- I filmed this video during August and am now editing it lol. I forgot to mention in the video, but both the Fun Lacquer and Holo Taco polishes were BRAND new (yes, I bought the Fun Lacquer ones just for the sake of comparison).

hello all!! A lot of people have corrected me on the clear brush decision
Cristine tweeted on Sept 29 that she picked clear brushes so you could see the Holo underneath twitter.com/nailogical/status/1178436159787147272?s=09
I filmed this video around August, but I didn't start editing it around September. I finished editing around the end of the month, but I didn't upload the video till Oct 5 because i didnt make the thumbnail yet. I didn't see her tweet because I don't really use Twitter
The reason why I thought it was a bit strange that Cristine picked clear brushes is because Cristine used to make a lot of nail polish porn, and one of her most used shots was the brush coming out of the bottle. As you all know, black accentuates Holo the best, so nail polish porn wise, black bristles do look better. But for functionality, I do agree that clear is better because you can see what is going on underneath, and you can see if anything smudged.
I forgot to mention in the video, but both the Fun Lacquer and Holo Taco polishes were BRAND new (yes, I bought the Fun Lacquer ones just for the sake of comparison). It's been 2 months since filming this video (procrastination lol), and both brands' topcoats have thickened a bit.
She said she chose clear brushes so you could see it going on the nail, not because it’s cheaper
I saw that Cristine explained why she picked clear brushes! I filmed this video 3 months ago haha.
sosimplyshelley no worries :) wasn’t sure if you heard that part since then or not
Actually clear brushes are more expensive than the black ones
I like that the holo tacos allow you to see more of what’s underneath because they are supposed to be topcoats. Cristine often puts these over nail art and I feel like if you used the fun laquer holos, they would not allow you to see the nail art as clearly. But again this is all preference and how you want to use them
yes they are both great brands, but Holo taco is better :)
Yes and you can layer them
I really appreciate that the Holo Taco toppers are more dispersed. If you want more dense coverage you can add another layer. But otherwise it's nice to be able to see your polish/nail art underneath the taco.
Me too ❤️
2:13 "I made sure I labeled everything so I wouldn't pull a Brad Mondo"
😂😂
Haha
Did he confuse things? Could you fill me in, please?
@@IxiaRayne He allegedly switched the labels so the results were what he wanted them to be.
@@Mmk12a oh what? Is this in a video?
She chose clear brushes so that you can enjoy the sight of the holo not bcuz they were cheaper or anything
I saw Cristine explained why she picked clear brushes after I filmed the video haha. I filmed this like 3 months ago.
Don’t say you’re irrelevant! You have just as much right to have an opinion as anyone else!
aw thanks 🥺
Lol, "camera was not in focus bc it was blinded by the holo"
Lol
With Royal-tea blue, Cristine didn't really make it a one coater. It also has a slightly different formula to one-coat black because it is thicker.
Many people, including me, had problems with Royal-tea blue :/ it's a pretty color, maybe I just got a bad one.
@@salty_shelley I'm not lucky enough to get anything from Holo Taco. My life sucks.
@@dyinginside273 hopefully some stuff will restock soon :) I wanted Play Rosé but it sold out 😭
She did all that to her preferences.. if u work super hard on say, a vinyl gradient manicure, u wanna be able to see it under all them sparkles. Just saying. And she picked the clear brush so u see the polish underneath.
I agree, that's why I prefer Holo taco :)
Same.
I really like this review and comparison, that's what I wanted to see, thanks
Thank you for watching :) ❤️
Hey UA-cam suggested this video and you did a great job with it!
Thank you :)
She's got new clear top coats and a peel off base coat!
I saw those! I mainly wear polygel/ gel polish though, so I'm not sure if I'll be buying them :(
sosimplyshelley the super glossy taco is AWESOME. I keep wanting to do more coats because it’s so fun to use and dries so fast. I haven’t tried the peel off base coat because Unt works perfectly so why even go there, you know?
Yessss science queen!! Cristine would be proud!
Thank you!! I hope so :3
Giving you a like because I feel you are receiving some unjust hostility, but some quick feedback on the video!
- The jump-cuts in audio are somewhat jarring. Often times, it's good to put your thoughts down on paper (not necessarily a script) so that you can let everything flow.
