I cannot stand super high slit with the entire leg hanging out and then they always stick it out like we don't see it. It looks like a Barbie is going to get a leg ripped off. Slits can be so subtly sexy and even classy, but too high and bad posing ruins them.
Watching this breakdown made me realise why I've turned to royal fashion for inspo rather than celebrity style in recent years. The ongoing uglification of the red carpet makes me sad - it's all so try-hard, clunky, and faux avant garde. That said, the red gown on Cara Delevingne at 18:05 is simply stunning! Such a classic look - dramatic, but still feminine. I instinctively know that it's a beautiful dress, but I love hearing you explain *why* it works so well.
Taylor, Emily, and Cara definitely did their homework. Their dresses had the right color for the silhouette, had elegant designs, and were tailored/fitted cleanly to their proportions.
I feel like the aim of a lot of red carpet outfits (for both the star and the designer) is for the dress to attract buzz and be considered cool and creative, rather than for the star to look beautiful in something that suits them. The white column dress proves this point; among all the outfits in this video that one stands out not because it’s avant garde or edgy but because it’s simple and flattering.
Everything migraine does is cruel and despicable considering who she is. Catherine can make cheaper clothing look elegant and classy while carparkle makes expensive clothing look cheap and trashy.
Selena's red vine dress was a miss all the way around. I agree the skirt needed volume to work. The top looked like the cups were too small so she was not only spilling out of the top but could have used some support also.
Beebs, your ability to explain what does and doesn’t make fashion choices work is so helpful! Additionally, your vocabulary and communication skills never fail to impress me. Thank you and Happy New Year! ❤
Emily Blunt in that white column dress was my winner. Simple and elegant. She wore the dress -- it didn't wear her. The rest of them, except for Taylor Swift's crop top and skirt (which I think would be better as a dress) were definitely misses. Sam Smith's was the worst.
Emily's was my favourite. Salma looked like a retired Dominatrix. For a woman who's almost 60, Halle Berry looked trashy in that ridiculous slit. I agree with you about the flowers and bows Beebs. None of them did it right. They should ask Princess Catherine for fashion advice. She makes the cheapest outfits look like a million bucks where else Hollywood just turned millions to rubbish.
Salma looks like she just rushed over from her part time gig as a dominatrix. 😮 Hallie looks the worst and Nicole's flowers - the hip flower is ok but not the shoulder. And her hair! Did she run out of time?
I can't stand it when someone with a high slit down the dress sticks their leg out. Angelina Jolie was the first for this dramatic move and now everyone does it and it's just not an attractive pose. IMO
You'd think they'd practice to get the best result. Maybe there ISN'T anything better, when you're trying to stand on strappy two-story stilettos. I commented elsewhere on this site that if you ask a butcher to show you a leg of lamb (poor lamb), the presentation will be better than these red carpet shank-bearers can ever manage. Well, it's not as though they give a half a hoot what we peons think about their superior beauty and fashion 🤣, so let's just continue to have our laughs ... and know that we are right.
I had to check the username because I made a very similar comment to yours under one of the videos. :D I hate that too, it's just stupid - and Angelina was ridiculed for it. And then it suddenly became popular.
I know I’m getting old as I find the majority of dresses either ugly or showing far too much flesh, I prefer simple elegance. The white Valentino with separate sleeves was superb, simple and chic, if only I had the figure for such a style
My worst pick is Rooney Mara’s curtain dress. She even looked depressed in it. Also the guy with the black ballon thing. Honorable mention to Salma Hayek’s shoes
I get what you mean by the flowers. Kidman’s dress would have been much better without them. Although her hair…. I think she’s going for a rock ‘n’ roll look but it looked too sloppy for that dress. I don’t know what do you think? Also, what’s with all these extremely high slits? Honestly, I like a dress that leaves a little bit to mystery. Don’t give us all the goods. I’m not a prude, but I also believe in being classy and some of those slits just look a little too raunchy for my taste. What do you think?
Oh that poor cat and the flower. I needed that laugh, really Beebs , you don’t know how much I needed that laugh. The look on the cat’s face was priceless.
