Hi this comment is important to address a few things that I felt were unclear in the video, so be sure to read it. First off, Mountain of Faith only has the sound effect for Graze, not the visual effect. I just assumed with one there, the other would be as well, because why wouldn't it? Second with Mountain of Faith's Difficulty. It feels weird learning of the Sakuya/Youmou fight was almost a thing AFTER seeing MinusT teasing it as the next part of their Imperishable Nights animations.
If I'm not mistaken, the Twilight Frontier devs wanted Momiji to appear in SWR as Aya's partner in one of her spellcards but was scrapped due to ZUN revealing about the feud between Aya and Momiji.
Yeah. Even now apparently people use the term "AyaMomi shock" to describe when ZUN goes in a completely different direction from the fandom. Other examples include Satori giving herself an 11/10 as opposed to being a self-loathing moe type, and Flandre actually being very sane and smart in Detective Satori (all her immature insanity is pretty much kayfabe)
Technically almost all spinoff-introduced characters are Waluigi, considering how rare it is for characters to return in mainline games(even if they arguably should, instead of adding characters that didn't need to exist otherwise)
It sounds like the ground fighter rosters were based more on the desires of the dev team, and then the air fighter rosters were based more on what ZUN wanted. Certainly explains why the 13.5 roster is so weird.
Still amazed that the ending to the "Moriya Shrine Conspiracy" had the Moriya Shrine effectively just sitting there eating chips the whole time (well, okay they were working on the ropeway, but still)
So Shion is effectively the Waluigi of Touhou. Brought in to compliment a main character and becoming a fan(?) favorite Fun little factoids, I'm salty Clownpiece didn't make it into to AoCF though
It's fascinating just how much more you can learn about this series even after what already seems like mountains of information. Thanks for compiling all of these neat tidbits for us trivia enthusiasts.
I don't know how true this is, but apparently in Urban Legend in Limbo, there's a folder named "Hanako" with three silhouetted sprites of Sumireko, possibly an earlier name for her? 25:03 also, rude
I absolutely love your content! Well thought out, interesting, and entertaining. So much of my Touhou UA-cam feed is just memes, gameplay, or music. (Not throwing shade at those. I enjoy them too.) But I feel Touhou is missing the long essay styled content. And your videos really scratch that itch. Keep up the great work!
One more unused music from PCB 08. 過去の花 ~ Fairy of Flower (04:57) Flower of Past Days ~ Fairy of Flower original title: 過去の花 ~ Fairy of Flower source: 東方妖々夢 ~ Perfect Cherry Blossom (Unused Track) From Ghostly Field Club. "ZUN included an unused track in Ghostly Field Club titled Flower of Past Days ~ Fairy of Flower, possibly meant for Stage 4."
I think the unused EoSD midboss at 7:15 might be Rumia wearing a crown of thorns, which would fit with her holding her arms out to look like a crucified saint.
I hope that Kaguya will be playable in a fighting game one day! Also it would be cool if Zun will include Rin Satsuki in a future game! I wonder how she would've looked in Touhou 6. Anyway, I didn't know about much of the stuff from this video. You did a good job!
Actually Eika's name was also Eika in the trial (omake), it was just Youka in the top right text which was probably a typo (the first kanji used in her first name can be read "ei" or "you"). Also I'm glad you brought up that the Circle Cut girl wasn't actually "Rin Satsuki". Rin was supposed to be a kirin and kirins are like dragon horses with unicorn horns. We are constantly robbed of cool fan art interpretations of what she could actually look like by the Circle Cut girl lmao.
So the little tease at the end of minust’s new animation could have been a real part of IN and not just something that will be neat to see in a fanwork. Really subtle attention to detail there
I think I have a slight ideas what the "count" means. It's basically the code for checking how many valid difficulties are there. Terraria's code does this a lot especially with items, projectiles and npcs.
I LOVE the trial versions of "The Fantastic Tales of Tono" and "The Doll Maker of Bucuresti". The lower pitch somehow makes it more emotional and nostalgic to me.
