reply).
Its great after you "strayed the path" because of various circumstances, you now have an opportunity to discover your Metal side again, and its history and branches. WE have soo much to recommend (and _with_ Lexi) that it will be lots of fun to watch you and re-live those particular moments when these bands changed our lives as listeners, and the course of Metal music, what went into it and where it was headed.
May those "3" albums (Human, Individual Thought Patterns, Symbolic, and Chucks foray into _Prog Metal;_ *Control Denied* ) bring hours and hours of awe and amazement. Folks will chime-in saying "The Sound of Perseverance" album too, and will suggest their many great tracks.
- Thanks Nick; "Let the Metal Flow!" and I hope Lexi gets well soon \m/💗\m/.
Uggh! Unfortunately the "links" won't stay from my _other_ accounts either 🤯
But please checkout the tribute to Sean Reinert from Drumtalk and his peers (and the Documentary on Chuck/Death).

I agree with every single word. Cheers from Poland!
