  • A machine this big making a small flat washer for a rusty old van project may not be clever, but as CNC gets more and more accessible, washers are the tip of the iceberg of possible CNC plasma cut classic and restomod parts.

    I can't recall if i found the channel because of the van or the Lotus. Subscribed because of many reasons, 2 of them being the humour and film style. And now i'm one of those guys that's going to leave a comment about how I just watched a 25 minute video of someone cutting washers whilst i have my coffee on a Sunday morning, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks for doing what you do, looking forward to what's to come. Watching from Québec, Canada.

    George, critical tool to help clean up the metal after a cut: Magnetic Chuck and a knotted wire wheel for an angle grinder. Get a big magnetic plate, toss your pieces on, turn on the magnet and go at it with the stiff bristles, SO much faster to clean up the flashing. The CNC will be a fantastic machine that really speeds up and improves fabrication ideas. I recently bought one as well, so glad you've got one too!

    Don't underestimate this tool. @Superfastmat just built a dry sump for his motorbike engine powered Honda car using only laser cut steel plates he designed on CAD then welded them all together ending up with the unique shape he needed for the tight confines.

    A CNC plasma table is on my wishlist for the workshop. It'll have to wait a while though, I'm finishing up an overhaul of my Bridgeport and then the big lathe needs a bit of tlc and a rewire. I'll get there at some stage.
    That will be a very useful addition to the arsenal George. It'll definetly cut down on the grinder disc consumption.

    The drain valve on your compresser looks like its not easy to access on a daily basis, invariably meaning that the tank won't get drained as and when it should.
    The exposed OSB panels look very susceptible to the pressurised water exiting the tank, which can soak in and be absorbed, causing multiple problems.
    Other than that, ti's good.

    I don't even know why plasma cutters have settings.
    Crank it up to 11, turn your air pressure up as high as the fitting will allow to blow that slag edge off, and put water in your tray. I've only ever used a plasma at 8/10 or above.
    Also, in the small corner of space you have, build a pretty heavy metal table with a vice and air supply and get an air file with a chisel bit on it. It chips that slag edge off easily.

      The jet of plasma won't move the part as the material that's in its path gets vapourised before any force could be applied to the piece. If the water is too close, splashes could shift a light part, but the bigger risk is that as you cut the part ends up unstable and wobbles or falls into the water. Depends on the spacing of the grid.

    • @tcar
      @tcar 2 роки тому

      Water cooling depends of the amperage used. The threads on the wiper are plastic, the car body is painted. The only problem is the nut (that could be changed to stainless too).

    Fresh Saturday night SOUP to enjoy over a glass of red!
    I was thinking that it would be ideal for all those parts that you just cannot find any more because no one has them. And you start off with some unobtainium washers! :D Not necessarily a replacement for the Cardboard Aided Design, that still has it's place, but a complement to it for those things that it is too time consuming or difficult to do by hand. Personally, I would have probably just expanded the ID with a Dremel, but more washers is better and cheaper practice before hitting the bigger, more complex shapes. :)

    Not sure if it helps but I used to do laser cutting as a job, we used to have 1 inch weld mesh under the material being cut to support small parts, as a lead in 10mm was standard and a circular lead in or a perpendicular lead in with a small radius helped with blow out in the transition, also on external corners we used to cut a small radius beyond the corner(so we actually went past the end of the desired cut, circled round so the cut came in at 90° to get a decent corner with limited burn away)