- Some differences in volume. Try listening to the video in its entirety, and adjusting specific clips if they are louder/quieter than the rest.
Overall, though, I think that you put your opinions into words well and that this video is a good representation of that. :)
aw thank you for the feedback 👍 I appreciate it! I like your idea of writing down some notes beforehand. I think that'll help me because I'm not the best at speaking off the cuff (I re- recorded many parts because I messed up a lot)
Wow, your comment was so constructive and positive at the same time. I wish I saw more ppl comment this way. Thanks for being so respectful! 🤗💕
please holosexuals, be nice 😀 this video was very informative, thank you for your work!!
Thank you haha...❤️
My personal favorite black is Sally Hansen Hard as Nails 880 Black Heart. It's a one foster for me & it's only $2 or $3. I love Holo Taco & I don't regret purchasing the box, however, $11 + shipping is just too much for me to spend on a regular basis.
Ohh the shade to Brad Mondo was awesome 🤣🤣 He knew exactly what he was doing
lolol it's all in good fun
@@salty_shelley - Of course!! Gave me a good laugh 😂
I came for the holo, but... GIRL YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL 😱
Thank you so much!! ❤️❤️
I like how you are so honest and fair with your opinions. (Although you made some mistakes eg. Holo taco uses clear brushes not because it is cheaper) I respect that !!
Thank you :)) reading your comment made me happy!! (I just got my wisdom teeth removed, and I'm in a lot of pain right now)
I actually filmed this video 3-4 months ago, but I didn't start editing it till 2 months ago. I saw that Cristine said she chose clear brushes so you could see it go on after I uploaded the video :(
Cristine used to make a lot of nail polish porn in the past, and one shot she liked to do a lot was showing the brush coming out of the bottle. black bristles let's you see the Holo better, so that's why I was a little confused as to why she picked clear, but it makes more sense now! I actually like the clear more because you can also see if you accidentally smudged your base color underneath.
It’s fine:):)! Take care!!
Thank you for making this comparison. I have both Fun lacquer and holo tacos polishes. I agree with you about Fun lacquer really packing that holo lol so im glad holo taco has afford a more scattered look in ita top coats. Love the new rainbow collection!
Thanks for watching!! i love the rainbow collection as well
Holo Taco will age better which is great news for me.
I agree! Because the formula is thinner and has a little less Holo, Holo Taco won't get as thick and gloopy (which is common for glitter toppers). I bought Fun Lacquer Diamond in 2016 after Cristine made her "what's the best Holo topcoat video?" & It thickened up really fast :/
(Sorry for the long reply) to add - I like to maintain my nail polish collection once a month by going through each bottle and adding some thinner if it has gotten thick. I filmed this video in August, and the consistency of Holo Taco is fine, but I put some thinner in my Fun Lacquer polishes
@@salty_shelley I didn't even think of that, it's brilliant!
I love your honest personal review.
thank you so much for watching!! ❤️❤️
Thank you so much! I had been wondering the exact same thing :)
You're welcome! Thank you for watching
thank you, this video was really helpful and now I’m a lot more sure that I wanna get the Holo Taco flakey holo top coat
Thank you for watching!!! I hope the flakey topcoat restocks soon 😥
gurl your makeup is absolutely stunning, you are so beautiful!
Aw thank you!! 🥺❤️
This was a great and really fair comparison video! Definitely gave me a lot to think about before buying.
Thank you for watching ❤️❤️
Hey you! Great video, you gept it real, made it clear and even though you are a fan you didn't make it just an ad but a plausible review. And the comparisons were really well done too! I see a big future for you.
Thank you so much!! Your kind words mean a lot :)
Just got this vid as a recommendation. Omg. You're so descriptive in your explanations. Thanks for all the details you give! Very nice vid.
Aw thank you for your wonderful words :)
Thank you for creating & sharing this very helpful comparison 😊👍
Thank you for watching!! ❤️❤️
Great video! This clearly demonstrates that sometimes less is more. 😊
thank you for watching!! :)
Aamm no it demonstrated that they don't know what is a top coat, you should be able to see the nail art underneath or the color of the nail polish.
