There is some kind of mystery in that woman. A hidden variable that transcends her voice and her appearance. I suppose that is why Concrete Blonde fans love her so.
At 3:36 when she climbs a complete octave higher on "Everybody knows. ." goosebumps never cease to appear on my arms. One of the greatest vocal riffs in rock music. Bar none. And one of the best female voices I've ever heard.
+Michael Wolf I agree, I've never understood why they didn't get bigger. I remember seeing them in the 80's and thinking, these guys are going to be huge, but it never happened. I wonder why?
+Richie Mann - Mostly because the follow-up to their breakout record Bloodletting (Mexican Moon) was a commercial flop, and they broke up for a few years thereafter.
+Richie Mann I thought they were going to be huge, too. In retrospect, I'm glad they weren't, though. And, I don't think the band has ever sought "fame" (in the Hollyweird sense, anyway). They continue to tour and are more badass than ever. Best of all, they still play in smaller clubs. Totally worth it if you ever get a chance to see them again. Just don't be the guy in the mosh pit who makes a big deal out if it smelling like pot. Johnette will call you out. LOL Anyway, Michael Wolf was spot on; one of the best female voices of all time, IMHO.
Thanks for posting this! My husband was listening to the Don Henley version and I about had a heart attack. I love Henley, but I said that sucks. I wanted to hear the "Pump Up the Volume" version and did an internet search to find out who sung it. Never imagined it was a beautiful woman! I love UA-cam (and miss the 80s) :(....
I know that Johnette's still around, but I really miss Concrete Blonde in a real and tangible way. There's just no rock band to compare to them at all today.
I'm an old guy and a Cohen fan and I'm listening to this version for the first time and I think its excellent! She gives the song a whole new interpretation, a darker undertone, but it works. ..."so many people you just had to meet without your clothes..." Only Leonard could write a line like that.
This song was on the soundtrack for "Pump Up the Volume". Many good songs on the movies soundtrack. Concrete Blonde is sadly missed by me during my college time in upstate NY in the early 90's. Great lyrics, performed oh so well.
Concrete Blonde deserved so much more respect and success than they ever got. loved them. One of the best female voices around if you ask me. I'll also get slammed for this, but... There is a 16 yr old girl on American Idol right now named Allison Iraheta who makes me think of Johnette a bit.
One of my favorite bands doing a cover of one of my favorite poets... simply beautiful. And she did an AWESOME job of it, but I'd expect nothing less from her and her vocal and musical talent.
Only learned later this was a Leonard Cohen song. Saw it on a TV in a hotel in Coronado, CA decades ago. Main reaction: Holy f'ing god Johnette Napolitano was hot with a volcanic voice. Bought the CD later. Have always loved Concrete Blonde. And Johnette is still, well, Johnette. And so many of us are thankful for that.
I love this band so much and every time I hear Johnette's voice I fall in love with her all over again. Beautiful, talented and rock's. Such a powerful voice haunting and touching. Thank you for touching my soul....
Just saw the Cohen show in Canada...at 70ish the man still weaves sensuality and melancholy into blissful music. Saw Concrete Blonde back in the 90s. Very talented, but Cohen stands the test of time. As Lou Reed said, "we are lucky to be living in the same time as Leonard Cohen". His music will stand the test of time!
ive heard of this band before but i never actually listened to them. i think they might be one of my favorite bands now. and the girl thats singing is beautiful, i love her voice
I so love this song... Cohen a lyrical genius... but her voice on this... I first heard it when I was 19.... gave me chills then, and now at 40, still does it!!! Amazing!
Agreed on the goose bumps.. that voice.. Johnette is one of the sexiest women ever in my book. I'll be enjoying Concrete Blonde for a long time to come.
I feel in love with this voice at 19 with this song. At 39 I saw her video "Take Me Home" and even more in love. This song is 20 yrs old and she has only gotten better with age.
All I know is I’ll never forget first hearing Joey, on the radio and sitting there with my mouth all slack jawed staring straight ahead. Then God is a bullet and not to forget Blood Letting. PURE GENIUS!!!!!!
I need this song right now, especially since the place I play at closed down yesterday. I loved seeing Concrete Blonde in Atlanta one New Years Eve. Theres nothing like them in the world.
did Leonard's song with so much power & wickedness that.... ~it's the best "Everybody Knows"~ i've ever heard--love to hear Johnette unleash the high notes towards the end; that's pure dopemine to the ears!
First heard this song during the credits of a tv show "The Great," immediately grabbed my attention as a well structured piece of music, this version is a haunting adaptation, great vocals and musicianship, love it.
allhailrussell Not by me. Was always one of my favorites. Especially at the time. This was before Nirvana, the world was still singing along to poison and motley crue. And she's my cherry pie. This was so much better.
Real Angel Johnette Napolitano --- the Best, Unique and Most Gifted Singer Ever. I love her! And she is soooo cute... her skin is sooo soft... I love her joy, her hair, her face. Her face changes always better. Chameleon. Angel. DELICIOUS! Johnette is a MIRACLE, pure magic! I never heard a song so soft, light, positive, as "paradise is home". That's heaven!
I LOVE Concrete Blonde, have been a huge fan since 1987 when I got the self-titled vinyl album free from a TV station. I'm a vovalist, and whenever I was asked my influences, the only one I would own up to is Johnette. BUT, my brother played this for me off of the Pump Up the Volume soundtrack (it had just come out) and asked me if I knew who it was singing. I didn't, and I likewise was embarassed. I don't care, love her, love the song.....
One of my all time favorite covers. I would lover to hear Amy Lee do this as well. Something about a female voice on this song really adds something to it.
my first dance at my wedding in 1992 was the The Blondes version of Little Wing. They are incredible, they are a time in my life held in perfect tempo and memory with each note.
John Siders turning 50 next month.. Went back and just watched PUTV... Remembering when I was 22... Those truly were better days.. God I always loved that movie... And loved being 22..😎 ✌
I was looking at the sky yesterday and thinking to myself imagine standing in Shanghai knowing it’s sinking, all those people smoke (1/3 of the population)… could you imagine how upset tobacco farmers and the atf would be, Joe was 35 years old, Joe also took a 225 mile journey hammering nails, and she has an incredible voice “your not going anywhere” you are always on my playlist, the hair style is quite fitting.
im 38 and ive been listening to them since i was a teenager and i totally agree. this band is/was (dont know if they're still together) amazing!!!! music is very personal and i've had had some very strong feelings over the years while listening to this. will always be part of my soul.
Johnnette Napolitano tours quite a bit. Concrete Blonde started with three members. Two of those members continue to get together (unless it's changed) once a week to play, and do what J~ and Jim do best. 2-3 years ago Ms. Napolitano toured as a solo act in Australia. 3 nights in 3 different venues. Each venue had 35,000 seats and all three nights every venue was sold out.Johnnette Napolitano performed brilliantly every time she stepped out on the stage (even though she had accidentally broken several bones in her hand and possibly a finger or two days before)! They may not call themselves Concrete Blonde, but Jim and Johnette are still great friends who happen to be able to continue to work together and, in my opinion are still Hugely successful and have yet to show any signs of slowing down after 30+ years. I may be a bit of a Fan of Johnette and Jim. Hell, I'm a HUGE FAN!

