- MotoMan heads to Carefree, Arizona to drive the all new 2023 @BMW M2 and learns that dimensional changes in moving to the G87 generation of @BMWM2 do have an impact on the way the M2 drives, yet not in the way one would think but they do pose a question about the most basic @BMWUSA M4 . . .

'Lets take 500lbs out of it, but not make it a hundred grand'. Brilliant suggestion, Motoman and an excellent review as always.
I'm sure everybody wants that but is it even possible? You can delete the seats and the sound deadening but I think the CLAR architecture that underpins this car and something like a BMW SUV has too much flexibility and cost-savings in materials baked in that engineering it to be lighter and more focused isn't possible without making an expensive bespoke chassis like a z4. Keep in mind the new CSL 3.0 based on the M4, they had to make the body panels carbon fiber to get the weight down over an m4 csl.
@@jw6188 you're right, but that's issue with BMW's CLAR strategy. They deprioritized the ability to make lighter, smaller cars.
Unfortunately it makes business sense given sales volumes (mostly SUVs) and cost savings from platform sharing.
Agreed...hell, I'd be happy with 250lbs out of it; but 500 is better...;-)
Sounds like the F87 M2
I'm a now retired mechanical design engineer and life long car enthusiast. A 500 weight reduction at anything remotely resembling this price point is pure fantasy, even with a gutted interior. Most of the weight is structural. Would need an all aluminum structure plus all carbon panels plus a stripped interior devoid of all luxury options (including AC) to even get close to that weight.
MotoMan, I agree with you. That is a nice looking ride! Great review as always.
Okay. Nice, and the grill is horizontal. No Bugs Bunny teeth 😀!
I dig it. It looks good here, better than the spy photos a few months ago.
My favorite new car by a landslide. Definitely get the carbon roof and manual unless you have a nasty daily commute. Thanks MotoMan.
I spec the blue with the carbon package and manual transmission for an end of may delivery.
I like black all around. My M2s that is.
My pleasure!
My new favorite as well, but I think I would go for the automatic, because the manual gearing is too far apart and wont be as much fun on everyday roads. 1st and 2nd and 3rd are way too tall in the manual.
@@miken1460 Perhaps you're right about the gearing. but if the 0.2 second 0-60 difference between the manual and the automatic holds true then that still puts the former at around 3.9 seconds and that's phenomenal for rowing your own. It wouldn't be my daily driver and instead more of a weekend vehicle until my time here comes to an end.
Whoever defends M2 or 2 series as a whole really missed the point. Previous M2 is so great because it can actually fit 2 normal sized adult back there. New M2 is not only bigger and heavier, the rear seat space and roofline are actually worse than previous car. How is that possible? I don't know.
Great review, thanks. As one who is half American-Irish and half Latino (paternal grandma was indigenous Mexican and my Dad was born in Guadalajara), I can say you pronounced San Luis Potosî 90% correctly. "poh-toh-SEE" is the correct way. Well done!
Thanks for the video.
BMW already makes the car you want...it's called the Supra 3.0 6MT...already 500lbs lighter...why not just get a stick-shift Supra instead ?
Exactly.👍
The engine isn’t as good and it ain’t an m car
This is the modern version of my long gone 2001 E46 M3 2-door Manual .. one of best cars I've ever had ... Thanks !!
I keep saying this and just wait. People are going to want this car in 5 years
@Motoman delivered a complete M sermon today! Thanks mate. Brilliant video. 👌🏽
Touché:)
"dont complain that the car is to big". Right after "for the wishlist lets make the car 500lbs lighter".... or just make the car smaller...
Just a FYI, I came here from your G70 video you put out today.
The laptops on the dash ruin this car..
Come on BMW it’s NOT a Tesla..
Absolute home run... with the exception of the glass dash.... dislike that design immensely. All in all, huge props to the BMW people!
BMW has proven that a car-any car- with a stiff and well- engineered chassis could both be comfortable and civilized to drive under everyday conditions and perform astonishing feats on the racetrack.
Seeing the different reviews on this car is interesting, because some reviewers think it's a step backwards from the previous gen.
Yes, this was the most positive review I've seen by far. I think reality is somewhere in the middle.
M2cs👍This is a step backwards but yet not surprising.
I couldn’t think my E92 could get better looking but every time BMW comes with a new car it seems to be get better
Hold on tight, never let her go.
Truth!
What does the car gain from 4 inches more length ? Back seat room, trunk space, easier engine service access ... ?
This looks so much better in red than that baby blue…
Looks fantastic, but I wouldn’t swop my G29 Z4 for it based on looks.
