    I like the work you did, and the fact your anvil was so solid that you didnt even make the rivet move when striking the metal. GREAT JOB!!

    Last, (really first) nice video, very helpful to see it done before trying to undertake it for the first time. Other people might be able to make “better” tongs, but I like how you simplified the steps, and made it seem perfectly feasible that anyone could do it.

    Great tong Demo Blacksmith, I got caught out with a phone call; I forgot my stock was in the fire and it melted to the base of my fire. So next time no phone at the forge.... Happy New year..

    NEWB Q. of The Day: I need vocabulary for exactly how you used these words in this video. "Boss", and "Offset". Seeing the work being done is obviously HUGE for helping me, but I have literally never made anything. My forge is in the mail. Thanks for the awesome vids and your humble manner and intelligent focus on particular content!

    Excellent video! offsets, etc. well explained. I'll definitely be trying some of these features on my next tongs.
    I'd second some of the other commenters below in that I'd love to get a closer look at that vice & maybe your hammers too.

    Very nice tongs. Could you possible post a video highlighting the hammers you were using? One looks to have a rounded face (maybe on both sides?), and another looked to be stubby with a fuller end. I've yet to find a hammer(s) I like for tong making. Also a view of your vice would be nice. Tks!

    Hi Craig, great video! Where do you get you tong blanks? Could you maybe attach a link somewhere of they're available online? Is it likely that I could get some locally? I'm not a farrier, just a smithing enthusiast.

    Nice tongs, great job at explaining the details too. I don't understand why you'd want them to swing open more than finger width. Is it judging criteria for competition?

  • @lookitcrashed
    @lookitcrashed 10 років тому

    For the tongs blanks, you said the reigns were 3/8" but was size are the ends for the boss/jaws, 5/8", 3/4"?

  • @wilderbrooks7478

    Lots of folks asking about the hammers. Craig is a farrier, and an absolute wizard in the forge. The first and main hammer he uses is a farriers rounding hammer, looks like a two pound. Who makes that specific one I can’t say, but they’re widely available from any Farrier's supply shop, lots of different brands, makers, sizes, and designs to choose from, but they’re all the same basic thing, a hammer. They have a flat face on one side, and a slightly rounded face on the other. The second is commonly referred to as a cross peen hammer. Basically the same as a rounding hammer, only instead of a rounded face, it has what is essentially a filleting die on one side of the head. Again, lots of makers, and sizes, and can be bought from a farriers supply.

      Its a Justin,made by Pat Connor. I have several Justin’s. 2lb turning hammer,1.5lb cone hammer and a 1lb ball peen that I had Pat make for me. They are wonderful hammers.

    I reckon you could save some more time by partially quenching the jaw and boss before putting the last offset in the reins to make them line up left and right. This inertial distortion and the extra work associated with it could probably be avoided that way.

    @ lauren; when you have a bunch of men, or even just a few men, together in the same room for any period of time they're going to talk about one of two things; sports or women. now depending on who you're talking to these two subjects can either capitalize on all the talk going around the room, or just make a glancing pass. the point is you could easily ask "how do you turn a carpenter into a dishwasher: hand him a washrag and position him in front of the sink" he might need some help facing it too.
    gender disparity is a good thing, we'll crack jokes about it too, don't demean us men by thinking that you've never made a joke or two at our expense. we all have our roles and nobody is less for it.
