Destaining books using HOP or BLED can work magic on dust lines, tide lines, foxing and many other kinds of stains. CGC has recently wised up to this practice and when they spot the signs of a H2O2 treated cover they will return the book with a conserved blue label that states: “cover cleaned”. They don’t always make the call but when they do it is often because the H2O2 causes a slight stipple to the cover that can sometimes enhance its gloss. One can detect this by touch. Another round of HOP using water can return the glossy stippling back to normal but one always takes a chance with this technique. Thanks for this great video Bry. I always learn something from your show. Many thanks and cheers!
Great help explaining how to grade a little better. Didn’t expect that many ticks on the spine to grade in the nines, but if smaller than 1 inch then all good
The CGC forums have a section where members grade other member's books via provided pictures. One thing that is almost universal in the grading comments is that "CGC hates stains." Your video definitely proves that!
Do you find that older higher ticket books get more harshly graded compared to lower price point books? I sometimes wonder whether CGC takes value into account in their grading.
Great video. Really helps with these examples. I’ve been hesitant to send anything in that might be considered staining. Not that I’ve sent a lot for grading, but a few silver age books that have some stains I’ve resisted sending for this reason. Common feedback or response regarding staining. Thanks as always, sir!
The flaws for anything above an 8.0 should be quantifiable, measurable and objective. But they won’t take the time to write 4 word grader notes let alone measure a spine tick. It’s doable, they just don’t want to take the time or have to justify their mistakes.
Terrific information Bry. I am fairly new to the 'art' of collecting. My brother and I collected Marvel back in the late 60's to mid 70's. I have already purchased a few from you. Thanks for your service.
Couple things: 1. I was about to callout the Batman 423 being a 2nd or 3rd print, but I looked it up in your store and I see you mentioned that already. I can't believe they missed that on the label. Oh, wait. Yes I can. lol 2. Quick story about stains: I have a House of Secrets 4.0 that has a small stain on the back (that goes through most of the book). The book presents MUCH better than a 4.0, but that was the grade it got due to that stain. CGC beats the Hell out of you over staining, BUT...on the plus side you can get some monster grails that present like mid/high grade books if that stain is on the back. (Silver lining and all that!)
Great informative video, anytime I see a stain that's not that big I always downgraded a grade and a half to two grades if it's a large Stain I just don't get it but cgc saying that there could be a stain and still get a 9.6-9.8 come on that's crap if I ever saw any kind of staining on those High grades and I was purchasing it without inspecting it I would be furious and feel cheated
One of your more interesting videos particularly concerning your grading accuracy because it shows how wrong we can all be from time to time. Despite that I think we all need to aspire to be as comprehensive as we can when assigning a specific grade or grade range. I think that having a universal fundamental understanding of grades--especially by sellers--will do much to educate the collecting community and make reselling and buying easier and more enjoyable for everyone.
Question for anyone who can answer: if the book's spine has color-breaking creases (let's say those are the only defects on the book), is it worth getting it pressed? The color breaks would still be there, would it actually grade better if the creases were gone and the breaks remain?
I have a WWBN 32 that looks like that Batman 423, perfect apart from a ton of tiny spine ticks. I didn't think it could get above a 7. Now I'm definitely submitting it.
I noticed on my vintage submissions, the last two they hit me pretty hard, out of 25 I agreed with 2 books. Even showed to other dealers and they agreed it was pretty harsh. Oh well, part of the game we play
CGC is so inconsistent lately. That Batman #423 was nowhere near a 9.4 with all those defects. Not to mention they labeled it as a 1st printing when that UPC was only used on the 2nd and 3rd printings.
I have had many books I have sent to CGC that I thought would be in the nines to only come back at a 5.5 or worse due to standing it’s the albatross of negative.
Uhhhh... are you referring to my comment about the Avengers Annual 10? You might want to look at it again and double check the definition of "adamant". And my comment was also about how the stains on the Marvel Premiere 15 were likely to get you a lower grade than you were thinking...
