Seriously almost made me tear up! So pure, so good, so right! I'm such a patriot at heart, anything like this gets me. Can Vermont please stand up, Bravo
Happy Birthday Morgan!! 🎂🎉🎊 Your little town is really lovely. That town hall meeting was really cool, how neat to see the community get together as friends and neighbors,to make decisions about their town. I love the fact that there is a pot luck afterwards, really focuses on the true sense of community. I teared up when that woman's son stood up and said happy birthday and then everyone sang to her. That adorable little girl with the reddish pony tails was so cute! And the lady who needed help with the post...was so sweet....I want to live near a town like that...
Thank you! And here's some insider info for you that will you show how small a town we live in. The guy who wished his mom a birthday is my buddy Alfred. You might have seen him in a few of my videos. And HE is that adorable little red haired girls dad!
TBH, I've never heard of this aspect of the American democracy. After this video, I actually went onto Google maps to check out your location and all. Don't ever leave. It seems a wonderful thing you've got going there.
Happy birthday Morgan!!! This was a great video!! Thank you for sharing a wonderful tradition in your town. You are correct saying that this would be such a wonderful way for us all to do our town/city meetings. Made me think of the young America.
Cool video and what an interesting town with some very cool history. This prompted me to google Peacham Vt, and I learned a ton. I live in Texas and the history of the North East is so different. It is a lot of fun to learn about. Thanks for sharing.
Just back watching all of Gold Shaw Farm's videos, Nov 1, 2021 this was best so far!! Omgosh how wonderful this exists!! Im originally from the South, Love love those homemade quilts!! Just a great video.🤗❤🙏
Awe, that little red head girl was ADORABLE!!! So cute!!! Fun u brought us along to ur town meeting! Just live seeing how others live etc....ur commentary in the dry meeting was funny! I almost stopped watching then, but it kept me going and glad I did! Blessings!!
Many towns in New Hampshire have a similar version of town meetings. In my town, we have a meeting to discuss and even amend what will be voted on in a day in March, usually the second Tuesday. These town meetings are Democracy in action. I prefer town meetings over city councils that are usually in the larger cities.
Your town meeting was very inspiring. My small town in western Massachusetts has town meeting in June. I like how Vermont has it for the whole state! Love the process and seeing all the folks come out to support the town. Happy Birthday Morgan and what a cool way to spend your day! Thanks for sharing.
At the local mall in a town called Citrus Heights named for the orchards of the past, I saw a museum type display stating Citrus Heights history. It stated that the first elementary school was established by unanimous vote to tax themselves to fund the school. I was like "UNANIMOUS!!??". I'm usually opposed to democracy as it is hijacked by money-as-god, but to read about democracy working as it should sure opened my eyes. This video just reminded me of that. Thanks for sharing Morgan. Happy 13-month-belated birthday.
@@GoldShawFarm Could not agree more. It's been a dramatic but welcome change for us coming from the overpopulated bay area to peace, quiet, and community.
I particularly liked the assortment of pre-adults in the "congregation". I looked at one of the town minutes and they mentioned a cool thing about the library and that they are updating or creating (?) a town website. I think you should contribute :) Now to the Farmer's market video as I am all about Farmer's (hmm, is it one farmer or all the farmers?) markets these days, haha. Oh, and while there is no hiding behind the ballot box, it sure was a nice little box. They should leave it up as a comment box the rest of the year. Or for tips (or taxes.....). And! Happy Birthday!!
Awesome! I'm so glad somebody out there enjoyed that. I'm a wicked Highlander geek and I find that I end up muttering those weirds each time I swing my machete!
Wow, so moved by the community spirit. Almost thought about moving there to settle. However, suddenly recognized that I tends to forget that I am not white. Will they welcome us there?
We would for sure love it! I always told him when the kids are older I’m moving up to Maine or Northern VT! We visit Manchester VT probably a few times a month it’s only 45 mins from us. I’ve always loved the small towns where everyone knows everyone and you know your neighbors name. One day we will live in one of those! There’s always a need for automotive repair, we’ll just move our shop with us!
Great idea about a potluck! I don’t know many towns small enough for this to work very well, but it looks great. And how do things get settled the rest of the year?
I'm in GA, where lawmakers meet in back rooms with leaders of big industries and get $ shoved in pockets to pass laws that benefit said big industry leaders. For example, auto dealerships paid off lawmakers to pass the current 'ad valorem' tax. It's in place of sales taxes on cars. But the kicker is, if you've paid sales tax on a car and then brought it to GA when you move here, you get to essentially pay that sales tax again, being double taxed! Except they can claim it's not sales tax because it's called ad valorem tax.... They found a way to penalize people buying cars elsewhere and bringing them here (incentive to buy from those auto dealers putting the $ in the lawmaker's pockets), and by giving it a different name, they can claim it's not double taxation! It sure felt like double taxation though! God Bless America, as crooked as she is. 😑
I agree with the potluck idea! 😁 It seemed very similar to our City Council meetings. Our City went from less then 5,000 to 70,000 in about 12 yrs, so there were some crazy times at the meetings 😂
yeah bro, Prof Richard Wolff says that this form of democracy needs to happen in the work place. You've just seen it happen here. Imagine the same type of meeting discussing, what should be made, how it should be made, where it should be made and who should make it? And most importantly, what should happen to the surplus or ... profit. Companies are operating like this now, around the world and in the US, it does work. Of course it is a Marxian setting and opposite to capitalism or ... an alternate to what we all have now ... just a thought
I think that is a fair point. I think the ability to speak your peace as well as occasions to come together as a community are the things I wish we could do more broadly.
Senator Bernie Sanders travels across Vermont with Ben and Jerry to the Republicans part of the state and politicians in Vermont don't take corporate money because they represent the people of Vermont
would also be better if people took participation more seriously... then politicians might not have as much sway, and we might have less shenanigans in the media and press to wade through.
How cool is that? So, happy birthday Morgan! I particularly liked the Old Shaw Farm bag, I hope that you took that guy up on taking as many as you want! Maybe a reusable grocery shopping bag in the same style with a big G added in front of the Old would sell on your tspring site! Where I live the county went plastic bag-less, you now have to pay $.05 per bag if you don't bring your own bag. The stores typically will sell a tyvek style bag for about a buck, could be you start a homesteading channel trend! It's a worthy concept! Quack on!
Because the US is a Constitutional Republic, not a democracy. Why? Because the founding fathers wanted to prevent mob rule. Now if you look at the VT economy, poorest state in the Northeast, you may reconsider how great politics are in VT.....
Our national form of government is a republic. It’s nice, however that here in VT we are able to have conversations and a vote on local, town issues. I don’t want politicians making every little decision for me.
While the process is orderly it's still based on an antiquated form of problem solving called government. The tradition of meeting is fine, though. If this is about solving needs and getting services then it can be done more like a live gofundme. The moment you start forcing people to pay for things they don't want it becomes a political brawl, and then, eventually, when the politicians make decision in the back rooms, like one person posted about under this video, you've realized that they're going to exploit the process because consent is assumed rather than verified. Then you see just how free you actually are. It's a constitutional republic, but in name only. Those in power perpetuate war, control through propaganda, and currency inflation.
I think you should go enjoy the potluck :) ....... who knows, you might find some common ground? I live in NYS, which means I too do a whole lot of head-banging-on-the-wall. But, my county is poor and rural and we have a town meetings (seems like it is more often than yearly, so maybe a bit more nit-picky?) where we can gripe/rejoice/plan together. I am looking at this as a reminder that I have easy access for involvement, literally across the street.
PS: I visited your channel and was instantly reminded of the couple of years my husband and I spent in Kayenta. You have an interesting climate! I looked carefully at your lean-to style greenhouse as it is quite similar to the plan I have been hatching for my future home greenhouse. I am getting a min-max thermometer in the mail today so my research can continue before building season. I liked that you showed yours a couple of times.
Brenda Montanye thank you. I like to call the structures “Pole barn” style I’ve built 3 building like this. There are super easy and cheap to build. God bless and Thanks for watching