Excellent cover of a great song. Bette Midler is covering it now on her tour, right after some jokes on our obsession with social media, which fits the intro to this song...Everybody knows....
she was on LA ink and kat got a picture of her and her dog on her hip and since then i been more into CB more than ever now ( not coz of kat von D) coz i never relised she made a huge impact on her and me aswell so i got there album and just listen to it in my car on a midnight drive man it sends shivers down your spine
i have loved this song since the first time i heard it watching Pump Up The Volume. I saw Concrete Blond the first time in 1990. I don't remeber if they played this.
I'm absolutely certain that Leonard Cohen would give a thumbs up to this song. It's brilliant.

+Michael Wolf She just lets it RIP right there!
+Michael Wolf A musicians band ...
One of the best songs off one of the best soundtracks ever - Pump Up The Volume.
Everybody knows that Johnette rocks but let's give some love to James Mankey's great guitar playing. Really underrated.
tuz0wils0n James Rankey rules the emotive guitar realm
Where is he now?
So underrated
Little Wings was my ear opener.
And really amazing lyrics from Leonard Cohen.
Thanks for posting this! My husband was listening to the Don Henley version and I about had a heart attack. I love Henley, but I said that sucks. She does have an incredible voice and amazing range
Everybody knows that's how it goes.....that voice is unmistakable.....so is The Band Concrete Blonde.....
Não sei porque são tão esquecidos. Essa banda é fantástica!
I'm an old guy and a Cohen fan and I'm listening to this version for the first time and I think its excellent! She gives the song a whole new interpretation, a darker undertone, but it works. ..."so many people you just had to meet without your clothes..." Only Leonard could write a line like that.
This is one of the best songs of all times. Her voice is a serious instrument.
Jeri, that is the truth (full stop).
This song was on the soundtrack for "Pump Up the Volume". Many good songs on the movies soundtrack. Concrete Blonde is sadly missed by me during my college time in upstate NY in the early 90's. Great lyrics, performed oh so well.
The only group that could ever sound almost as good as the original.. Rest In Paradise, Mister Cohen. You'll definitely be missed
Concrete Blonde is never dated, Love them