I remember when Nicole Kidman was a young actress in Australia and still had her gorgeous red curly hair, and I wish she would go back to something more natural, if that’s even possible now. The stick-straight blonde non-hairstyle does nothing for her now she’s no longer a dewy starlet. Especially since she’s so tall and thin.
A sleek bun at her neck or braid twisted into a bun would have really helped her look and wouldn’t have competed with the shoulder flower. Loose straight hair is a mess and not polished enough for this setting.
Great commentary Beebs!! You explain things so well. I think the only gowns that worked “as is” were Taylor Swift’s and Cara Delivigne’s. I do wish they would give up those hip high slits though. Most were fixable, like you explained, I just wanted to rip those ugly tan flowers off Hallie’s dress and sew in smaller ones ( if you have to have them) , in a same colour right on that high collar and the thigh and the n it might work. Mind you I thought the super high slit didn’t work for Hallie, it made her legs look kinda chunky, and I really think that’s actually not how her legs are, she has a great figure. Really enjoyed this, Thank you so much 😊❤Edited to add: Sam Smith 🤮 just ridiculously bad, and I didn’t think Salma’s outfit was red carpet at all, usually she nails it!
I totally agree with you about the flowers on Nicole Kidman's dress, it would have looked absolutely stunning without them. Thanks for another great video explaining and educating us on why some fashion looks just don't work. I'm pretty good at judging what works and doesn't personally but couldn't always explain why so love to watch you to give the reasons.
Cara's dress is absolutely divine....love the colour, so rich and vampy. With the volume of the cut and the shape with that fabric it is totally decadent.
The nice Joan Rivers of fashion, love the takes on these fashion choices. Thought of koi with some of these fashion choices. On point on all comments. Love you, Beebs!
Nicole Kidman dress would have looked better with only 1 flower either one I think. Hally Berrys neck flowers definitely shouldn’t be there the hip ones may have been ok.
Sam Smith's outfit is an homage I believe to a costume worn by David Bowie in the early 70s, one of his most iconic looks, but it doesn't have the style of Kansai Yamamoto - Grace Jones was also the best breastplate wearers in the 1980s, but smooth and sleek and well fitted.
I like Taylor Swift’s outfit. I love the color and it looks really good on her. She’s been giving some good looks lately. Sam Smith’s “outfit” was the worst. It’s just so uncomfortable looking. Sam looked better wearing suits.
Agreed. I also don't like when so much boob shows though not that many in tonight's video seemed too exposed but I find no class or sexiness when an excess amount of boob is shown. It just looks cheap. I like to see elegance and class and a bit of sexy, too, if appropriate.
I’m glad you mentioned Sam smith, Sam has a misdirection when it comes to fashion. Sam doesn’t know how to use the body to carry off what is being worn, it’s like Sam thinks that’s arty, that’s edgy I’ll wear it. Sam’s not David Bowie, Little Richard or Bjork, they knew how to move to look comfortable in everything. Sam looks as if it was plunked it on, and that is all it takes to wear a one of a kind outfit. Nothing Sam wears looks natural, it looks like a person who is trying but not succeeding. Sam’s devil costume at the Grammys just looked cheap, not edgy, but Amazon. Sam needs to listen to other peoples advice, or get new stylists. It is memorable for all the wrong reasons.
The 'half-exposed breasts and side slit to mid-hip look' does nothing to suggest these women reject being treated as sexual objects. It's TOO MUCH!!! Salma appears to have had facial surgery. Once actors/actresses no longer resemble the person I remember from a good role I stop thinking of them as that person. I wonder what effect it has on their children if they have them?
Emily blunt , I love her style and ofcourse with her body shape ,the dress looks perfect , simple yet stylish , sexy but not over the top . Classic beautiful dress ❤
The Anne Hathaway dress would've been 💯% better in a different color, better neckline and no weird fringe by the knees. Otherwise I like the 'idea' of it. Haha yes, it looks like someone shredded the bottom of Selena's dress. I like your fix idea! 16:43 Yikes!! The Alexander McQueen dress is awful! I'm with you, I really like Alexander McQueen and am so surprised to see this disaster, lol.
The red dress at the end was spectacularly beautiful. It is my favorite color. The shoes were perfect, not too small not too big and the color was a mix of the red of the dress and the brightness of the necklace. The dress was beautiful viewed from every side. Fantastic.