20:56 About that, the same happens with Okina's second spell in stage 6, she moves after 10,000 waves lmao The unused portraits start to become really common after touhou 14, for example, Junko and Saki have an angry expression that they never use. The explanation about Sagume being only testing the player might be plausible, but not the lengthy dialogue, mostly after having seen ExOkina's defeat dialogue, and the fact ZUN made it possible to put different expressions on the defeated portraits from th17 onwards. 26:16 This reminds me people mentioned that a "Disable" text is unused in the touhou 16 UI, they believe it was supposed to be used during the Okina final 26:00 *sigh* so he DID plan for the roar break button to be mappable somewhere else!
Another aspect of semi-unused content- there's a chiptune remix of candid friend in HM's files and spotify ost release, but not in the actual game. It's pretty nice!
Not so much "cut content" but more of a bug... There was the "shoplifting glitch" in the first demo of Unconnected Marketeers, where you could reload the shop screen by pausing, even after choosing an item. Repeatedly. So you could stock up on gold and buy multiple support cards and be grossly overpowered (and pray the game didn't crash)
UFO has another more interesting demo difference, the PIV system was overhauled after the original demo. Some of the differences between 0.01 and the final game are: -Lunatic started with 50,000 PIV in 0.01 instead of 20,000 in the final game (all other difficulties are the same in both versions) -Collecting any token at any time in 0.01 increased PIV by 250 instead of the 1,000 PIV increase only when collected during an active summon in the final game -Bullets couldn't be grazed immediately when spawned in 0.01, they could in the final game These changes ended up completely changing UFO's score routing, a lot of the big grazes wouldn't be possible, and throwing away tokens would be almost completely worthless so the game would be more about using all the tokens to spawn *something* all the time instead of the fewer, bigger summons we do see in score runs, it wouldn't at all have been the same game for scoring if it had kept the original PIV system.
I definitely didn't notice the intricacies of the scoring difference, and this was a version that I wasn't able to play myself, unlike with PCB. I'm also more familiar with PCB mechanics in general so I noticed them, even if they're way more obvious to a casual than UFOs. The only footage I could find of 0.01 is what I used, I'm just thankful they grabbed an extra life at all so I could show it, because they redid their whole playthrough for the 3rd stage
A little bit of a "sort of" unused thing in MOF. In Touhou 6-8, there is a system called "rank" (most of you probably know this) that affects the difficulty of bullet patterns, and it was removed in MOF... mostly. There is rank in the game, but it only affects one attack, Shizuha Aki's second non-spell on easy and normal.
There's a theory that Satsuki Rin was supposed to be a nurse. That's because after Marisa gets called out for using Reimu's identity before fighting Flandre, she said that next time she'll say she's a nurse. That could imply she was talking about using Satsuki's identity.
Didn't know Sakuya vs Youmu was supposed to be a thing in Touhou 8, i guess this is where MinusT got the idea for this matchup that's going to happen in the next video (if you're reading this in the future maybe it already happened).
3:00 - "Count" is usually a little enum hack for old programming languages that did not automatically have a way to get the number of elements in an enum (basically a list of options in a drop down menu). Because an enum is just a number with a name associated with it for humans to read, you can make the last number "count" and then you can always know how large the list of elements is without manually typing it.
Highly Responsive to Prayers has two unused attacking sprites. Story of Eastern Wonderland has unused staff roll pictures with strange coloring. Phantasmagoria of Dim. Dream has purple enemies at their two smallest sizes that end up never being included in any enemy formations. Same goes for the smallest size blue enemy. In Mystic Square there's unused character portrait art for Mima. Shoot the Bullet and Double Spoiler both have unused bonuses that would've been awarded after taking photos. Lonely Shot, Miss Shot, Counter Flash! and Geometric! in StB. In DS the same unused bonus exist, but also !Debug! and Oyaji Bonus. Both games also have unused character sprites and character portrait art. Great Fairy Wars also has unused character portrait art.
Who would even fill the niche of the video recording gimmick if it isn't Sumireko? I know you really don't like her but just making a new character for that gimmick would be lame when Sumireko is pretty amusing for how much of a dork with a superiority complex she is.
I was actually thinking more of a Tengu technology advancement (new photo game) than a whole new character who's ability is to record videos. I wonder what a character like that would even be like
Yeah, "Not many people care for this game" and him just outright saying he'd rather not see her again felt very out of place. Who cares about what he likes or doesn't like? Just focus on showing the content.
