Thank you for this. The fact it works at all on the new iPads shows apple specifically blocked the connection just so you'd have to buy the new gen apple pencil.
The IPad 10 Supports The Apple Pencil Gen 1. You just need to use the adapter, which is lighting to usb-c, then use a usb-c to usb-c cable. You connect it all together afterward and it will pair.

hi, i tried to follow all the steps, but lightblue is asking for a "code shown on the Apple Pencil." i tried 1234 and 0000, but it both didn't work. how can i fix this?
You have to do following: -Open settings -click on bluetooth -click on Apple Pencil -click on forgot this device -open the light blue app and connect it.
disconnect the pencil and then forget the device.. repeat the process all over again to connect it.. just don’t disable bluetooth or disconnect the pencil until battery of pencil drains out (so that u don’t have to connect many times daily and it saves time too… charge the pencil with ipad charger(with the help of that cable thingy)… hope that helps
If the iPad you originally connected to is broken now or no-longer-with-you, have you tried plugging the pencil to a friend’s lightning-charger iPad (one that plays nice with 1st gen Apple Pencils) then once it’s connected to your friend’s device go to settings and FORGET the pencil from their iPad? I think the “memory” on the pencil’s connections is limited.
I’m using gen 5 it won’t work now but it worked once except I turned off my Bluetooth last night and forgot it would disconnect it now it won’t connect
