I think showing people how to flatten a bow in the metal by just whacking it is not helpful. You can be casual, organic. After you have learned the correct way to do things. The thrifing part is good re the steel brake.

The problem with these test kits is that the silver testing solutions have a very short shelf life. Unless you are a pawnshop and can afford it, spending $30-$40 to replace the silver testing solution every year is too prohibitive. And sometimes as the silver testing solution gets older, the results can be inconclusive. so there is no exact expiry date. Fortunately there is a less expensive way. As it turns out, 18K gold testing solution, which has a much longer shelf life, will always reveal the presence in an alloy of silver by producing a silver precipitate (silver chloride from the HCl in the dilute aqua regia solution). When the solution is added during the test, the silver dissolves and the precipitate forms, that at first is blue and then turns white. 22k gold testing solutions also are a dilute aqua regia solution but will not produce the precipitate and will simply dissolve the silver without leaving a trace. As for determining purity, I have found that pressing down hard and producing a single streak on the stone, then adding the 18K solution, the silver chloride precipitate line will be thicker as the purity of the silver rises

I would rather score the geode first and place it on a solid base before hitting it. Putting the geode in your hand and hitting it with your other hand/hammer can be inconsistent, especially if you are trying to follow a score line. Further, the energy applied to the geode goes through the specimen and dissipates through your hand that holds the geode. Your method just looks arbitrary and no telling how the specimen is going to break open. Nice video otherwise.

Actually you tell people when you scratch the jewelry on the stone you DO actually damage the jewelry you dont break it but you do put additional scratches on it which DOES decrease the value because of wear due to testing... IF the jewelry start off with NO scratches and you scratch it due to testing you would decrease the value not by much but you state that it does NOT affect the jewelry which is actually NOT true IF you can buy a stone which can fit into the holes of the ring it would be better because you can make the test scratch inside of the ring which then would NOT show while wearing it.. And IF you can scratch the inside then you can still scratch hard and MOST jewelers use a small file and make a deeper scratch on the inside of the ring to test to see if its plated and once again you should advise your people that IF it is a very shiney ring without scratches on the band that they should scratch on the INSIDE of the band because YOU DO HURT THE JEWELRY AND ITS VALUE so you are lying to your viewers I SELL AND TEST JEWELRY AND SCRATCHING ON THE INSIDE OF THE BAND WILL NOT AFFECT THE RING IF YOU SCRATCH IT WHERE IT CAN BE SEEN YOU ARE AFFECTING THE JEWELRY AND ITS VALUE

Fun facts: Some stainless steel can be non-magnetic. Real sterling silver can have a very weak magnetism.

You can also use the 18kt acid to test silver and it will show up as bright blue on the stone. No qtip needed. If it disappears then it’s not sterling.

Just wash your stone with steel wool and water. Don’t waste your acids.
