I feel like the refs were favoring Baylor the entire time. They kept calling holding on us and never on them. So I will take a last call in our favor even if I think it wasn't PI. Other than that it was a good struggle of a game and I'm glad we pulled it off.

Kudos to Nate Johnson for finally pulling himself up at the end. He wasn’t great at all in the first 3 quarters and up until now has struggled with ball security.
Amazing though how we completely turn on Bryson Barnes when he has a sub-par performance. We don’t EVER do that when Cam Rising has a bad game. (Ie: Oregon last year ((worst QB performance in a long time)).
Maybe Nate is finally figuring some things out BUT when he has a sub-par performance (which he will) are you gonna throw him out the window too?
Brysons weaknesses showed today: he tends to have tunnel vision at times. Sticks to one receiver and fails to see other possible open routes. To his credit, there were AT LEAST 3 broken routes where the receiver didn’t finish the route and Bryson was throwing to where they were supposed to be. (That needs to be addressed) Aside from the poor passing, he scrambled for extra yards, sacrificed his body quite a bit, took some hits and gave some hits, made a few pivotal throws BUT regardless of any positives, it’ll all be overshadowed by the fact he generally struggled to hit his man today.
Putting Nate in solely earlier may not have worked either. When he went in, it was the right time and he made the most of it and found his groove finally.
    Congrats Utes!

How could you say that Nate struggled? The coaches in the first 3 quarters did nothing but read options with him, so it’s obvious to the defense what would happen. Once they finally allowed him to pass, it opened up the passing game and kept the defense more on their feet. Nate’s speed is that much of an X factor.

@@neverbackdown1918 I agree the calls he was given weren’t working. They definitely had his number. He showed up when given the opportunity and that was good. But like all QB’s, he’s bound to have off days/games. Will we abandoned him too?

@k6drj I don’t want to just turn on Barnes. It was just a really bad game for him and I think Nate should have gotten the snaps earlier than the 4th Q.
I will say on the broken routes, it looked like it was the WR that were frustrated and Barnes looked apologetic. At least two with vele that I saw.
I hope Barnes shakes this off and does better and sees some more playing time. But really I just want Cam back.
And I do think Nate has a higher ceiling. I think Barnes has hit his ceiling.
In fall camp when Coach Whit said Brandon rose has the number 2 spot because he has a better grasp of the offense than Nate or Barnes!
Brandon rose is a freshman only there since spring. Barnes has been there going on three years! So to say someone who has only been there for spring and part of fall camp knows the offense better than a 2 going on 3 year guy! I think Barnes hit his ceiling.

Really dude? Wow you really don't recognize talent when you see it. I was at the Oregon game last year, that was Cam's absolute worst game he has played at Utah. I would take Cam's performance in that game over Bryson Barnes in just about any game I've watched him play.
Bryson has grit, determination and heart. He plays with his heart on his sleeves and will absolutely sacrifice his body for the team. But he has so many limitations! He put himself in a position higher than his talent level with his hardwork and absolute dawg he has in him that Coach Whitt loves so much. He's absolutely a leader and deserves the scholarship that he earned. But you have to see the lack of talent. He reminds me of all the mediocre QBs the Utes have had between BJ and Tyler Huntley.
Cam Rising is a special talent. He's absolutely the best QB at Utah since Alex Smith, talent wise. Just from the eye test, the SDSU game that Rising came in was all I needed to see to determine that fact. Cam is a top 3 QB in program history and has a great argument to being the number 1 QB in program history.
So Utah fans did not "turn on" Bryson Barnes, most Utah fans recognize what he brings to the table and expects more from Utah QBs now that the Utes have had so much success. It's clear to see that Bryson didn't have it together on Saturday and the coaching staff put it on him to try and put together at least some what of a decent game. He was absolutely the reason the Utes were in a hole, at least on the field. Did you notice in that Oregon game that they kept putting the ball into Cam's hands to go and win the game? The Baylor game I actually think the coaching staff tried that with Bryson, that's why he was in there until they had absolutely no other choice but to pull him. The coaching staff gave him too much opportunity in my opinion. I'm curious how much football you have actually watched in your life, and if it's a lot I question your eyes. Bryson Barnes is great, but he doesn't have the talent to be on a DIV 1 football team. He has the will and leadership to be on one, which is why he is at Utah. I have a lot of respect for Bryson, I just recognize the lack of talent.
Also Nate Johnson just needs some freaking confidence man! After watching the Florida game and the postgame press conference, it was clear to see that he lacked confidence. I think he thought he was gonna get the chance to actually play in the Florida game, not just be a glorified RB. I think once the coaching staff turned to Nate and said "You're the guy" it flipped a switch. I saw confidence in Nate Johnson for the first time on the long TD drive. I would put him at QB2 and give him as much playing time as I possibly can this season. He is the future at QB for Utah. I get we hear all these good things about Brandon Rose, but he has no experience in games. It's definitely a QB competition going into 2024, but with Nate Johnson getting the majority of the 1st team reps.

@@K6DRJ the problem with Barnes is that he has the same floor as Nate but with no upside. Nate has way more innate talent and athleticism, and that automatically makes his ceiling much higher. There is no point in playing Barnes over Nate. Nate might make more mistakes, but he also has much more potential to make big plays and keep drives alive. Barnes is a 3 and out machine.

The only negative I can say about the Ute defense is they need to work on screen-pass 'D', Florida burned them and Baylor were getting huge chunks of yards. Front-7 needs to pull back and not over pursue to give the corners and safeties time to get to the RB.
What a comeback by Nate Johnson.

Could hear that stick by Barton that caused what looked like a fumble from the opposite side of the field and up in the stands. People want to talk about the “interference” play at the end where it looked like they were both trying to make a play on the ball, but there are other calls you could call into question- like the fumble that Barton caused, the lousy holding call when JJ took one home etc. it wasn’t a one play game…

The coaching staff needs to know they are in the big time now, not the mountain west. You have to play your big recruits you have brought in to play. Let Nate Johnson play and do what he does. We have to stop being so conservative on play calling. Nate will make more plays than messing up.

Vele and Pittman are solid 4th option guys. Jackson finally showed what he can do when healthy. In the post game interview Nate said he wasn’t told to pass the ball until Cam and Ludwig said you are getting all the snaps for the rest of the game.
And the media asked are you happy to be able to show you can throw because it seems like everyone just talks about your speed on the ground.
And Nate said absolutely “I knew I could throw the ball and I am blessed that I was given the opportunity to do that and was able to execute” so Nate has wanted to throw but whatever coaches saw in practice made them nervous to let him throw. So I don’t think he was being selfish I think he was doing what was asked of him.