CGC just sent me an Heir To The Empire #1 that they had made a mechanical error. I know the book well as I had worked on it and pressed it myself. After finally getting it back they have damaged the top of the book with some dents/dings. They still gave the 9.8 but there is no way it would get the grade if I submitted it as it is now. So pissed. Whoever buys it will be wondering how is this a 9.8?

Great help explaining how to grade a little better. Didn’t expect that many ticks on the spine to grade in the nines, but if smaller than 1 inch then all good
Great info, specially the part about stains.
The fire for collecting has been reignited. Love your videos! They are super informative and helpful. Keep them coming!
It takes something special to cgc so many minty raws. I applaud you...living the dream...
The CGC forums have a section where members grade other member's books via provided pictures. One thing that is almost universal in the grading comments is that "CGC hates stains." Your video definitely proves that!
Love the grading videos. Soaking up as much information as I can.
Thanks for the information Bry! Always interesting to see what grade conics come back as....
I like this format! Very educational. I need to pick that CGC book up.
Do you find that older higher ticket books get more harshly graded compared to lower price point books? I sometimes wonder whether CGC takes value into account in their grading.
I haven’t found there to be a blanket statement like that but it is quite possible
Very helpful video. I learned a lot about grading. Thanks!
That was very informative my guy, thanks for sharing! 👍🏾😀
I found this video extremely helpful. I am still learning about how CGC grades books and this was definitely informative
Great info about stains, thanks Bry.
great tips bry! defintely very helpful!
Ya know Bry, if this whole comic thing doesn't work out CGC should hire you as a grader.
So detailed and informative! Thanks!
Great video. Spot on for most of the books. Their harshness on the stains only thing that threw you off.
I could see stains effecting graded.
I really need to get my hands on that CGC book. Good stuff Bry thanks!
Yeah I agree stains are such a pain to deal with on grading the book.
Your grading game is strong Bry, thanks for the video.
Great, informative video! You nailed it on almost all the grades, well done!
Definitely love this video. I like the before and after results 🔥🔥
Bry, I appreciate your free advice and knowledge! These videos are helpful!
I wonder if the bigger piece for the stain is that the notes say “through book”. Does whatever you see there continue on a few more pages.
Im going to subscribe to the newsletter. The 3 part matching covers looks awesome!
Except for the stained books, your guess on grades was pretty spot on.
Awesome video, what is the secret to getting those posters to stay on the wall without thumb tacks
Clear thumbtacks 😜
9.8 teen titans, your grader was in a good mood :)
It’s frustrating how subjective grading is from person to person, but there’s really no other way to do it
Agreed
The flaws for anything above an 8.0 should be quantifiable, measurable and objective. But they won’t take the time to write 4 word grader notes let alone measure a spine tick. It’s doable, they just don’t want to take the time or have to justify their mistakes.
@@Supertomscustoms true. I’m sure the sheer amount of books they get in is probably a huge factor also.
Super informative stuff bud!
I’m curious too see what pressing a comic looks like before sending it to cgc.
Great job on those 9.8’s
Thx for the great info on stains
Terrific information Bry. I am fairly new to the 'art' of collecting. My brother and I collected Marvel back in the late 60's to mid 70's. I have already purchased a few from you. Thanks for your service.
Its crazy how much stains hit the books. I have seen so many books that look like 8.0 that grade at 6-7 cause of a small stain
Your grading information is second to none sir. You’re doing the lords work 🫡
Very informative - great video Bry!
Thank you for another lesson professor Bry.
That mold is serious schitt. I can see why people want to "restore" it. Hopefully CGC can see the cleaning/resto
I’m hoping I can get on whatnot. It’ll be 3am my time when it kicks off.
Pretty spot on for the grades. Very cool!
Super CGC books. Nice job again
Thank you for another great lesson Professor! My takeaway: Spine tics over Stains. Keep grinding bro.✌️
CGC will press now..... its a 9$ charge. just curious, do you press for customers? how much? do local comic stores press?
Really great video, enjoyed this one!
Bry, great video on staining.
great info. on grading love the video thank you
Thanks for educating us geeks Bry.
so perfect pictuer! )

Thanks! Will watch stains for carefully now!
