The Small World of Pokemon's Menu Sprites

  • For a long time now, Pokemon has been using 3D models ever since the shift back in 2013. Although many were disappointed or wished that the choice was reversed, there still was an aspect that remained in the beloved style - the menu sprites. Though, did that mean anything? And did they even last that long themselves?

There are so many facets towards pixel art that makes it so charming and timeless in comparison to the sprites.
Even though the change was made for simplicities sake, having the dexit and reduced dexs makes this change sort of irrelevant

In Gen 1 there were 11 sprites. You forgot the Nidoking/Statue sprite.

I've always loved the gen 3-5 menu sprites. They've always had so much charm. I was so sad when they were replaced in X and Y.
Nitpick, but I hate how inconsistent the spite sizes are in LGPE. If they weren't going to upscale all final evolutions, they should've either done it by size (ie: the biggest Pokemon in the dex get big sprites) or they should've only done it for Pokemon with Mega Evolutions. Or even only done it for legendaries. Idk, just some kind of pattern so that it isn't so haphazard.

    • @RetroNC
      @RetroNC  14 днів тому +8

I agree so much! If every final stage at the very least would have gotten the high-res, polished bigger sprites, then LGPE easily would take the w for best menu sprites, even with them having no animations comparing to others in mind :o

At least some fanmade sprites do exist that solve the LGPE issue.
I’ve seen them in that quiz website where you can name all Pokémon from memory.
I don’t like how raichu, ninetales etc get upscaled sprites but their alolan forms don’t get changed since Sun and moon but the website makes them how they should be.

I find it really funny how Game Freak ditched sprites to make work easier, yet, kept the same battle system, didn't even try to make the Pokemon's powers to come from the right places (like water related attacks from Blastoise coming from it's cannons, maybe with a special animation for it)... it seams Pokémon Company wanna make the most money out of the smallest budget and work time for Game Freak

@@RetroNC oooh... I didn't know about that, but I also barely watched stuff about the Switch games and can't play them because I only have two 10 year old laptops and no money for a Nintendo Switch. Still sucks it took that long for them to fix that, could've happened AT LEAST on the 3DS already...
And tbh I wouldn't wanna buy a barely finished game for R$300 (Nintendo never lower prices nor adapts them for Brazil, selling every game for almost 1/5 of a minimal salary, and they used to be even more expensive a few years ago since the games costed R$350~400 and the minimal salary was also lower [R$1039~1240 from 2020 to 2022], I kinda despise Nintendo nowadays due to that, despite most their products always being overpriced here at my country tbh, even the Wii wasn't popular here, on the Wii's golden age everyone was buying ps2s around here and the NDS was their only console that was kinda accessible, as well as the NES and SNES, on the late 90s/early 2000s, with the NES clones being sold as fake ps1s...)

@@ShaftCommander I'm well aware Pokémon barely changes their combat system because even slight changes already make people bitch about it, as well as the fact people buy a pokemon game expecting specific things, and that a multimillionaire company won't risk their precious money to make a more expensive game under the possibility of it fail and ruin their billionaire franchise. And I have also read about how pathetically low the pokemon games budgets are, with also not that many people working on each new game, specially for such a huge franchise.

@@Gamebuilder2000 while this is true, every Pokemon still gets a unique vector illustration that is used as their menu icon, which I believe is what the original comment is referencing. Just as much labor to create those as it would be to create a bitmap sprite and keep a series tradition alive.

I adore the gen 3-5 sprite style. So goofy yet it's clear what Pokémon it is. Gen 6-7 is neat too, same but more refined. I personally really dislike the giant sprites of gen 8 and am glad we've moved on to mini artworks on the menu in replacement. The only reason I even dislike the big sprites is the lack of consistency with it. Dedenne gets a big sprite but not Morpeko? Unfezant gets a big sprite yet Tranquil remains the same size as Pidove? And Alolan forms seem to get forgotten too with small menu sprites.

Big fan of the gen 6/7 style menu sprites. I think they were perfect. Some looked goofy but they’re menu sprites they’re supposed to be small and lack some details. They even went above and beyond to give asymmetrical Pokémon a second menu sprite for when they had to flip them in amie/pelago.
I really didn’t like the larger more detailed menu sprites some Pokémon got starting in let’s go because I feel like it defeats the point of using pixel art menu sprites at all, and also they were super inconsistent which Pokémon did and didn’t get them. Even in SwSh, it wasn’t every final stage (ditto), and it wasn’t only final stages (wailmer) that got them.
I can appreciate that the BDSP/SV style sprites are often in the same poses as the old pixel art sprites were but most don’t and feel so soulless being just the 3D model in the default pose with a filter over it, but hey at least they fit the artstyle of the games they’re in unlike let’s go and SwSh.