Really helpful comparisons! I'm so glad I have the Holo Tacos, I really prefer to see the base polish more. I had a similar issue with Royal-Tea Blue, but only on the first application. The second time I used it it was fine, I felt like I was going crazy.
Great comparisons thank you!
Thank you for watching :)
I agree that the product comparison videos are the most exciting! Great job!
Thank you 🥺
I love how honest and thought - through this is!
Keep up the good work ❤️
Thank you so much :)
This was a super helpful comparison! I love HoloTaco but also am working on building up my FUN lacquers and wondered about the differences in the scattered, since Cristine's is my favorite.
Thank you for your kind words :) !! I'm glad the video was helpful
Love this review, very elaborated!
Thank you so much for watching ❤️
Great video! So happy to have this visual comparison :D
Thank you for watching :)
I think its better to use a blank or black background for better contrast. The silver glitter background with the nails just makes it blend into the background. I feel like when doing a comparison/review, it should be more easier to see.
She did clear to differentiate between top coats and normal polishes, she said that in one of her videos
Woah woah woah... WAIT. Why are you SO pretty? I was so into the nail art and then I see this goddess for the conclusion. 🤓🤩
Aw thank you so much!! 😭😭❤️❤️
Hahahaha
Love the video, keep it up!
Thank you so much! :)
@@salty_shelley No problem! I hope you have a wonderful day!
I have both China Glaze Fairy Dust and Scattered Holo Taco...and they’re not suuuper different tbh. I’ve only tried them over black though. If someone can’t afford Holo Taco or FUN Lacquer, I think that China Glaze would be an excellent substitute. I’m sure it’s not the only cheap brand that would do the trick and cost a quarter of the price.
I used to use China Glaze Fairy Dust all the time! Mines is super old and thick now though :( I agree, it is definitely a great substitute since China Glaze is much more accessible and cheaper! However, Holo taco dries a bit faster, but it doesn't make a huge difference once you put a clear glossy topcoat on top.
China Glaze is full of nasties though sadly (still uses formaldehyde which pretty much everywhere else has stopped using now). My bottle of it yellowed too, before it got to an unusable state, so it only really worked on stuff I didn't mind a yellow/aged tint being added to. For cheap scattered holo top coat, I recommend Born Pretty's La Vierge De Fer or Lady Vengeance which has a different shaped glitter to most I've seen. Then they also do Portrait of a Lady which is a flakie top coat. You can get all three together (at a discount on one bottle alone) for $9.18, so not a bad price especially if you aren't sure which kind you'll like yet. Dries really quickly too.
Alexa Faie I just compared holo taco, China Glaze, and Northern Lights on my other hand! On closer inspection, it looks like China Glaze has some plain silver glitter, and what I really want is PURE HOLO. NL doesn’t have as much holo as Holo Taco, but I actually like that because sometimes I want just a tiny bit of holo so my nail art shows. It’s also $9 on Amazon, so....
I haven’t found linear holo top coats to compare with, though. I wouldn’t want the FUN Lacquer one because I do want the nail art to show.
Love your unbiased review! Just a feedback though! I think you could adjust the brightness a little dimmer because it was really hard (for me at least) to watch the video, especially when I'm trying to focus on the holo. My eyes were tired hehe. Also, you might want to use a compressor to balance the audio so that your voice won't suddenly be loud and soft at different times~
May I know what do you use to record your voice-over? The in-built mic in the camera or with a microphone connected to a recording software??
Thank you so much! I appreciate your feedback and will incorporate in the future! I used a lapel mic for an iPhone to record the audio and used iMovie
I love my Holo Taco polishes!! I like the idea of building if you want.
Thankyou for the video!
Thanks for watching!!!❤️❤️
My favorite holographic brand polish is color club
I love Color Club! I have a lot of nail stuff from them :)
Thanks for sharing this vid!
Thank u for watching ❤️
My bottle of Royal-Tea Blue was thick and streaky as well. I love Christine but IMO this blue as-is, simply isn’t useable unless I convert it into a gel or add nail polish thinner to it. That said I love her Frost light and Midnight Spark blue glitter polishes, they are the bomb.com - both are still on the thick side and thin coats are hard to achieve unless you add nail polish thinner to your bottle before each use, which is my current process.
glad to know I'm not the only one! Some people are really upset at me because I said royal tea blue was thick even though I was just being honest about my experience with it
They've actually changed the formula for royal-tea blue and it goes on much better now. You also need to add two coats for it.
