Love me some Poco. They were country rock pioneers from the late 60s/early 70s. Founding members guitarists Richie Furay and Jim Messina were previously in the band Buffalo Springfield and pedal steel player Rusty Young played their song “Kind Woman”. They added bassist Randy Meisner and drummer George Grantham to form the original lineup. Randy left after the first album and joined Rick Nelson’s Stone Canyon Band, then joined the Eagles. He was replaced by Timothy B. Schmit. Jim Messina left after 2 studio albums and their first live album and formed the duo Loggins & Messina w/ Kenny Loggins. Jim was replaced by Paul Cotton.
The Poco lineup of Furay, Cotton, Young, Schmit, and Grantham is performing in this video. After their 5th album Crazy Eyes, Furay departed and formed the Souther-Hillman-Furay band w/songwriter JD Souther and ex-Byrds member Chris Hillman. Poco carried on as a 4-piece until Timothy B. Schmit left to join the Eagles, replacing original Poco/Eagles bassist Randy Meisner. Drummer George Grantham left shortly thereafter.
This left members Rusty Young and Paul Cotton to carry on. After a decade since forming the band and garnering no hits, Poco finally achieved chart success in 1979 with the songs “Crazy Love” (written/sung by Rusty Young) and “Heart of the Night” (written/sung) by Paul Cotton.
The duo-led lineup soldiered on until the original lineup reunited in 1989 w/Furay, Messina, Young, Meisner, and Grantham. They had the Top 40 radio hits “Call It Love” (sung by Rusty Young) and “Nothin’ To Hide” (Randy Meisner).
The original Poco lineup dispersed again shortly thereafter. The band continued with Rusty along with Paul Cotton and George Grantham (occasionally w/Richie Furay). Paul and George left, leaving Rusty as the only original member to remain in Poco until his death in 2020, ceasing the band’s existence. Paul Cotton also passed away later that same year.
Despite little to no commercial success during the band’s existence, Poco has been cited and a huge influence of early country rock and the few hits they had remain popular staples of adult contemporary soft rock. Their legacy cannot be understated and their history is rich in rock and roll lineage. I highly recommend reacting to these Poco songs:
Heart of the Night, Bad Weather, Call It Love, Rose of Cimarron, Pickin’ Up The Pieces, You Better Think Twice, Crazy Love, Just For Me and You, Keep On Tryin’, Indian Summer, Magnolia, Crazy Eyes, Here We Go Again, C’mon, Ride The Country, and Under The Gun.

Richie Furay is still performing and singing this at 80. Heard him recently. He’s still great!

This is a great country rock band formed in 1968 with some former members of Buffalo Springfield. "Crazy Love" was one of their biggest hits. But other good ones were "You Better Think Twice", "Heart Of The Night", "Pickin' Up The Pieces", "Call It Love", "Rose Of Cimarron", "Bad Weather", "Keep On Tryin'" etc.
