Ahmad Jamal "Blue Moon" @Jazz_in_Marciac 2014

Ahmad Jamal fait partie des musiciens dont les nombreux passages à Marciac ont toujours suscité l’enthousiasme. Non sans raison. C’est un magicien du piano, un de ceux dont le style, fait de ruptures rythmiques, de légèreté et d’audaces harmoniques, est si original qu’il n’a guère suscité de disciples. Il fut adoubé par Miles Davis qui le tenait pour son pianiste préféré et connaît, surtout depuis les années 80, un grand succès populaire. Ses développements gorgés d’invention semblent, de prime abord, relever de la fantaisie du moment. Ils s’inscrivent, en réalité, dans une conception plus vaste, quasi architecturale du morceau. D’où l’extrême attention que lui portent ses partenaires, dont le bassiste Reginald Veal et Herlin Riley, l’un des meilleurs batteurs actuels, tous styles confondus. Ils sont, avec le percussionniste Manolo Badrena, les artisans d’une dynamique dont le pianiste reste le maître d’œuvre, parfois - souvent - impérieux et déconcertant. C’est cette formation que Marciac accueille ce soir.