Thanks for letting me know 😊
the reason holo taco is not so jam packet is because its a nail topper it meant to show polish or art underneith
👍👍
Great video! I am not sure why it has so many dislikes; I think even Cristine would appreciate this video and someone else's viewpoints/critiques.
thank you so much for watching :) I did make a couple of mistakes, my filming/lighting/audio could've been better... But I'm always learning :3
Excellent, informative, subbed
Thank you so much :)
Good work and great video 🤩🤩🤩
Thank you so much 💕
The holo taco has less holo so you can control how much holo you want on your nail
this was a really helpful video! i know this video is kind of old now, but just in case it still matters: my only recommendation would be to use a black or other plain background instead of the sparkly one. the sparkly background is really beautiful, but i think it would've been easier to see the polishes over a plain black background. thanks for making this video though!
Thank you for the feedback! And I agree haha
Hey! This video is amazing! I would recommend making your background white, I think the glitter background doesn't really show the holo very well and makes you focus more on it.
I agree! I see other bloggers use glitter backgrounds so I wanted to try one, but they have fancy cameras that can blur the glitter, and I don't haha
sosimplyshelley That’s fine! Thanks for replying. 🙏 I really liked this video, and I hope you grow in your followers fast! For now, you’ve earned one subscriber, but I hope there will be many more to come!
Thank you 😊❤️
My royal-tea is also streaky, I’m convinced I received a bad batch
Is it still streaky after more than one coat?
Did you mix it before using it?
I got the blue holo and it’s so thick I can’t even use it. I am not impressed at all. 72.00 for 5 bottles was a lot for me and I was so excited and none of them were at all what I expected. I truly like my ILNP holo much better.
I believe they are currently in the process of updating the formula of their cremes
@@Tracylyn42 have you used nail polish thinner? I find that my holo tacos dry out fast in-bottle so I add a few drops of thinner every so often
I prefer Holo Taco because it isn't designed to be silver holo nail polish, it's a top coat to spice up your nail design and Fun Lacquer's polish would ruin it.
Okay WHAT is that metallic multichrome?!
It is fun lacquer - gorgeous
Your channel is so cute ❤️ just subscribed to it 👌👌👌
Thank you so much!!
Damn. I LOVR Cristine but I personally think the FUN lacquer looks better...
I like them both a lot :) it just depends on how much Holo you want!!
Royal Tea Blue is supposed to be applied using two thin coats.
The formula is too thick to be applied thinly.. and it's also still streaky with two coats. Maybe i got a bad batch? I got a new one during the black Friday sale, so I hope that one is better :)
sosimplyshelley I want to get some but I don’t currently have it so I don’t know. I’m just repeating what Cristine has said. One coat black is supposed to be a one coat (duh lol) but royal tea blue is, according to her, a two coat polish. No hate, just saying what she’s said :)
@@salty_shelley mine was good at first but now it's thick and dries really fast. It has always dried really fast. I think that's the issue especially with super long nails, gotta work really fast.
You’re so cute! Love your vids 🤗💖☺️
Thank you 😊😘
Looks like there's silver glitter in FUN Lacquer, it's a cheaper way to stretch the holo
Fun Lacquer looks so good
I agree 💞
Great video! ✨✨✨🌈
Thank you👍👍
This was actually quite helpful to see the difference between these two since I've yet to try either and they'd cost about the same to ship internationally to try. Based on these I think I actually prefer my holo topcoats I have from Born Pretty (for the flakie, though I have a set of 3 with different textures for the price of one bottle of either of these) and then also the one Barry M does with different holo glitter sizes in it (probably my fave, its stunning even in a low light room). I also do still like my holo top coats from Wikkid Polish as they do a Gold Dust and Bronze Dust which are both super fine scattered holo and ideal for warmer toned polishes which silver holo doesn't look all that great on top of. They don't show up in low light conditions nearly as well as the Barry M or Born Pretty ones though which I find interesting as both of those are the cheaper options!