I see M-M car reviews of interest and I’m all on it. Once again, M-M delivers the goods with no frills & no BS. Short/sweet & to the point with no gimmicks! Review is spot on as usual! I concur with your assessment. Well done. Car is mega; I do wish it was a bit lighter though. Outside of weight, this is my only criticism. It’s my BMW of choice. I even like/prefer it over the last iteration… cheers/B
OG M2 for the win!
definetly changing my F87 for this. this is the real deal, all F87 is just a beta version. this G87 is the finished M2 what it should have been
I agree to your design perspective. The Crown Jewel of this car is the rear quarter panel leading upto the c pillar/rear deck. It has that fat rear fenders screaming I am a rear wheel drive like the mz3 coupe and porsche 993 turbo. Homage to the e30 fender design, the front end is a bit lacking but the overall proportion, stance, and presence is spot on with the other m cars.
Yes! Exactly most idiots don’t understand what they are looking at , the longer wheel base makes it look better . I own e46 m3 lol
1:33
That brace on the engine is so massive. It’s like they’re taking this seriously
He did say its much stiffer than the old m2
I believe that picture is an error. I believe that brace is from the M4 CSL
ALSO ON WISHLIST: Individual Manufaktur Paints!?!?!?
How about BMW does what Porsche does with the T range? Base engine in the 2 series with some of the suspension from the M2 and a manual transmission for a price lower than the M2.
Different approach here. The engine is a HUGE part of this equation and is light years above other BMW inline sixes. Porsche on the other hand already has a great basic engine. Only real difference between each version is output - almost feels as if you are turning up the volume on the same engine.
@@MotoManTV so which would you take Motoman, Porsche Touring or new M2?🙂
Seems like every decent BMW is $70-110k no matter what you get. Weird. Love the car, but not the weird angles.
I use to be a BMW hater because of my last BMW experience I’m glad I gave BMW another chance I love me M2
Seats still crooked??
Too heavy
Makes you wonder what’s in store for the M4
I love the looks of this car.
I have one on order and since I am not tracking it I didn't get the carbon fiber package. I wanted the sunroof (I live in Florida) and the manual transmission. Love the car, you have got to see one before you pass judgement.
Cayman 4.0 is 30k more and I’d find it somehow.
Surprisingly, I really like the new body style and tech but what I’m disappointed in is they added the S58 engine at 453H.P. and only get 0-60 in 4.1 seconds. Meh. I realize there’s more bracing, it’s longer and wider, and and a disappointing 3900 lbs. but it seems like they’re going backwards. I searched for 2 years for a used 2018 M2 because I felt it was the perfect sized car with performance. At $73,000 there are much better choices to beat the performance stats than the 2023.🙁
BMW always underreports their 0-60 and HP
@@hardchemist yup it’s actually 3.7 verified with the 8 speed.
@@Bimmer_Bill I’d guess 3.9 with the manual and some practice.
A Mexican German car?
I was thinking of ordering a 2024 Mustang Dark Horse but the prices are the same as M2 so hmmmm...... Yeah, M2. Thanks for building this BMW! And thanks MotoMan for the review!!
Mustang has a V8 and a handbrake though, which might be enough to sway me. I'm between the same two cars.
@@FurkanCemTurfanda since the M2 is turbo the simple chip tuning options are outrageous bang for buck
I, too, am blown away by Dark Horse pricing. Once you get into that price range, there are MANY options and few would be prudent to pick the Mustang.
@@MotoManTV I spec'd a Mustang GT heavily and it was only $6K away from the Dark Horse. Perhaps the Tremec 6-speed, the beefed up engine bits, and the limited production numbers will be in its favor. Looking forward to your review, sir!
Sounds like BMW is piping in a throaty exhaust note through the speakers.
Don't complain? It's as large as old M4 and it's 1750KG! This is the "smallest" sports coupe they have left. It's absurd.
You have been doing this for at least 8 years Why only 250k subs
2:40
The front end looks similar to the 2012 M6. I don’t see much to complain about
Don’t complain that it’s bigger, just complain that it looks worse than the car it replaces? And man the screen that’s just stuck onto the dash looks so tacky.
Still leaps and bounds better than the interior it replaces
@@chamaldealwis9 with that screen? no chance. Maybe than the regular M2 sure, but not the M2 comp with the updated gauges, idrive and better seats.
@@blues3531 people complained about the previous gens screen now y'all are complaining about this 😂 I swear bmw critics are the hardest to please
🥸This is the Best looking M2 . E30 vibes . Dash looks ugly on video but seamless when in the car . And How old are you people complaining about it’s looks😂 ?
