I’ve also never seen anyone explain HOW to tell about those 4 colors the acid will tell. I love that you use a dot of acid, then swipe it up, THEN look at the color. Yay!!! You have changed my world. God bless you!! I’m a fan for life.
I just recently got into the reselling arena and bought myself a testing kit similar to yours; I’m so glad I watched your video! It was so informative that I now know how to test my jewelry! Thank you for sharing! 🥰
I have just watched this video in Nairobi. It is such an detailed well shot video. I plan to start a gold diamond and silver jewelry business very soon and this bideo has taught me a lot. Thank you so much
Your presentation was absolutely 💯 through! I have a cheap jewelry cleaner tub but wanted another technique. Wow, I'm so glad I found you! Thank you so much 💓!!
Hi Devan! Can you make more of these acid testing videos please! The one big thing you do (that none of the others I’ve looked at do) is look at the color on the qtip-the others say to look at the color on the board which I have so much trouble deterring the color so thank you!! Also, what is the board made of? I’d like to buy a bigger one than the little square I got with my kit. 😍😍
Thank you so much for this video. It helped me a great deal. I didn't know to use anything other than the silver acid or 18 kt to check for silver. The Q tip is an awesome tip. I'm going to have to retest my jewelry again. It'll be worth it knowing I'll see a difference. Thanks again. Eileen
BEST VID ON TESTING SILVER EVER!! You are really thorough, smart, and awesome. Thank you!! Most ppl just use the gold acid, not the silver acid. However, some vintage silver and TURQUOISE pieces can be Alpaca metal and is at times more valuable than sterling, one!
I have not personally ran into this issue! But I understand that the brand Brighton is heavily plated, and can possibly cause confusion. However, that's why I choose to use sterling silver acid instead of 18k acid to test for .925 silver.
hello, I was wondering what type of silver testing acid you use. I've used JSP before and it worked great. But the last one I got did not work well at all. Showed some ok results but nothing on others using what I know is solid sterling. Can you let me know your thoughts, as I enjoyed and learned from your video. Thanks!
You should be cleaning off your board with rubbing alcohol to help neutralize your testing board or conditioning solution. If you are out of Sterling silver acid you can use 18k acid Sterling silver will be bright milky blue.
Oh yeah, if you could make a video testing gold and platinum, that would be great too. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong on some gold but I don't know how to test for platinum. You're awesome!
Hi what did you put or can you put on the testing stone to clean please and also how do we store the little bottles of silver testing acid safety? Can I throw the q tips with acid on away with the in the house garbage? Many thanks J
Hi Moonstone Mamas... Do you give any credence to a burn rate.. ie I place what I know to be 925 marks on my stone and then mark the silver in question.. I then draw a line across the both marks and see how fast they burn.. if they burn to gather I take it as 925, if one burns after I take it as not 925 or lesser... I was not hep to the color scheme .. how say you on the rate of burn.. Love your video, your supper.
Actually you tell people when you scratch the jewelry on the stone you DO actually damage the jewelry you dont break it but you do put additional scratches on it which DOES decrease the value because of wear due to testing... IF the jewelry start off with NO scratches and you scratch it due to testing you would decrease the value not by much but you state that it does NOT affect the jewelry which is actually NOT true IF you can buy a stone which can fit into the holes of the ring it would be better because you can make the test scratch inside of the ring which then would NOT show while wearing it.. And IF you can scratch the inside then you can still scratch hard and MOST jewelers use a small file and make a deeper scratch on the inside of the ring to test to see if its plated and once again you should advise your people that IF it is a very shiney ring without scratches on the band that they should scratch on the INSIDE of the band because YOU DO HURT THE JEWELRY AND ITS VALUE so you are lying to your viewers I SELL AND TEST JEWELRY AND SCRATCHING ON THE INSIDE OF THE BAND WILL NOT AFFECT THE RING IF YOU SCRATCH IT WHERE IT CAN BE SEEN YOU ARE AFFECTING THE JEWELRY AND ITS VALUE
You can also use the 18kt acid to test silver and it will show up as bright blue on the stone. No qtip needed. If it disappears then it’s not sterling.
Thank you I am starting an online jewelry business and a lot of these Chinese jewelry pieces seems too good to be true now I have a way to test the items
The problem with these test kits is that the silver testing solutions have a very short shelf life. Unless you are a pawnshop and can afford it, spending $30-$40 to replace the silver testing solution every year is too prohibitive. And sometimes as the silver testing solution gets older, the results can be inconclusive. so there is no exact expiry date. Fortunately there is a less expensive way. As it turns out, 18K gold testing solution, which has a much longer shelf life, will always reveal the presence in an alloy of silver by producing a silver precipitate (silver chloride from the HCl in the dilute aqua regia solution). When the solution is added during the test, the silver dissolves and the precipitate forms, that at first is blue and then turns white. 22k gold testing solutions also are a dilute aqua regia solution but will not produce the precipitate and will simply dissolve the silver without leaving a trace. As for determining purity, I have found that pressing down hard and producing a single streak on the stone, then adding the 18K solution, the silver chloride precipitate line will be thicker as the purity of the silver rises
If i find something that is marked .925 and is not acid tested positive for sterling, AND if i'm going to sell it, i would just disclose just that. "its marked 925 however, i acid tested it, and it is not sterling silver! :)"
Thank you so much for sharing !😎 it looked like you cleaned your board with one of the acids . Is this correct ? Do you ever use dish detergent or some type of soap on it , then rinse ? Thx so much . Trying to figure this stuff out 🧐😁🙃❤️
We use platinum acid to clean our boards. It’s important to remove all scratch residue. If you have any other questions please ask. We learn together by lifting each other up. Be well! Jamie
Thanks for this video. I've just started reselling jewelry some after over 20 years on ebay. I'm appropriately cautious about testing with these acids, both for safety and with a desire to make sure to get accurate results. This was the best video I've found. Thanks a bunch. :) I saw a couple folks using 18K acid to test for sterling silver, in which the drop turns blue. What are your thoughts on that?
Thank you so much for watching! I personally prefer the sterling silver acid. When using the silver acid I feel like there isn’t a lot of wiggle room for error, it’s either brick red or not. I’m not too familiar with using 18k, I’ve seen a lot of people use it, but i guess I’m a creature of habit! 🤪 thank you again for watching!!
@@MoonstoneMamas Thanks so much for the personal reply. Yea, I was concerned about the off label use on the 18K acid. I agree and appreciate your opinion. The reason I'm doing this testing isn't unlike what you are doing: to make very sure you're selling someone sterling silver. So I agree: let's not mess around. Thanks again!
Thank you that was extremely helpful. Can you give us some tips about what you do with the jewellery after testing ie 1) What do you do with damaged jewellery that has tested 925. 2) How do you decide on how much you are going to ask for each item that you list to sell etc That would be useful thank you xxx
Lesley Pearson great questions! The saddest is a beautiful damaged piece! If we cannot fix it by repair, we will re purpose findings. Like the clasps etc. we also will create other pieces out of them. Worse case, they go in the melt pile. Thanks again!

