Ali Essig is a plant-based nutritionist, the founder of PlantWhys, and the creator of plant-based courses and memberships where she helps women over 40 lose weight and overcome emotional eating with a plant-based diet.
As a mother of six children, including twin baby boys, Ali found herself rushing to the emergency room with her 37 year old husband who had just suffered a stroke. After multiple tests, doctors found no clear answers and encouraged their family to avoid saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol and to eat more fiber.
Ali dived deep into the research and found that eating a plant-based diet would not only decrease her husband’s risk of stroke, but also decrease ALL types of chronic disease.
After switching her family of 8 to a plant-based diet and going back to school to become a nutritionist, Ali now helps women who want to eat plant-based and lose weight, go from feeling lost and aimless to having clarity and direction with their diet because they have been able to overcome their emotional triggers.
She regularly shares powerful plant-based insights on her Instagram / plantwhys and she demonstrates how to cook easy plant-based recipes on her UA-cam Channel: / @plantwhys

I read that the only true carnivorous bear is the polar bear. That is because of the Artic climate and the scarcity of plants in that environment. All other bears are omnivores. The other bears (grizzly, black, etc.) eat 90% plants for most of the year. They eat foliage, berries, honey, etc. They only start to eat animal prey as the time for hibernation approaches. So for just a few months, these bears eat animals so that they can have enough of what they need to go through hibernation. This is how I see humans. They can survive on plants pretty much exclusively. They only need animal products if faced with an emergency situation or are in an environment where they have no access to plant foods.

I'm 62 and vegan. i read that back in the 1950s, average life expectancy in the US was just mid 50s. My paternal grandfather and great-grandfather passed away from heart attacks, collapsing on the spot. They were 57 and 56, respectively. They were both born in the later 1800s and grew up on farms, so they didn't know any better about diets. It is only now with prescriptions and medical procedures like stents, bypass, and open-heart surgery that people are living into their 60s and beyond, despite a diet full of animal products. There are only 3 paths, as I see it. Continuing with an animal-based diet and having some type of premature disability/death OR taking prescriptions and having medical procedures OR changing to a plant-based diet.

Thank you for sharing. I am so glad that you mentioned that scripture. I like the hint you gave of which faith you are. I am also of that faith (church). I have pondered the scripture about eating meat sparingly for years. It has been a boon to my thoughts on food. In the same book of scripture we are told in essence that food is to be a delight.

I love this. Good job mom! It is going to benefit her children so much. They will address things in a flexible manner, and not get so stressed.
No TV during the summer--I do not know about that. Television has content: how to, information about people in other countries, etc. They can get ideas as to what job they may want to pursue. If they are not watching tv, they might be outside getting hooked up with bad actors.
Scholarship--That doctor who gave her the scholarship during Covid must feel great seeing her now. Good things coming from what he granted her.
She has done a phenomenal job handling all those individuals. I am sorry what she went through. It looks like she is now at the great calm place.

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to her story and accomplishments. I've experienced trauma in life when I became an amputee. Plant based eating is a priority in our lives. I am a Respiratory Therapist, who has lost her job. I want to pursue a career change to becoming a nutritionist. To encourage this lifestyle in a small retirement community. In teaching smoking cessation, I have also used the 15-minute wait and see if you really want a cigarette. I have encouraged a timer to take the mind off of the desire of smoking. So when the timer dings, the desire has moved on to a different task or desire.
Thank you for sharing your story and journey. You are easy to listen to and encouraging.
May God Bless you and yours continually...

Good show AJ, I like how she considers the brain because that was my problem, change your way of thinking first then the diet comes easily. I love The Starch Solution book by Dr McDougall, after I added potatoes, rice, and beans it became soo much easier. I also eat sprouts in the salads, easier to chew and easy to grow.

Well it could have helped decrease inflammatory processes that happen in the brain after the stroke and prevent working neurons from communicating. I switched my mom to a Whole Foods plant based diet post stroke and almost 2 years post stroke, she’s moving her leg and arm and speaking more, this was after the change in diet.

Since most strokes are due to cardiovascular damage, l followed the diet in the book “arresting and reversing heart disease” by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, which is an oil free, Whole Foods plant based diet. I also have the book “how not to die” for more recipes.
