Hiya :)
Today I made white bannocks…or soda scones! Traditionally these are split through the middle and fried (of course! :) as a breakfast treat. But I prefer to split them through the middle and spread some good quality butter and jam on them! Lovely with a cup of tea. Everything I used will be listed below.

Hello, from Northern Ireland! Good old soda farls....Just as a by-the-by, the 'round' of dough before cutting in four is called a 'cake', then each quarter being called a 'farl'.... On this side of the Irish Sea, each farl is pricked with the point of a knife to release the fairies, who can stop the bread from rising! Mind blowing, huh?! 🤔🤯🤣🤣🤣👍👍👍
Well, it's important to release the fairies!
@@jonap5740 👍🏼😂😂
Actually I am partial to a fairy time to time
Hi Cheryl.. great recipe..I use curdled milk instead of buttermilk..I add a tablespoon of vinegar to fresh milk if I haven't got curdled milk .it makes for a very light mixture..😋👍
My father was Scottish, I greq up watching these made by the dozen.
My Son also watched my father make them, I made some today and ny Son now 30 is making them, many memories came back making them , Thankyou x
These were the scones my grandmother always made. Still a family favorite!
OMG! This is the simplest scone recipe that I have come across!
My girlfriend sometimes would add raisins or cranberries also!
This can be made everyday it is easy and so enjoyable!
Thank you for this!
A delicious variation is the addition of 2-3 tablespoons of black treacle to the mix with the buttermilk. These treacle farls are best served straight from the pan with lots of salted butter. Had never heard of this treat before coming to live in Northern Ireland. 😋
Farls are still massively popular in Northern Ireland 😍😛. I remember watching my gran making these on the griddle in Galloway about 40 years ago. She’d wrap them in a tea towel when they’d cooled to keep them fresh in the pantry. I’ll definitely be giving these a go….maybe on a campfire🤔😊👏👏👏.
I love them sliced in half and fried on the inside as part of a Sunday breakfast. Thanks for sharing xx
Delicious 👌🏻 Greetings from Scotland 😊 Have a great day everyone 🌻 Well done. Wish you all the best 🌻
Hello Bonnie Scotland always in my heart..Born and bred in Dundee
One of my late dad's fav things about when he went to port rush in Ireland
Oh fantastic Cheryl I love these toasted with butter and I never knew they were so easy to make. I know what im making at the weekend 😋👏
The fact that they're made on the stove top, not baked, is so intriguing!
That’s why I’m Scotland they are called Girdle Scones. They are made on the Girdle 🥰
@@lainepeterI've got an old cook book from around 1904 which calls them Girdle Cakes, but there's a slightly different recipe for Soda Scones and they are cooked in the oven.
Yes! My Ma used to make these when we were kids! ( She came from Enniskillen) She'd spread meat paste on them (from a jar) and it was a massive treat! Aww thanks for the memory Cheryl ♥️
I'm making these for sure and I don't have to turn the oven on. Thanks for sharing your recipe Cheryl. 🙂❤️
That is Definitely a BONUS!
No oven!, so summer is no excuse!!
I'm so happy to see this post. I have a recipe for farls but without a photo. I'd imagined a thinner cake. This is so helpful, thank you for sharing it.
Hi Cheryl, we’ve just thoroughly enjoyed a soda scone with cheese alongside some homemade tomato and red pepper soup - absolutely delicious😊 I’d forgotten how good they are. My Dad used to make them, as did his Mother before him. I made the syrup steam pudding last night and it was excellent too! The old recipes are definitely the best and my family isn’t at all happy if a Clootie Dumpling isn’t produced for a birthday or Christmas meal. My other Gran, who had 10 children, passed that recipe down to me (I think I’m the only one in our huge family to continue to make it) and my daughter is now making it for her boys👏👏 Thinking I’ll try the sticky toffee pudding and sauce next but we’ll have to up the daily exercise considerably if I keep watching your fantastic videos and subsequently making all these delicious goodies 😂🤣. Happy New Year to you and your family and many thanks for all your effort and sharing - it’s appreciated! 🥰
These look great Cheryl. No had soda scones since I left Auchinleck. I’ll definitely be giving these a wee go xx
Great recipe, didnt realize that they were that simple to make, as for the buttermilk you should give it a try making your own, its very easy to do, never tried myself.
