I also love using a ball bur. I actually prefer to use a carbide ball bur and skip the setting bur for smaller stones. They stay sharp for so long. Thank you for sharing this view. Always nice to see how others work.
Andrew, I have seen a couple of other people on youtube flush setting, but, as detailed and informative as your version was, I still can't help thinking there's sorcery involved. I'm going to have to have a go and find out. Brilliant video. 🙌🙌🙌
Thanks for sharing your knowledge, it’s so important to see different ways people set stones. Also, I have had customers complain if the bottom of the stone is poking through a pendant, it can rub against their chest and cause irritation. Not criticizing, just throwing that out there
Great tip about size of stone determining depth to set in relation to surface of metal (i.e. with larger stones don't aim to be flush with metal). I've had trouble getting larger stones secure, perhaps I've been trying to set them too deeply. Thank you!
Excellent as always, this is the first place I look when I need to freshen up on my jewellery making techniques. Its really easy to understand, to follow along and to use the right tools to make it easier. Thank you!

Adding to my favorites... too many little details to end up missing one. Thanks for this tutorial, Andrew!
Mr Berry , as always I absolutely love your videos. Flush setting is my favorite. I have a challenge for you. Could you please do a video on flush setting a fancy cut. I know this might be advance for most viewers, but I want to learn. Can't wait until April 16.
many thanks for this very clear video! I will try the flush setting soon, its a real challenge for me but my favorite kind of setting stones , thanks a lot for your help!
I’ve been meaning to try flush setting for years, bought all the tools, and then got scared. Your videos pushed me to try and I’m happy to say I successfully flush set three 3mm CZs yesterday! Today I tried a 1.25mm emerald. I did manage it, but it was fiddly. Do you have any tips and tricks for setting smaller sized stones? Thank you, your videos are really great!
I'm glad to see you saving the shavings. I wondered why I hadn't seen this before. With all the shavings, they add up at the end of the day. I work with metal clays. When I save the shavi gs/filings I get to make more clay to work with. You can melt yours or bring to refiner for money.
hey love the video! i've been trying the flush setting but I can’t get the stone to sit tight, so when I go with my burnisher it dances sideways. Any tips?
You make it look so very simple. I’ve tried a lot of times but disaster. So I’m going to try again and focus on stone size. I’ve bought those magnifiers. So cross your fingers. Fab detailed video as usual. Kathy.
Hey Andrew I hope you read this because I know you dont make cuban links or anything but I want to make them and eventually want to put diamonds in them. I would start off with using garnets and such but it would really help a bigger variety of jewelers if you did something like putting cubic zirconias in a silver chain link or something similar to get the point across. Id love that and I know a lot more people would, even if you did two links, to get the point across. I love watching your channel and I learn something new every time I watch a video from you. Thats why I’m asking you if you could make a video like I said earlier. It would help me out tremendously!!!!
thank you so much for this - you're a fantastic teacher! i just had my lesson in flush setting earlier today and absolutely killed my hand - 4 hours later and 2 fingers are still numb, but your hand positioning makes a lot of sense so i'll definitely be trying this :) you also make it look so effortless!
I now have pendant motor set up on a stand, and have started drilling on a piece of silverplate-I have to sharpen my burnishers before I try setting-steel has got to be more difficult??Will the flush set hold over time? I would guess if I do it well on the steel/silverplate, it would likely hold indefinitely, but how do you determine how well you have flush set in sterling on a blind hole?Is it okay to use jewelry grade epoxy-just a drop? if you want to ensure stone will not ever get lost? Or is that just not done for some other reason?
Would it be possible to show a before and after of the stone in place then after burnishing please? It is such small detailing that I can’t quite see the difference.
Just watched this again, I am in the process of setting 12 2mm Sapphires, I cheated I used my newly acquired watchmakers drill press to drill the holes and cut the seats it worked very well