@@Lashteen I mean I think it's fine to throw a couple of opinions in there for spice. Otherwise it's just a dry video full of facts and no character. I wanna know that the person behind the screen is their own person with their own likes and dislikes.
Personally, I don't think it was a touhou "unused content" bit, but I remember seeing a video a few years ago of a sound test thing in story of eastern wonderland. I don't remember what the guy entered, but he pressed quit and proceeded to type some lines into the prompt. It then played a sound test that was like 10+ minutes long, and was unnerving at that. The video has been deleted since to my knowledge. Just thought I'd mention it lol.
@@oddhate No idea. All I know is that the same screen the dude accessed is accessible through pressing quit on most-if-not all the pc98 games through neko project II. I used the npw21 version, and i got the same terminal screen. All I know is most of the stuff was japanese, but the guy typed in english characters. I think it had yuma in the name or something. I could be wrong though. I saw this like 4-5 years ago.
Late to the conversation, could it be that the command he sent might have overlapped multiple files? That's one way to explain how to get unexplainable garbage...
I think MoF having 5 stages was 100% a callback to SoEW, just like the Japanese title (Fujinroku for MoF and Fumaroku for SoEW. The Kanji are different in the original, but the readings are very similar)
Speaking of the Phantasm stage in IN, I *swear* I saw somewhere that there was a named unused character like Rin Satsuki whose name was (I forgot the first name) Izayoi and she was going to be the Phantasm boss in IN, but I can't find it anywhere
I know what you're thinking of, and what it is is that the kanji used for the "Phantasm" stage is the same one used in Sakuya's name, hence "Izayoi" a possible theory is Sakuya was related to the Phantasm stage, which has a bit of credibility to it with how Sakuya interacts with the full moon in the Final Stages, and some of Eirin's comments, that never actually go anywhere.
I love that thprac lets you play through some of the unused spells, and the other spells/bosses locked by shot type. Now everyone gets to experience the Mercury Poisoning that Rin Satsuki would've caught
I am surprised that the Midi Music from Flower View's trial was left out. To think that we could have had Midis of Aya, Medicine, Yuuka, Komachi, and Shikieiki is pretty interesting had ZUN decided to keep everyone elses midis in the final game.
10:12 I have so many things I want to ask ZUN about, and that is one of them. Why'd he change it? Almost certainly he changed it when he decided to connect the Phantasm boss to Merry Hearn, the CD protagonist, but which came first: Merry or Yukari?
7:43 a statement which was never actually sourced beyond “ZUN said” It’d also be the only circle cut to have NOTHING to do with what ZUN is bringing, so I’m skeptical.
good job on the video, however a small correction on the shrine of the wind thing, the unused stages in the japanese version of the game play no music, the song can be only accessed through the music test menu
Another thing that went unused was that Tenshi was originally going to have animated cloud patterns on her dress (Similar to Okuu's cape). This was scrapped but Zun drew it on Tenshi's design for an Atlanta convention in 2013. Touhou 9.8 being changed to Touhou 10.5 was most likely done to fit the timeline better, with Touhou 10.5 no longer happening before 10. Why? Probably has to do with Youkai Mountain or Aya maybe. Also, I loved the story of 16.5 and Sumireko grew on me.
10:15 Never heard of this before, fascinating! I wonder if ZUN had a different idea in mind for Yukari given the different meaning in Suzukaze compared to Yakumo.
One thing I noticed about one of Reisen's unused palettes is that it may actually have been reused in a sense, with Lost Word. Specifically the Lunatic Space Youkai variant of Reisen where she has blond hair. Given Lost Word's themes of alternate timelines and aspects of the universe going missing, a part of me hopes that some of the unused content does find a sort of new life in Lost Word.
I like to imagine that Satsuki Rin is somehow capable of manipulating cut content (nonexistence/abandoned/or forgotten things). Could be a good excuse to bring back old characters/things to the main story.
man i cant believe that if the 12.3 roaster would have went after ZUNs plans that we would have had almost the entire Team 9 in there. A big loss indeed
9:21 they arent "unused" its just the midi versions of the songs. ok stage 3 yeah its lower pitched than the midi and wav but im sure stage 2 is still pitched like that in the midi
Wow, I didnt know about the secret unlock code OR the 3rd Eosd character, I though I knew alot about touhou but it turns out that I've still yet to scratch the surface
every game after DDC the shot type is the same file, i like how reimu still have the gohei in UM also an insane amount of leftovers is in the game, stuff like wbawc ending in UM files, same thing for lolk. also lolk had in mind a practice start (ddc leftover)
i kinda wish that there was more unused content on the new games, but i guess that the better you become as a developer, the less unused stuff you leave.
