Many of the comments here are typical of 'UA-camrs', ignorant and juvanile. how many times did he say it was a quick example of the artists technique and it would have taken weeks or months to complete a painting, please pay attention and listen or just stick to your Playstation.

I like Tom, he's commentating and demonstrating things very quickly which isn't easy to do. I'm not sure how many Renoirs he saw up close in person, but I think there's a number of things he's getting wrong. I doubt Renoir ever started with a conventional drawing in dry medium, not that it's a problem. Renoir added medium either to his paint or directly to his canvas (possibly a 50/50 turpentine/linseed oil mix), which is why you get the slicker look in his work, whereas the other impressionists favoured oil paint that had been leeched of excess oil content. When you see many of his paintings up close, they're not dab, dab, dab with lot of thick impasto paint. He started thin, and built up in the lighter areas, but they don't look excessively dabbed (like Pissarro in his neo-impressionist influenced period), and not that impasto. I think Tom has also greatly exaggerated the warm and cool relationship, maybe to make a point, but it lacks subtlety, and a bit too much suggestion of drawing. I don't say any of this to sound critical, I admire Tom, he's full of interesting information, it's just if you came to videos like this and took it too literally, you could get frustrated and come away with the idea that Renoir did in fact create paintings this way. The best thing to do is either find a museum with these paintings in, or find a very high quality one on the internet, and zoom in to reveal the textures, transparencies, impasto elements, brush stokes etc.
A number of Tom's choices are related to his health condition at the time, as well as the constraints of a half-hour live TV program. Though I'm sure he wasn't equally proficient at faking every artist.
i find it hard to believe that people criticize this video and critique his painting as if they have some sort of authority. someone said that its far short of renoir lol. i bet if renoir himself was on a video they would say that hes a good look-a-like but not as good as the "real" renoir lol. some people do that with modern celebs. the point is they dont know as much as they think they do. like little kids.
Well I have to say; he gave Renoir a blessed effort. There were many points when Keaton should have backed off and called it 'finished' ... which is what Renoir did oft (when not commissioned). I saw some magical portraiture become repeatedly destroyed by 'overworking', 'over-analyzing', etc. But I love Keaton as a teacher. (I think he realized his limits with Renoir). Renoir (probably my fav artist) made a lot of mistakes and bad paintings as well. He oft made the neck too short (like his wife's) and undefined. His crude nude figures are not my cup. But Renoir is my go-to reference for portraiture. Nothing has captivated me more than Renoir for children and ladies. Keaton is so broad in his appreciation of great artists!
Lol good, glad I wasn't alone on this... I am rather new to art, but could tell it definitley was a far shot from a Renoir, who was a master of much beauty and warmth... As you said, he gave it a good try (much better than I, I'm certain), but still no where near a Renoir!
l think in the very short time he has in front of the camera it's very good. Come time this painting would be worked on over a long period improving slowly but surely
Thats just the FIRST phase. You need to let it dry then come back & finish. He says this at the end of the video. This guy created fake Renoir s that hung in the Louvre & the British museum. Some are still thought to be Renoir. Im sure he’d help you finish this Renoir but unfortunately KEATING passed away in 1984. You’re watching a master & world famous forger of Renoir.
He is just quickly demonstrating the technique. When looking at his own work and forgeries you can see that this man was very talented and extremely good at what he did.
He speaks with such fluency and authority about his subjects, it amazes me that he is also simultaneously painting! I however can’t walk talk and chew gum all at once!
Under drawing is done in exact style of Renoir - not super boring and accurate manner which an ordinary painter would do. Slight distortions and approximations are desirable, because they represent the sparks of personality of the model, not exactly their physical exactness.

Tidied up his grave a couple of weeks ago out of respect. It's in the churchyard in Dedham Essex
My brother is buried close by in the same graveyard at Dedham. A beautiful peaceful place.

Renoir did indeed start with a dry medium, confirmed through spectroscopic examination. Im not sure where you’re getting your information.