Interesting takes on comics. thanks.
It's crazy how good of an eye you have for grading
Great video. Want to send books to CGC for the first time, but wasn't sure what to expect as far as grade. I see now, I need a magnifying glass lol
Very helpful. Much appreciated, my dude 🤘🤘
These are awesome videos. Keep doing these please
Bry, I thought your grading was spot on. But like I said before, grading is subjective and varies person to person. Good content, Bry!🤗
Great video. Stains are so tough to judge.
Your whatnots are always fun and can be good to just watch some of the bidding wars
Hey I’m a more newer subscriber and had no idea you did giveaways every month where should I keep a lookout for that?
One of your more interesting videos particularly concerning your grading accuracy because it shows how wrong we can all be from time to time. Thanks great video very informative.
Is it ok to press books with hologram stickers on them, ex. Asm #365?
That was a great deal on the Marvel Premiere 15. Had to get it.Thank you Bry!
👏👏
Very informative!
Another great video Bry!
Is the CGC the only grading service you use, just curious? 🧐
As always, great video!
Do you have videos on how comics are pressed etc
Question for anyone who can answer: if the book's spine has color-breaking creases (let's say those are the only defects on the book), is it worth getting it pressed? The color breaks would still be there, would it actually grade better if the creases were gone and the breaks remain?
Do you offer clean, press, & submission service?
No, I’m just a small shop so we don’t have the bandwidth…
I have a WWBN 32 that looks like that Batman 423, perfect apart from a ton of tiny spine ticks. I didn't think it could get above a 7. Now I'm definitely submitting it.
Grading is very subjective, but you do a nice job of breaking it down.
I noticed on my vintage submissions, the last two they hit me pretty hard, out of 25 I agreed with 2 books. Even showed to other dealers and they agreed it was pretty harsh. Oh well, part of the game we play
Water stain drops 8.0 automatically then the other things wrong with it so 7.5 is actually a great grade. Should be more like a 6.5
CGC is so inconsistent lately. That Batman #423 was nowhere near a 9.4 with all those defects. Not to mention they labeled it as a 1st printing when that UPC was only used on the 2nd and 3rd printings.
Yup. I noticed that too and Bry didn’t mention second printing, I was like wha-?! That grader must’ve gotten some booty action the night before.
I have had many books I have sent to CGC that I thought would be in the nines to only come back at a 5.5 or worse due to standing it’s the albatross of negative.
I've come across some weird stains I don't know what they were! Maybe a smashed bug or something.
Nice job grading - do you have a part time job at CGC ?
Some good books.
Great info for all collectors!
Good grading mr. Bry… always better to under then to over grade…. I was beat to your store to buy that punisher 129.. gone so quick
😮 Very informative 🙏
The experience I have, they hit really hard for a stain. Those are some nice books.
Stains are the worst!!
I’m a new collector so thanks for the video
Uhhhh... are you referring to my comment about the Avengers Annual 10? You might want to look at it again and double check the definition of "adamant". And my comment was also about how the stains on the Marvel Premiere 15 were likely to get you a lower grade than you were thinking...
I don’t remember who it was I just remember someone saying “no way it gets a 9.0” no offense intended
Awesome video, very helpful!
Yeah, stains suck for the person submitting, but are a great opportunity for a great deal on a book that presents really well otherwise
I'd say that tear in the avengers book, probably is over graded at a 9.
I had a similar tear in the back of John Stewarts first appearance... Book was perfect except for the tear, it got a 6.5
Great video
I was trying to buy The Boys book, but I was too slow. 😂 As soon as I had it in my cart it was gone lol.
😫
@BrysComics Next time though!
Love tht avengers (An) 10
presenting at an 8.5 does not mean you can sell it for that. YOu can sell it for a 7.5 sorry
Of course not 🤦♂️
CGC is super harsh on books with mishandling damage like staining and dog-eared corners.
Good info!!!
CGC just sent me an Heir To The Empire #1 that they had made a mechanical error. I know the book well as I had worked on it and pressed it myself.