Andrew thank you for your excellent video’s, I’ve been doing custom jewelry for some 50 years, and as a quote from Michelangelo , “Ancora Imparo” (“I am still learning”), I find this to be true everyday! In my work I find that I just about make everything from scratch, I started the old way, before a lot of stuff was being manufactured!! I find myself still working this way today! I was only going to ask you a question, and here I’ve written you a letter, I’m setting (flush setting) some rubies in an item that after setting them I want to solder it onto a larger item, do I have to worry about the setting rim melting away, since it’s so thin around the stone?? If you could give me a heads up on this, I would greatly appreciate your knowledge and input, Thank You in advance!! P.S.,it seems I almost always pick up some little tidbit from the video’s I’ve seen!! I’m Frank Kurz (USA) caught the first one from RIO Grande , my main tools & material supplier , Thank You for listening to me ramble on & on & on , Bless you & yours in these most unusual times!!😎🌴🌴⛱👀
Hello Andrew, First of all, Thank you so much for your helpful videos. I really love and enjoy watching your precise steps of making jewelry. I would like to have some advice which I am having some trouble. I am following your steps but for some reasons my stone is not staying in. The stone I am setting up in a 16 gauge metal is 2.20 CZ stone . I followed your drills sizes , I am using a size bud burr 023 and using a setting seat burr 020. Then I burnished around and when I tested as per your video it seems to stay but when I pocket from the back the CZ comes off. I will appreciate your help or any suggestions or advice. Thank You 😊
How would the depth needed change if the surface of the stone is rounded (flat backed cab) instead of a stone with a table? Thanks so much in advance!!
Fantastic video. 2 questions, Is this a general procedure in the sense that it is used for any stone and any metal? I ask because I am studying watchmaking and want to know if this technique can be used to set the jewel bearings into the base plate of the movement?, (synthetic sapphire into brass). Second; what is the name of the rotating vice used to hand engrave the rim/countersink around the stone and where can I get one?.
Hello, Andrew. Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge with us, greatly appreciated. Regarding the GRS block you use for securing the silver plate , I found it too expensive. Of course, I understand that's a special tool, but can you show us an alternative?
He did. Like he said you can use a ring clamp. You can also use a vice or you can just hold your piece if it’s big enough, on a drill able surface. The GRS system is lovely, but it’s not cheap, and it’s not necessary.
Hiya, love all your demos so easy to follow and most off all a really good teacher,i bought some sliver 1mm and d wire ,but to nervous to use it as ive only been doing silversmith for a year now,as the college is closed ive made 2 rings but not confident in case i mess it up 😊
Just try....if u fail ...keep trying! But don't use the sterling silver....it's too expensive to practice on. But your self a cheap copper sheet and practice over and over and you will get it. Believe it or not it's not hard. I have zero schooling or classes ...I just watched a couple utube videos and purchased the supplied and went all in....took only a few tries to master it! That was few years ago and the videos sucked ....it's all about just going all in and try, fail, and try again until you get it! Just don't practice with your expensive silver....get some cheap cz's to flush set in copper! Good luck!! -Toshia
If setting into a half round/round ring is it the same process or is there anything else to consider ? Just wondering as two sides of the metal would be a fraction higher than the others ?
Great video. Thanks. Could you set a 7mm stone if you’re happy to have the table sitting proud of the metal surface? And if so, would you then call it a “burnish set” vs flush set?
hi Andrew when making a wire or prong setting what gauge wire do you use in relation to the size of the stone please, I did this once and it looked bloody awfull all over the place natural to say it wound up on the scrap..
Andrew, can that be done with copper plate to practice on? I have loads of Gemstones, but not a lot of silver to play around with. I have learned alot and would love to try this. Thanks Andrew!
Hi, Andrew! Thanks for this very detailed demo on flush setting. May I ask where you source these very thick discs of silver? I've only found sources that sell up to 22g. Do you mill them and cut them? I'm in the US. Thanks.
That is the clearest and most complete tutorial on flush setting I have seen….thanks
As usual you give us all the details we need and show us the finer points, like hand positions. You are a fabulous teacher.
Thank you for your the demonstration: you are a very good theacher and explains clearly and shows it well
You’re such a great teacher!