Loved this video Beebs! It showed me that some designers don't think their designs through and end up sticking on some flowers or embellishments to fix flaws in design. And what a shame that expensive gowns sometimes do nothing for the wearer. But a good dress shows itself immediately.
@@mrsterious5845 I think you've hit the nail on the head there. It's like they've forgotten that an actual human being is supposed to not only wear the garment, but look good while doing it.
If Halle had lost the flowers and lowered the slit/hemline down to mid-thigh, it would have been a stunner. If the waves in her hair were finger waves more sculpted to swoop across part of her forehead, it would have added old Hollywood glam. It seems worse somehow when they got so close to something wonderful than when somebody just totally missed the mark. My fave is Emily's dress. I always prefer understated elegance to glitz and glam, but Taylor and Cara both look stunning too.
While I agree that Selma Hayek's leather dress could have worked, I thought that the center part on her hair was harsh and aged her significantly. To me, center parts are hard to pull off and don't work on a lot of people, especially as they get older.
My favorite dress was the white one on Emily Blunt. I also love the styling, with the hair pulled back and the only touch of color coming from the chandelier earrings.
Again, agree that the midnight blue cropped top and long skirt Taylor Swift wore lends itself best to someone how is tall and narrow. As banging as their bodies are, the same dress would not have been as successful on Salma Hayek, Sofia Vergara, or Scarlett Johansson.
I agree with you on the Selena dangling red-vine dress. The color is spectacular on her, but the "vines" would've looked more finished and refined had they had a soft, semi sheer skirt underneath. In my eyes, I don't even think they would've needed to be sewn to the skirt, they could've remained loose as they were shown on the red carpet, but moving OVER a solid panel instead of air and bare legs. If the intention was to show her legs, then I would've cut the vines off and made a mini dress.
Does anyone remember the designer in Project Runway or Next in Fashion who used a lot of macrame? I think that is what Anne Hathaway’s dress was. Halle should fire her stylist.
Thank you. Great video! The balloon-guy at 3:54 was hideous beyond belief. I really wish they’d move on from that let’s-have-one-leg-sticking-out trend. To me it looks like they ran out of fabric after creating some huge bulky, poufy thing over the hips and/or the back. My favourite was probably the white dress worn by Emily Blunt at 8:53. At 10:03 I think I liked the dress except I couldn’t really see it due to the pink monstrosity of the opera coat. The rich, deep red at 18:06 is to die for - so fabulous. If only they had managed to buy enough of the fabric so the lady’s leg didn’t have to look like it was struggling to escape to some other place that gown would have been my number 1.
You saved the best for last imo. Love, love Cara's dress! But with my short neck and short but well-proportioned torso, I would never be able to carry it off. Beautiful dress!
Nicole Kidman---I would've kept the flower at the shoulder, and lost the one at the hip. Or perhaps, I would've moved the hip one to the shoulder to make it even MORE of an asymmetrical contrast with the long sleeve on the opposite arm. OR, I would've removed all of them from the shoulder and hip and wrapped them around the wrist of the bare arm, like a huge corsage. They way it showed, they looked, as you said, "tacked-on", almost as if they were excess material they wanted to use up.
I like the silhouette of Anne Hathaway's dress, but not the material or the deep scoop neck, which imo, is a bit too wide. It gives the bodice a too small appearance. Selena Gomez's "dress" is a nice shade of red and the silhouette works (if one imagines an actual skirt in place of the vines). But the vine skirt gives it a very Jane from Tarzan of the Apes or Masters of the Universe appearance. It was the MTV VMAs so it suits the event (I'm old enough to have watch Madonna's performance of Like a Virgin in 1984, as well as Prince's performance of Cream in 1991, which proved only Prince could truly carry off butt revealing chaps) Selma Hayak: Did she just drop in from space? Is another Matrix film in the works and she wants to be a part of it? For me, the outfit looks theatrical. Maybe that was what she was going for. Sam Smith: rocking Diseased Amoeba Chic. Breastplate lady (missed her name): No, just no. The Roman gladiator , soldier look works only for Roman gladiators and soldiers. The pink dress/opera coat combination reminds me of hoop skirts, like something Scarlett O'Hara would wear. Kidman's dress is nice. The flowers seem silly. No part of Halle Berry's dress is working for me. Do not like. The Alexander McQueen dress: Didn't catch the woman's name but was she having the worst day in history? The last dress: wow, for the dress. The heels? Eek.
