The cadenza to “Arrigo, ah parli ad un core” is superhuman: an arpeggio up to high C, a diminuendo on the C followed by a 2 and a half octave chromatic scale to the subterranean F sharp below middle C all in one breath!
Brava Montserrat!!!

@@promptersbox Indeed, 1974 was a spectacular year for her. She gave us that magnificent Norma in
Orange and the concert at the Abbaye du Thoronet, both preserved on video and audio respectively. The Thoronet is one of my top “desert island” recordings!

@@promptersbox Ah. It may now be difficult to find. It was issued in France by Rodolphe and distributed by Harmonia Mundi first on vinyl then on cd, which I have. You might try some of the live opera websites for it. She sings from Donna del Lago, Aroldo, Pirata, Devereux, and Corsaro . It was on July 28, 1974. She sang as if she’d never sing again! Rumor had it that she was to have major surgery after it.

MacNeil wonderful,what a voice. Milnes is very good in this opera but MacNeil has something else that makes is singing and acting through the voice in all the opera's he sang something special,Milnes didn't have that even though it was a great voice.
This performance carries more weight because of MacNeil. Grander and darker.