Thank you! It is a remarkable thing to see that much community spirit and connectedness.
Just another great reason to add VT to our possibly final homestead destination. Thanks for sharing!!
It's an outstanding place. Let me know if you want to know the pros and cons of being here.

Happy Birthday Morgan!
I love our town meeting in Monkton VT! I do wish more people would attend and be involved to our town committees and boards.
It's tough to participate for some, but it makes a massive difference!
I enjoyed your ducks and your town meeting. Happy Birthday! It was also my cousin's and my birthday. She was the best birthday present I ever got!

It's amazing how all the town commons look the same in New England right down to the white church. Love my small town. THE best!

Thank you for filming this - is was great! And happy birthday!

It’s very common in smaller towns compared to huge metropolitan cities. People in cities are too numerous, too busy, or too disinterested

They should read that Lincoln quote the moderator started the meeting with, every time Congress convenes for a new session.
Town meeting in Vermont seems to be the way to go in a smaller state! Imagine trying to do this in NY, Fla, Ca, Tx! It would be a zoo!

Congrats to Peter!! He's a great guy and a good friend of mine!! And Happy belated Birthday! The best people are born in March (mine is the 14th) 😉

Great idea about a potluck! I don’t know many towns small enough for this to work very well, but it looks great. And how do things get settled the rest of the year?
You're right that town size does make a difference. The select board manages most of the day to day business for the town during the rest of the year.

@ 9:17, a wild Alfred appears!
My city has over 50,000 people. This pure democracy won't be very efficient.
I think that is a fair point. I think the ability to speak your peace as well as occasions to come together as a community are the things I wish we could do more broadly.
how wonderful would that be! Unfortunately, the larger the group, the harder it is ... and the easier it is for nefarious actions to be hidden.
Don't ask why. Just be thankful.🤣
just think, Washington DC? Pot Luck? Do-able?
True!
America is not a town of a couple hundred people. If we ran on a pure democracy we would never get anything down.
