While they’re not nearly as desirable as the carbon clad MTBs we dream about, there’s a lot going for them. Let’s have a look at why cheap bikes are so great.

Riding one of the decathalon rockrider full sus bikes atm, it's the most expensive bike I have ever owned at just over £1100, I wouldn't say cheaper bike = less expensive to run, as I have had numerous issues with cheaper parts

I all about buy cheap and upgrade as you go or only what you want in a high end whip. I have 2019 Norco Fluid FS4, the lowest end. I do not mind a cheap drivetrain or low end wheel set, as long as they function. So I got a Z2 fork and fixing to upgrade the rear shock, that's all I need, a functioning all trail bike with solid solid suspension.

If a mid-price bike started at $500, the margins of what constituted a high end bike would begin at a much lower price point. I think they use the phrase “cheap” in relation to the full spectrum of bike prices. Bikes range from $100-$10000. While anything much over $6k is a very expensive bike, in that view, anything below $1500 can be considered “cheap”, using statistical averages. A good “mid price” bike would probably be $2-$4k. That’s just how expensive bikes have gotten.

You don't need it. Materialism is over-rated for sure. My best memories are riding my 90s MTBS, and they were crap compared to a very cheap bike today. A cheaper bike makes the same terrain more of a challenge. Mamy people spend a fortune on bikes - and then travel miles just to get to a place that can properly test them with bigger rocks it can smooth out. And if you are after speed and response - most people could lose some bodyweight. Put some effort into the diet and eating healthy instead of the 9-5 grind in a job that we do not like. We have a choice!

It's like watching one of those celebrity shows where some guy is showing off his 200k super car parked in the driveway of his 30 million dollar house. I understand they have sponsors like Canyon so they can't just show off a "cheap bike" but perhaps they could have worded the video better. It's been going on a long while. 1) calling what most people think is a lot of cash "cheap" and saying you should "treat yourself". 2) When they compare stuff directly they often choose to compare super-cheap with mega-expensive. It may not please their sponsors to see how often moderately priced gear compares with the expensive gear. It's all diminishing returns.

everything above 500 € should give you a decent enough bike that can be rode for years to come.
If you think "Mate, I only got 300 € to spend!" Save a little longer - you won't regret it. The compononents and overall build quality just gets so much better - and that matters in the long run. I had so many shitty bikes and they never lasted very long. My current bike was a bit over 500 € and is still with me after 10 years as a daily driver!

Could it be that your opinion is based on the fact that you most likely have access to any bike, you are probably a great bike mechanic, have access to different parts to test, so it is easy for you to say go cheap. One doesn't have to go super expensive, but at some point, those of us that do not have what I described for you above, have to find a balance between not too cheap and not too expensive. Great work as always, but on this one, I would always opt for a mid-priced bike versus a cheap bike that might require upgrades.

I like it how they bring out hardtails and cheaper bikes to catch the young MTB market, then they always say they have way better bikes. Any rider starts off with something cheap. Even the Bottom end bikes from the shop are considered cheap after you skills progress. The deal is that, once you upgrade or adapt to luxury, its kind of hard to come back. The more you ride the more you don't want to fix a bike. You will do it as a hobby but not really to increase your performance. If some high end hardtails cost as much as a full suspension, then a full suspension is a better buy. I loved my cheap bikes because I didn't care about them, however, I am more likely to replace than improve them. I practically gave away my cheap bikes because I needed room in the shed. Thanks for the video.

    Hello GMBN!
Instead of getting 1100+ euro bikes and testing them as "cheap" options, you guys can test bikes that are actually cheap, but with a very good value for money ratio.
Models from manufacturers such as Radon, Scott, Merida or Canyon's cheaper models. I'm confident that you can find more manufacturers than the aforementioned ones, that produce good bikes in the range of 700-900 euros.
Keep up the good work, and really hope to see something that caters to the lower income riders out there!

I've since learned to spend as little as possible...right now, I am riding an ancient Trek 3700...but it's fine for what I do nowadays (injury)...and it was only $120 CAD. I've already had it for over a year, so if it gets stolen, oh well, I feel I've already got more than my money's worth out of it. If it doesn't get stolen, well, I'll happily keep riding it until something breaks. For the cost of putting new tires on it, I could probably get another barely ridden "brand-name" bike.

It is by far the most expensive bike I have ever owned, and I love it. It is a world of difference compared to a $600 LBS special. You can get a TREK Marlin 7 for 650 pounds. It's not a "cheap" bike, cheap as defined by poor quality or sub standard, in fact I would call it the AK-47 of mountain bikes. The Marlin can be upgraded easily and it is a steady hardtail. My bike at "home" is a carbon fiber Intense Primer, and the Marlin 7 is a great ride for my uses while deployed in, let's say an austere hostile environment. I'm a gear geek so I changed the Deore drivetrain to a BOX2, but I would say the stock Deore setup is very good. In addition I've added a KS ExaForm Speed Up Hydro Dropper, which is a levered dropper post and it has performed (as you Brits might say) in a smashing way. I also stripped the bike down in my billet and covered it with car wrap (ugly rust pattern) using a Bic lighter and a razor. Brand new bike, with awesome parts, looks like shit. PERFECT!

It's gone to a home for the more sedate rider now. So, while less expensive is good, it might hold you back or spend time being patched back together more often. Mavic Crossride FTS-X rear wheel
I hope next month to be able to change the front wheel and buy a new bottom bracket, the current one is loose and wobbles a bit.
It is my everyday bike, use it to go to work, shopping and to ride through the forest, in all weather conditions.

@@gmbn even if you have a cycle to work voucher from your employer you still can't spend £1700 there normally £1000 tops please be in the real world for once, my last bike cost £2500 but I worked in the trade and it was a dream bike perchase.

I've been riding on a regular basis off road mostly since the 90s..I've never paid more than $1000 for a bike. I've never had an ounce of trouble of any of them. I'm not a hard core rider, I do it mostly for exercise and keep me in shape for enduro motorcycle riding.

Totally agree. Hardtails are a great option for less money. And most people don't need a full suspension bike, except for their ego and to show off. The same goes with carbon fibre frames.