Thanks Cheryl, these scones look delicious.
Yum, delicious memories from the old days when I was a bairn. 👍😊
They look absolutely delicious Cheryl.🤤👍
I will definitely be giving these a try they look delicious 😋

Looks sooo easy 👌 my dad loves these. Will need to try them out. Thanks for sharing xx
My friend through in Lanark makes amazing soda scones , half white, half brown flour. I love to split in half, grill some cheese, so delicious 😊

Im loving the accent. My daughter is leaving home soon to live in Scotland to study software engineering. if only she could make these amazing wee scones. Now that would be a skill worth going to Scotland for.

Hi great recipe will use this if we can get butter milk ,same problem here in the isle of skye probably get it in a order from Tesco delivery 👍
A easy recipe,,,I need too try them,,hot with butter and a big cup of tea.
Going to try it now!
I love soda scones with a Scottish breakfast, Cheryl can you not do a what's for tea chopping board in your merc, I would love one ❤️👍
That's a great idea!
Look great , we’ve been eating them this week.
Loves these Cheryl ♥️
Look delicious x
Thanks, Cheryl. It's such a simple recipe, I'd forgotten. Funnily enough, for some reason and I don't know why, I've always seen them and treated them as savoury serving them always toasted [I find them too doughy and stodgy for my stomach otherwise] with a fried egg on the top, or a cheese slice, or cream cheese and avocado; but I've never had them with jam or honey! I also make batches with a couple of tablespoons of grated parmesan cheese added to the mixture, then you get a really tasty savoury cheese scone.
Very nice and delicious recipe😋😋🥰🥰👍👍👍thanks ❤
The soda farl is an essential part of the Ulster fry, it's also good split in two and heated for a couple of minutes on the pan then make a sandwich with rasher, sausage, black pudding and a fried egg....yum.
While I was typing this Mrs Westcoast was telling Me that when She was young Her Mother used to cook this on a cast iron pan with rashers on the bottom of the pan before putting in the soda scone.
For sure, an integral part of the classic Ulster Fry is to split your farl and then place it, split-side down in the pan for a bit so that they crisp up a bit & soak up all the run-off from the bacon 😍😛😋👍
Wow! They're so easy to make! It hard to find buttermilk here as well. I only know of 2 stores that carry it. One is a very local grocery chain and the other a sort of organic, health food shop. I cheat and mix a lump of sour cream with whole milk, let it sit an hour then use it. Not quite the same but it works.
Look delicious
Must try thankyou
Lovely
I love your video!! Thank you again for sharing :) will try it soon… subscribed to your channel ❤️
Very similar to Australian Damper , yummy 😊🐨
Hello! I'm from Ohio USA. You sound just like my Uncail Sandy! These look like what my Mother used to make...
I call them farls as well and I'm from Dundee xx ps they look great !
I couldn't find a link for your merch? I just wanted to check it out.
These were very well received, when I made them.
Bannocks in Shetland. The temperature for the pan is when the flour just starts to brown.
These look fantastic Cheryl! If I want to make them with wholewheat flour would the flour measurement be the same?
Thank you very much, my oven is not working and i was looking for stove top recipe and yours is the best ,,, could i switch out to make cheese savoury instead as my son doesn't like sweet thank you for tutorial i have now subscribed 🌹🕊️🌹
Perfect
Mi farai ingrassare 😁 cucini tutte ricette favolose che.mi fanno ricordare e sentirne la mancanza..della Scozia
Is that a Jasper mug I see? I love that idea!
Don’t you hate comments that start out, “I followed the recipe exactly…” and then proceed to list all of the changes made, and complain that it didn’t turn out? I tried as hard as I could to mess this up. I didn’t have buttermilk so I used half milk, half Greek yogurt, I added dried cherries, a bit of sugar, and cut them into 8ths instead of quarters. I put too much flour in the pan so they didn’t brown as nice as yours. But they were fine, just fine. Thanks for the technique, Cheryl!
great video as usual..... do you ever use an air fryer.....