I'm wondering why was Rin Satsuki gonna be a 1st Playable New Windows Character, if she wasn't from the PC-98 ERA like Reimu and Marisa and neither has a pc-98 counterpart.
my theory for Satsuki Rin is that she is a prototype of one of Yukaris shikigami, this is based on two things, first is simply that her name sounds like Rin, which could have became Ran or could have been Chen was originally suppose to have similar sounding name to her master, the more substantial piece of evidence is that her name contains "Kirin" which are a creatures said to herald the arrival of a great sage, and who would the very next game introduce? everyone's second favorite yokai sage Yukari, and from comments from Zun about how he was already planning to make Sakuya playable even before EoSD was finished we knew he was already thinking ahead to the next game, a bit more of a stretch but its also theorized from some of Marisas dialogue that Rin was going to be a nurse, which could be synchronizing Kirins and Unicorns to give her an association with healing, and would somewhat fit Ran being the caretaker of the frequently bedridden Yukari(though at least in the final version shes only bedridden because she sleeps so much, rather then poor health) ultimately if this was the case it would make sense for her to be cut, touhous not big on story so there wouldent be much opportunity to set up her working for some mysterious benefactor, which would make both her inclusion and her suddenly working for the bad guys in the next game feel random and out of left field
Counterpoint, a common theme with the names were that they were all named after colours, and partially inspired by the colours of light as well as the Japanese colour-based rank system. There’s not really any room for the pairing to work given the references ZUN used (except maybe as Chen’s shikigami, lol) and there’s not much to back up why Yukari would be bedridden originally.
I wonder if Urban legend in limbo had some content that got scrapped too?... Actually, i wonder if the other materials (the manga, the novels and the cd dramas) also has some unused content or scrapped material too?
kinda sad how 90% of the contents discussed in this video are not documented in The Cutting Room Floor. TCRF articles are mostly just about full unlock codes...
oh hey, HSiFS wasn't originally meant to force you to go through an EXTRA stage just to get any sort of a closure to the story, and instead encouraged playing the main game more rather than jarringly telling any type of player (including the people who do easy 1cc's) to shut up and do EXTRA. the PCB's cut content is the most interesting to me, as the older portraits, the way the earlier demos play slightly differently and the unused Prismriver nonspell would make the game better for me.

If I'm not mistaken, the Twilight Frontier devs wanted Momiji to appear in SWR as Aya's partner in one of her spellcards but was scrapped due to ZUN revealing about the feud between Aya and Momiji.
Sometimes we can not listen to ZUN and disregard his wrong opinions on this game he created.
Wait, so shion exists because joon needed a partner?
This reminds me of how waluigi came into existence
SHION IS THE WALUIGI OF TOUHOU
Hey man, any justification for poverty hobo gf is good enough for me
Technically almost all spinoff-introduced characters are Waluigi, considering how rare it is for characters to return in mainline games(even if they arguably should, instead of adding characters that didn't need to exist otherwise)
Brought in to compliment a main character and becoming a fan(?) favorite
Fun little factoids, I'm salty Clownpiece didn't make it into to AoCF though
And the partner to a greedy, money-obsessed character with heavy yellows in their palette.
The 12 minutes of Alice's theme solo drumming though. That's definitely not a mistake. Maybe ZUN needed to hear it on repeat to confirm things.
I guess the only mistake was not deleting the data once the final version was finished, to be fair

One more unused music from PCB
08. 過去の花 ~ Fairy of Flower (04:57)
Flower of Past Days ~ Fairy of Flower
original title: 過去の花 ~ Fairy of Flower
source: 東方妖々夢 ~ Perfect Cherry Blossom (Unused Track)
From Ghostly Field Club.
So Rin Satsuki was gonna be an early Yachie?
