    Hiya :)
    Today I made white bannocks…or soda scones! Traditionally these are split through the middle and fried (of course! :) as a breakfast treat. But I prefer to split them through the middle and spread some good quality butter and jam on them! Lovely with a cup of tea. Everything I used will be listed below.
    -Cheryl x

    What did I use?
    A 8cm frying pan - or skillet

    6-10 minutes cooking on each side and about 10 minutes to make
    Ingredients used -
    250g (8.8oz) Plain or all purpose flour

    Hello, from Northern Ireland! Good old soda farls....Just as a by-the-by, the 'round' of dough before cutting in four is called a 'cake', then each quarter being called a 'farl'.... On this side of the Irish Sea, each farl is pricked with the point of a knife to release the fairies, who can stop the bread from rising! Mind blowing, huh?! 🤔🤯🤣🤣🤣👍👍👍

    A delicious variation is the addition of 2-3 tablespoons of black treacle to the mix with the buttermilk. These treacle farls are best served straight from the pan with lots of salted butter. Had never heard of this treat before coming to live in Northern Ireland. 😋

    Farls are still massively popular in Northern Ireland 😍😛. I remember watching my gran making these on the griddle in Galloway about 40 years ago. She’d wrap them in a tea towel when they’d cooled to keep them fresh in the pantry. I’ll definitely be giving these a go….maybe on a campfire🤔😊👏👏👏.

    Hi Cheryl, we’ve just thoroughly enjoyed a soda scone with cheese alongside some homemade tomato and red pepper soup - absolutely delicious😊 I’d forgotten how good they are. My Dad used to make them, as did his Mother before him. I made the syrup steam pudding last night and it was excellent too! The old recipes are definitely the best and my family isn’t at all happy if a Clootie Dumpling isn’t produced for a birthday or Christmas meal. My other Gran, who had 10 children, passed that recipe down to me (I think I’m the only one in our huge family to continue to make it) and my daughter is now making it for her boys👏👏 Thinking I’ll try the sticky toffee pudding and sauce next but we’ll have to up the daily exercise considerably if I keep watching your fantastic videos and subsequently making all these delicious goodies 😂🤣. Happy New Year to you and your family and many thanks for all your effort and sharing - it’s appreciated! 🥰

    Thanks, Cheryl. It's such a simple recipe, I'd forgotten. Funnily enough, for some reason and I don't know why, I've always seen them and treated them as savoury serving them always toasted [I find them too doughy and stodgy for my stomach otherwise] with a fried egg on the top, or a cheese slice, or cream cheese and avocado; but I've never had them with jam or honey! I also make batches with a couple of tablespoons of grated parmesan cheese added to the mixture, then you get a really tasty savoury cheese scone.

    The soda farl is an essential part of the Ulster fry, it's also good split in two and heated for a couple of minutes on the pan then make a sandwich with rasher, sausage, black pudding and a fried egg....yum.
    While I was typing this Mrs Westcoast was telling Me that when She was young Her Mother used to cook this on a cast iron pan with rashers on the bottom of the pan before putting in the soda scone.

    • @billyaitken7461
      @billyaitken7461 2 роки тому +4

      For sure, an integral part of the classic Ulster Fry is to split your farl and then place it, split-side down in the pan for a bit so that they crisp up a bit & soak up all the run-off from the bacon 😍😛😋👍

    Wow! They're so easy to make! It hard to find buttermilk here as well. I only know of 2 stores that carry it. One is a very local grocery chain and the other a sort of organic, health food shop. I cheat and mix a lump of sour cream with whole milk, let it sit an hour then use it. Not quite the same but it works.

    Don’t you hate comments that start out, “I followed the recipe exactly…” and then proceed to list all of the changes made, and complain that it didn’t turn out? I tried as hard as I could to mess this up. I didn’t have buttermilk so I used half milk, half Greek yogurt, I added dried cherries, a bit of sugar, and cut them into 8ths instead of quarters. I put too much flour in the pan so they didn’t brown as nice as yours. But they were fine, just fine. Thanks for the technique, Cheryl!
