I just wanted to say thanks for the tips! I went to see one or two live orchestras many years ago, but that was way before I started composing. So I'm sure if I go to one now, it will be with a different set of ears. Thanks! For anyone reading this, when you study scores, it's helpful to create a text document where you divide the score up in sections (intro, bridge, motif A, motif B, motif C, stinger, climax, outro,...). Then, under each section, write down what instruments you hear, what is happening, how it makes you feel, the energy level, perhaps the duration, and some other remarks you may have about the piece. This can be used as a roadmap for when you're stuck in your compositions, and you learn what instruments and arrangements convey what type of feeling and so on.

Great tips on approaches for studying orchestration., asking an instrumentalist about their instrument can be a very informative way of learning from an expert. A creative way to gain practical experience is to orchestrate the same musical passage 3 different ways, - - with a small ensemble arrange, a full orchestral version and an arrangement for a mid sized band. This is an excellent way to compare instrumentation techniques and sounds.