Zun: hmm integral precise bomb timings make for an unfun game, let's remove it.
JynX: Haha.... yeah....
Omg never expected to see a terratia fan here.
Ello I'm also terratia fan,
I LOVE the trial versions of "The Fantastic Tales of Tono" and "The Doll Maker of Bucuresti". The lower pitch somehow makes it more emotional and nostalgic to me.
20:56 About that, the same happens with Okina's second spell in stage 6, she moves after 10,000 waves lmao
The unused portraits start to become really common after touhou 14, for example, Junko and Saki have an angry expression that they never use.
The explanation about Sagume being only testing the player might be plausible, but not the lengthy dialogue, mostly after having seen ExOkina's defeat dialogue, and the fact ZUN made it possible to put different expressions on the defeated portraits from th17 onwards.
26:16 This reminds me people mentioned that a "Disable" text is unused in the touhou 16 UI, they believe it was supposed to be used during the Okina final
26:00 *sigh* so he DID plan for the roar break button to be mappable somewhere else!
Another aspect of semi-unused content- there's a chiptune remix of candid friend in HM's files and spotify ost release, but not in the actual game. It's pretty nice!
where 2 find?
Not so much "cut content" but more of a bug... There was the "shoplifting glitch" in the first demo of Unconnected Marketeers, where you could reload the shop screen by pausing, even after choosing an item. Repeatedly. So you could stock up on gold and buy multiple support cards and be grossly overpowered (and pray the game didn't crash)
Marisa glitch
it is strangely poetic that the end of the immortals theme song never plays
UFO has another more interesting demo difference, the PIV system was overhauled after the original demo. Some of the differences between 0.01 and the final game are:
-Lunatic started with 50,000 PIV in 0.01 instead of 20,000 in the final game (all other difficulties are the same in both versions)
-Collecting any token at any time in 0.01 increased PIV by 250 instead of the 1,000 PIV increase only when collected during an active summon in the final game
-Bullets couldn't be grazed immediately when spawned in 0.01, they could in the final game
These changes ended up completely changing UFO's score routing, a lot of the big grazes wouldn't be possible, and throwing away tokens would be almost completely worthless so the game would be more about using all the tokens to spawn *something* all the time instead of the fewer, bigger summons we do see in score runs, it wouldn't at all have been the same game for scoring if it had kept the original PIV system.
Rumia beating up Yukari in a fighting game would indeed be absolutely hillarious
Didn't know Sakuya vs Youmu was supposed to be a thing in Touhou 8, i guess this is where MinusT got the idea for this matchup that's going to happen in the next video (if you're reading this in the future maybe it already happened).
I mean, doujins have showed the fight for more than a decade so MinusT certainly didn't come up with the idea.
@@seki108 I'm just referring to MinustT's videos itself, not that they came up with it.
@@mrhades113 Oops, sorry for misunderstanding. I'll blame it on me being half asleep at the time
3:00 - "Count" is usually a little enum hack for old programming languages that did not automatically have a way to get the number of elements in an enum (basically a list of options in a drop down menu). Because an enum is just a number with a name associated with it for humans to read, you can make the last number "count" and then you can always know how large the list of elements is without manually typing it.
I'm very guilty of the "12 minutes of drums" phenomenon when I write music too
I'm imagining Alice doing a sick drum solo
@ANueUtsuho Oh she must've gotten so into it that she didn't notice the band had already left
Thanks
Damn, the lower pitched versions of the Touhou 7 music sounds downright eerie, almost like something that belonged in CTC
Hope that one day, CtC gets a spotlight on this channel.
Or at least gets a play through on stream.
@@AspreyFM Hatate has a phone, doesn't she? She seems like the perfect choice for that over the old-fashioned Aya.
That's interesting. That method sounds really complicated if it was meant to be accessed normally at all. What kind of sound test was it?
@@oddhate No idea. All I know is that the same screen the dude accessed is accessible through pressing quit on most-if-not all the pc98 games through neko project II. I used the npw21 version, and i got the same terminal screen. All I know is most of the stuff was japanese, but the guy typed in english characters. I think it had yuma in the name or something. I could be wrong though. I saw this like 4-5 years ago.
Late to the conversation, could it be that the command he sent might have overlapped multiple files? That's one way to explain how to get unexplainable garbage...