Looks absolutely better, previous one feels like it's still stuck in post-2000 visual aesthetics. That's why it feels boring, because you don't have any option than comparing previous m2 to other models. New m2 has it's own place and more character, especially with pony car vibes.
The front looks like a 2010 Dodge Magnum
I think I remembered seeing that front grille design before. Completely forgotten which one is it.
Like the new video format, keep it up guys
I'll take the automatic cuz' it's faster & better; however I somehow understand the manual need to be mindset 🇺🇲
im sad and happy to be apart of this era of internal combustion cars, the peak of IC cars but the near end of them especially in manunal form.
Did you not mentioned the same about 2019 F87 M2 Comp. 😊
Great review! Can’t wait my Black Saphire to arrive in May 🚀
Does anyone know if you can fit a road bike (front wheel off) in the trunk? How about skies?
I dont understand why this car is getting hate out the gate, "To fat to be furious"? really. This car has almost the exact same specs ilas the 6.4 hemi from the 292 SCATPACK Challeneger and Charger. This is coming from an inline 6cylinder turbo thats wild. Pulling from allmost the same powerband as an upgraded refreshed V8! These days we really are spoiled and Do Not take enough time to appreciate engineers behind these cars. It's impressive how they did that. I appreciate this review, i can tell you actually Appreciate modern engineering and quality cars
Thanks for noticing, Michael!
@@MotoManTV No, Thank you for an unbiased review. As consumers we want to know what it's like from a consumer point of view and based on your review i get a since that BMW treats this like a special edition type of car, with how "different" the specs and chassis materials are from other cars in the same class. Like for instance you mentioned the car Does hug the road and tight turns but only When those 255's get that weight on the outside tires from an inside turn, maybe i would want to know that as a consumer to see if i would need to upgrade the tires or keep shopping for the type of car im looking for. Thats what i mean, thats useful to know.
Hopefully the aftermarket will provide some relief. The front of this car makes the grills on the m3/m4 look good.
So this M2 is going to make the previous chassis feel dated in comparison an is why there is bemoaning. It’s still going to work well on narrow roads in Europe and is a great size for the US market. Nice analysis and presentation. 💯#funperpound #m2nirvana 11:00
It doesn't though. Lower power to weight than the last f87, less rear headroom, cast wheels, less standard CF, peakier boost, hideous styling. No thanks.
@@cwx8 Not to mention that the m240i is faster. The m2 (older one)out performed the lesser model when it launched. The m2 is a failure. Get a m240i and throw an aftermarket suspension on it
@@ToneysReviews what about F87 M2 competition? huh? That will ruin the m240i on the track.
@@kimeric7673 you do realize the m240i has been pitted against the comp and beat it. See throttle house
@@ToneysReviews No you are wrong. B58 can't beat the S55. m240i is not even a real M.
If only they would actually put real gauges in the car. The tack on screens really hurt an otherwise good effort
WOW!!!!!!!!! Great car which I ordered a few weeks ago. I can't wait for her to arrive🥶
I was going to buy one but the $10k markup killed it.
@@rembo183 Where is this markup you speak of?
It's as big as a mustang, the profile looks like a mustang, it's as heavy as a mustsng, so why not save money and just....
I may be mistaken but this M2 is nearly the same size as the previous generation's 4 series. Not a bad looking car at all.
The front lights in proportion to the grille looks like the current z4. (To me)
Actually looks better than the XM, i7, X7 - hold on this list is never going to end…..!!! But wait for the Competition or CSL - you know it will be even better!!
Manual, sunroof and standard seats for me.
Great car.
“Take 500 lbs out of it” - Yes! Great video as always thank you.
My pleasure.
My only complaint on the styling is that the grilles without any type of trim around the border makes it look a bit economy car-ish. I do like the overall shape of the grilles...
The M3 and M4 doesn’t have any trim around their grills either
I knew Baby Jesus wanted me to have this car!!
Long live the manual transmission.
With the M Performance Parts body kit, please. Skip the big wing, though. I want the CSL fixed bucket seats. Back seat delete plus a clubsport type of roll cage. In fact, I want a M2 CSL.
Not a bad idea . . . but as stated in the episode, not US$100,000.
Same old same old it’s heavier more power it’s bigger but better because it’s new, throttle house is where the reviews are they aren’t worried about upsetting a brand 😂
Nice review.
Looks best in red. ❤
Chunky, But Funky.
I'd pick it over an M4, but I may have second thoughts against an M3.
M, kudos to you and your cameraman, Toronto Red is kinda dull, but you guys made it really pop against the desert background.
