Sir Stirling Moss (rip) for me. The man could drive & win in damn near anything, F1, Sportscars, Rally,Touring Cars, etc. AFAIK, he's also the only driver to ever talk his way OUT of winning the championship, when he stood up for Mike Hawthorn at the 1958 Portugese GP. His doing so led to Hawthorn's 2nd place (& 6 points) staying, only for Stirling to lose the championship by 1 point. I had the chance to ask him about this years later, and he said he had no regrets, as it was the right thing to do at the time...

Ronnie Peterson was the best driver to never win a championship. He finished runner up twice. Once in a March using the same engine all season! The other, as a number 2. In hindsight, he would have won the title if he didn't die that year. He was without any doubt, the out and out quickest driver, ever to sit in an F1 car. On his day, he was quicker than anyone. That includes the likes of Senna. Just ask anyone who was there. Even the other drivers were left stunned by his car control. Niki Lauda couldn't get within half a second per lap of him when they were teammates. Fittipaldi too, couldn't match him. Villeneuve was just a pale imitation of him. After causing the death of several spectators, showing off in front of Peterson, the most liked and respected driver amongst his peers, probably of all time never spoke to Villeneuve again.

Do you remember that race at Monza where he puncture a tire, and instead of going back to the pits slowly he drove as fast as he could?
Well... Driving that fast was the reason that flat tire destroyed the suspensión of that car.

@@AugCorreia I am a huge fan of Ayrton, AND YOU ARE RIGHT! Stefan smoked everybody in this race. Including Ayrton!
      I am from Germany.
      My take on Stefan Bellof:
He would have taken at least one title, given the right car.
      My take on Ayrton Senna:
He probably would have prevented Michael from getting the Ferrari seat.
Why? Because he probably would have won 1994 and 1995, if not retiring maybe 96 and 97 as well. The Williams was very strong after Ayrtons death, even to the end of 1994. Hill was nowhere near Sennas level and I highly doubt Jaques would have been, too...
Both dont die and have a lengthy career:
I cant even imagine without shedding a little tear...
I bet some would never have won a single title:
      - Damon Hill
      - Jaques Villeneuve
      - Michael Schumacher (he maybe would have beaten them once or twice)
      - Mika Hakkinen
And maybe the GOAT discussion would be between Stefan Bellof and Ayrton Senna...
      Who knows...
Jacky Ickx and the Williams FW16 robbed us of a lot of action and numberous rivaleries, we never got. And that is very sad!

Ronnie Peterson. In 1973 he was head and shoulders faster than Emerson. Even with inferior equipment during 1974-1976 he won races. If he would have been more lucky during 1973 he would have walked it. Even in 1978 he was trailing Mario by 12 points when he died. They actually made an agreement between them that they would race each other from US GP at Watkins Glen and on. Such a sad story that ended at that sloppy Niguardia hospital in Milano.

@@tomcharlton586 in 2010 Webber crashed out in a very wet South Korea race while warming his tyres behind the safety car on lap 18. He touched the curb while swerving and that was the end of that. He was 2nd at the time behind Vettel and as it turns out Vettel blew on engine on lap 45 in the race. Had Webber just kept the car on the track behind the safety car he would surely won that race and those 25 points would have had him winning the world championship by 11 points with Vettel 2nd (as per the results at the season finale in Abu Dhabi). When I was watching Korea I said to a mate that Webber just lost the world championship right there. Dan Gurney or Marc Surer. Gurney didn't compete for long enough and Marc Surer never was put in a good enough car but they certainly could have won a few titles. Surer by the way is a brilliant commentator, never one to stray too far from modesty and level-mindedness

Stirling moss. The man was runner up 4 times and the main thing that held him back was his bouncing back and forth between teams and misplaced loyalty in driving for british teams when he could have been driving in better cars that were not British

The greatest F1 driver NEVER to win a WC ? If there was a poll of 100 people asked the question i would be surprised if 90% didn't choose Sir Stirling Moss. He would've had at least one WC if he wasn't a complete gentleman. R.I.P Sir Stirling 🙏

DC deserved WC more than, let us say, Kimi (who inherited one from the Alonso-Hammy fight by a single point).
But McLaren screwed it up for him.
I'll never forget him punching the wheel after the car switched off on the grid (yet again...🙄🙄) at Monaco.....his great chance of a 3rd consecutive win after a frankly uncharacteristically brilliant qualifying performance.
    Also, naturally, Stirling Moss.
On the opposite scale was Eddie "Swerving" Irvine, who nearly accidentally inherited a blooming WC 😆.

It would be nice to see some memorabilia in the background, I imagine between the two of you , youhave a couple of trophies. Keep up the good work 👍

I see EJ when I worked at Raynards and made DC Vauxhall lotus for Stewart racing and I was a marshal at Silverstone as well I used to love watching the cars. I'd worked on running around the track with great drivers in them and your stories bring it all back.and thank you for that
I think a great drive like Rubens Barrichello

Can't wait for it to start.
    David Eddie please
This is a place to comment even though what I'm commenting about uses different fuel. But I'm sure you will get the rant by the end of the rant 😂
Did you know top fuel dragsters use 280,120.34 litres approximately every 4 runs or 1 mile as I understand it. Just 1 car. So my point being why the jellyfish did you ramp down the engines so much you lost the beautiful sound of F1. One of the absolute spectacles of F1 was the unique sound the sport carried. The V8 just clung on to that sound. I always have to UA-cam old footage to satisfy my ears. I am a sound junky I have been all my life. I beg beg beg beg beg beg beg please go back to V8's at least. Are 20/22 cars really going to make that much of an impact on the environment. No I really don't think so. Most of the environmental stuff is a farce anyway. Please don't misunderstand me. I all for keeping the planet green. But the trees the build up of clouds are all the natural filters of Mother Nature. She'll protect us and we are doing an awful lot already to help. Yes i understand F1 must show they're doing their bit. But it's all in vain if you ask me.
China are chucking more into the sky. Who else. I don't know. Dragsters as mentioned. There's other V8 championships around the world. Boat racing. Listen to the beautiful sounds they chuck out. Yet our beloved F1 sounds like a wet fart. I'm sure I'm not on my own with this.
22 cars on 24 weekend really going to kill the environment. No I don't think so.
    Pleeeeeaaaassssseeeeee V8 at least.

    Notes for presenters:
-Never use the word "tank slapper" with reference to cars. It's just wrong.
-And, you might need another "two pay" if you plan to wear headphones regularly.
-Oh and, the posters behind DC's head are a little sad. Is it to remind DC that he used to be famous, or to help Eddie remember who he's speaking to?