Unused touhou music on the other hand boils down to LLS suddenly slapping you with tracks that are BANGERS
Nice thumbnail, i really needed to see Reimu drop her Swords of Revealing Light today
I think MoF having 5 stages was 100% a callback to SoEW, just like the Japanese title (Fujinroku for MoF and Fumaroku for SoEW. The Kanji are different in the original, but the readings are very similar)
Am I missing something? MOF has six stages, the autumn sisters, Hina, Nitori, Aya, Sanae and Kanako.
Now everyone gets to experience the Mercury Poisoning that Rin Satsuki would've caught
awesome new asprey content, thank you for the video!
I am surprised that the Midi Music from Flower View's trial was left out. To think that we could have had Midis of Aya, Medicine, Yuuka, Komachi, and Shikieiki is pretty interesting had ZUN decided to keep everyone elses midis in the final game.
excellent video as always, i hope rin satsuki comes back she looks interesting considering she was going to be playable in the FIRST windows game
10:12 I have so many things I want to ask ZUN about, and that is one of them. Why'd he change it? Almost certainly he changed it when he decided to connect the Phantasm boss to Merry Hearn, the CD protagonist, but which came first: Merry or Yukari?
7:43 a statement which was never actually sourced beyond “ZUN said”
It’d also be the only circle cut to have NOTHING to do with what ZUN is bringing, so I’m skeptical.
good job on the video, however a small correction on the shrine of the wind thing, the unused stages in the japanese version of the game play no music, the song can be only accessed through the music test menu
8:35 im going to have a nightmare
Everyone gangsta til Doremy comes in wearing the green stockings.
Surprised Alice and Cirno's cut spellcards from PCB weren't on here
BABE WAKE UP NEW ASPREY JUST DROPPED

But Utsuho wouldn't have been playable. That is an even greater loss that we thankfully avoided.
9:21 they arent "unused" its just the midi versions of the songs. ok stage 3 yeah its lower pitched than the midi and wav but im sure stage 2 is still pitched like that in the midi

Wow, I didnt know about the secret unlock code OR the 3rd Eosd character, I though I knew alot about touhou but it turns out that I've still yet to scratch the surface

also an insane amount of leftovers is in the game, stuff like wbawc ending in UM files, same thing for lolk. also lolk had in mind a practice start (ddc leftover)
Cirno was in the LoLK demo, too. But she was deleted from the final version
I would really want to hear immortal smoke with the unused part
It sounds so gooood
touhou 4 also has some music files from the previous games in it for some reason
i kinda wish that there was more unused content on the new games, but i guess that the better you become as a developer, the less unused stuff you leave.
RANK_COUNT is a C programming convention which allows you to check whether an enum value is within bounds.
Almost lived in a universe where tiktok exists in Touhou canon
I'm wondering why was Rin Satsuki gonna be a 1st Playable New Windows Character, if she wasn't from the PC-98 ERA like Reimu and Marisa and neither has a pc-98 counterpart.
Trial version Letty is the cutest thing ever
Great content like always
my theory for Satsuki Rin is that she is a prototype of one of Yukaris shikigami, this is based on two things, first is simply that her name sounds like Rin, which could have became Ran or could have been Chen was originally suppose to have similar sounding name to her master, the more substantial piece of evidence is that her name contains "Kirin" which are a creatures said to herald the arrival of a great sage, and who would the very next game introduce? everyone's second favorite yokai sage Yukari, and from comments from Zun about how he was already planning to make Sakuya playable even before EoSD was finished we knew he was already thinking ahead to the next game, a bit more of a stretch but its also theorized from some of Marisas dialogue that Rin was going to be a nurse, which could be synchronizing Kirins and Unicorns to give her an association with healing, and would somewhat fit Ran being the caretaker of the frequently bedridden Yukari(though at least in the final version shes only bedridden because she sleeps so much, rather then poor health)
ultimately if this was the case it would make sense for her to be cut, touhous not big on story so there wouldent be much opportunity to set up her working for some mysterious benefactor, which would make both her inclusion and her suddenly working for the bad guys in the next game feel random and out of left field
@@Aaa-vp6ug yukaris bedridden just because she canonically kind of just hybernates for long stretches of time