Hi Cheryl can you put fruits in the batter to bake them. I
Try a Polish grocer for buttermilk look for 'Maslanka', 'Kefir' might work for a vegetarian option too. They still have the old ways which we have thrown out with the baby
Ooo! When you tapped it with your fingernail! ☺️ 👂
You can make your own buttermilk with a cup of whole milk to which you add a good splash of lemon juice or vinegar. Let it sit a minute and it turns into buttermilk.
buttermilk: you can just take 8 oz of regular milk and add an acid like lemon or vinegar in I think 1/2 to 1 teaspoon? I have a glass in the fridge so I can try these beauties out? I don't like buttermilk either, except here. Our Mom Ann MacIver made these for us kids, so I'd better double the recipe? Thanks Miss Cheryl for a happy childhood memory.
Looks delicious. Thanks. A local bakery made potato scones, which are delicious with bacon. Do you have a recipe?
Rather like the American "biscuit" - something England doesn't have an equivalent for! [ But we have Pastry🤪 which makes up for it!]
U can make ur own buttermilk. Milk & lemon juice
Yummy yummy
In the Highlands they are bannocks
In the event you cannot get butter milk you can use sour cream, you can even use equal portion of milk that has had a teaspoon of vinegar added
Where do we find your merch? I don't see a link for it. :) 🥰 xxx
Are these something like the american 'Biscuit'? I have seen on other channels that adding lemon juice to whole milk has the effect of the 'buttermilk' cos like you they were not easy to find - when I looked - in Tesco.
I am glad I saw the texture of your B-Milk cos I would have thought it had 'gone off' if I had seen that out of the carton.
Lemon or vinegar will work
Hi can you add currants to make fruit soda scones with your recipe, I can’t get them in the shops anymore tia
Can they be maid in a stainless steel pan and does it need a wee coat of oil
I like mine with raisins. Can I add some raisins to this recipe?
Here West Virginia, that's a buttermilk biscuit. It's , in my family, split with gravy (sausage) poured over and eaten for breakfast.
I’m pregnant and your comment made me hungrier lol 🤣🤣🤣
Yes, at the beginning of the video I thought buttermilk biscuits. But we bake those in the oven. Cheryl makes them in a pan. Nice! 😋😋
When your oven is broken, the stovetop is all ya got. . .they are baked on the top and flipped.
Yuk
Change the baking soda to baking powder and you've got American southern biscuits :) Yummy either way ! tfs 🥰🧚♀💐🌷🌞🌛🏜🍃✝💗
Put shortening or butter in the batter then it will turn into a light and fluffy American biscuit. So good with chocolate gravy. My grandma used to make tomato gravy. I enjoy your videos!
It looks very good, but is there an other name for buttermilk?
I have a question. Baking Soda has salt in it already. Baking Powder does not. Which did you use?
Is baking soda the same as bicarbonate of soda not baking powder x
So you put them in a dry skillet, no oil. Low heat not covered. I'm seeing this video correctly? Please let me know.
I’m wondering the same
@@masuganut2082 I want to make some of these over the weekend.
@@tinahardman1525 same here. But I don’t want to mess them up.
You saw correctly. I make my potato scones exactly the same way.🏴🇺🇸
@@annegraham4307 thank you!!!
Big plate please x
🍝🥗🥣🍛There's tons of new ones...I've just found them! 😄👈
@@WhatsForTea looks like I'm sorted for breakfast dinner and tea and not have to do dishes till tomorrow. Yaas x
@@systemSkynet 😆👌
Can you use yogurt instead of the buttermilk please
Er.... You start by talking about baking soda then call it baking powder so I'm confused... Bicarb of soda or baking powder?
Bicarb of soda is correct
hi can u cook them in the oven?
I wouldn’t. They won’t be the same. Plus so much quicker in a pan or on a griddle.
HI Cheryl, I am struggling to get buttermilk so I followed your recipe using Greek yoghurt. Seems to have worked OK, but don't look anywhere near as good as yours.
I Don't See the Recipe ???
Hi the "more" word in the description below the video. It will drop down and show the recipe.
Your recipe indicates 250 ml buttermilk, it should read 125 ml.