I've watched many flush setting videos and this is the best so far, thank you Andrew!

Be lovely if you could show how to flush set a square, pear shape , and oval stones. Please 🙏
Yes please please plllleeaaaassseee do this!! NO BODY (THAT I KNOW OF) HAVE A VIDEO DOING THIS....anyone know of one??
No need it is the same procedure, only difference is you need to cut the seat by hand with a burr
@@pijnto ohh how funny....that actually makes complete sense. I'm going to have to try this....thank you!!
@@pijnto sorry, I disagree. I think you should use a graver
Depends on what the jeweller is comfortable with and what tools they have to hand.
Thanks Andrew, this is the video I've always wanted. All I need now is pavé and micro pavé.
Fantastic tutorial, thank you Andrew!🙏🌸
Great tip about size of stone determining depth to set in relation to surface of metal (i.e. with larger stones don't aim to be flush with metal). I've had trouble getting larger stones secure, perhaps I've been trying to set them too deeply. Thank you!

Thanks Sir, great explanation how to set this flush setting stone.

good job thanks for teaching
thank you for the brilliant video. now I know why to use a ball bur before using the straight side to seat a stone. great explanation
Great Video ❤❤❤
Thank you for doing this video! This is so hard for me, but I'm ready to try again.
Very helpful!
Thanks! Very clear descriptions.
Thanks Andrew. Just the detail I needed.
Amazing video!
Hi Super Andrew, thanks again for yet another awesome video.
May I suggest to show a) other stone settings b) other cuts. please!
that's amazing thank you!!

In this case the gem is 2.5mm, what is the size of the ball bur you use, which is the penultimate one?
Very inspiring, will be trying this soon. 😁 Would like to see a vid on pave setting please.
Hi, thank you ;)
Hi Andrew can you recommend some burrs for me
Hello Andrew,
First of all, Thank you so much for your helpful videos. I really love and enjoy watching your precise steps of making jewelry. I would like to have some advice which I am having some trouble. Thanks for sharing
Thank you for the informative video!! I have a question, is this burnishing technique possible with 304 stainless steel as it's a harder metal?
thank you
Thank you! So helpful!
Hello, can you do the same setting with a cabochon?
Thank you for the instructive video! I see you are working with silver, is this possible to do with 304 stainless steel?
Bel video, complimenti
Do you never use special glue for silver to set a diamond?
So helpful thank you, can I use a ball bit to drill the initial hole and then a setting but instead of a drill bit (if I don’t have drill bits yet)
Sorry a ball bur for initial drilling * and then setting bur*
As opposed to drill bit, ball bur, and the setting bur
Yes that would also work
Fantastic video. 2 questions, Is this a general procedure in the sense that it is used for any stone and any metal? Can you glue the stone at the bottom for safety?
How soft is the metal? Does drilling it harden the metal? Anneal first? Thank you for all this info. I love these videos.
@@torstenneuer1560 Ah that would my failure in trying to flush set in brass.
I am moving from 3d bullion art to TEMPORARILY making a 25th wedding anniversary ring for my wife. Thanks for the tips.
What bench vice are you using?
Thanks, nice to know how its don !!
Hello, Andrew. Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge with us, greatly appreciated. Regarding the GRS block you use for securing the silver plate , I found it too expensive. Of course, I understand that's a special tool, but can you show us an alternative?

You can use thermoset plastic in a ring vise
Can I also use diamond bears?
Okay,...you've inspired me to try this again.
No need to undercut with hart burr.? Does the setting burr alone suffice? Or is a ball burr all that is necessary? Or all aforementioned?
Can you flush set other shapes of stones? Oval or pear shaped?
Yes please....is there any videos of this being done in other shapes anywhere on utube?
Hiya, love all your demos so easy to follow and most off all a really good teacher,i bought some sliver 1mm and d wire ,but to nervous to use it as ive only been doing silversmith for a year now,as the college is closed ive made 2 rings but not confident in case i mess it up 😊

I want to know how to “bust down” grills for teeth & how do you invisible set diamonds on a uneven surface
Süper süper süper süper süper süper süper süper süper thank you
Thanks Andrew. May I ask what's the radius of the burnisher tip?
It’s an old burr. I used a grinding wheel to taper the tip. It goes down to a top that is about 0.5mm round and polished.
Many thanks.
Great video. Thanks. Could you set a 7mm stone if you’re happy to have the table sitting proud of the metal surface? And if so, would you then call it a “burnish set” vs flush set?
Yes, after 2 mm the table sits above the metal. Still classed as flush set
hi Andrew when making a wire or prong setting what gauge wire do you use in relation to the size of the stone please, I did this once and it looked bloody awfull all over the place natural to say it wound up on the scrap..
can you do this with cabs?
Awasome video. Can you elaborate did you stick the stone ? I mean how does it remain intact there. Please help
Did not stick it. It stays in place by the metal that is burnished over the edge
I'd love to have you show us how you mark your metal if multiple stones are being set in a row.
can you flush set round gemstones in titanium flats?
Andrew, can that be done with copper plate to practice on? I have loads of Gemstones, but not a lot of silver to play around with. I have learned alot and would love to try this. Thanks Andrew!
Do you need to clean out the Burs after using them?
How would some go about getting silver or gold diamonds or cz's versus junk from Hobby lobby
How close can you put flush mounts next to each other?
How is the vice called you use?
How can this be done with a flat back crystal?

Rio Grande! Thicknesses to 6 gauge.
Brilliant, love watching your video’s, hubby wants to know why I’m watching men 😂
don't feel the need to use a small press for those 90 degree drillings? ( i say this, but i can see you can well do without it... lol )
What is that rotating thing called?
Thx a lot!
