Real easy fix for the switches. The contacts are worn out. Just take apart the switches, clean with 70% isopropyl alcohol / cue tip. Then ever so lightly re-coat the switch contacts with conductive paint. Be very happy the rotary pots work, the large tempo pot is known for malfunctioning. The CR8000 has alot of wires everywhere, be careful when opening it up. Good purchase !
I use the nearly-identical CR-5000 and totally love it. Over the years, I've learned that programming drum patterns absolutely kills my songwriting process, and the CR-5000 has been a perfect solution. I turn it on, select a preset, tweak for a minute or so, and boom - I've got a unique pattern with those sweet, sweet 808 sounds. I also love the design. Love love love!
Had one of these but the Tempo pot went wrong. A guy i knew said he could fix but then was mysteriously beamed up to his space craft and was never seen again. I loved my CR8000 grrrr. Have Fun you lucky fellow.
I fell asleep last night after looking at some cr 8000 videos and then your cr 78 video just before nodding off, hoping you may have a cr 8000 video one day. I woke up, saw this, and thought I was still dreaming 😂 What an awesome way to wake up! Love your stuff mate!
Shadow Giratina's Evil Clone Yesss! I’ve been saying for years that the og drumbrute is great, it’s just more CR than the TR that everyone was expecting it to be! Which is just why I love it 🙂
@@CommissionerManu Right!? The CR-78 is still my personal favorite analog drum machine. Easily tops all the TRs simply for how much *character* it has.
Hi, anyone I am looking to buy the right converter for 220v to 110v for the CR 8000. Anyone would have some references please I could either buy on eBay, Craigslist, Amazon… thanks a lot. Much appreciated. C
I have one of these too. Haven't really messed with it much but apparently the Talking Heads used it. You can even hear it in the beginning of Stop Making Sense when David Byrne brings out the ghetto blaster and presses play for Psycho Killer.
There is a service and user manual online, I have a copy somewhere. a bit of a pain to program ( not used mine for years..) but a fun bit of kit.. You can select 2 patterns to play simultaneously.. I love the claps and congas!
This is fun little video and I’m stoked that you got a deal on one of my favorite drum machines, but I was kind of hoping you’d go more into depth on the CR-8000s features, limitations... it’s pros and cons compared to similar drum machines from that time. I know you can look that stuff up, but you have a fun vibe and I think viewers would appreciate the info on this dark horse/underdog beatbox. The CR-8000 is super unique and heavily overlooked, since it sits in the huge shadows cast by the Roland drum machines which immediately preceded and proceeded it. That’s one reason it’s still affordable. It’s also an interesting to compare/contrast with the Korg KR-55, since they look similar and have some of the same functions. Actually, its economic and non-programmable sibling, the CR-5000, is a more fair comparison to the KR-55. Maybe you will make a deeper dive CR-8000 video in the future?
I always was astound by its looks: so much the same as my KORG KR-55...these two could be twins! Probably and initially meant as being placed on an organ, I guess. Well, I wonder who was first at the time, Roland or KORG. The Roland offers you more possibilities, in comparison, but I think my KORG sounds warmer...am I right here?
Yes, that’s definitely the best way to describe it. However, it kind of lacks some of the best and/or unique features of both of those iconic machines. Regarding the CR-78, that machine has the metallic beat, tambourine and guiro that you can mix in and there’s nothing comparable on the CR-8000. As far as the TR-808, you have superior programmability, individual outputs, tunable kick/snare, and you can program the rimshot. While the CR-8000 does have a rimshot present in some of the presets (it’s level is adjustable and on the same pot as the cowbell and congas), the rimshot is not available as a programmable sound. Ultimately, these are minor drawbacks (although the rimshot is my favorite non-core sound) considering how good the CR-8000 sounds and how much more affordable it is compared to it’s older and younger brothers.
I had one of these. It did something very odd. If I programmed it, it sounded a certain way, but if a friend programmed it it would sound entirely different.
The beginning sounds a bit like the synth drums on a track made by Trevor Horn: ua-cam.com/video/ow0IakgFTu8/v-deo.html I think Trevor Horn said that the whole Slave To The Rhythm album was done entirely on a Synclavier, but maybe they used the CR-8000 as well.
I have seen some very interesting videos about how you remade some songs. Since it is the Christmas time, I would like you to try out to remake Wham's Last Christmas. As a return I would like to make an artwork for you! :) Let me know what you think ;)

Man ... I'm feeling old. I used to sell these new back in the 80s when I worked at a music store in St. Louis. I know the CR-8000 well. Enjoy!

Non near-identical 5000 has no screen, no HC, and no program-ability.
actually looks in better condition in real life than the ebay picture sugested.. thats rare

If you spell 'unboxing' backward. It reads "box." Kind of close.

One of those drums patterns sounded like i cant go for that by Hall & Oates.
They used the CR78
I have this machine! And 808 put together like a good pair of brothers!
Oh yeah, that's my kind of gear, glad you are going to bring it to light for us.
The cowbell sound reminds me of the 808.

Since then drum machines have come a long way. In fact, since then drum machines have come a long, long, long way. Thank goodness !
These old machine still have a certain charm.
It works amazingly well even that it’s a score and 18 years of age (38). They were released in ‘81.
If I knew you were coming to Canada I would have came over and had a beer with you - Cheers!
It sounds great, but it looks like a weighing scale from a 1980's post office
"Ladies and Germs." Hahaha! Didn't hear that coming.
How you getting on with the CR8000 ? Does it compare with the CR78 you reviewed ?
Switch caps are same as Juno60?
Buys unit from BC, ships it to Vancouver, which is further than back to the UK, then flies it home to the UK! I get why, just makes me chuckle
Whoa, that's a beauty!!
Will you be doing a vid on the MC-303??
Maybe
@@Doctormix Hope so! The first machine that truly got me into producing my own music! :)
Me too. Such a gritty beast. If you can program the mc 303 and make it dope, you can program anything.
Surprisingly good hats on this .. jazzy AF
How many cowbells included?

(found my pdf copies..)
From what i gather, this came out before the 808. So it basically has all the sounds of an 808, the precursor to it. I think that’s pretty cool
It does not have 808 sounds, only similar ones.
Do you know if this was the same unit that was in the movie "Revenge of the Nerds" band scene?
Yes it's the one around Gilbert's neck during the talent show.
I kove u man.thank u so much 4 your incredible work!

Very cool this drum Machine
Nice new toy, enjoy it !

The Korg one was released two years earlier, if my memory's good. Way simpler to program... but of course less bells and whistle.
@Jean Bonnefoy Thanks! As a huge KORG-fan, this is nice to read...yep, less features than the CR-8000, obviously, but warmer, I guess!
That cowbell is seriously familiar, is it the same as in any other Roland machines or was this simply a prolific drum machine?
Sounds like a muted version of the TR-808 cowbell.
Yup
