    You need to also hear the studio version of this with Clare Torry as the origional singer of this.

    How do you put the great unknown into words? With emotion. You do it with no words and moving through the cycles of grief and loss. Anger and denial first, then acceptance and finally peace.
    A true masterpiece.

    The first one who sang was Sam Brown, her mother Vicki Brown sang with Pink Floyd during the Dark Side Of The Moon tour.

    This song was performed live at the funeral of Richard Wright, Pink Floyd's keyboardist, in 2008. Durga Mc Broom, a backing singer on the Pink Floyd World Tour, was asked by Rick Wright to do this during his lifetime. As I am in personal contact with Durga Mc Broom, she confirmed this to me. Unconfirmed, however, is the fact that she was accompanied by Jon Lord, keyboardist of Deep Purple, on the piano during the performance.

    I saw the Pink Floyd concert twice. The lead singer here, Sam Brown, also had a massive hit with 'Stop'. Search 'Sam Brown Stop' 😀You will love it!

    I saw that concert in Rotterdam at the Feyenoord stadium sometime in the 90s.

      Me too. Saw them twice in de kuip. Saw them there in 1988 too. And in Nijmege. And 1990 (I think, at Werchter). Best live band ever.

    Pink Floyd has no bad songs but with this one you need to hear the studio version too.

    I would suggest the studio version so you know why the three girls are singing in such fashion. Here they are trying to emulate the incomparable Clare Tory. Who not only nailed this piece, but who made it up ON THE SPOT with improvisation when told the band didn't want any lyrics! The original is always the most inspiring and heart felt, but this is not bad too.

    • @rmyikzelf5604
      @rmyikzelf5604 Місяць тому

      Actually the band originally did want lyrics, but Roger Waters hadn't finished them. Clare was in the same studio and they asked her to just sing something. It took two takes and the need for lyrics went out of the window. The song is about dying by the way, first struggling against it, then sadness, and finally acceptance.

      WOW !!!!
      A totally new take on what happened after 50 years of different story.
      Producer Alan Parsons suggested an almost unknown jazz singer named Clare Torre......who had to be found first, and then offered the gig as a potential session singer.
      Nothing was organised, it was just an idea.....but some variations suggest a few chords had been written down......but NO melody.
      First take doesn't count, because she started singing words, " oh baby, baby baby etc.
      This was stopped immediately and she was told NO WORDS.
      She then did just the one take, thought it was terrible, REFUSED to do a second take and left .
      The backing vocals from the album are NOT Clare Torre, as many believe.
      They are mostly Vanetta Fields , but other backing vocalists were also used.

    I had a crush on Sam Brown when I heard her voice, she had a great hit song with Stop! And I guess she got her amazing musical talent from her successful parents, Vicki and Joe Brown.

    This is an amazingly emotional song. Its about the death process - our emotional responses in so many ways from anger to realization and finally comfort. I've thought about having it played at my own funeral - not sure the crowd would get it (LOL). IMO in their top 5 best.

    I believe that on Black woman sand the whole song in the studio. The original song was released in 1973.. The Pulse Tour where this was recorded in 1994. Digital re-mastered that the screwed with parts of the song with mixers, computer programs or "Prefect were used." I think U need to find an "original Released " to react to our start using a "Pitch Monitor Program". I'm sure U want to be honest about the songs. Me, I'm a Sid Barret, Roger Waters, and drummer Nick Mason. I did like Richard right on Keyboards. But after the last album with Roger Waters [The Final Cut] which was one of my favourite Floyd albums, to many great songs to list. But, South Hampton Dock and "The Gunners Dream" dream out to as the cream.

    Why does every youtuber watch live versions of this song when the original iconic recording with Clare Torry is the absolute best? You might as well not bother.

  • @simonlitten
    @simonlitten Місяць тому

    The live versions, while very good, are poor imitations of Clare Tory's spontaneous studio delivery on Dark Side Of The Moon.
    That track was the signature sign off for years for a local radio station's Sunday night album show - nominally 10pm.
    For me, this track has too much emotional resonance.
    Loved watching your reaction to the vocalists' delivery.

    • @chrissilverhand1
      @chrissilverhand1 Місяць тому

      There's nothing "poor" about this performance, it's simply different to that of Clare Tory. As for"too much emotional resonance", apart from that statement being utterly pretentious, is it possible to be too emotional about the end of a life?

    Sorry, should have got Eivor to do it. As good as this lady is, Eivor can go beyond this and has a better voice and definitely better pitch. Eivor doesn't sing this as far as I know but sometimes she will use similar vocal techniques and when she does it's insane, almost not human. Wake Me UP is one song I think.

  • @Kappowski
    @Kappowski Місяць тому

    this version really isnt good, the lady has no timing or soul. the album cut is best but if you want a live version check the delicate sound of thunder version with Rachel Fury and the McBrooms.

    • @biancastruijk9224
      @biancastruijk9224 Місяць тому

      Biggest bollocks I’ve ever heard.. it’s raw pure emotion .. timing.. soul .. all not important.. it’s about hearing the pain.. this does not needs to be perfect with a perfect timing… perfect timing is making it worse.. because raw emotion doesn’t pay attention to timing

    Pink Floys has created many masterpieces, but "The Great Gig In The Sky" is one of the special ones because it is so completely out of the ordinary (even though Pink Floyd wrote some very different songs). In my opinion, this concert recording in particular reflects what the song is supposed to be about, without words.
    And you have to admit that these Bachground singers can't just sing, they know their job very well.
