If you want corporations to act responsibly, then make sure managers all along the chain of command are personally responsible for the damage their decisions cause. No weaselling out with contract clauses or insurances. If their own livelihood and retirement are on the line, they might consider their decisions more carefully.
I agree with you. On the other hand, one ill-considered decision, or an accident caused by someone else, or by a dead animal on the tracks, should not be the end of someone's otherwise-competent and even-handed career.
I agree. An unsolicited offer of $1,000 means they KNOW they screwed up, and are hoping to get out from under it all as cheaply as possible so their stock options don't devalue.
The toxic aftermath of the train derailment is horrifying and I wonder if Norfolk is offering so little for two reasons: To offer appropriately high dollar amounts is close to admitting responsibility. There may be conditions attached to accepting the $1000. The fine print might include language which prevents individuals from suing them because the corporation has to know that this is a crisis that will not go away anytime soon, possibly not in our lifetime. Those poor people will most likely suffer physical effects which range from immediately severe, to underlying, simmering debilitations for decades, along with chronically compromised lifelong autoimmune conditions. Norfolk is gaslighting the suffering residents in attempt to save massive amounts of money. Pretty much standard playbook for big corporations who hold out in taking responsibility for environmental disasters until they are finally forced to do so. Force them now. Don't wait.
Force it, don't let it become a new Flint. Flint, MI still does not have clean water and has bottled water pick up every week. Snyder got to retire in peace.

A lot of people are paying attention. This isn't the first time a major chemical company has been egregiously careless and it won't be the last time. We have to pay attention.
And it can happen to so many other towns. I grew up in Ohio hearing the trains not far from my home. I moved elsewhere in the state, and my daughter's school is near an active rail line. I am truly, truly grateful that Stephen and his writers made a point of bringing up the horrific disaster in Ohio, when so many other news outlets are either not bringing it up outright, or just very lightly touching on it. This is an extremely dangerous situation with probably unimaginable long-term consequences for the environment and peoples' health...and what Norfolk Southern tried to offer as compensation...is absolutely abhorrent. Equally disgusting is the fact the authorities are telling people it's safe to breathe the air there DESPITE the health problems this is clearly causing (the nausea and such). This would be as if someone went down into the sewers of a place like, say, New York, and starting helping themselves to a raw sewage cocktail because the authorities told them the contents were safe to consume.

And 80 isn't even that old these days. Must be jealousy, since most Americans would rather sit around binge-watching Netflix and eating Doritos than take care of themselves, and most are so self-absorbed and arrogant they insult every other human being in sight, while President Biden shows a Fred Rogers level of concern for every person he meets. A fun fact about that derailment in Palestine: "After several tragic rail accidents, the Obama administration adopted a rule in 2015 requiring trains carrying crude oil and ethanol to have modern braking systems. If you want corporations to act responsibly, then make sure managers all along the chain of command are personally responsible for the damage their decisions cause. No weaselling out with contract clauses or insurances. If their own livelihood and retirement are on the line, they might consider their decisions more carefully.

"$1000" inconvenience check?!? People, the environment, the future is going to be messed up for _decades!_ 😡
The toxic aftermath of the train derailment is horrifying and I wonder if Norfolk is offering so little for two reasons:
To offer appropriately high dollar amounts is close to admitting responsibility.
Don't wait.

I live in East Palestine, Ohio. Can't believe what happened to our town. People around the country don't even realize how serious this was and is. I don't want to live here anymore! This situation is not going to get better. When your home and vehicles and land is covered with the crud from days of burning/ black smoke and toxic chemicals in the air inside and outside of your homes and businesses. I live less than 1/10 of a mile from Leslie Run Creek that has the dead fish, frogs and pollution. Norfolk Southern ruined our town and things will never be the same.
Do you need anything? Would like to help if I can.
I'm so sorry about what you're going through. We need to make these train cars safer, and your town needs a lot of support.
Norfolk should be forced to buy out the town. Not just the evacuated zone, but the entire town.

They should sue Trump and Republicans. It was their brilliant idea to deregulate the railroad and no longer require brakes.
If that happens, they will go bankrupt, fire all of their employees, and sell their assets to a new group of investors consisting of all the same people who run the company now. Then they'll re-incorporate under a new name and offer most of their employees their jobs back at 75% their old salary, but not the ones who are close to retirement. Equally disgusting is the fact the authorities are telling people it's safe to breathe the air there DESPITE the health problems this is clearly causing (the nausea and such).