I am going to steal your first line.
My guy says don’t complain that its too big and then says pull a quarter ton of weight out of it 🙃
6:02 additionally, of the M2 in character and price is approaching an M4, what exactly does it offer over other M cars? Its not exactly far fetched to suggest someone may just pursue the overall faster M4 vs its slower yet similar driving alternative
This has more potential for remapping
I love the new design but it seems to be polarizing for some reason that I fail to understand. My buddy who’s a big car guy absolutely hates the way it looks for some reason
Ugly is the new design language now I see.
Are your quoted 0-60's correct? I thought 4.1 and 4.3 quoted
Motoman is another reviewer who got convinced by BMW to love this pig. So far, only throttle house has kept it real.
ua-cam.com/video/5uT4s_NWBN0/v-deo.html
Do the rear sets fold down?
I hear there is a two year backlog. Not sure why these OEMs pay to have journalists come to press events only to make a few thousand a vehicle while the dealer network plays games and markups. Hence why my BMW M340 was replaced by a Tesla. If these traditional OEMs want to survive in the long run start building cars that people want and stop playing games.
I like the grill. It does remind of a classic Pontiac. By the way, I’m putting a deposit on one on Monday!
Love the look of this car…..with aftermarket carbon on it……it looks like it came right off the race track with those flared fenders. Waaaay cool. That glass dash sucks. Round analog looking gauges are the it factor. Take a lesson from Porsche.
The pornography of this car is the equivalent of Rosanne Barr sliding down a pole that has no grease on it. It’s hideous but like all things, only to my eyes. I would take a used M2 over this any day.
You certainly have a way with words:)
😆😆😆👍
U don't think I'd bother with the performance pack. I'd probably want the glass roof, and It would be extremely rare that I'd need to go over 155.
But tbh I'd rather have caymen S.
I'd like to see this with a huge swan mounted spoiler on it!
Moto Man- Would you buy a C8 Corvette or the M2?
VERY good question. Also a tough one, but does come down to money. The C8 I would want - aside from Z06 is US$85,000+. The M2 I would want is the basic car, no carbon roof but depending on cost, the carbon buckets. Manual, of course, If the delta were US$20,000, combined with a manual, I would lean M2.
There is a 3900 pounds elephant in the room
holy crap 3900 lbs! I haven't watched the video yet. I own a M2 CS that's lightened with CF Bucket seats and Titanium Exhaust and Alcon Front brakes. I bet mine it's 3300 lbs ish. BMW just doesn't care about weight anymore. They always try to make it up with a dialed in suspension so you can't "Feel" the weight.
@@MW-uy3np yup it's unbelievable how a some veriant of M4 weighs less than "small, nimble" M2.
This car shouldn't weigh more than 3500 lbs even with modern techs and everything, no excuse. I have a 2015 m235i I was looking for this gen M2 for the upgrade but.. maybe I will just look elsewhere.
It's good to see BMW can actually still make a driver's car........
It would be if they could. This is not a good example.
Understand that the press weren’t happy at the press launch in Arizona with the slow speed limits (noticed you weren’t pushing it?) and straight roads…..
Not certain where you heard that . . . BMW arranged for a stretch of road to be closed by the Maricopa County Sheriff. As for Arizona roads, I am proud Arizona State Sun Devil so in this episode as well as the BMW XM episode (ua-cam.com/video/sLvDkBtXSPM/v-deo.html), I ditched the drive route and went back to the roads I flogged my FC RX-7 & Supra back in the day . . .
@@MotoManTV Autocar - well done for ditching the route......local knowledge is a good thing!
Too bad you can't get the roof without a sunroof unless you option the $2600 carbon fiber roof. I never use sunroofs, but I won't be tracking the car either.
Sunroofs are great for hot weather
Why did BMW feel the need to copy the Honda Civic Type R rear end side 'vents'...
Two arms on the side mirrors are broken 😂
Crooked seats fixed??
Amen
With great power comes great corruption is the new saying.
It’s cool looking but by no means pretty. Still dig it for what it is. (And I can get a sunroof 😊)
#BABYJESUS
Not bad overall. Since everything is now the size of the vehicle above it 10, 20, 30 years ago, I view it as being the M3 of yore, available today. Especially at 3800lbs. It's no longer an M2. It's an M3.
The front failed
Nope, it’s still too heavy
....1.700kg+
Dislike the dash… looks cheap imo.
Is it just me, or does the profile look like a Mistang?
It’s Beyond Ugly. It’s just Poor Design. No design, really. Look at the front end! The square air intake with the curved ‘kidney’ grills - just doesn’t work!