"Everybody knows that the war is over,
Everybody knows that the good guys lost."
Great line.
Ms. Napolitano has a nice low register, so fitting for this song; saw it listed in "Rolling Stone's Top 10 Covers." Thanks for posting. RIP, Leonard.
Agreed on the goose bumps.. that voice.. Johnette is one of the sexiest women ever in my book. I'll be enjoying Concrete Blonde for a long time to come.
one of the more underrated songs in rock history.
RIP Leonard. Had this cover in my head last few days... don't blame you for peacing out.
sorry for your loss
I'm sure it didn't hurt too much
I still can't understand why the hell this band wasn't bigger than it was....Her voice is just magnificent and the music as well...Grrrrrr....
I feel in love with this voice at 19 with this song. At 39 I saw her video "Take Me Home" and even more in love. This song is 20 yrs old and she has only gotten better with age.
The man who wrote this song has died. R,I.P. Leonard Cohen
Saw them last night - amazing and better than anything being currently released. Everybody knows.
All I know is I’ll never forget first hearing Joey, on the radio and sitting there with my mouth all slack jawed staring straight ahead. Then God is a bullet and not to forget Blood Letting. PURE GENIUS!!!!!!
Everybody knows you are so discreet, so many people you had to meet, without your clothes! Leonard was a genius!
Takes me back to my high school dayzzz 😁. Class of 1992!! 😍
Pump Up the Volume ;) Christian Slater......
I need this song right now, especially since the place I play at closed down yesterday. I loved seeing Concrete Blonde in Atlanta one New Years Eve. Theres nothing like them in the world.
Goosebumps when I first heard this. I might add when I have listened to them since 1980-something. Great performers too. Johnette is incredible.
Oh yessir. I'm glad Johnette and James 'stayed the course' instead of selling out.
did Leonard's song with so much power & wickedness that....
~it's the best "Everybody Knows"~ i've ever heard--love to hear Johnette unleash
the high notes towards the end; that's pure dopemine to the ears!
Whoever chose the wardrobe for Johnette in this video did a hell of a job. I LOVE her clothes!
one of the most underrated bands ever.
I absolutely love Johnette. Such a talented artist
This lady is the best.

This woman is fantastic.
First heard this song during the credits of a tv show "The Great," immediately grabbed my attention as a well structured piece of music, this version is a haunting adaptation, great vocals and musicianship, love it.
one of the greatest songs ever penned by the right band for it...
Lenard approved
James Manky is so underrated
allhailrussell Not by me. Was always one of my favorites. Especially at the time. This was before Nirvana, the world was still singing along to poison and motley crue. And she's my cherry pie. This was so much better.
@@paulotonedef Agreed!
No one could rock Cohen like Concrete Blonde.
Blazing, painful truth.
Such an amazing talent, and SO BEAUTIFUL!
Real Angel Johnette Napolitano --- the Best, Unique and Most Gifted Singer Ever. I love her! And she is soooo cute... her skin is sooo soft... I love her joy, her hair, her face. The best cover of a Cohen's song. Even better than the Leonard's version! I love that band and it's chilling with this woman voice!
Leanord's version kinda sucks IMO.
your opinion.... but imo leohard cohen is the best.
Last year this might have been true, but the version is Justice League is pretty great
Jeff Buckley.
So now it's my turn to say: the Sigrid version sucks! And a lot! As the movie itself!
Written by the genius... Leonard Cohen. Add on top Jeanette brilliant voice and.. BANG we have an awesome song here
i still remember the first time when i heard this great song. thanks to Johnette.
One of my all time favorite covers.
I would lover to hear Amy Lee do this as well. Something about a female voice on this song really adds something to it.

She is one of the best vocals ever.
Luv Her writing going to see them this week in concert..can not wait......ROK!!!!!

Love her interpretation of this song. Johnette rocks!
Me too . She makes it real .

John Siders turning 50 next month.. Went back and just watched PUTV... Remembering when I was 22... Those truly were better days.. God I always loved that movie... And loved being 22..😎 ✌
John Siders omg, I had the meanest crush on Samantha Mathis in this movie. Seriously, Ms. Mathis was like Ms. Parker, she just don't know!
TALK HARD!
Everybody knows the ME nobody knows .

Concrete Blonde...My favorite band of all time.
Cohen is brilliant and this enhances it a little bit more. Great , Love it.
teacher...preacher...entertainer...no question...she is entertaining...
Grande chanson. Et grande chanteuse à la voix rock parfaite.

Every time I hear this song it's better then the last time. Awesome!
Damn! That's too much! Most underated and genius band in 80's.
Saw them 3 times 'back in the day'...Marry me, Johnette!!!
The vocals are inspiring!
She held a bass guitar and she was playing in a band now I am her biggest fan...RIP Pat DeNunzio...blood and roses
I love this song. I hear it on the movie Pump up the Volume. and fall for it. have the cd for years.
The voice is so beautiful!!
This song still makes all the hair on my arms stand!!
Pump up the volume, perfect movie, and perfect repris rfom Leonard Cohen.
The BEST Leonard Cohen cover ever.