Thank you for watching!! I didn't know born pretty store made Holo topcoats, so I might check them out the next time I order from them :)
@@salty_shelley They are hidden away in the top coats section of the Born Pretty section of nail polishes (don't show if you just look in the nail polish section!) even though they are holo and the listing calls them "sequins" top coat. And I just found that their "Nicole Diary" brand of polishes also has a set of 6 different holo top coats, though two are out of stock. They have different glitter sizes to what I've already got so now I'm tempted to get some.... But not sure there is space in my nail polish storage box....
I have Royalty blue for mine its not streaky
I got a second one & it's much better :) I love Pokemon btw 😎
If Cristine puts so much less holo glitter in her polishes, why are they the equally high priced
my guess is due to factors like location and supply chain. Fun Lacquer is made in Singapore whereas Holo Taco is made in the U.S. Different laws, taxes, and prices etc. based on country can impact the final cost of goods for the product.
I tried other Holo Taco nail polishes, like her glitter ones, and they are JAM PACKED with glitter! I believe Cristine purposely put less holo in the toppers, so it wouldn't cover up what was underneath
@@salty_shelley the glitter does not solely decide the cost of the product, cristine has mentioned she has spent way more money than other bands in terms of the glass bottling and cap and the bases of the holo toppers all costed much more than usual brands. she has also mentioned in a recent podcast that their nail polish lines purposely filled the nail polish more than it was marketed since they were trying to be more safe than sorry, and the bottle turns out to have a bigger content when it was fully filled. also what you've mentioned about the where the supply chain and taxes also hugely impacts the cost.
I love holo taco no matter what I don’t care I’ve been watching her for so long
Fun laquer is terrible. Their formula isn’t great, and their pics are so badly photoshopped.
Thanks for making this video! As much as I love Cristine, her brand is essentially remaking her favorite products from other indie brands like UNT, FUN lacquer, SuperChic lacquer etc. I noticed she stopped promoting other indie brands a long time ago. Idk it just feel conflicted.
thanks for watching :)
Of course every nailpolish brand remakes what others do... She just wants to do the same stuff with more quality
She always mentions other companies when they send her PR, I see it often on her Instagram stories.
She did say that she stopped accepting affiliate codes and/or promotions the moment she decided she wanted to launch her own nail polish line.
Obviously she didn’t invent holo lol especially when it’s about the basics I think it’s really hard not to copy others 😅 a base coat is a base coat. We’ll see if she will be able to come up with unique special effects later once she’s done putting out the basics.
The way I see it is this: she liked the Fun Lacquers and thought, "well, this is nice but I would prefer the holo to be a little less packed so the underlying coat comes out better and I would like it to be more glossy and also thinner". So she went ahead and made it better in accordance with her personal preferences. What exactly about this is copying? 😞
Blink twice if your in trouble
Royal tea blue is a different formula, it's not supposed to be one coat.
I apologize for my mistake, but even with two coats, it is still streaky and not the easiest to apply. I've seen mixed reviews for Royal Tea Blue, and perhaps I got a bad one. I ordered a new one during the Black Friday sale to see if that one is better :)
@@salty_shelley I got mine from the black Friday and it was great at first but it is hard to use on long nails in general which is what I have. You have to be super quick with it because it dries so fast. I put a thin coat on at first and then put a final coat over it.
Holo taco is d best
You're reading this on your mind😵
I spent 72.00 on five of her polishes and they aren’t all that great. ILNP is so much better. More holo and a better formula in my opinion. I’m very disappointed.
ILNP polishes are amazing. I'm a big fan of ILNP multichromes.
no holo taco is better
@@umameenakshi3737 just because cristine has her own nail polishes, doesn’t mean they’re better than other brands lol stop being so biased and have an open mind about other brands
@@seulpai hello i have used both the brands and holo taco is way better if you ILNP as a top coat you can barely see the nail polish under it and i never told that holo taco is better cause it is cristine 's brand
why would you say so?
THERE IS NO DUPES! sorry if I was aggressive
well I agree in a sense that I like Holo Taco the most, but there are similar Holo topcoats on the market, especially for those who live in countries that Holo Taco cannot ship to :)
That Holo background hurts my eyes 🙈
Sorry, I will film with a different background next time!! 😔
@@salty_shelley
I hope it's not only my opinion heh 🙈 I think that would make a nice difference, thank you!