I agree with most of what you said...Taylor and Emily looked fabulous... however Salma looked nonsensical and almost amusing because both her dress and styling was HORRENDOUS!!!
How, how did I miss this!! You were so spot on with everything. I’m not even going to consider the blow up doll. Worst were the pink opera coat disaster & the pink flower stick ons. Best is always Taylor Swift because I’ve never seen her in anything bad. So, I’m discounting her and giving best to Salma Hayek’s leather ensemble minus the necklace and the stunning red dress at the end. Flower pouf & all. Thanks Beebs! From Oregon with ♥️ Jessica
The fabric on Shania's dress reminded me of a cheap Barbie dress. It looks good until stretched out and gets sheer, if that makes sense 🥴 Halle's just didn't seem flattering. The clump of flowers on her hip and it wasn't a pretty color. Plus the hair, I don't know if they were trying to reflect the flowers with the bangs, but I didn't like it. Cara was impeccable!
I cannot stand super high slit with the entire leg hanging out and then they always stick it out like we don't see it. It looks like a Barbie is going to get a leg ripped off. Slits can be so subtly sexy and even classy, but too high and bad posing ruins them.
I agree. The high slit and then they all have to stick the leg out like a bunch of copy cats. It looks dumb.
Emily Blunt has really good style. She never looks overly sexed up or trashy (like so many others do)

Selena's red vine dress was a miss all the way around. I agree the skirt needed volume to work. The top looked like the cups were too small so she was not only spilling out of the top but could have used some support also.
Agree with Beebs, she needs the neutral underlining to flow into a skirt to support those vines.
She needs to go for dresses with structure on the top like Vivienne Westwood
Low neckline and tall slit-one or the other.

And with all that available funds......still
Salma, living up to the Balenciaga brand, married the owner,..... No one should support this brand if you care about children or if you anti-woke
Does anyone remember the designer in Project Runway or Next in Fashion who used a lot of macrame? I think that is what Anne Hathaway’s dress was. Halle should fire her stylist.
The pink coat should have been a 1/2 wrap overskirt without feathers.
Rooney Mara’s dress was vintage AMcQ and it was a runway dress.
I thought Halle berries dress was horrible! Omg
I agree, it also makes her look 'heavy' and her hips look odd.
The opera coat should have been left home....
Another great video Beebs 😊 Do you think Ms Hathaway’s dream catcher number might have looked okay in another colour?
Yes, totally!
Burgundy would have been a better color.
6:25 how bad is it that I know you prefer yellow and “Real Housewives Recap Jen” prefers blue.
Too much UA-cam for me 😅😂
Happy New Year Beebs!
Happy new year!
Clara(?) Red gown. Gorgeous
Thanks Beebs! I always enjoy your critiques.
Good evening BEEBS, I’m with you on the very unnecessary flowers. Taylor and Emily stole the show.
It was the MTV VMAs so it suits the event (I'm old enough to have watch Madonna's performance of Like a Virgin in 1984, as well as Prince's performance of Cream in 1991, which proved only Prince could truly carry off butt revealing chaps)
Selma Hayak: Did she just drop in from space?
The heels? Eek.
Happy new year Beebs❤
Love your pretty purple too😁
Imo bedt by miles Cara...wordt by miles...inflatable man, close 2nd pink feathers and giant pink coat😊
Taylor Swift and Emily blunt were gorgeous.
Very interesting!
My favorite dress was the last one, worn by Cara, dark red ball gown with the shoulder flower embellishment! Divine.
I agree with most of what you said...Taylor and Emily looked fabulous... however Salma looked nonsensical and almost amusing because both her dress and styling was HORRENDOUS!!!
Cara looked stunning!
cara's dress was the most striking...and that balloon thing was ridiculous .
I know when I like something and I love that you tell me why.
The last one was my favorit!