Very, Very Informative! You went slow & spoke clearly, I do appreciate that! Just subscribed so will be following!!! Thank You!
Fun facts:
Some stainless steel can be non-magnetic.
Real sterling silver can have a very weak magnetism.

After watching your video, I feel confident I can correctly test for silver. Thank you!
Thank you. I have the supplies but haven't tested anything so I feel like I understand the process better now..
Just found this tonight Devan. Really informative. I would love to see gold testing how you choose which solution etc ❤
Silver testing has always been a problem for me. This vidieo has changed that for me. A big thank u

Just wash your stone with steel wool and water. Don’t waste your acids.

Do you know what the acid is that is in your silver testing kit bottle?
where does one dispose of the tampons and cotton balls
I throw mine in the trash!

Where do you find your rings and stuff in bulk like that?
How do you clean the test board if you don’t have the 18k?
I suppose using the acid that your testing with and wiping the whole board down to erase your marks would work! Good luck!
@@MoonstoneMamas would the acid neutralizer work?
@@terenceryan6051 yes definitely

What do you use to clean the black stone after testing to get rid of the chemicals? Thank you!
I use the platinum acid. I drop a few drops on to the slate, rub it all over with a paper towel, let air dry! Wear gloves!

How do you test extra small chains ⛓️?
Also I have tried 22K 18K to clean my stone but the markers are still visible.
Great video, thanks! “No sissy rubbing” 🤣
Chains are hard to test and get it to scratch well.
Thank you so much.
What do you do with the fakes? After 3x testing, I trash them so to not perpetuate the lie.

Why don't you just turn the black plate over and use the other side?
icatz the plate that I have, has a textured non skid bottom. 👍🏼

Have you ever used an acid that was "expired"? If so, what happened?
It doesnt give a clear reading.
Great video but you can use the 18k acid on silver and if it turns like a sky blue, it's real silver. 👍🏽
Scratched 4 grams on my board. It didn't affect it.
