    King Kenny was the most complete footballer I’ve ever seen in me life. He could do absolutely everything with ease. Scoring wonders with both feet, crisp passing, sublime first touch, vision, intelligence, headers. He was 5 moves ahead of everyone else. Greatest British footballer of all time.

      kenny's biggest asset was his brain, his ability to think 2 or 3 steps ahead of his opponents and know how to get himself into good positions and to find his teammates when needed.
      He wasn't physically the quickest or the biggest player ever, he wasn't even the most technically gifted player ever (He was technically great but there have been better in the history of the game) but his intelligence set him apart from the rest.

    I was a young 17 year old at the Spain game when Kenny curled home that magnificent goal that equaled Dennis Law's record of 30 goals for Scotland. The only time I saw him play live. He'll always be my footballing hero. Just a genius, who I don't think gets enough credit outside Scotland and Liverpool.

      I was watching highlights on STV and making chips in a shallow pan. Scotland won 2-0 I think and the highlights got extended. Waiting on Dalglish’s goal I hear a pop! Flames to the ceiling. Ended up in Monklands for two days after picking up the pan. Hand fine, goal is on UA-cam. That left foot curler was a Kenny speciality : )

    I was privileged to see Kenny Dalglish playing for Celtic week in , week out during the 70s . He was the King of the " Jungle " back then ; us Celtic fans adored him . We used to get frustrated for Kenny , as it was obvious he was at least three moves quicker ( in the head ) than those around him . Danny McGrain struck up a formidable partnership with Kenny , and to this day McGrain rates Kenny as the most talented Celtic player he played alongside .

    I remember Kenny talking way back in the 70s, about playing with his back to goal when receiving the ball. He said that wherever he was he imagined he was in the centre of a giant ‘X’ so that he automatically would know which of the four angles he could make the first touch towards. So when he made runs into space he would constantly have this X moving as he moved and it became instinctive to control the ball on the first touch into space to play the next touch. It took me over 10 years to fully understand that so that I could coach it. He was the King.

    In Glasgow when we were kids playing in the street and the park, we had to move the ball fast to stop from being battered, Kenny is talking about using everything at his disposal to make a fast decision. I learned to move my body one way and move another and avoided losing the ball. I never thought this as a skill but a basic element of playing football. I think this is why Scotland produced a lot of top players during that time. unfortunately today kids brains are computerised and they don't have the same opportunities to develop real Neurological decision making skills.

    When he gets into the 'talent' todo what Kenny was talking about, it sounds like he's talking about Spatial IQ. The greatest footballers, especially those who weren't world class athletes (ie their running, jumping and strength was good enough that they could have played just about any sport and even made it to a high amateur level in Athletics) would have Spatial IQ's in the 145+ range, probably more like 160.

  • @MarkHewitt
    @MarkHewitt 3 роки тому +5

    Question for a lot of Scottish fans - it was always said that Kenny never played his best for Scotland.
    The problem he had was that Scotland played Joe Jordan as his partner and Scotland would pump a long ball to the head of Jordan and Kenny would have to fight for the second ball. Kenny's speed was in his head, not his feet.
    Now I don't know if Scotland had a Ian Rush type striker during the 70s and 80s, but do you think that Scotland would have had more success if they had built the team around Dalglish more with a sharp striking partner?
    I also think Kenny would have been perfect for the Firmino role that Liverpool now deploy.

    • @jixuscrixus1967
      @jixuscrixus1967 3 роки тому +1

      That was a ‘rangers’ perspective, in the 60’s 70’s all Celtic players selected for the Scotland squad were regularly heckled from he rangers contingent in the crowd.
      The glasgow red top press pandered to their rangers fanbase and were always critical of Celtic players in the. Scotland squad.

      I agree with you. We always felt confident having Kenny but he seldom seemed to bring his Liverpool stuff. I reckon he was a bit isolated, holding it up for no one. He’d pass to someone running on to the ball or stationary,not, McDermott or Rush. Didn’t get to know John Wark a run timer. I like Firmino too. Liverpool must keep him even if there’s no Torres for him to supply. Scot!

    I think he meant _be aware of shadows around you before the ball is being sent to you._ Naturally, this can be extended to the logic that a good striker should try to lose his marker and find space and thus if you're surrounded by human shadows, you REALLY should not be calling for the ball.

  • @geoffnelson6756

      KD was the best player in the world for a couple of seasons, which is all anyone can hope to be. He was up against Cruyff, Platini, Muller, Beckenbauer, Keegan and so on. Dalglish elevated Scotland to another level. He was magnificent. He did for LFC what van Basten, Gullit, Baggio, Laudrup, etc did for future Euro champs. Kenny Dalglish was/is up there with the very best in world football of all time. He's Scotland's greatest ever player. And that's quite an achievement. Better than Law, Bremner, Souness, Morton, Johnstone... And better than England's finest, bar maybe Matthews or Charlton.
